10/14: Mexico, Flash

CMLL (TUE) 10/14 Arena Mexico [ESTO]
1) Carrona & Cholo? ?? Molotov & Sombra de Plata
2) Angel Azteca Jr., Angel de Oro, Hijo del Faraon b Calígula, Cholo, Méssala
3) Arkangel de la Muerte, Vangelis, Virus b Leono, Máscara Púrpura, Stuka Jr.
4) Máximo, Mictlán, Valiente b Dragon Rojo Jr., Ephesto, Olímpico
5) Héctor Garza, Hijo del Fantasma, La Máscara b Misterioso II, Negro Casas, Rey Bucanero

Garza won, but Rey went after his (chronically hurt) knee to make sure Hector wouldn’t be 100% for their Sunday title match.

Ovaciones has a Goddess interview (who would like to be a good wrestler and a not a WWE diva-ish) and an Arturo Rivera column (nothing that new.)

SoloLuchas has a interview with Flash, who says there should more interviews with the guys in the first couple of matches. I’m all for that. Flash has no idea when he and Stuka will be defending the Arena Coliseo Tag Titles. Flash says he got the gimmick because they (I think this means the school he started with) were going to do a Justice League group, and now he’s just keeping it. He suggested changing to CMLL when he started there, but nothing happened. Shocking!

Psycho Clown is selling his masks via his myspace. I like how his three top friends are Super Porky’s daughters and Super Porky. Way to keep the identity quiet.

LuchandoLibre previews Friday’s Arena Neza indy TV taping, with Wagner, Intocable, Mil Mascaras and LA Park.

Al filo del Ring has a video interview with El Hijo del Santo hyping up Friday’s Arena Naucalpan show. Why are these shows on the same day, the same week WWE is coming in and CMLL is running a hair match?

AAA celerbates Alebrije hitting the ten year mask, one month late.

Dr. Mascaras asks “when was the last time two of Cibernetico, Mesias, Zorro or Chessman were not in an AAA TV main event.” That’d be July 31st. As long as I’m trolling SuperLuchas, why do they always write “Marco Corelone (Mark Jindrak)“? I’m pretty sure Hijo de Lizmark’s name isn’t really Hijo de Lizmark, Tony Rivera’s name isn’t really Tony Rivera and people are well aware wrestlers may not be using their true name without it being pointed out every single time. Where it works for the Observer is to illuminate the identities of those who have recently changed names or locations; I think we all know Marco Corelone is Mark Jindrak by now.

And if this becomes moot by Friday or the Friday after that, at lesat I’ve gotten the rant out of my system.

Cesar @ Box Y Lucha, breaking down moves he thinks are not working, points out there are far too many superkicks being used as incidental moves, and I’m totally behind that idea. I disagree later where he thinks back crackers are fine, because those are being used just as much in both groups.

LuchaWorld has Robert on 4/22/06 AAA and 5/5/06 CMLL. WrestlingObserver has their CMLL on FSE recap.

SuperLuchas has instructions on how to printout out and create a Dragon Rojo paper airplane. This may be how I spend my lunch break today.

10/09: Paco Alonso on CMLL, Dr. X, Mistico out longer?, Pena, Ovaciones/WWE, Marco/Lizmark

Bam Bams new look/CMLL
Bam Bam's new look/CMLL

Paco Alonso, living in a different world than the rest of us:
– “we are not sleeping on our laurels”
– “we believe we have three or four guys who can be as good as Mistico, or better”
– “lucha libre is now in a boom”
– plans for CMLL to go to Russia, Poland, and Czechoslovakia. Czechoslovakia hasn’t been a country since 1992.

Meanwhile, while everyone thing is supposedly running great in CMLL

Dr. X tells SoloLuchas that if he doesn’t get matches and TV time to be promoted by the end of the year, he’s leaving. He says he’d never looked at going to AAA or leaving for IWRG, but if they came calling now, he’d probably end up going – he’s done all he can, but CMLL isn’t giving him oppurtinies or matches. Dr. X asked for time off when his wife miscarried theri child, but CMLL asked him to work and he worked. He worked when his father died. Now, CMLL won’t give him any work at all.

– echoing the story that was teased in Box Y Lucha, the Wrestling Observer is reporting Mistico re-injured his shoulder trying to get back to wrestling quicker, and will be out until late November or early December.

Antonio Pena’s remembrance was covered in a couple places. La Oreja talks to his family, and notes Konnan held Pena’s remains hostage at a mass in his honor. SoloLuchas gets quotes from Aerostar, Super Fly and Polvo de Estrellas.

Some reactions around about the Ovaciones story yesterday. SuperLuchas notes the general pattern of seeing lucha libre as unblemished and WWE as the devil incarnate, and seems to wish for more honest arguments if arguments are going to be made. To one of the major points in the story, they relate a conversation with DF Commissioner El Fantasma about Super Astro and Ultraman remasking (as Rey Jr. has done). Fantasma cited the rule allowing wrestlers to remask after five years, and has no problem with them choosing to use the same mask. Guess that’s our answer for Silver King too.

Ovaciones also runs a followup interview with El Fantasma, talking about Rey Jr and his mask. It’s back to the regular guy on the lucha beat, by the way. Fantasma says Rey did not wear the mask in CMLL, asked for permission just to wear into the ring, and the commission had no problem with that at that time, so there’s a history of working with Rey on these issues. They’re not so happy with Rey putting up his mask again in WWE (against Kane, this past Sunday), but it’s out of their jurisdiction. Fantasma sees WWE getting on Televisa/TV Azteca as similar to when lucha got back on TV in the 90s – at first, it will hurt attendance because of curiosity, but people will slowly return to the shows because it’s so much better live. Fantasma notes he’s got no authority to take WWE off TV anyway.

ESTO’s notes column has some good info today: as mentioned on CMLL TV, Marco and Lizmark square off in a hair match next Friday. That’s right in the middle of the WWE Mexico Tour, so I guess plans are now to compete instead of laying low (even though they’re so not worried.) Also, Blue Panther will have a anniversary show on October 30th (a Thursday show?)

Speaking of the WWE Tour, Superluchas says WWE Mexico promoters OCESA want to use Dos Caras Jr. for those shows. Seems a bit last minute to happen. CMLL’s probably got him booked for next week!

Luchando Libre posts the TVC Deportes video of the Goddess vs Princesa Sujei finish. I think Goddess was trying for a top rope legdrop, but it’s not very clear. Post match, Goddess says Sujei got lucky and she’s not giving up. This article notes Hiroka, Sujei’s cornerwoman, interfered a lot. The Luchando Libre post notes Hiroka did interfere, but the match was pretty much dominated by Sujei anyway. The Notimex interview with Sujei says they drew 10,000, thus proving Princesa Sujei. People will go to shows if the tickets are 30 pesos, good to know. Sujei hopes to beat more Canadians in her future. (BEWARE, MENTALLO!) I presume Sujei also dislikes hockey, maple surup and The Tragically Hip.

SuperLuchas has more from El Dandy’s meeting with the Box Y Lucha comission; they were originally going to suspend him 3 months from any show in the nation before it got cut down to one month in DF, and that was only because he didn’t attack Demon after he gave him a piledriver. I’m sure they’ll be right on suspended everyone else who’s used a piledriver, and they’re surely not just helping promote a group that has no TV and needs bits like this to remind people they’re around between shows.

Hablando de Catch has photos from the Katharsis lucha libre museum exhbition.

This article about AAA seems to be slightly delusional. It says AAA signed an agreement to send Rey, Eddie and Juvi to WWE, has Vampiro and Cibernetico as new stars and talks about Konnan unable to wrestle after receiving a kidney transplant (well, that one may be close.)

Judging from the preview last week, it looks like the contestants on (US’s) The Amazing Race will be wrestling Boliva’s Cholitas on this Sunday’s episode.

LuchaWorld has Robert on 03/31/06 AAA (the famous show where Kaoma joined the Vipers! also the Air Force debuted) and 04/08/06 CMLL. KrisZ’s news update is also up.

MEDINA (SAT) 10/11 La Plaza de Toros Vicente Segura [LuchandoLibre]
1) Black Thunder, Mohicano I, Mohicano II vs Black Spirit, Metal Boy, Turbo
2) Esther Moreno & Xochitl Hamada vs Flor Metalica & Rossy Moreno
3) Enfermero Jr. & Gran Markus Jr. vs Hijo de Huracan Ramirez & Huracan Ramirez Jr.
4) Antifaz del Norte, Intocable, Rayman vs Head Hunter I, Mascara Ano 2000 Jr., Pentagon Black
5) Mil Mascaras vs LA Park, Rayo de Jalisco Jr., El Hijo del Solitario, Espanto Jr., Pierroth II, Mr. Texas, Angel Blanco Jr. [cage]

Pierroth II hasn’t been wrestling under that name since May and probably doesn’t have authorization to be using it at this point, so he’s the most likely candidate. Mr. Texas doesn’t seem impossible either, but you’d figure he’d lose it in Monterrey.

IWRG SCORPIO (FRI) 10/17 Arena Naucalpan [IWRG]
1) Halcon 2000 vs Avisman
2) Eragon & Miss Gavitoa vs Carta Bravo & King Drako
3) Freelance, Pegasso Xtreme, Rey Cometa vs Oficial 911, Oficial AK47, Oficial Fierro
4) Latino, Multifacético, Super Astro vs Black Terry, Dr. Cerebro, Shu el Guerrero
5) Fuerza Guerrera, LA Park, Máscara Año 2000 vs El Hijo Del Santo, Rayo de Jalisco Jr., Zumbido

This is a Scorpio tribute show, and there will be on more on 10/25 in Xochimilco. They’re moving the show from Thursday to Friday for this show. This will air on TVC Deportes.

This whole El Dandy meeting at the DF Box Y Lucha commission article is fascinating. For one, Fantasma shows up for work as President in overalls? Anyway, for piledriving Blue Demon and not caring, El Dandy is suspended for one month starting yesterday, which would mean he’s back on November 7th. Meanwhile, Blue Demon says the NWA has authorized a NWA Heavyweight match between him and Adam Pearce on November 25, but he’s not yet sure if he’ll be medically cleared. He’s still having issues from the piledriver, so it’ll be up to the doctors. Note that el Dandy will be cleared to wrestle by that date. Dandy continues to believe the presidency of NWA Mexico is on the line in every match Blue Demon wrestles.

Arturo Rivera talks about Antonio Pena.

Someone finally got the most important viewpoint of the Grey Shadow jump: Sangre Azteca explains Grey Shadow was just scared of losing his mask to Sangre. Sangre explains this is not the first time that’s happened to him; Rayman apparently left the company the night he was supposed to fight him for the Occidente Light Heavyweight title (Sangre assures us he had a great match with Terrible instead), and it gives him joy any time one of his rivals is so scared of him that he runs. Sangre says he’ll turn his attention back to La Mascara’s mask.

Lots of photos of Goddess as Aurora in Monterrey, now that they can be officially connected.

Classes at Fabian el Gitano’s gym include tai bo and belly dancing. Of course they do!

4) Princesa Sujei b Goddess [mask]
5) Blue Panther, Dr. Wagner Jr., Héctor Garza DQ Heavy Metal, Mr. Niebla, Negro Casas

Tecnicos took the first fall of the main event, and Niebla fouled Wagner in the second.

Mask match was typical quick quick long. If ESTO is to be believed, Goddess actually knocked herself out on a missed plancha, and that’s how the match ended. What a way to go. Everyone else says it was a Sujei Driver. Goddess gave her name as Aurora Reina, from Vancouver, 4 years a professional wrestler. “Aurora Reina” sounds like a worked name, or at least a better ring name than Goddess. I may be biased towards the first name, I guess. Goddess says she’s not done, and hopes to take Sujei’s mask one day.

Goddess was previously Aurora in LLF.

Nitro replaced Vangelis. Bronco did end up getting Halcon Negro’s spot.

Ovaciones, Reforma, SoloLuchas, ESTO, Deporte1 and Notimex all preview today’s Arena Mexico card with a focus on the hair match. Yay for getting press! It’s a Fan Appreciate 30 pesos to sit anywhere show.

This was asked in the comments over the weekend and I never got to it, so I might as well get to it here – I still think Goddess is losing her mask. CMLL seems to have a core group of women (Amapola, Marcela, Lady Apache, Dark Angel, Princesa Sujei, I’m probably forgetting someone) who can lose to each other but aren’t losing big matches to anyone outside the group. If this was just about establishing Goddess closer to that level, they could’ve had her feud with Rosa Negra or Seductora or another person outside the protected group, same as when India Sioux got her big win over Medussa. Goddess beating Princesa Sujei doesn’t seem plausible as her first big step unless Goddess had been on a metoric rise and impressing everyone, which doesn’t seem the case.

This feud seems to be following the pattern of Amapola & Diana la Cazadora, where Diana didn’t seem to be working out they way they hoped and CMLL just decided to cut their losses by having her lose big on her way out. The victories have been back and forth, but the build in the press has been all lopsided for Sujei, with everyone making it clear that Goddess is not on her level and may be finishing up here. (In ESTO, it reads that Goddess is leaving even if she wins!)

There’s a lot of little reasons. If Sujei’s going to lose, shouldn’t she lose her mask to Dark Angel in a revenge match? The way they keep bringing that up in this feud, I’ve got to figure they’re going back to that at some point. Goddess isn’t going to be hurt as much long term; she’s supposedly nice looking under the mask and she’s probably wrestling unmasked after leaving Mexico anyway.

Of course, this is not too dissimilar to Villano V/Panther (though the press there was a failed attempt at convincing people they were on the same level) or Loco/Tony (except no one cared), and I was the one who thought Sujei was losing her mask a couple months ago. There’s nothing stopping CMLL from doing the wrong finish again. Still, Sujei seems to be as strong a favorite as you’re going to get.

Ultimo Guerrero says he wants Panther’s hair, both Villanos masks and Dr. Wagner’s mask. It’s good to want things. Speaking of high hopes, Villano V wants a mask match with Mistico in late October or early November; no waiting until next year for him.

There’s not a lot else going on here. Niebla/Wagner continues to exist, slightly. We should start a Halcon Negro replacement guessing game. I’m taking Arkangel!

It won’t be Amapola – she underwent knee surgery, and will be out a few weeks.

An article about Sunday’s Arena Coliseo Reynosa show notes the attendence was way down.

AAA’s recap of Sunday’s taping doesn’t have much new, except for an inferiority complex with WWE. In Reforma, it sounds like Romero did tell CMLL he was leaving, though after he no-showed Coliseo and possibly after he debuted. AAA promises another big surprise for this Friday. Perhaps they’ll get around to announcing an actual match for the Pena show?

Another goodbye to El Toreo.

10/03 overnight update

Dos Caras Jr. to WWE

Dos Caras Jr. expects to sign with WWE tomorrow or Saturday, and he’s got no problem ripping CMLL on the way out the door.

If you recall, back when this story first broke, it was right before CMLL announced the CMLL Spain tour. At the time, Dos intimated the news getting out had caused some issues in his relationship Paco Alonso and CMLL Management. Turns out, once CMLL found out Dos was talking with WWE, the relationship was done. Dos stuck around to work out the rest of his contracted dates, but it sounds like there were very hurt feelings on both sides. Dos rips management without really being specific, saying they’re “doing bad things” (poor communication seems to be an issue), blaming CMLL for general discontent with the locker room.

Dos makes it clear that he fully planned on leaving the CMLL Heavyweight Title with CMLL on his way out, because it’s their title. It doesn’t sound CMLL was particularly interested in getting it back, or having him drop it in a title. “CMLL has no rivals for me to defend this belt.” I don’t think he’s saying no one in CMLL is on his level, it’s that CMLL hasn’t had any challenge him.

Dos is looking at doing farewell to Mexico shows in Tijuana and SLP. He’s done in Arena Mexico. No start date for WWE is mentioned, and it’s still impossible to figure.

A couple points to make
– Sicodelico Jr.’s almost positively going to CMLL as well.
– doesn’t sound CMLL made any attempt to keep him
– if CMLL knew Dos was going, why did they give him a spot on the anniversary show? That seems extremely dumb, there surely would’ve been someone else thrilled to have the spot.
– I think the Lizmark/Corelone feud was planned to have a hair match blowoff – it seems headed that way, and it seems like there’s people booking for the own day of the week shows without any knowledge of what else is going with only occasional oversight or communication – but they might as well might that title match then doing a pointless tournament. The belt means zero right now, don’t waste time on deciding a new champ.

Of course, Dos might not be the only done here…

AAA teases a CMLL jump

Just in case they remove it, here’s the poll currently on AAA’s site:

luchalibreaaa.com
luchalibreaaa.com

They’re asking which one of these guys will be the big surprise on AAA’s show this Sunday. They can worm out of it or even just ignore it later, but at the moment, they’re pretty much saying one of these four guys is showing up at the TV taping.

why it won’t be them:
– Tarzan Boy and Shocker are currently independent guys, but both who’ve expressed a strong desire to return to CMLL. Shocker’s said as much in the last week.
– Olimpico and Rey Bucanero are working for CMLL; there’s no telling if they’re actually under a contracted, but they surely have contracted dates.

why it will be them:
– Tarzan’s been on the outside a long time and probably could use the steady employment. Shocker didn’t say he wouldn’t go back to AAA when he asked.
– Rey Bucanero has been the subject of quite a few AAA jump rumors since his tecnico turn
– Olimpico was ticked to be off the anniversary show

where they’re supposed to be on Sunday
– Olimpico is part of a tag tourny in GDL
– Shocker headlines the Scorpio benefit show at Arena Emilano Zapata
– Rey Bucanero wrestled last Sunday, and has no known future matches. Doesn’t mean he’s absolutely not working, just not in a show that’s on our radar. (Odd factoid: he’s only worked Coliseo, Mexico and Puebla this month, so he may not be working small shows.)
– Tarzan works the NWA Mexico show on Saturday, but has nothing for Sunday.

what impact they’d make
– Olimpico: little. Taking Niebla’s role is probably the best to hope for, and can’t imagine him as a tecnico
– Rey Bucanero: moderate, depending on how quick they lose interest
– Tarzan Boy: same – can’t seem to find much to do with Alan Stone, what are they going to do with an older version one the jump wears off?
– Shocker: moderate, because it’d be hard to trust him at this point

If I had to pick any of them, I’d guess Tarzan Boy because he’s probably given up on waiting for CMLL. But, my real pick is none of the above. It might be some other outsider (surprised they didn’t throw in Black Warrior, though a ex-WWE to capitalize on RAW moving in would make more sense), but I think this is mostly done to cause rumors, speculation, and discontent inside of CMLL. It’ll be the buzz of the internet and people will be ticked if it’s not a jump, but this is going be something much more known to people inside the business than the average fan watching AAA when this taping airs next weekend. The speculation isn’t going sell tickets or increase ratings, but it’s going to tick off CMLL and AAA’s always counting that as a win.

This is also a brilliant way to take the spotlight off AAA acknowledging their timeslot is being moved and cut. And this sucks for the guys named who aren’t jumping.

Let’s take a moment to note how hilarious/CMLL-rific it would be for Bucanero to jump, and CMLL to lose it’s Heavyweight and Light Heavyweight champion in one weekend. If I had any faith in NWA Mexico to do better, forget the idea I suggest yesterday afternoon – they should just point out how much a joke titles are in CMLL, how titles go seasons (or years!) without being defending, say they’re not champions worth recognizing, and move on.

CMLL puts date to Goddess/Princesa Sujei mask match

CMLL (TUE) 10/07 Arena Mexico [the Punisher Wagner @ el Martinete]
1) Apocalipsis & Ramstein vs Angel de Oro & Astro Boy
2) Hijo del Faraon, Metálico, Tigre Blanco vs Bronco III, Euforia, Nosferatu
3) Ephesto, Misterioso II, Vangelis vs Hijo del Fantasma, La Máscara, La Sombra
4) Goddess vs Princesa Sujei [mask]
5) Heavy Metal, Mr. Niebla, Negro Casas vs Blue Panther, Dr. Wagner Jr., Héctor Garza

This is CMLL’s first Tuesday show of the month, so it’ll be a discount show. That’s also probably why the mask match is happening this week as well as the other better than usual matches. CMLL determines success by the number of people in Arena Mexico seats; even with as underpaid the guys are, this particular show surely can not be making them money, but if it looks decent for once they’ll probably be happy.

I feel pretty safe picking Sujei. Well, I’d feel pretty safe picking Sujei, because having Goddess beating Sujei would make as much sense as Villano V beating Blue Panther and we sure found that one out.

Regardless, this probably isn’t the losers farewell – Diana la Cazadora worked the next week and twice more after her hair match. Even if Goddess is headed back to Canada, they’ll surely keep her around for a week so everyone can see her unmasked.
