Scorpio, Silver King, Nuevo Laredo

Scorpio (Senior), Rafael Nunez, passed away this morning. Scorpio was part of El Toreo in the 80s, one of many guys who could claim a win over Canek for the UWA Heavyweight Title (and lost it back to him two months later.) Scorpio was given the Feo gimmick that was passed down to his son, Scorpio Jr. In recent years, Scorpio was a Mexico City Box Y Lucha commissioner and was often seen during incidents at the CMLL Arena Mexico shows.

Silver King, can count to 6/Black Terry Jr.

IWRG (THU) 06/24 Arena Naucalpan [Black Terry Jr. (flickr), @thegladiatores]
1) Guerrero 2000 b Alan Extreme
2) Comando Negro, Eterno, Hijo del Signo b Dark Devil, Guerrero Nazi, Imposible
3) Avisman, El Hijo del Diablo, Gringo Loco b Brazo Metalico, Daga, Eragon
4) Black Terry, Cerebro Negro, Dr. Cerebro b Bombero Infernal, Maldito Jr., Samot [captains hair]
5) Silver King b Máscara Año 2000 Jr. [IWRG IC HEAVY]

Mascara Ano 2000 Jr. lost the title to Silver King. Way to let Arena Naucalpan down! If this whole story ends up with, say, Chico Che winning the heavyweight title to avenge IWRG, I’d vote it for feud of the year. If this whole story ends with Silver King walking off with the heavyweight title and never returning to defending it, in Negro Casas/Mistico style, it’d be great on a different level. Dos de Tres has promos with the new champion and the old champion.

Dr. Cerebro & Bombero Infernal were the captains, so Bombero Infernal lost his hair.

Guerrero Nazi is a tecnico! I was sure I’ve seen that name before, but I can’t find any previous matches. Dark Devil was hanging around Arena Neza when they were running the Colmillo Blanco/Ramstein shows there. I presume that’s a trio of Negro Navarro students.

CMLL Nuevo Laredo mega show (in need of a name) press conference notes: the Gladaitores, Cesar (who notes all of the undercard connections to Oriental), and SuperLuchas (who links back here – echo chamber complete!) Of the non-Oriental & Mistico teams, it sounds like Atlantis vs Olimpico was the only pushed slightly as a rivalry.

NJPW has an article hyping the Okumura, Liger, Yoshihashi vs Garza, Terrible, Niebla match just to get in on the hyping of things.  There’s an obvious relationship on the Japanese team between importance and casualness of clothes worn for a press conference.

If Garza is back with CMLL, does that mean someone else is coming in to lead the Independents? Did they forget about that?

Arena Mexico previews: SuperLuchas, and Ovaciones has one after it’s Nuevo Laredo preview. Today’s about as a lame duck a Friday show can get. There’s nothing going on heading into the show, CMLL spent yesterday hyped an entirely different show, and no one will be talking about this show tomorrow. There might be some good matches, but there might not be many people watching them. There surely will be a moment of applause for Scorpio.

Dragon Rojo says Poder Mexica was winning 80% of the title match, can’t understand how he lost again. Dragon Rojo’s family came to see him with the title, but instead he was hurt after Metro’s German suplex, so Metro is a new rival. Dragon Rojo might actually win that feud. Might.

AAA Notes: TripleMania Date, Location Announced, Cibernetico returning?

AAA posted a bunch of news last night.

– not only is Rey de Reyes confirmed to be March 15 in Plaza de Toros Nuevo Progreso in Guadalajara, TripleMania is announced to be June 13th in Palacio de los Deportes, Mexico City.

Seems very early to announce that, especially considering they don’t even list the TV taping dates for this month (02/07’s lineup just went up.) I don’t know what it means. Maybe nothing.

– Rey De Reyes will have a 16 wrestler field, as usual. Unlike last year, it doesn’t appear everyone will have to qualify to be in the match. A news update declares Silver King is the first entrant. Probably not going to win, though he looks better than a month ago.

– the latest WON says Cibernetico is talking to AAA about his eventual return. Working as an indy is not working out. He could be back as early as March (it’s not definite). Later there’s a oblique mention of the main event picture changing after Rey de Reyes, which would probably make sense for Cibernetico’s return and a change of ‘Konnan running AAA’ status quo.

– the WON also mentions AAA plans on taping for TV during it’s US tour, probably in Los Angeles (04/04) and Las Vegas (which they actually haven’ t announced as running?)

– AAA’s site is running a poll, asking people if they want to see Vampiro return to the ring. As if you thought he really might not.

Update: AAA just announced Charly Manson will return on 02/18 in Parque de Beisbol de Celaya, Guanajuato. (Which also says that taping is that day.) Match is Charly/Latin Lover/X-Pac vs Konnan/Zorro/Electroshock.

04/17: Puebla, magazines

triplea.com

AAA posted photos of their newest taping, as you can see.

CMLL (MON) 04/16 Arena Puebla [hugo999]
1) King Jaguar & Super Star b Ares & Murcielago
2) Espiritu Maligno, Karisma, Toro Bill Jr. b Centella de Oro, the Tiger, Zigma
3) Dr. X, Skandalo, Toro Bill Sr. b Furia Chicana, Leono, Stuka Jr.
4) Atlantis, Olimpico, Tarzan Boy b La Mascara, Maximo, Negro Casas
5) Alex Koslov, Hijo de Lizmark, Rey Bucanero b Damain 666, Halloween, Hector Garza

Guessing at the main event finish – hugo walked out before the end, but that usually means the tecnicos were going to win. Leono got hurt in his match, where Furia Chicana replaced Valiente (and I had Astro Boy in that spot.)

Magazines:

Box Y Luchas has the Mistico Double Belt picture I was hoping for, so I’m listening them first. That’s cover B for the week – cover A covers La Parka Jr.’s accident and wrecked vehicle. (Ovaciones has an update on this story which really doens’t update much – it sounds like the arm injuries might not be as bad as originally feared but no one’s even hinting at a return date.)

Super Luchas #208 has multi-champion Mistico, though no double belt picture on the cover. Of all the championships he current holds, I’m sure the Tapatia Wrestler Of The Year award means the most to him.

Luchas 2000 #364 talks about the Parka accident and Apache dropping (selling?) her title, but also promotes it’s upcoming show for next Saturday – which now has an updated poster. I’m still not exactly sure what the main event is, but I guess it’s a five way match: Villano III vs Silver King vs Blue Demon Jr. vs Hijo del Solitario vs Villano IV with hair, belts, and titles on the line – though, isn’t Silver King the only one with a belt? Who else would be betting their hair? I dunno. Looks like the Rey Misterios have dropped out of the show.

IWRG’s site is still done, but their lineups and a bunch of others are in Box Y Lucha’s usual weekly roundup, which I hope to get when I have more time.

03/22: Laguna, Monterrey

CMLL

Ovaciones has an article about fans trying to mob the WWE guys as they got into the airport. Also, Juvi’s heading to England and Italy for a bit.

indy (THU) 03/22 Arena Olimpico Laguna de Gomez Palacio [El Siglo de Torreon]
1) Diamante Negro Jr. & Mini Star vs Espacial & Pioloto Negro Jr.
2) Enrique Vera, Piloto Negro, Sexy Piscis vs Ben Hur, Espanto V, La Amenaza
3) Hijo de Anibal vs Blue Demon Jr. [DEMON CRUISER]

Demon’s some cruiserweight championship here. I don’t know the name, and figure it’s just his belt. The article says it’s a world title, says they’ll be extra sure to make it a clean fight tonight, and never says which promotion Demon’s representatives here.

WAGNER (SAT) 04/07 Auditorio Municipal Torreon [El Siglo de Torreon]
1) Dark Angel & Marcela vs Hiroka & Princesa Sujei
2) Silver King vs Hijo del Solitario, Angel Blanco Jr., Texano Jr. [UWA JLH]
3) Dr. Wagner Jr. & Mistico vs Averno & LA Park

This would seem to indicate that Silver King has won, or will win, the UWA Juinor Light Heavyweight Title – we have him last losing it to Diluvio Negro II.

indy (SUN) 03/25 Arena Coliseo Monterrey
1) Erick Snak & Jimmy Navarro vs Marrullero & Rey Aguila
2) Arcangel (Monterrey), Armagedon, Chuy Escobedo Jr. vs Angel Negro, Black Nazi, Zulu
3) Angel del Amor, Corazon Adictor, Sky vs Black Sabath, Ejecutor, Red Flamer
4) Golden Boy, Huracan Ramriez Jr., Ultraman Jr. vs Nygma, Picudo, Silver Cat
5) Konnan Big vs Pancho Tequila, Super Konnan, Konnan King [cage of death]

How many freaking Konnan’s can this promotion have?

AAA (SUN) 03/04 Auditorio Municipal Salvatierra [el Halcon]
1) Money Pack b Dance Boy
2) Crazy Latino & Dragon de Oriente II b Atomico & Toro
3) Alebrije & Cuije b Chucky & Monsther [AAA MASCOT TAG]
4) Brazo de Plata Jr. & El Elegido b Baby Hunter & Mr. Niebla [cage]

El Halcon 88 has interviews and features on Cibernetico, Virus, Black Shadow, Explosivo, and Arkangel. Virus says the Internet is the invention of the White Man (not the wrestler), and not being one, he hasn’t used it much. But he’d like to learn.

Dr. Wagner (Sr.) was inducted into the Zacatecas Hall of Fame. Perro Aguayo went in last year. (Sol de Zacatecas)

El Sol de Tampico says locals Sadico, Peligro, Iron Boy and King Boy have signed with IWRG. They were used as random early match guys early this month.

Hijo de Santo’s coast preservation story has gotten picked up in a number of Mexican papers. Nothing new. If you’re in Phoenix, Santo is wrestling on Friday. Looks like Santo/Super Parka vs Misterio/Psicosis or some similar combination.

A poster on Box Y Lucha talks about making a new mask for Angel Azteca, when he was returning to CMLL from AAA. There was an idea to freshen him up and give him a slightly different look, but they ended up sticking with the original. The mask ended up getting slightly modified, and used by someone else coming in from Promo Azteca who was getting a new gimmick – Ultimo Guerrero.

02/26: Coliseo, Solidaridad, VIP, Magazines

CMLL

CMLL (SUN) 02/25 Arena Coliseo [ovacopmes]
1) Polvora & Vaquero b Molotov & Sombra de Plata
2) Caligula, Hooligan, Messala b Danger, Starman, Stuka Jr.
3) Leono, Sagrado, Virus DQ Arkangel, Mogur, Nitro
4) Alex Koslov, Heavy Metal, Rey Bucanero b Damian 666, Halloween, Mr. Aguila
5) Black Warrior, Olimpico, Ultimo Guerrero b Dos Caras Jr., Dr. Wagner Jr., Lizmark Jr.

Leono faked a foul from Mogur to draw the DQ. Ultimo got Wagner clean in the main event.

indy (SUN) 02/25 Arena Solidaridad [lemejordelucha]
1) Aguila, Hunter Jr., Norteno Jr. b Mini Gato Volador, Mini Venum, Mni Hator
2) Dranzer, Eclipse (Monterrey), Escrabod b Black Soul, Coco Rayaho, Mitsunori
3) Diluvio Negro I, Eros 69, Monje Negro b Apolo Estrada, Diluvio Negro I, Estrella Dorada Jr.
4) Diluvio Negro II b Silver King [UWA JLH]
5) Gato Volador b Vaquero Romo [hair]
6) Atlantis, Blue Demon Jr., Marco Corleone b La Park, Negro Casas, Shocker

Cerebro Negro won the IWRG Welterweight Championship in the main event relevos incredible on Sunday, which is incredible because he wasn’t supposed to be in this match. So he won a hair and a title in a week.

Jesus Perez Rodriguez, a lucha and boxing promoter in Aguascalientes for the last 65 years, passed away on 02/23. He was 91. (El Sol Del Centro)

Mundo De Hoy articles about VIP:
mask match announcement, promoters explain they want to work with everyone and just happen to not have CMLL guys this time. They also explain how they’re much better wrestling than WWE.
Super Muneco vows to retire if he loses his mask. That ain’t happening. Super Muneco explains how the feud started in AAA – Coco Rojo won the first 175 matches, and then Super Muneco won one.
Coco Rojo does not make that same vow. He’s (saying he’s) 39 and figures he could wrestler to 45 or 50. Coco Rojo sets this up as a battle between the 90s (him) vs the 80s (Muneco), which I don’t know is a good thing for ’07.

Both the participants were asked about the WWE; there seems to be an idea that they’re in competition with those WWE shows despite being two weeks before them.

El Salvador.com has a story about the small lucha scene in San Salvador – basically, one arena with weekly shows. There’s another article briefly discussing the history of lucha libre in San Salvador, talking a lot about local wrestler Rayman – he’s either Max Linares or suspiciously claims the same background as the original Rayo de Jalisco.

Magazines
Luchas 2000 357 has Marco and Alex as smilin’ tecnicos
Super Luchas 201 teases Mistico/Perro
Box Y Lucha 2807 teases Mistico/Perro

Univision is settling a fine with FCC over not broadcasting the required amount of children’s programming for a stretch (they put kids in a telenovela instead). Taking care of this fine will allow the Univision sale to be completed, so it’s another domino falling.

11/27-12/03 lineups

Still working on the news.

Lineups are below. Highlights
– the Tuesday Coliseo main – Wagner/Shocker vs Atlantis/Ultimo – probably is the match I’m most interesting in seeing and of course will. Perro Aguayo is back on Friday, and they’ve dropped both Universo and Kenzo from the main event.
– AAA TV tapes on Thursday.
– Mistico is apparently the IWRG Super Welterweight Champion, because he’s defending it on Sunday versus Black Warrior. At least IWRG figured out they need to move progress the feud; perhaps someone could pass the message onto CMLL? Don’t forget that Mistico’s also winning Hijo del Diablo’s mask on Friday in Tijuana.
– The Hiroka defends/retains the CMLL Women’s title against Marcela in Neza on Thursday.
– A Mascarita Sagrada defends a Mini’s Title on Friday. Don’t ask me which.

Speaking of title belts, according to the report from Arena Solidradid over on lomejordeluchalibre, it’s the UWA Junior Light Heavyweight title Silver King is toting around. You know, if they ditched all titles with Super and Junior with them in Mexico, it’d be a good start.
