How quick can I do this?

Announcers noted Z only gave up 1 BB and credited his bad performance to strikes that were too much in the strike zone. I was fast forwarding a lot and somewhat distracted, but it seemed to me Z was a lot more wild than his walk total showed. He was getting around the bases on bales by throwing big fat pitches down the middle, which were occasionally hit very hard. Not the best of outings for him.

Fukudome would’ve held onto the ball if Soriano hadn’t touched him. Leave the Japanese man alone! There’s also a long “if they were okay playing Fukudome in CF and someone else in RF, why exactly is Matt Murton in Des Monies again?” question, but I don’t suspect to get a straight answer about that ever.

It is funny that, as soon as they put Fukudome in CF and bat him second, he makes a bad play and can’t get on base for the first time this season. If he had an average game of the last 9 and gets on base twice, he probably scores both times. As it was, the Cubs managed to hit 3 home runs and only score 3 times, which ain’t ever going to work.

Marshall and Wuertz were fine out of the pen, so at least they got that. Soto did gun down a base runner, which saved the Cubs from not having problem earlier, which is a nice enough change.

Hopefully Lilly or Marquis can turn it around, but I’m very worried about this series now.

And this is why you wait till the last moment to put Kerry Wood back on the roster. Can you imagine if they had to try and get him thru multiple innings? As it worked out, the situation with Cherry was perfect – he pitched good, and the Cubs used him in this game for as long as they could, knowing it wouldn’t matter if how long he was unavailable. I didn’t list Eyre up there, but he did a good job, as did Cherry and Wuertz. It wasn’t going to win this game, regardless of Ohman’s performance, because the offense just couldn’t get all the way back, but they greatly improved the chances of the Cubs winning Friday’s game – Dempster, Marmol and Howry should be fresh, and Wood will be available.

It was pretty incredible to think the Cubs might come back and win this game, given the early hole, but the Phillies bullpen wasn’t looking pretty worn out by the end of this series and that helped a lot. The Cubs were just lacking the one big hit from cracking everything open, but to be able to rationally believe they had a chance from where they were is pretty noteworthy in itself. This team seems to be getting on base a lot and giving itself chances.

The lack of power is still very worrisome:

Team SLG
April: 413
May: 434
June: 440
July: 374 (13 HR/last in the league)
All the doubles this month have them up to 486, but it’s 2 games.

It’s not a huge problem, because the Cubs did pretty fine for themselves for July, but it’s a place were they can improve and pick up ground.

2-2 thru one series. If they can win the next, they’re right at 4-3, and this homestand is a success.

The Cubs batters couldn’t figure out Hamels out all night, and their only real hope was getting him out of their and working over the bullpen. There was some hope of that in the 7th, but Murton, Pagan and Kendall could get nothing going, and Fontenot, Soriano, and Theriot didn’t even challenge Hamels in the 8th.

The worst sequence of the night, by far, was Ronny Cedeno’s pinch hit at bat. After Jason Kendall has just walked on five pitches, Cedeno showed the form that got him sent back to Iowa in the first place (and would get him sent right back down if they could) by swinging at the first pitch. It was a horrible impatient pop fly, and Ronny deserved to get booed. Soriano almost did the exact same thing a batter later, but Bourn tripping over the incline gave him another chance (not that he did much with it.) That was pretty much it, and I don’t think Cedeno gets another critical at bat for quite a while.

Tonight’s Marquis vs Adam Eaton. On the upside, Adam Eaton is bad. On the downside, Jason Marquis is bad. It’s 70s night at the ball park, and I’m just hoping Jason makes it to the 70s in pitch count without blowing up the game. The under/over is 9.5, and I’d take the over.
