2014 Lucha Libre Win/Loss Records

This is the usual match record listing, much later than usual. I’ve noted previous years results were heavily biased to shows that shows which get a lot of attention (major DF promotions) and had weird quirks where a small promotion could show up a lot if their lineups just happen to be some place I could easily find. It’s 2015, many (but not all) groups are on Facebook and sharing their posters, streamlining the process. For over a year, Kris Zellnar’s been collected posters from everywhere he can find them. I started transcribing them all into the database arond Feburary. It’s so much work, much of it focusing on luchadors I’ve never seen and will never see, and I’m likely to give up doing it at any point, but it’s provided a much larger data set for this time around.

1999 Coahuila/Durango lineups added

I really didn’t expect to have this done so quick (and didn’t really, last week’s post was scheduled in advance.) I did figure out where the Advanced Search and found the date search. It’s a lot of easier to find missing shows when you’re going thru them in order! I probably got all of the 2000 lineups, I’m certain I got all of the 1999 ones. It will be a longer time before I have the 1998 ones (assuming I remember to do them next.)

Since that took less time, I did some other stuff. In addition to the HTML export, I’ve got a text only. The text one has ID codes for the wrestlers I’m tracking inside {} brackets. (The first number is the key for the person, the second is for the identities – Disck Jocker and Cesar Andrade are distinct identities, for instance.) I don’t know if this is helpful for anyone, but it’ll be nice for me when my database inevitably blows up and I try to put it back together.

(year) 2000 Coahuila/Durango lineups added to the luchadb

My latest weird research project was going thru the 2000 archives of El Siglo de Torreon, pulling out all the lucha libre info I could find, and adding them to the database. It’s took well a month or two to transcribe them all, and they were added to the database over the last week. There are 279 events covering Coahuila and Durango for that year now. I believe I only had 1 prior.

If you’re someone running your own wrestling match database or otherwise want this info, the complete list of what I pulled together is here. I don’t know if anyone actually DOES, but I like the idea someone might.

I used the El Siglo de Torreon search, and simply searched for lucha libre. I ran another search for building “Arena Olimpico Laguna” to pick up a couple of stragglers, and it’s possible I missed some other ones. It was a lot of transcribing from newspapers, which means a lot of typos. I’ve cleaned up what I’ve caught but there’s still more in there.

The vast majority of the event records I have are just the lineups. This paper was still publishing all the local lineups up to a couple years ago regularly. Results would still be better, but you can still get a handle of some things.

And, so, some things I figured – which will probably only be interesting to people greatly interested in obscure lucha libre in Durango and Coahuila at a specific time.

The last Dr. Lucha podcast (subscriber only) included a brief musing about how many wrestlers are related to other people in CMLL, sometime frequently talked about. Alfredo turned this to a challenge. I’ve actually done this bit before, but I wanted to have another Monday afternoon post. That’s how the magic trick works.

There are 131 luchadors who’ve had at least one match in Arena Coliseo or Arena Mexico in the last 90 days. Skandalo’s still waiting to get medical cleared after an eye injury but could be back at any point, so let’s call it 132. This is the breakdown

47 are unrelated to any known luchador
12 are related to known luchadors, but they’ve never been in CMLL
20 are related to known luchadors who have been in CMLL at one point, but are not working for the promotion at the moment
29 are related to known luchadors who are in CMLL right now who are unlikely to have influence on the product
24 are related to known luchadors who are in CMLL right now who could have some influence on the product

40.2%  (51) are related to someone else who works in CMLL.
55.3% (72) are related to someone who’s worked in CMLL at some point.
only 30% are unrelated to anyone.

2013 Lucha Libre Win/Loss Records

As always, these records are obtained simply off of publicly available lineup info and records and are pretty wrong. I know I’m missing many, many lineups and more results. This is the best I have, but the totals are greatly influenced by the ease of finding some promotion’s info (CMLL, IWRG) and the difficulty in finding info on other groups (everyone else.) There are an endless amount of small shows which will never be advertised in a place were I can see it; these are not complete, just as accurate as I can make them. The records include matches in Japan which were co-promoted with Mexician promotions, and some shows in Central America just to be random. When it’s really easy to follow a Guatemalan promotion and they use CMLL guys, I include them.

These lists are broken down by affiliation, not by matches in that promotion. For example, the IWRG list includes everyone who stuck in 2013 IWRG long enough for me to consider them a member of the roster (usually just 1 match), but the win/loss/total includes any match that person had anywhere. It’s sorting and not limiting. (I should really do these lists only including CMLL DF and AAA TV at some point.)

I’ve dropped the Arena Afixion and Xalapa sections this year. Aficion (and all Pachuca results, thanks to the tireless work of Funcion Estelar) are still pretty regular but there’s no sign of a set roster (like Monterrey.) Xalapa stopped posted results. I added TxT partly because the last result I put in was their lightly attended taping in Leon, but there’s a lot of cross over with IWRG and the roster data isn’t great. It’s there but I’m mostly ignoring it as a category.

I’m sure more 2013 will turn up, but not much. These results are more likely to change by adding more luchadors to be tracked by name; 1665 luchadors are included this year so far. You can find previous years of this topic under the records tag. I’ve been doing this since 2008; it occurs to me that it wouldn’t be too hard to go backwards and at least post what I have, so maybe that’s a project for later.

The top 4 are the same top 4 from last year, with Maximo moving up from 6th to 5th (and Mephisto dropping down to 16th.) Volador was 7th last year, 8th this one. It’s all CMLL top 10, which is strange, but based on a lot more people in the 150s and 160s. Psycho Clown was 10th last year, had more matches this year (144, most among AAA) and fell to 13th.

I always love these lists for the weird people. Tinieblas is the best luchador in the world by the stats (which don’t include level of competition.) Voltron is an old Guatemalan luchador show who the Arena Guatemala Mexico promotion is built around, Rayo de Oro is the young tecnico who had a long win streak there. Hombre Sin Miedo is just random.

Estrella de Fuego is a Monterrey luchadora. The Flys are indy wrestlers around Mexico City. Jhonky – who I only recently realized wast meant to be pronounced Junkie – is of course a DTU luchador who pops up in Arena Aficion a lot. Baby Star appears to be based in Ciudad Juarez but has been turning up elsewhere, including on Toryumon Mexico shows.

CMLL singles match head to head records

Negro Casas and Atlantis have been together in CMLL for over 20 years, usually on opposite sides and usually around the top of the card. They’ve faced each other in trios matches countless times. It wasn’t until last month that they had their first ever singles match last month in Puebla last month, as best I can figure.

Atlantis hasn’t had singles match with Rey Escorpion, Rush or Terrible. Averno has never faces Valiente. Valiente hasn’t gotten a lot of singles chances. Sombra hasn’t faced Rey Escorpion. La Mascara hasn’t faced Negro Casas. Blue Panther hasn’t faced Mephisto. And on and on.

CMLL is a tag/trios promotion where singles matches are the gimmick match at the end of feuds, and CMLL doesn’t like to overuse gimmick matches. CMLL does not openly promote matches as different weight group, but it typically only does feuds between wrestlers between similar sizes. Luchadors may be in the same promotion but be quietly classified into separate groups. It’s possible to be in the same company a long time without having a singles match. That’s the complete opposite of US promotions and quite different from Japan groups (where the annual league tournaments causes at least the top guys to face off.) The only major group who probably runs less singles matches is AAA, who run a less feuds in number and a lot less shows.

Rob suggested a while back to put together a list of CMLL wrestlers to see how people had done each other against and which matches had actually happened. He suggested to pick 10 names. Somehow, I came up with 22. These things happen.

We’ve seen CMLL change style a little bit in the last few months, and maybe more singles matches are coming. Right now, this is where they’re at:

Records are thru 02/07 and never complete. The U number indicated matches which were announced but no results were ever found. Tournament matches are not included unless they’re finals. Singles matches in any location are included.

My big takeaway is Valiente needs to get a singles title and just start defending it against everyone. He’s had some singles matches, but not many against the top guys included here. I knew Marco had not had a lot of singles matches, but I was surprised to see that for him.

It’s also amazing to realize Rush is 0-3 against Rey Bucanero. One of the teased (but not really delivered) El Luchador storylines was Bucanero trying to hold off the young guys coming after him – young guys like Rush. Guess he did that! Rush really doesn’t have the strong W/L record you’d expect – he’s beaten Terrible a bunch but is 50/50 against everyone else.

It’s worth remembering that these numbers are interesting but totally irrelevant to anything they program or even how they hype the matches they program. I knew Dorada had lost to Volador before their FantasticaMania match, but I didn’t realize he had never beaten Volador until I saw this list. It’s going to be a long time before he gets another chance to get that first W too.
