05/18: Parka Jr. still out, GdI one night team up, Maximo wins tournament

(make sure you check the headline story below, if you haven’t been here this morning.)

Guess who ALSO is still out hurt? La Parka Junior! This is what I get for reading newspapers.

AAA LG (WED) 05/16 Palenque de la Feria, Celaya [El Sol del Bajio]
1) Cuervo, Escoria, Ozz b Crazy Boy, Joe Lider, Juventud Guerrera
2) Estrellita, Rey Cometa, Super Fly b Angel Mortal, Polvo de Esterllas, Rossy Moreno
3) Octagón, Super Calo, Zorro b Antifaz del Norte, Kenzo Suzuki, Muerte Cibernetica

The article does not bring up the vow that Parka would indeed wrestle on these shows. Parka did sign autographs, and ran in during the main event to help the tecnicos. Calo replaced him in the match. Rey Cometa filled in for Pimpinela, so I guess Cometa isn’t hurt. Or less hurt.

Ovaciones reports IWRG and Dragon Gate have signed an talent exhcange agreement. No details. Perhaps if IWRG’s website was up…anyway, Pentagon Black is already working in both places, so I’m not sure what this exactly means. Maybe Turbo will be an IWRG regular? Maybe Veneno will go to Japan (and will he be allowed back in Mexico if he does?) I dunno.

CMLL (THU) 05/17 Arena Isabel de Cuerbavaca [Dark Atlantis @ box y lucha]
1) Bestia Metalia & Epidema b Aspid & Cabllero de Fuego
2) Cholo & Vampiro Metalico DQ Antaris & Robin
3) Eclipse & Olimpico b Alex Koslov & Super Brazo
4) Rey Bucanero, Tarzan Boy, Ultimo Guerrero b Blue Demon Jr., Dr. Wagner Jr., Lizmark Jr. [ri]

One time GdI teamup in a relevos incredible match. Rey teased making this a permanent turn. Bad turnout for the show, though – rain was some part responsible.

CMLL (TUE) 05/15 Arena Queretaro [Knotty @ el martinete]
1) Eragon b Luminoso
2) Rayo Tapatio I & Rayo Tapatio II b Escandalo & Startron
3) Corsario & Espiritu Negro b Principe Valiente Jr. & Toro
4) Maximo b Astro Boy, Flash, Leono, Super Nova, Stuka Jr. [Trofeo Francisco Flores]
5) Blue Demon Jr. & La Mascara b Damian 666 & Mr. Aguila

Super pictures at the link, as usual. Flash replaced a hurt Valiente. I don’t dislike Maximo as much as some of you dislike Maximo and he’s clearly the biggest star in that match, but….he’s quite the odd man out in that crew. By coincidence, ESTO has a interview with Maximo. His goals include getting revenge on Texano Jr., winning the CMLL LH title, and beating Ultimo Guerrero’s mask. It’s good to dream.

CMLL (TUE) 05/29 Arena Queretaro
1) Dark Angel & Marcela vs Amapola & Princesa Sujei
2) Corsario vs Toro [hair]
3) Perro Aguayo Jr. & Terrible vs Dos Caras Jr. & Marco Corelone

Well, that’s the tentative lineup anyway.

(El Sol de Toluca)There was an AAA show advertised for Toluca on Wednesday. I had a lineup for it (though I can’t recall from where – I want to say it was listed on AAA’s site, though it’s not up there now), but apparently the local Box Y Lucha commission didn’t know, and the show didn’t take place. People did buy tickets, but there’s no promoter to get a refund from, and the commission isn’t going to help because they didn’t approve the show.

Do fans commonly know which shows have been okayed by the local commissions? I would find that surprising; this seems more like the commission distancing themselves from the problem.

Yesterday, we had a story with a person complaining about injured wrestlers not being taking care of by promoters in Monclova. Today, in the same paper, the promoter and the injured wrestlers themselves angrily responded. The promoter’s been paying the wrestler’s downside while they’re out. This really should’ve been one article and not two; I don’t know why the promoter had to track down the article writer here.

Jam! has an article about the Vampiro documentary. Read to the end for the story about Vampiro’s girlfriend at the time.

El Heraldo De Chipas has an interview with Sexi Star. The interviewer’s first question is asking what the name means, but it gets a bit more useful from there. Sexi Star says she was in boxing pre-AAA, but her mother preferred she wrestled.

In an (subscriber only) interview with Figure Four Daily, Mike Quackenbush said, in his conversations with the CMLL offices, Mistico costs $3,000 to $3,500 depending on the day, and that’s before flights or additional fees. It’d probably be significantly more for a weekend day in the US, since CMLL would want compensation for those other shows Mistico wouldn’t be making it too, Quackenbush noted.

I’ll preview the Arena Mexico show a bit later.

05/01: Puebla, Mistico set to challenge for fifth title, magazines

cmll

CMLL (MON) 04/30 Arena Puebla [hugo999 @ box y lucha]
1) Forajido, the Tiger, Zigma b Aguila Guerrera, Espiritu Maligno, Fuerza Tiger
2) Fuerza Chicana, Furia Chicana, Karissma b Coco Blanco, Coco Rojo, Coco Verde
3) Loco Max, Ohara, Okumura, Toro Bill Sr. b Leono, Starman, Tigre Blanco, Tigre Metalico
4) Atlantis, Ultimo Guerrero, Universo 2000 b Alex Koslov, Marco Corelone, Texano Jr.
5) Rey Bucanero b Hector Garza [CMLL LH]

Leono and Toro Bill Sr. fight for their hairs next week.

WWA (FRI) 05/25 Auditorio de Tijuana [rey_misterio_tj @ Satanico’s Mansion]
1) La Mascara, Mistico, Sagrado vs Averno, Ephesto, Mephisto [WWA TRIOS]

This is Mora’s anniversary show and such, but really – belt #5! Theoretically, the Trio of Terror could win the trios belts, but I see Averno and Mistico in there, so I suspect I know the ending. These belts were last held by the Brazos in ’98, so they’re vacant (and pretty meaningless, but whatever.)

Gililo @ el Martiente has photos from the LLX show in Guadalajara. Meanwhile, amateur @ box y lucha says wrestlers didn’t go on with the next show in LLX, because they weren’t getting paid.

Magazines
Guerreros del Ring #85 has KeMonito as Godzilla.
Box Y Lucha #2816 has Perro beating Mistico

My San Antonio has a review of Dan Madigan’s lucha libre book.

“Mondo Lucha A Go-Go” is a book that is well worth its price in photos alone and one that followers of lucha libre will want for their collection.

Santo was in Chicago on Friday as part of the Association of Hispanic Advertising Agencies conference.

IWRG’s site is still down.

04/27: AAA TV, Mexico Preview, Puebla, Chicago

cmll

AAA’s got a taping today. Perhaps you’ve forgotten the lineup – it was only announced four weeks ago. The big main event is a six way cage match: Cibernetico, Chessman, El Elegido, El Mesias, Abismo Negro, and whoever replaces La Parka Jr. Semimain is a incredible atomico.

Arena Mexico previews
– Ovaciones
ESTO
Notimex
Mundo de Hoy.

The big show this week is Sunday – I expect that to sell out, and I would guess around 8 or 9,000 here. Main: mini monkey madness. The Perro/Mistico face off in the semimain is getting more attention. No one seems to care about the women’s cibernetico. I guess I will! (If you’re Henrik, or would like to be, skip down to the **************.)

Thanks for coming
Diosa Maya
Seductora
Atenea

Gotta figure this whole match airs somewhere, because what other people is bringing in random people except to put them on TV? I don’t quite understand why this is a 14 person match, but maybe someone here will surprise us and earn a more regular spot. (The bigger achievement is a 12 fall women’s match with no Dark Angel not testing the fans patience.) They’ll be the first three out, at any rate.

Regulars with little chance
Sahori
Medussa
Luna Magica
Rosa Negra
Princesa Blanca
Diana la Cazadora

If Sahori or Luna Magica advance and we get them in singles matches, I may lose my mind. Blanca’s probably not much better, but we don’t see her much. Medussa’s a non-factor, but Rosa Negra has looked good the last couple times I’ve seen her, and I wouldn’t mind her advancing past her normal position here. She’s not going to, but oh well. Diana need work in the ring, but she’s got enough personality and looks that I’m sure they’d do more with her if they had a chance. Her schedule makes her unlikely

Remember, we’re advancing two people from here to a match next week. I’m presuming it’ll be ruda vs tecnica…

Rudas with a real chance
3) La Nazi
2) Princesa Sujei
1) Amapola

The Pierroth influence seems to be on a down ebb the last six months. I don’t know if he’s lost influence, or if they’re just taking a break before ramping him back up again. As long as he’s around and La Nazi is connected with him, I think there’s a chance she could win the title. It’s the least chance of the final five, but there’s an obvious big/small story you can do for the final, and they’ve done it well in trios.

All I ever seem to say about Princesa Sujei is “she seemed much better in AAA”, but she’s been okay in CMLL. A Sujei title reign doesn’t particularly interest me – her big rival is Dark Angel and obviously that won’t work – but she’d be a fine enough opponent to put over one of the tecnicas.

Amapola is the best Mexican ruda female worker of the moment and would be a really fun champion. The problem is, the last time Amapola had a big Arena Mexico singles match, she kinda walked out of the building without letting anyone see much of the her freshly unmasked face, and CMLL was very unhappy. I don’t know if CMLL is over that; I’ll be remained ever convinced she was passed over for the CMLL title for that reason, and it’s not like CMLL gets over things very quickly. I think Amapola’s a strong bet for moving on, because it’ll be the best match, but I don’t know from there.

Tecnicas with a real chance
2) India Sioux
1) Marcela

That’s it. That’s the list.

India’s not ready for a big spot like this, unless they’ve been secretly working on the title match or something. It’s way too soon to give her a title – she’s an appealing tecnica, and I think India challenging for a title against a respected but evil ruda is one of the few things in this division that might be a draw, and I wouldn’t give it up this quick. You could do worse than having India in the title match; unless one of the unknowns shows up big, this is a weak tecnica side.

Is Marcela the best Mexican tecnica worker of the moment? Yea, I think so. She’s quality, but she’s missing a spark that makes you realy want to see her. Marcela seems like a great secondary tecnica, a fine worker who could be the top women’s sidekick or put over the feared ruda to build her up for another challenger. I don’t think she’s a top star, and it’s really impossible for her to be when Dark Angel and Lady Apache are ahead of her.

The Mexican Women’s Belt, it really means nothing at the moment. It was part of Lady Apache’s wardrobe, not a meaningful championship. Having Amapola face Marecla, the best possible match from this lineup, would be a good first step in making something of it, but the most important part is what they do with the belt after the title match. They’re investing too much time to just forget about it in a couple weeks.

**************

Ovaciones and AAA’s site talk about La Parka Jr., El Brazo and Chucky visiting a children’s hospital. I say this everytime, but I totally wouldn’t be sending CHUCKY to a children’s hospital. Still, it’s a nice gesture. A lot of lucha types seem to take time to visit with kids during this weekend every year.

CMLL (FRI) 03/30 Arena Puebla
1) Alex Koslov, Lizmark Jr., Marco Corelone vs Atlantis, Ultimo Guerrero, Universo 2000
2) Rey Bucanero vs Hector Garza [CMLL LH]

VIP has rescheduled their next show for 05/12. Perros del Mal are not on the lineup. They’re running a small fair show on Sunday for Kid’s Day as well.

Perro Aguayo Jr. wants people to keep voting for him, so he stays on his reality show. Fair enough.

the Yahoo Picture Wire has a bunch of shots from a recent Coliseo Guadalajara show.

Blue Demon Jr. will be in Chicago tomorrow to sign autographs and promote his energy drink. I’m surprised that no one local is trying to split the cost and run a show with him….

OH! Someone is!

Scheduled: Blue Demon Jr., Mascara Sagrada, Casandro, La Parkita, Tzuki, Espectritio, Pequeno Violencia, Aguila del America, Lancer 2000, Guerrerito del Futuro, SWAT Kat, Lupillo el Terrible, Aguila Tapatia Jr., Halcon Galactico, Mia Martinez, Great Cheyene.

Friday: (150 W Illinois Ave., Aurora, IL); doors open 6, bell at 6:30
Saturday: (351 Oakwood Ave., Waukegan, IL); doors open 6, bell at 7
Tickets are $10 for kids, $25 for general, $30 for ringside (329 Mexican pesos)

After my freakout/meltdown with the last show I tried to go to, I’ve kinda distanced myself from such things for a bit. This one is 15 mintes from my house, so even though I’ve seen all the names on this list live at this point, I sorta have to go, right? Maybe.

(HoyInternet) There’s a lucha show in LA on Sunday, including Los Chivos and Magno.

Not to say Mistico’s a star, El Universal has a story about his face being partially exposed in a Black Warrior mask, plus a photo of the Incident. That’s all the article is. The people at El Universal don’t watch the TV show much, I’m thinking.

IWRG’s site is still down.

GdR #70

aired 03/24, taped 03/16, 03/18

Thought this was a good show this week. Main event was fun – not a great match, but enjoyable. Women’s trios was fine – Luna Magica was awful on the first time she was in (that we saw) but things picked up from there. Nothing really meaningful here, they didn’t even seem to play up Mistico/Ultimo fighting here and teaming later (not that they ever do), but a good hour. The Bucanero segments were even okay.

It’s nice to have a break from the Mexico segunda guys.

03/16: Puebla, Dos Leyendas, Mexico preview

CMLL (THU) 03/15 Arena Puebla
1) Fenix & Kirvan b Ares & La Mafia
2) Bobby Jack, Karissman, Siki Osama Jr. b Centella de Oro, SWAT, Tigre Rojo
3) Dark Angel, Lady Apache, Marcela b Amapola, Hiroka, Nazi
4) Eclipse, Misterioso II, Sangre Azteca b Coco Blanco, Coco Rojo, Coco Verde
5) Dr. Wagner, Rey Bucanero, Shocker DQ Efesto, Olimpico, Ultimo Guerrero

Efesto replaced Tarzan Boy, who seems to miss Puebla every other week.

Lots of articles on CMLL’s 03/30 Dos Leyenda press conference
– They officially announced the High Society group that’s been talked about for a few weeks. Shocker, Bucanero, Corelone and Koslov are in the group. They hope to recruit every metrosexual wrestler. Is Maximo the new member?
– Universo and Marco talked trash. Usual experience vs youth.
– This will be the first Ticketmaster show (though they’re not up there yet, as far as I can see.)
– Perro Aguayo Jr. is going to be filming a reality show. I think this is what the documentary bit yesterday was about. He’ll be scaling back his non-Mexico City wrestling while he’s working on it.

Sources: CMLL, La Presna (what’s the deal with Shocker’s shirt?), La Jornada, ESTO (1 2), Ovaciones.

ESTO has a preview of tonight’s card. Nothing special. They’ve also got stories about the VIP show

Tonight’s lineup:

CMLL (FRI) 03/16 Arena Mexico
1) Sombra de Plata & Super Nova vs Polvora & Vaquero
2) Dark Angel, Luna Magica, Sahori vs Hiroka, Mima Shimoda, Princesa Sujei
3) Blue Panther, Felino, Mictlan vs Ephesto, Mephisto, Misterioso Jr.
4) Heavy Metal, Sagrado, Volador Jr. vs Atlantis, Sangre Azteca, Universo 2000
5) Alex Koslov, Marco Corleone, Shocker vs Damian 666, Hector Garza, Hijo del Perro Aguayo

Two weeks out, and the big push looks to be behind the new tecnico unit, which has nothing to do with the big show. They’re not really building anything for 03/30 here (though I’m sure Universo will distract Corelone in the main event or something), almost like someone completely different booked this card and the 03/30.

01/27: Mexico, GdR

CMLL (FRI) 01/26 Arena Mexico Results [ova]
1) Tigre Blanco, Tigre Metálico b Calígula, Mesala
2) Dr. X, Misterioso II, Shigeo Okumura b Mascara Purpura, Metro, Virus
3) Atlantis, Eclipse, Sangre Azteca DQ Blue Panther, Sagrado, Último Dragón
4) Lizmark Jr., Mascara Ano 2000, Shocker DQ LA Park, Marco Corelone, Último Guerrero
5) Dos Caras Jr., Místico, Rey Bucanero DQ el Hijo del Perro Aguayo, Halloween, Terrible

Three straight DQs. At least they were all different DQs
3) Sangre was DQed for yanking off Ultimo Dragon’s mask and going crazy on him.
4) Marco was DQed for excessive violence on Shocker after already beating him
5) Perro was DQed for a foul on Rey

I think the Sangre one is going somewhere, the Marco one was just to establish him as angry man after losing his hair to Shocker, and the Perros one was a usual Perros one. Ovaciones has a story about a CMLL photographer getting in the way of a Mistico dive by being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

There’s a brief article from the Antonio Pena tribute, and Ovaciones also has an interview with Sepulturero, who talks up his (non existent) chances of beating Mistico for his mask tonight.
