Grand Theft Auto IV (and special edition) – mentioning reviews of this seems besides the point. You’ve probably already decided at this point. (I’m passing for now.) FWIW, there are workarounds for the problems people have been having with glitches, but they really need to ship a proper fix ASAP.

Iron Man is actually out today, not Tuesday, probably due to the movie. That also means there’s no reviews for it yet. Maybe I’ll just run this item next week instead since there’s nothing new that week. Maybe I’ll forget. Maybe I should stop my PS3 from Folding all day, download the demo and figure out something for myself? May is the month for Maybes.

Downloadable Game

echochrome {$10} – this is said to be really good (and has been out elsewhere for quite some time), but I haven’t played the demo yet. It’s playable on the PSP as well, which is unusual for these non-classic downloadable games. It’s much more thinking and less system capabilities.

Gran Turismo 5 Prologue (downloadable and in stores) [gamestats] – it actually went live in the store a day or so early, but I still don’t understand why you wouldn’t buy the Blu Ray for the same price. Just to clearify, because I was confused for a quite while – this is a prequel for GT5, with the idea the actual GT5 will be out this time next year. You’re not getting the amount of cars (only 70) or tracks (only 10 unique) you’ll get in GT5, but you’re getting in a year sooner and probably for $20 cheaper.

Highlights are the near-photo realistic quality and up to 16 player online mode. It’s still a long grind to earn money and move up in cars. There’s no visible car damage – I think this is something the car companies have wanted to avoid – but they’re talking about adding it via patch later in the year. Perhaps they’ll work in more tracks and cars thru DLC?

It’s an unfinished game, but a highly rated one. If you enjoy prior GT games, you’ll enjoy this. If you’re on the fence, I’d say to pick up Burnout this year and wait till next to get GT5, but Prologue seems to be a good deal if you go that way.

in the store

Nothing.

Other News

– The next firmware update, 2.30, will go live on April 15th (Tuesday). The Blu Ray sound output will be improved to “DTS-HD Master Audio”, which I don’t know about and don’t really care about but is surely great.

The meat of the update is the revamped Playstion Network store. Sony put a video walk thru on their blog. It looks a lot better and quicker to navigate thru.

It looks like the store will update on Thursday, so you won’t be able to get GT Prolouge or the Warhawk expansion until later the week. I’d guess they want to allow everyone to upgrade ahead of time so the servers do not get killed with people trying to get everything at once.

Nothing! Unless you import the Nippon Professional Baseball game, which now that I’ve said that, I totally want. Actually, how hard would it be to add another league, FIFA style, to the current MLB games?

in the store

Nothing! They’re in a holding pattern for a couple weeks while they’re readying a new look to the store. The current version is HTML based, the new will be a faster software program, and hey posted new screens instead of the usual update list.

The store will be relaunched on 04/17, surely thru another version update. The idea clearly is to clean up things in preparation for Gran Turismo 5 Prologue’s launch on that day, which will be available in the store. Same price as the physical disc, less video content, but you don’t have to leave your house to get it.

Other News which I care about

– Sony’s dropping the Six Axis controller sometime this summer (as soon as they run out.) This is the standard version of the controller packaged with the system.

A DualShock version (read: “rumble pack”) of the controller went on sale this week ($55 , way too much for a controller.) They haven’t officially announced it’s replacing the old controller but since it does everything the old one does, that seems pretty likely. IIRC, the DualShock wasn’t used due to an dispute about licensing costs, but they’ve put the capability for it in PS3 games for the last year. Some games require a patch to get the rumble working and all new games will have a DualShock3 compatible icon on the box.

– The MTV Multiplayer blog also has an interesting explanation of why some PS3 games require long/big installs: the disc have so much space, the Blue Ray was wasting too much time seeking thru empty areas. Some developers have figured out how to deal with this, some have just installed critical info on the hard drive to get quicker access, and some have just put multiple copies of the same game on the disc just to fill it up.

I’ve got a friend who may end up getting a PS3 this summer and hates the rumble pack, so I’m already trying to figure out a trade.

– Wyclef Jean’s song “Fast Car” and music video “Fast Car” (Wyclef Jean playing Burnout while inside of Burnout) so completely do not work together.

This is all a good idea, but what exactly am I going to be writing about on the next two Friday? There’s nothing coming out at all, all I can do is update the release dates. Hmmm.

At least when things get rolling again, there’ll be a lot of stuff. GT4 Prologue and Song From Portal are due out for you, Burnout update is due for me.

Dark Sector (gamestats) Another slice/dice game. Everyone’s calling it a Gears of War clone but is impressed by the main characters Glaive weapon – a metallic 3 pronged boomerang variant used to solve puzzles when you’re not killing things. Multiplayer isn’t much and neither is the story, but it seems to be a slightly better game than…

Viking: Battle for Asgurd (gamestats) Really neat looking massive battle scenes – 1UP raves about the hundred of characters on screen at once in otherwise very down review – but they’re only a fragment of the game play and the rest isn’t at that level. The story is actively bad and the combat isn’t very deep. The gore is very detailed, if you’re looking for that.

PS3 Firmwire 2.20 should show up by the end of the month. It seems split between updating the Blue Ray ability (where you left on a disc is saved, so it’ll pick up there even if you watch something else in between) and music/photo cross platform integration (playlist sharing with PSP, save files to your hard drive from the internet browser.)

– Rock Band will be adding an in game store, rather than having quit the game and go to PS Network. This sounds/looks much better.

on the shelves

Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Vegas 2 (and limited edition) (The W at Amazon) (link is for the limited edition) [gamestats] – more than an upgrade from the last game, but not an entire new game. In is the ability to run, out is the four player co-op story (now down to two.) It’s very good, but it is recycled.

Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds [gamestats] – arcade golf, and somewhat limited with only six courses to choose from. It sounds like an easy to pick up fun game that takes advantage of next gen for an improved look, though possibly making it’s characters too cute. It’s an easily a step ahead off..

Sega Superstars Tennis [gamestats] – which is dragged down in the category of cute spots by lots of repetitive minis games and feels like a nostalgia purchase, relying on gamers to like the old Sega characters as much as they might for a similar Nintendo game. If you remember who people like Beat, Gum, Ulala and Alex Kidd are, maybe this game is for you.

Condemned 2: Bloodshot [gamestats] – first person horror shooter, very bloody and very violent. Doesn’t sound very long, and the multiplayer isn’t much, but it nails it’s theme pretty well.

Karaoke Revolution: American Idol Encore [gamestats] – pass.

IGN says Sony’s ’08 is an improvement, not just a patch + roster update. The AI fielding issues aren’t all gone, but they’re a lot better. Visuals have improved, and the Road to the Show career mode is highly recommended. Gametap goes crazy for the quantity and quality of animations.

2K has changed it’s pitching and hitting mechanics, making them too hard according to 1UP. 2K has lesser video on the PS3 version, again. Regardless of the platform, there’s lots of visual issues. The franchise mode is deeper here, including 90 minor league teams and 20 minor league stadiums, though IGN says it’s showing it’s age. The commentary is inferior to the other game.

Army of Two (gamestats) – a two person military shooter, which you probably could tell from the name. Pushed back from a Holiday release, this game has marked improvements from the what it was looking about then. The idea is supposed to be that you can play single player, and the AI playing the other guy will react just like a real person reacting off of you, but the game still doesn’t quite reach that level and you’re mostly directing them around. It sounds pretty fun when you’ve got two actual live bodies.

Lost Planet: Extreme Condition (The W at Amazon) gamestats (gamestats.com) – came out January 2007 for XBOX360 and last June for PC, and yet there’s still graphics problems with the PS3 version. The reviews vary a bit on this game, seemingly dependent entirely on how much of those graphics problems the reviewer had. IGN is particularly tough on them, also noting problems from those two other platforms were not fixed at all here. It sounds like a interesting concept – an action game on a frozen planet, where your gun power and your ability to stay warm are shared (use all your energy in shooting and you’ll die of frostbite), but you’d better off getting this on another system if you have the choice.

Lost: Via Domus gamestats (gamestats.com) – in the quest to make everything at least conceivable part of continuity, including this very post, this video game takes you on the FRINGES of many major plot events, but don’t actually participate in them. Why? Instead of playing one of the major characters, you’re one of the crowd fillers, they weren’t around for the big scenes, and that’s the important thing here. (I presume they felt playing with the major characters would’ve had you acting on the show, line by line, and they felt that was worse.) To make up for it, you end solving lame/easy puzzles and finding out secrets of the island well before the normal cast did, just like Nikki and Paulo. This game is Nikki and Paulo.

There’s apparently some info about the Island in the last minute of the game (which should only take 4-6 hours to get to), but who knows if the TV show will count it.

Turning Point: Fall of Liberty gamestats (gamestats.com), though it’s really just IGN’s review. Shooter, asking the question “What if the Nazis had invaded the US?”, but not more deeply than “zeppelins over New York.” Very shallow and very linear, and the game play isn’t that great either.
