Popitekus, Mask Matches, Santo in Dallas (and not Chicago), sound ideas

News

Kurt Brown has a great remembrance of Popitekus. Segunda Caida reviews the Brazos/Popitekus match linked to the other day.

Dos de Tres posted a video of Chessman in a cast, which is the first time AAA’s acknowledged he’s hurt. Looks like he’s making spot shows still, or at least that one.

Ovaciones has a preview of today’s Arena Mexico show, which is good even besides the parts read from the luchawiki CMLL Tag Team Championship page. There’s also an article about the impending debut of Mercenario Jr. SuperLuchas is picking the champs in the title match.

Seuxis has a big plan to win her mask match on Sunday: she and Silueta have learned from the same trainers, so the ruda knows everything the tecnica knows, but Seuxis also knows ruda tricks to give her the edge. Makes sense to me.

In the other mask match, Dr. X says he’d like to stay to the end, just to get his hands on Fabian el Gitano and settle it one on one. That’s the psychological problem with lucha de apuesta en cage problems: if you hate this other person so much that you’re willing to put your entire identity, your life, on the line just to get a shot at theirs, why do you ever leave the cage and give up that opportunity? You’d have to be a liar or a coward to want to leave, and I guess rudos are closer to the former, and it’d only make sense to leave as a tecnico if you rival has already gone, but that’s not usually how it works.

The latest WON says Sexi Star contacted WWE about getting in. Meltzer says she doesn’t speak English, clearly exposing how little AAA TV he watches. (Okay, she doesn’t speak English well.) I can’t imagine it’s going to work out, but it says something about the promotion when the most important woman in AAA over the last year or so is looking for a place elsewhere. I wonder if she’s under contract.

Hereos del Ring says there will be a mystery legendary luchador to unlock in the game. Alliens?

Yesterday, AAA had an article about getting back on Gaora TV in Japan this year. Dorian tweeted a similar message earlier and Dos de Tres echoed on Facebook. Today, that article is mysteriously missing, so why don’t I just post it:

AAA also catches us up on the biggest issue in the promotion at the moment: Billy Boy’s thoughts on teaming with Tiger Cota & Decnnis vs the Air Force in Toluca. Spoiler: he thinks his teammates are good and his opponents are not.

For R de Rudo, Brazo de Plata introduces Brazo de Plata Jr., Brazo Metalico, and Goya Kong as his newest debuting sons and daughters.

Shocker, Angel de Oro, Angel de Plata and Camorra visited ill children in the hospital.

Local Articles

El Hijo del Santo is listed on a show in Dallas on Sunday. El Hijo del Santo is also listed on a show in Chicago on Sunday. That is a bit problematic! Santo says he’ll be in Dallas, which is all the excuse I need not to go to Congress Theater. This is actually a fine defense of Twitter.

El Pancracio has info on some of the guys on their Lucha Libre Expo show, and hypes up their main event.

In Guadalajara, local wrestler Leo says replacing Toscano in the semimain Sunday with the regular CMLL wrestlers was a dream come thru. He’s only been wrestling for three months, and sometimes it pays to be the replacement guy.

Dos de Tres teases a feature on behind the scenes of TripleMania. Surprised they’d show La Parka and LA Park within arms reach of each other, even in this context.

Hidalgo Sports interviews Fuerza Minera, who is apparently sponsored by the local mineworkers union.

Cronicas Y Leyendas write about San Luis Potosi legendary local wrestler Carnicero Grimaldo.

People are (predictably) complaining about the bad condition of the floor in Auditorio Municipal de Torreon after the return box and lucha events, including an AAA taping. This is what got those events kicked out of that building again.

In Oaxaca, the town council is reviewing local laws passed in 1986 which ban women’s wrestling and prohibit parents from bringing infants to the shows. That 1986 date means they put in the women’s wrestling ban just as Mexico City was lifting theirs, probably in response to other ruling.

There’s a restaurant in Tulsa, Oklahoma – Elote Cafe and Catering – with lucha libre wrestling every other Thursday. KTUL has a story about the luchadors, and I think have a new favorite gimmick: La Princesa De Cerveza. How did she come up with that identity?

La Princesa’s image was a simple matter of taste, “I love beer, absolutely love beer. So I figured why not be the princess of beer?”

Why not!

Lineups

CMLL (TUE) 07/20 Arena Mexico
1) Rayo Tapatío I & Rayo Tapatío II vs Artillero & Súper Comando
2) Pequeño Halcón, Pequeno Maximo, Último Dragoncito vs Cisne, Pequeño Nitro, Pequeño Violencia
3) Ángel Azteca Jr., Ángel de Plata, Fabián el Gitano vs Arkangel de la Muerte, Dr. X, Skándalo
4) Máximo, Rotoporky, Sagrado vs Charly Manson, El Alebrije, Olímpico
5) La Máscara, La Sombra, Máscara Dorada vs Héctor Garza, Terrible, Texano

Charly Manson (spelled “Charlie”, but that may just be CMLL.com’s random spelling generator) starts here as an Invader, though how long he lasts is anyone’s guess. This is his first match here, but maybe not his first appearance – he was one of the AAA guys who invading to set up the AAA vs CMLL show if I’m remembering right. Two more of the four minis introduced recently actually make their debut.

Beside the debuts, they’ve also got the current trios champs versus some possible contenders, plus the tercera has some Infierno en el Ring fall out. It’s the first appearance for an unmasked Fabian/Dr. X, or maybe those two both still have their masks but are setting up a one on one encounter soon. (And the opener is the quintessential opener.)

CMLL (TUE) 07/20 Arena Coliseo Guadalajara
1) Black Metal vs Titanio
2) Angelo & Javier Cruz Jr. vs Acertijo & León Blanco
3) Leo & Palacio Negro vs Ebola & Ráfaga
4) Fuego, Metal Blanco, Stuka Jr. vs Exterminador, Máscara Mágica, Pólvora
5) Blue Panther, Hijo del Fantasma, Metro vs Atlantis, Dragón Rojo Jr., Rey Bucanero

Less interesting. Mascara Magica just returned last week after being out of the ring for weeks, lined up against Metal Blanco then, and is lined up against Metal Blanco now. Take a guess where this one is going.

DTU (FRI) 07/23 Centro Banamex
1) Dement Xtreme vs Chica Tormenta
2) Tacubo vs Muerte Bucanera, Disturbio, Flamita, Ciclope, Hormiga, Skrash, ?
3) Tribal vs Black Fire
4) Trauma I & Trauma II vs Paranoiko & Psicosis III
5) Crazy Boy & Daga vs Drastik Boy & Iron Love and Eterno & Low Rider
6) Aeroboy vs Joe Lider, Kaientai, Violento Jack, Murder Angel [DTU]

Another updated card for LLExpo. Show name is “I [heart] DTU”, which I believe is a trick to force me to type those words. Devilish.

All the AAA-specific guys – Electroshock, Dark Family – are off this card, as is Negro Navarro and Skayde. The last two might be someone realizing no one was allowed to work doubleheaders last year and adjustments being made (which means the NWA card might lose the Traumas.)

The only AAA guys left are part of the usual pack of guys who were working these sorts of shows before they were in AAA. At the same time, MedioTiempo has an interview with Crazy Boy talking about this updated lineup. Crazy trips over himself talking about how much the fantastic relationship he has with AAA even though he hasn’t been on TV in quite a while. Crazy Boy says it’s Violento Jack and Aero Boy and Paranoico who take care of DTU when he’s on tour with AAA.

The Disturbio guy in the second can’t be the CMLL guy, or it won’t be the CMLL guy.

02/25 (notes): Nino de Acero out, Koslov to ROH, Box y Lucha

Nino de Acero will be out for nine months after fracturing his femur on Monday during a dive, which means he’s back in November if things go well. The surgery took six hours. Lucha Libre is brutal.

SuperLuchas says Alex Koslov is part of the Mexican contigent on the ROH Houston shows. That’ll be great and great for him. I hope he still does the stop sign. It also does open the door to mindblowing AAA/ROH crossovers, which we discussed a bunch on the last podcast.

Cavernario Galindo/Box Y Lucha #656
Cavernario Galindo/Box Y Lucha #656

Sexi Star is on the next AAA Circus Circus show, which would seem to preclude her from being Star Fire. Star Fire hasn’t really turned up much, so I guess it doesn’t really matter.

No Dark Angel or Cassandro on the last set of TNA tapings.

Ovaciones reports Blue Panther, Shocker, Hector Garza, and Black Warrior will receive Golden Microphone awards from the National Association of Broadcasters. They gave awards to Marco & Atlantis last year, so I think they just like giving awards.

The Gladatores also have interviews with Signo and Scorpio Jr. (as FCW Champion)

Box Y Lucha has articles with Perro Aguayo Jr. growning up as the son of Perro Aguayo, Super Crazy heading to Puerto Rico and Martha Villalobos angry at Mr. Mexico using ‘El Rey’ in Arena Queretaro and losing his mask, since she has a wrestler using the same name (if only there was some sort of government sponsored official group in charge of this sort of thing). The real important news is the awesome return of the old Box Y Lucha covers!

05/25: Mexico, Coacalco, Monterrey, Puebla

ESTO has an interview with Mistico today. He says he’s at 80% – 85%, but can not raise his left arm completely. That sounds not good. It also sounds like surgery might still be an option; he says he do it if not for the support of the fans. He’s happy he’s facing Hector Garza, Mr. Aguila and Terrible tonight, because he figures if he was facing rivals like Averno, Mephisto or Perro Aguayo Jr., they’d attack the injury shoulder and put him out for a long time. On the other hand, La Presna (and I) figure anyone who’s facing Mistico will be samrt enough to attack that shoulder.

ESTO also has a general preview article and the same injury article Ovaciones had yesterday. Seriously, what do I have to do to be on the CMLL (or AAA) press release mailing list?

Here’s the lineup:

CMLL (FRI) 05/25 Arena Mexico
1) Brillante, Flash, Super Nova vs Apocalipsis, Hooligan, Ramstein
2) Alex Koslov, Blue Panther, Negro Casas vs Mephisto, Misterioso II, Sangre Azteca
3) Averno vs Ephesto, Virus, Texano Jr., Leono, Loco Max, Valiente, Sagrado, Heavy Metal, Black Warrior [ciber, LdP]
4) Dr. Wagner Jr., Lizmark Jr., Mistico vs Hector Garza, Mr. Aguila, Terrible

Sagrado’s totally winning. They’re saying Mistico being listed was a “programming error”. Nah. I think they would’ve kept Mistico here if everyone had been healthy, to do another Perro/Mistico match. Since it’s Aguila instead, they’re going to have him at least get one big singles win over a Mistico-alike. I think it’s conceivable Aguila will even beat Mistico, if they want a longer program while Perro is out. If Mistico looks hurt, it’s even more likely – might as well have Aguila beat him up on the way out to set up a much easier to do Mistico/Aguila mask/hair match down the road, they just need to build Aguila up to that level.

Meanwhile…

indy (SUN) 05/27 La Feira de Puebla [El Sol de Puebla]
1) El Hijo del Santo, Super Feria, Super Kiss vs La Serpiente, Monje Loco, Tarahumara

CMLL (SUN) 05/20 Coliseo Coacalco [Black Terry Jr. @ box y lucha]
1) Black Terror, Estigma, Niebla Negra II, Strom b Ave Nocturna, Buitre, Huizar, Super Cometa
2) Rudy Garduno b Niebla Negra I [PROLUM]
3) Black Spider, Black Terry, Celta King, Negro Navarro b Rey de Corazones, Star Boy, Strom, Yakuza
4) India Sioux & Medussa DQ Amapola & Princea Sujei
5) Alex Koslov, Magnifico, Shocker b Atlantis, Efesto, Ultimo Guerrero

Medussa replaced Dark Angel, and naturally turned on her rival India. Efesto started to walk out for his match with no mask on before realizing his mistake. Efesto is a goofball.

AAA (SUN) 05/27 Arena Coliseo Monterrey [rfc]
1) Mercurio, Orus, Virtual X vs Karis, Ramses (Monterrey), The Mummy
2) Mascarita Divina & Sexi Star vs Fabi Apache & Mini Chessman
3) Antifaz & Psicsois II vs Hator & Monsther
4) Crazy Boy, Joe Lider, La Parka Jr. vs Cuervo, Escoria, Ozz

I don’t think Parka’s making this date – it was just a couple days ago where he was way behind schedule. I believe Sexi Star is (or was) out injuried as well. I presume the Mummy split angle has to do with Ramses using his powers as (long dead) egypitian pharoh to take mental control over two of the mummys. Actually, that’s just what I hope the angle is.

CMLL LLA (SUN) 05/27 Gimnasio Nuevo Leon [rfc]
1) Furor & Galactar vs Marrullero & Voltaje Negro
2) Bengali, Cats, Raiden vs Flecha Azul, Koko Viper, Memo Valle
3) Rey Hechizero & Tigre Universitario vs Potro Jr. & Silver Star
4) Stuka Jr. vs Loco Max [super libre]
5) Alex Koslov & Marco Corelone vs Mascara Ano 2000 & Universo 2000

CMLL (MON) 05/28 Arena Puebla [hugo999]
1) Blue Center, Forajio, King Jaguar vs La Mafia, Mr. Rafaga, Murcielago
2) Brillante, Legionario, the Tiger vs Maniacop, Negro Navarro, Siki Osama
3) Euforia, Loco Max, Nosferatu vs Leono, Sagrado, Stuka Jr.
4) Alex Koslov, Mistico, Rey Bucanero vs Averno, Black Warrior, Tarzan Boy
5) Marco Corelone vs Ultimo Guerrero

They’ve been building to that main event for weeks.

MEXICANAL, a tiny channel on DirecTV’s spanish language package, is filming a pilot for a half hour lucha libre show. It should air about a month before the full length season debut, if it gets picked up (which would be a 26 episode load.) The blurb I’m reading about this calls it both lucha libre and “amateur wrestling”, so I dunno what’s going on here. (Thanks to mikeinformer.)

Lourdes Grobets lucha photography will be exhbitied in Madrid, Spain from 05/31 to 07/08.

Milenio has an article on the Blue Demon energy drink as Coca-Cola’s attempt to market to Hispanics.

Box Y Lucha #2819 has Perro and his leg cast.

05/18: Parka Jr. still out, GdI one night team up, Maximo wins tournament

(make sure you check the headline story below, if you haven’t been here this morning.)

Guess who ALSO is still out hurt? La Parka Junior! This is what I get for reading newspapers.

AAA LG (WED) 05/16 Palenque de la Feria, Celaya [El Sol del Bajio]
1) Cuervo, Escoria, Ozz b Crazy Boy, Joe Lider, Juventud Guerrera
2) Estrellita, Rey Cometa, Super Fly b Angel Mortal, Polvo de Esterllas, Rossy Moreno
3) Octagón, Super Calo, Zorro b Antifaz del Norte, Kenzo Suzuki, Muerte Cibernetica

The article does not bring up the vow that Parka would indeed wrestle on these shows. Parka did sign autographs, and ran in during the main event to help the tecnicos. Calo replaced him in the match. Rey Cometa filled in for Pimpinela, so I guess Cometa isn’t hurt. Or less hurt.

Ovaciones reports IWRG and Dragon Gate have signed an talent exhcange agreement. No details. Perhaps if IWRG’s website was up…anyway, Pentagon Black is already working in both places, so I’m not sure what this exactly means. Maybe Turbo will be an IWRG regular? Maybe Veneno will go to Japan (and will he be allowed back in Mexico if he does?) I dunno.

CMLL (THU) 05/17 Arena Isabel de Cuerbavaca [Dark Atlantis @ box y lucha]
1) Bestia Metalia & Epidema b Aspid & Cabllero de Fuego
2) Cholo & Vampiro Metalico DQ Antaris & Robin
3) Eclipse & Olimpico b Alex Koslov & Super Brazo
4) Rey Bucanero, Tarzan Boy, Ultimo Guerrero b Blue Demon Jr., Dr. Wagner Jr., Lizmark Jr. [ri]

One time GdI teamup in a relevos incredible match. Rey teased making this a permanent turn. Bad turnout for the show, though – rain was some part responsible.

CMLL (TUE) 05/15 Arena Queretaro [Knotty @ el martinete]
1) Eragon b Luminoso
2) Rayo Tapatio I & Rayo Tapatio II b Escandalo & Startron
3) Corsario & Espiritu Negro b Principe Valiente Jr. & Toro
4) Maximo b Astro Boy, Flash, Leono, Super Nova, Stuka Jr. [Trofeo Francisco Flores]
5) Blue Demon Jr. & La Mascara b Damian 666 & Mr. Aguila

Super pictures at the link, as usual. Flash replaced a hurt Valiente. I don’t dislike Maximo as much as some of you dislike Maximo and he’s clearly the biggest star in that match, but….he’s quite the odd man out in that crew. By coincidence, ESTO has a interview with Maximo. His goals include getting revenge on Texano Jr., winning the CMLL LH title, and beating Ultimo Guerrero’s mask. It’s good to dream.

CMLL (TUE) 05/29 Arena Queretaro
1) Dark Angel & Marcela vs Amapola & Princesa Sujei
2) Corsario vs Toro [hair]
3) Perro Aguayo Jr. & Terrible vs Dos Caras Jr. & Marco Corelone

Well, that’s the tentative lineup anyway.

(El Sol de Toluca)There was an AAA show advertised for Toluca on Wednesday. I had a lineup for it (though I can’t recall from where – I want to say it was listed on AAA’s site, though it’s not up there now), but apparently the local Box Y Lucha commission didn’t know, and the show didn’t take place. People did buy tickets, but there’s no promoter to get a refund from, and the commission isn’t going to help because they didn’t approve the show.

Do fans commonly know which shows have been okayed by the local commissions? I would find that surprising; this seems more like the commission distancing themselves from the problem.

Yesterday, we had a story with a person complaining about injured wrestlers not being taking care of by promoters in Monclova. Today, in the same paper, the promoter and the injured wrestlers themselves angrily responded. The promoter’s been paying the wrestler’s downside while they’re out. This really should’ve been one article and not two; I don’t know why the promoter had to track down the article writer here.

Jam! has an article about the Vampiro documentary. Read to the end for the story about Vampiro’s girlfriend at the time.

El Heraldo De Chipas has an interview with Sexi Star. The interviewer’s first question is asking what the name means, but it gets a bit more useful from there. Sexi Star says she was in boxing pre-AAA, but her mother preferred she wrestled.

In an (subscriber only) interview with Figure Four Daily, Mike Quackenbush said, in his conversations with the CMLL offices, Mistico costs $3,000 to $3,500 depending on the day, and that’s before flights or additional fees. It’d probably be significantly more for a weekend day in the US, since CMLL would want compensation for those other shows Mistico wouldn’t be making it too, Quackenbush noted.

I’ll preview the Arena Mexico show a bit later.

04/20 AAA TV Results

previous: 03/25, 04/01, 04/15

AAA TV (FRI) 04/20 Estadio Colon De Xalapa [ova]
1) Apocalispis (AAA), Astroman, Erick Montana ?? Dallas Yango, Ricky Estrada, Ringo Estrada
2) Miss Janeth, Rossy Moreno, Tiffany b Cinthia Moreno, Estrellita, Sexy Star
3) Laredo Kid, Pegasso, Rey Cometa, Super Fly b El Apache, Policeman, Super Calo, Toxico
4) Cuervo, Ozz, Scoria b Alan, Billy Boy, Decnnis
5) Charly Manson & Chessman b Kenzo Suzuki & Mesias
6) Elegido, Octagon, Tinieblas Jr., Zorro b Abismo Negro, Antifaz, Histeria, Mr. Niebla

Airs
Mex: 04/29
US: 05/19

Tinieblas Jr. was this show’s La Parka Jr. fill in. Parka appeared on the show to thank the fans.

The Vipers were helping out the Sect/Legion here, not that you can actually tell by the results. Abismo’s crew got involved in the semimain, and Mesias and Chessman got in the main event.

Is Cibernetico hurt again? Doing tag matches that keep him out is one thing – we could at least pretend they were setting up a tag title defense here – but not doing the run-in makes me wonder. He hasn’t looked 100% (but I’m so behind again.)

No details on the Barrio Boys loss, but I can only imagine Billy was acting up. Fabi was replaced in the women’s trio by Cinthia, but surfaced to attack Sexi Star and cost the tecnicas the match. I wonder when we get the mask/hair match?

Next tapings:
04/27 – Hidalgo
– sometime in May – somewhere
