Blue Demon, Daga, Killer Kross beat La Parka, Psycho Clown, Puma King
(14:40, Blue Demon foul La Parka, ok, 02:28:54)

What happened:

not sure why they used a ladder but it worked

Nino Hamburgesa & Chik Tormenta were the seconds for the TLC match. TLC matches – AAA singles matches in general – don’t often have seconds. They needed them here so they could hold the mist material for the finish. Pagano makes no attempt to be sneaky about getting it from Nino Hamburguesa about 10 seconds before he uses it. There’s also a double table spot in this match where Pagano misses his table entirely.

Suicide earned a title match with Drago at some point. Everyone in that match earned a beating from Killer Kross for some reason, with Puma showing up to run him off.

Lady Maravilla and Big Mami again got involved in the finish of the mixed tag match.

Thoughts:

Suicide going in circles

Not a lot of thoughts on this one. Two tapings in back to back days will always make me run dry. Especially so when I was watching this sick. There’s also not a lot of new stuff when they’re running back to back tapings. The main event was a good example of this, the same usual AAA match with a couple of different people plugged into it. No Wagner meant no feud with Blue Demon, but the rest was the usual La Parka & Psycho Clown offense. It was fine but nothing to sink into.

Los Mercenarios came across as an effective unit by the end of the semi-main, instead of just the bumbling foils they usually do. They let Vikingo kill himself on a missed tope, they threw Laredo Kid far away and they just totally took out Lady Shani. Prior to that, the rudos did well in basing for the big tecnico big spots. La Hiedra seems like she’s fit in with her new team well, though she did seem to stay out of the way for most of this match. Not sure this is going to work as well with Myzteziz & La Parka replacing Laredo Kid & Lady Shani, but you can see the sort of idea.

The TLC match was a Pagano/Chessman match, complete with an insane dumb spot. They bled a lot. They did big prop spots not thinking about what they’d mean in the match (but they’ll look cool later in a clip). There was really no reason for it to be a TLC match, they only used the ladders as something to crash thru. It could’ve just been a table match or a regular extreme match, and it is strange they had Pagano win definitely (even getting his revenge mist spot) if they had planned on keeping the feud going. This does give the insanity you’d want from Pagano & Chessman if you want it at all.

Myzteziz coming thru

The five-way had all the moves. Just all the moves, with not much more for them. It would’ve worked better in a smaller building or a Naucalpan one and got a muted one here. The foul person superkick to Villano III Jr. got a better reaction than a lot of the tricky spots they did because the fans understood that. They wasn’t really an escalation of moves or a direction like you’d – the Golden Magic Cuerno Bomb probably should’ve been saved for another day if it wasn’t going to be the finish. These matches have a limited ceiling for me because either the work has to be great (and it was sloppy, more so early) or they have to do a story other than seeing every move and someone breaking it up. That’s all this was.

The segunda was the usual Niño Hamburguesa match, right down to the interference. It was also the usual Hijo del Tirantes/Faby Apache bits. Tessa seemed to do more here and might have been a better base than Halcón 78 Junior. You can tell AAA really likes her because they’ve made a point of her getting the winning pins when they usually don’t pay attention.

The opener was an easy, perfectly fine match that gave a few Dragon Bane highspots while keeping the main feud going. This feud could use the same rest that some of the other ones are getting, there’s no need to be doing it on every taping, but at least it didn’t overpower the match. Mami is beloved. Halcón 78 Jr. is pretty low on the totem pole to be taking the loss here.

Killer Kross, Rey Escorpión, Texano Jr. beat Puma King, Pagano, Psycho Clown
(13:23, Texano senton Pagano, ok, 02:21:10)

What happened:

Golden Magic moonsault

The main event was a no DQ match, which mostly was an excuse for a lot of cookie pan spots. Chessman spit mist in Pagano’s face, setting up Texano’s sequence for the win.

A segment that started with Puma King calling out Killer Kross saw a lot more people involved. Daga explained he was here to win titles and apparently was using the Perros del Mal music for the cheap pop. (He stopped after this, switching to the RED theme.) They ended up fighting, with Villano III Jr., Chessman, Laredo Kid, Hijo del Vikingo, Killer Kross and Pagano all getting involved. Kross fouled Pagano.

The finish of the mixed tag was a bit of a mess. Myzteziz tried a top rope 450 on both Suicide & Tormenta, and instead ended up landing boot first on Tormenta’s head. Referee Piero and ringside people notice immediately and work to get her out of the way and medical attention. At the same time, Lady Maravilla comes down for the planned distraction of Nino Hamburguesa. Myzteziz tries to drag Maravilla away. They stall long enough that Tormenta’s cleared out and Hamburguesa lands his splash on just Suicide. Tormenta is shockingly uninjured and wrestles the following day.

Thoughts:

this wasn’t supposed to work out this way, but it did work

The main event went a while, didn’t do much for me. It may be me more than the match, which had decent action and the weapons stuff made it feel different than the rest of the card. Pagano was not good but he’s Pagano. Kross & Puma as an ongoing feud is weird – where are they even going after having already done a one-sided singles match?

The semi-main was the best match of the show easily. I was a lot of action and two teams on the same page. I thought it was Daga’s best performance since being back. Villano III Jr. continues to be willing to eat a lot of big moves and keep on going. Vikingo did some crazy things. Flamita should be the only guy who gets to do the 450 splash. They went back and forth breaking up pins a lot, which kind of stopped the momentum form building match, and the tight space prevented them from doing a lot outside the ring.

The women’s tag was a solid match if missing a little bit of excitement. It was weird how much La Hiedra seemed to be in the match; she seemed to take about 80% of it for her team. Tessa worked well with the Mexicans, but most of her time was spent setting up Hijo del Tirantes spots. They didn’t make her into as big a deal as they could’ve in her debut, she came off more as a random foreigner dropped in an unrelated feud.

Myzteziz really struggled in his match. The 450 at the end was a topper, a spot that didn’t have a great chance of working, but a lot of his other offense just looked off. He and Suicide didn’t mesh. Hamburguesa did a lot of what we had just seen with Big Mami. Chik Tormenta was fine but this one wasn’t going to be saved.

I didn’t like the mixed 2v2 tag at first. It came around a bit in the end, but the rudo control section wasn’t much. Halcón 78 Jr. is just a big guy, which saved Astrolux a time or two but doesn’t show a lot more while he’s on offense. Astrolux looked spectacular in his opportunities to do big spots, though it wasn’t as many of those as earlier these matches. These people all didn’t really fit together, they still did enough to make the crowd get into the match

The opener was a good quick high spot match. They did look sloppy at times, especially early, but they went a good length to do a lot of big spots and not run out of ideas. Dragon Bane seemed more in control than in other matches. Golden Magic borrowing one of Bandido’s big moves is amusing.

All 2019 round-up posts2019 MOTYC list

I think I’m back on the right dates now.

No AAA means a slow week. Negro Casas turned back the clock in his lightning match with Soberano. CMLL doesn’t usually work this way, but maybe it was got them to run the title match program. Templario seems like he’s turning the clock aheadin his matches.

Watching indie shows really slows this process down. I’m pretty sure I could be caught up if I just focused on CMLL, but I’d just be watching CMLL and go insane.

  3. Último Guerrero inside cradle (8:23)

What happened:

wheelbarrow destruction

Disturbio interfered often to help Mascara Año 2000 as his second, including breaking up a Pulpo Guerrero with referee Edgar turned around. Gran Guerrero got into a fight with Disturbio after that one, causing both of them to be thrown out. A few moments later, all of the Dinamitas (Sansón, Cuatrero, Forastero, Universo 2000 Jr., and Hijo de Mascara Año 2000) came out as a referee distraction. Mascara Año 2000 tried to sneak in a foul kick, but Guerrero blocked it and easily cradled him for the win. The Dinamitas stormed the ring and attacked Guerrero. Security quickly got involved.

Gran Guerrero & Euforia won the tag titles from Diamante Azul & Valiente.

Kaho Kobayashi lost her hair to Amapola, than sat in the ring and got her hair cut.

Metalico’s career came to an end by losing to Virus.

Thoughts:

maybe they need to rethink this spot

Many people on this card showed a lot more than was expected of them going in. Mascara Año 2000 was not one of them. The main event had tons of smoke and mirrors by CMLL standards, with Disturbio being as active as the guy he was seconding. Último Guerrero still forced in a few of his usual moves. Mascara 2000 tried, he just didn’t have much to add. This crowd was into everything, which kept this from ever feeling sad, but it wasn’t ever anything great. The post match seemed to tease a lot more to come, which would all have to be better than this match.

The semimain was unnecessary and rushed, but it was the easy fun match it was meant to be. The técnicos did their usual bits but looked sharp doing them. The crowd loved cheering for the rudos and booing Místico. It didn’t hit the peaks of other versions of this match, but it also never really had the time to do so.

Gran Guerrero & Euforia winning the tag team titles won’t be remembered as much, though it is a lot better to see them with the championships. Diamante Azul gave the effort of a man who was not happy to be losing the titles, and Valiente topes couldn’t make the match alone. Los Guerreros showed their usual good team work but didn’t have much to work with here. There’s potential for them to have a lot better opponents down the line. Most opponents will be better than this.

UG was making sure Mascara was going down

Amapola delivered her best performance in years in the hair match. The match wasn’t perfect – the first two falls seemed cut down as if a consequence of the long-running show. There were times where they seemed to be running out of gas; the battle to get the superplex stuck out. The superplex did look great when they got it to work, and the match had more exciting moments than it seemed like it would at first. The casual crowd wanted to boo Kaho, assuming the foreigner was the evil one as usual, but she kept winning them over with her offense and by coming close to a win. Kaho kept fighting back, even when she got demolished by Amapola’s toe con giro, and the image of her stoically taking the hair cut was memorable.

Virus & Metálico exceeded all expectations. The crowd completely bought into the gravity of the match from go, and both men lived up to the atmosphere. This might have been Metalico’s best match of his career and it goes right along the classics Virus has had. They took this very seriously, hitting each other very hard (and playing off the idea that there’s no way this was ending with a cheap DQ, so punches and questionably low shots were in play.) Virus had his usual bit of stunning reversals, while Metálico went deep in to playbook to pull out moves from him that we haven’t seen since he and Tigre Blanco were still a team. Both men seemed to slow down after the really hot first ten minutes, but they came back strong during the last moments of the match. I really liked Virus killing Metálico with big move after big move until it was finally enough, something completely different than how CMLL usually handles big matches. A lot of this felt different than the big CMLL matches and it;ll be reminded a lot longer for that reason.

The segunda had some cool spots, with the second fall finish coming off well. It lacked the urgency of the opener and felt more like people going thru the usual offense than doing something bigger. Soberano insisting on taking a destroyer in every match is actually good because we’ll be able to easily identify him actually learning something about wrestling when he finally stops doing it.

The opener was worked at a pace suggesting they had no time to mess around. I wish they always had no time to mess around because it produced a heavy action match. This was fully big show effort at work, with Kawato pulling out a dive as impressive as Misterioso actually doing the ring post spear spot to set up a Cometa one. The effort paid off well though, and they got the most out of this time. Kawato & Black Panther is definitely an idea, it remains to be seen if it is a good one.

this is when Kawato decided which Panther not to go after

What happened:

Kaho

Cavernario cheated to beat Místico in the main event, setting up a singles match next week

Sansón & Cuatrero ran in to attack Último Guerrero when Mascara 2000 was in danger of being put in the Pulpo Guerrero.

Tiger beat both Triton and Esfinge to win, though that seemed partly because Hechicero got himself eliminated after suffering thru an injury. He wasn’t shown again.

Kaho hyped the hair match after her trios match.

Thoughts:

this doesn’t seem fun

The main was totally disappointing, a sub 7-minute match with not the action to make up for the time. The técnico offense was nearly limited to the same Místico led dive run that happens in every match with him. They could’ve done a lot more and still gotten to the same ending and they instead ended with one of the quickest shows in recent memory. This wasn’t acceptable as a main event.

The semi-main was surprisingly not over for a feud scheduled to headline the next major CMLL show in two weeks. The crowd was way into the previous match but this didn’t do a thing for them. It didn’t do much for me either, with the Guerreros not doing any of their flying and the Hijos del Infienro not doing anything in particular. Mascara & UG have a wild brawling spot and not much more, and that wasn’t close to enough here.

Negro Casas did a lot more in the lightning match than normal and survived it better than Soberano. The Canadian Destroyer wasn’t needed, didn’t look good, and didn’t get the reaction the casita did, but everything else went well. The dive catch post spot looked brutal, as did the powerbomb Soberano almost lost him out, but that part enhanced the match. I wouldn’t have tried the fosberry flop dive on Negro Casas but Soberano trusted him and it worked out, like most of the match.

the timing here is pretty great

First two falls of the tercera were pretty hot. Not as much in the third fall to keep it that level. Maybe it was derailed a bit by Hechicero’s injury, though Tiger beating two técnicos made for a different ending than usual. Cometa was the best técnico easily.

The women’s match went a while, built towards big spots at the end and had a quick happy ending. No surprise the crowd liked it. It felt too similar to everything else I’m using to seeing from them for it really to stand out for me, but the effort was still strong. Kaho is likeable enough for the Mexico crowd not to just to root for the (evil) Mexican, which is pretty hard to do.

Magia Blanca was generally better working with Akuma this week than when he was with Espanto last week but still made some hysterically bad looking moves. The Silver King headscissors spot was a good try gone wrong. The first fall springboard headscissors was never going to work unless gravity was suddenly disabled. Everyone else was fine, Espanto wasn’t as horrendous as last week. It wasn’t boring.

bye Audaz

Recapped: 05/28/19

This isn’t a full review of this show, but enough of the matches popped up on this indie watch list that just focusing on it seemed worthwhile.

All matches from Arena Naucalpan, 03/17/2019

Matches:

Freelance vs Audaz
(10:32, good,
mluchatv)

Audaz had the shiny gear but Freelance had the shiny wrestling. The tone of the match was established early on, when Audaz tried to do a tricky rope run and fell down, then Freelance did his own and nailed it perfectly. Audaz can do cool spots but was outdone with them in this match by Freelance, who also landed them much more effectively. This match never developed more than an exhibition of those highspots but it flew by and seemed less than the 10 minutes it went.

Freelance

Súper Nova vs Iron Kid
(11:14, good,
mluchatv)

The Super Nova/Iron Kid was a better laid out match then Freelance/Audaz. It just didn’t have the excitement, with Nova doing a professional but relatively sane match for Naucalpan standards. Iron Kid’s out of control dives were the things that woke me up. Super Nova seemed to want to make a point about how they didn’t need to go crazy to have a good match and it was a good match, it just wasn’t a lot more than that.

that’s a lot of twists

Sádico vs Hijo de Canis Lupus
(17:23, great,

Hey, it’s the annual Sadico spectacular, somehow not featuring Flamita this year. It’s only March, I guess there’s still time for that. Hijo de Canis makes a worthy substitute in a match that puts everything together. They do some good back and forth on holds early on, it escalates into scray dives, and there’s big moves that keep the match going and going. Sadico messing up his chair dive was sad, but deciding to make it up by going headfirst towards the floor was a solid make good. Lupus matched him when he needed, including the big dive that wiped them out over the barricade, and they made this come off as an important outcome by the end. This match felt better put together than most of the Lupus matches I’ve seen, which seems like a Sadico thing. However it go there, it got to the end really well.

sometimes you just need to clothesline a dude

Dragón Bane vs Soberano Jr.
(10:19, ok,
mluchatv)

Soberano’s struggles at putting together good matches outside of CMLL (and outside of trios) continues. This was a total empty calories match, full of fireworks dives and absolutely no substance. There’s no story here, and it is unclear either of these guys know there can be a story in matches, just different ways to fall on their head they’ve seen in other matches. The big spots have to be absolutely nailed to make this not feel silly, and the head drops they came back in to do didn’t look so good. I usually try to avoid spoiling direct finishes in these. The finish here is so terrible that it needs to be mentioned. Dragon Bane gives Soberano a head drop, then takes a bump for no reason, and both men carefully position an arm over each other for a totally unconvincing double pin. It is terrible, the kind of finish that must’ve only been approved because the people in charge didn’t want to deal with these guys any longer. There are far worse matches that get the same grade but few were as frustrating at the finish.

that said, being able to fold up on the tope was cool

Aramis vs Ángel de Oro
(11:52, great,
mluchatv)

I was surprised about how much Angel de Oro took from Aramis in their match. That was the smart way to do the match, tease Aramis getting the big upset for as long as possible until Angel de Oro put him away. Aramis landing the spinning torture rack looked super impressive and he didn’t seem to lose anything by Oro surviving time after time. Aramis looked super smooth thru this match. Angel de Oro didn’t do a whole lot but what he did mattered, and he kind of just gave a platform to Aramis to take the fight to the bigger star.

Aramis being smooth

Laredo Kid vs Imposible
(12:55, good,
+LuchaTV)

Laredo Kid & Imposible drifted back towards moves just for moves sake. Being the sixth match (of those I’m watching) on this show made that a harder sell than it might’ve been isolated. They had a much better variety of moves than Soberano/Dragon Bane and not a stupid ending, so it wasn’t a big problem. It never got more than surface deep, but Laredo Kid is spectacular enough that they can get by with just some cool spots.
