on the shelves

The Club (gamestats) Third person shooter, adding elements of time trials and combos (the faster you kill people, and the bigger bunches you kill them in, the higher the score.) Single player is thin, unless you want to compete with yourself for high score. Multiplayer has a lot of options, but there are some complaints about the cap on participants (8), level size and weapon balance.

FIFA Street 3 (gamestats) Better than last year, but still not good. Gets old quick with the lack of variety in play. Looks good, but defense is much more luck than skill and playing creatively hurts your chances. Only 18 national teams are available, which seems absurd. You may get some value out of this if you’ve got a group to play against each other, but no career mode (and no create-a-player) means single player isn’t going to last you long. I’m disappointed.

Dynasty Warriors 6 (gamestats) The same game you might have played 5 times before. Not much new. Graphics do not look good, and slow down on the PS3 – IGN says multiplayer is nearly unplayable as a result. GameStats shows a wide gap between the press average score and the fan average score, which probably means people who are already way into this series are okay with it. Or it’s a sample size thing.

History Channel: The Battle for the Pacific (gamestats) Why? IGN’s the only I found who reviewed it, and notes there are many, many better First Person Shooters out there and this one brings nothing new to the table. There’s also all of 2 hours of game play. Avoid!

(the slowest preview in history)

on the shelves

* Devil May Cry 4 (gamestats.com) (and there’s a collectors version as well) – action slasher. Reviews say it’s a return to form of the original game (avoiding the problem of the two previous sequels.) It’s got the repetitive problems you’d expect from the fourth game in a series, but it still looks good (in some levels) and plays fun. The main character from the previous game is reduced to a cameo…until you beat the game and get the option to play thru it as him instead. PS3 requires a lengthy install before you get going, but then plays close to the XBOX360.

* Turok (gamestats.com) – dinosaur hunting with guns. There’s an unusual amount of variance in reviews. 1UP says the game seems unfinished (and the PS3 version more so, of course.) Play Magazine is joyous over the ability to shoot dinosaurs (and notes this is just a second tier FPS in the levels without them.) Maxim gives it a 2/5, but I’m not linking to Maxim.

If you buy either game from Circuit City, you get a $10 gift card.

Nothing. PS3Fanboy says Turok came out this week, but they’re wrong. Not that it matters.

NEWS: sounds like Sony’s discontinuing the 80GB soon, which would be the last one with backwards compability. And GTA IV is pushed to April due to PS3 issues.

on the shelves

01/22: Burnout Paradise (Stats): 9.0ish reviews everywhere. The big advancement is open-world layout; instead of going menu to menu to choose races, you drive to the intersections where they’re happening. 120 events are accessible from the world go. The races themselves don’t follow tracks or paths – you start in point A, the finish line is point B, and you zoom thru town anyway you want in between. Downside is you can’t immediately retry a race if you’ve failed (because you’ve got to drive back to the start and you’re at the finish), a map of the city only appears on the pause screen and it takes a little longer to get a race going when you have to drive around town to get to it. PS3 has slightly better visuals (!) though only X360 allows you to put your own songs in the game.

Downloadable Games

– PixelJunk Monsters {$8, for now} – Sony‘s got a gameplay preview, which still confuses me. I’m told it’s good, so don’t listen to me.

Add-ons

– Folklore Create-a-Creature Winner {FREE}

– Rock Band: Oasis singles {$2 each, $5.50 al}
* “Wonderwall”
* “Live Forever”
* “Don’t Look Back in Anger”

– Guitar Hero III “Classic Rock Track” {$6.25}
* “Peace of Mind” by Boston
* “Jukebox Hero” by Foreigner
* “Any Way You Want It” by Journey

(Winner: Rock Band)

– Stranglehold Map Pack {$15} – different versions for the Collector’s edition, even though the Map Packs look otherwise the same, that’s dumb. 10 maps and 21 players skins, so if you’re playing deathmatches with friends, make them chip in.

Demos
* Devil May Cry 4 {Demo}
* The Club {Demo}

PS1 Classic
* Jet Moto 2 {$6} – also out for the PC

Game Video
* Tony Hawk’s Proving Ground

on the shelves

nothing!

I did download the Super Stardust HD demo last week, but gave up on it after like five minutes. YAY content.

in the store

Downloadable Games

– Tori-Emaki {$2, requires PSEye} – this one’s for the birds
– Mesmerize {$2, requires PSEye} – like the previous game, this seems more like visual effects based on your movement (as picked up by the Eye) rather than a game. There’s free PS3 Themes for both games as well.
– Blast Factor Bundle ($13; includes Multiplayer Pack & Advanced Research Pack} – the game itself is from the early days of PS3, and the other two packs were expansions from last year. I think you’re saving $3 buying it together. The game itself is an arcade shooter that got middling reviews when it came out.

Add-ons

– MotroStorm Double Track Pack {$3} – “Eagle’s Nest” and “Diamondback Speedway”. Unlike the usual cards, this does not appear to be something you’d normally get in career mode.

– Rock Band singles {$2 each}
* “Last Train to Clarksville” by the Monkeys
* “All the Small Things” by Blink 182 – I can’t think this has aged well
* “Action” – Sweet

Demos
* Turok
* FIFA Street 3 – I downloaded this last night, and was happy to find no EA/PS3 problems, so far. But I haven’t really got the hang of it yet. It seems fun, but that’ll wear off if I keep getting killed 6-1.

Game Video (all trailers)
* PixelJink Monsters
* Borderlands
* Dynasty Warrior 6
* Brother In Arms Hell’s Highway
* Lost Planet
* Syphon Filter: Combat Ops

PS3 Theme
* PAIN: (Ice Tea, Ed T-Bone)
* Call of Duty 5: Modern Warfare
* and one each for those PSEye Games

* EA Amortizes The NFL Exclusive License Cost ’08 NFL Tour ’08 (The W at Amazon) stats The hype around the demo didn’t disappoint: this game sucks to an amazing degree. 1UP: “NFL Tour is shockingly inorganic, severely underdeveloped, and thoroughly limited.” Yours for only $40! I can’t believe they took out Gamebreakers – not just because it’s dumb, but because that check card commercial has me nostalgic for them. Do you think they were rushing the game to make Christmas, missed, and put out a rushed game anyway, or did they realize this was going to blow and saved it for this stretch of weeks where there were no alternatives?

in the store

Downloadble Game:
Super Stardust HD {$10} – an upgraded version of the previously released game. Nicely/wisely, those who bought the original version get patched up to the new version. There’s also a free demo, which I may get around to downloading and writing a book report for you next week.

Add On Contact:

– Folklore: 2 add on packs with 4 sidequests, 1 extra folk and 1 extra costume. They’re each $4, but why not buy both for $6?

– Rock Band: “Number of the Beast” by Iron Maiden, “Interstate Love Song” by Stone Temple Pilots, “Die, All Right!” by the Hives, each $2. No combo pack listed.

– Need For Speed: Unlock the McLaren F1 or NFS: Bugatti Veyron 16.4 without using career mode for $3 each.

Demo (besides the Startdust one)

– Kane & Lynch: Dead Men – “the highly controversial crime action game”, though not how they figured, I bet. What’s with putting out the demo a couple months after the game?

PS One Classics

– Crash Bandicoot 2 {$6} – also available on the PC store.

Game Videos

– Burnout Paradise – Guns N’ Roses trailer

Movie/Blue Ray Trailer

– Spiderwick Chronicles (Trailer #2)
– First Sunday (Trailer – possible the one they were teasing on NBC all night?)

* the Orange Box [stats] – for the unfamiliar, this is a comp of five games: Half Life 2 and both of it’s add on Episodes, as well as Team Fortress 2 and Portal. Portal, Team Fortress and Half Life 2: Episode 2 are exclusive to this comp. All are very good games on their own, so this is a good deal and highly rated. However, once again, frame rates are lower on PS3 than XBox 360 (and load times are longer.) You’ll note that this package was developed for the PS3 by EA (UK), which has consistently had this issue with PS3s.

* Unreal Tournament III [stats] – it’s very much a new version of the same game. If you like this series, you’ll continue to like it.

* NCAA March Madness ’08 [stats] – EA game where PS3 version is noticeably lesser than XBox360 version – CHECK. EA Sports game which is barely more than a roster update – CHECK. EA game not with online leagues that they magically can’t figure out for football – CHECK. Unless you need virtual Erin Andrews in your life, get the 2K college basketball game instead.

* Blacksite: Area 51 [stats] – why would you pick this week to release a mediocre first person shooter? You’re the third worst game in your genre this week alone, why not try get out first? This is a bad game on any week, a generic version in an overpopulated category. Maybe someone’s planning to use the tough week as a cover story, I don’t know. If you buy this game, you have too much money and/or waste lots of it. If you are a parent and buy this game for your children, you are a bad parent. (It’s not THAT bad, but you have much better options.)

* History Channel Battle for the Pacific – is pushed back to the last week of February. I guess if you’re missing Christmas, you might as well miss it by a lot.

* The Golden Compass (review) – a game based on a movie that cost a ton of money and will not be making most of it back. Maybe the book is good? The game itself is barely reviewed, but said to follow strongly along the movie plot. The one review I found said it’s been a game for kids who want to relive the movie, but older games will be less interested.

and that’s it.
