02/25 (notes): Nino de Acero out, Koslov to ROH, Box y Lucha

Nino de Acero will be out for nine months after fracturing his femur on Monday during a dive, which means he’s back in November if things go well. The surgery took six hours. Lucha Libre is brutal.

SuperLuchas says Alex Koslov is part of the Mexican contigent on the ROH Houston shows. That’ll be great and great for him. I hope he still does the stop sign. It also does open the door to mindblowing AAA/ROH crossovers, which we discussed a bunch on the last podcast.

Sexi Star is on the next AAA Circus Circus show, which would seem to preclude her from being Star Fire. Star Fire hasn’t really turned up much, so I guess it doesn’t really matter.

No Dark Angel or Cassandro on the last set of TNA tapings.

Ovaciones reports Blue Panther, Shocker, Hector Garza, and Black Warrior will receive Golden Microphone awards from the National Association of Broadcasters. They gave awards to Marco & Atlantis last year, so I think they just like giving awards.

The Gladatores also have interviews with Signo and Scorpio Jr. (as FCW Champion)

Box Y Lucha has articles with Perro Aguayo Jr. growning up as the son of Perro Aguayo, Super Crazy heading to Puerto Rico and Martha Villalobos angry at Mr. Mexico using ‘El Rey’ in Arena Queretaro and losing his mask, since she has a wrestler using the same name (if only there was some sort of government sponsored official group in charge of this sort of thing). The real important news is the awesome return of the old Box Y Lucha covers!

I keep forgetting to mention: all the Lucha Listen-Ins are now hosted at archive.org. You can download all four episodes or just get them streamed to you. We also have an iTunes/RSS feed too. Thanks to Tony for getting this all set up.

CMLL (SUN) 01/11 Arena Mexico [Ovaciones, CMLL, WiLlYeR @ elMartinete, cesar @ box y lucha]
1) Pegasso & Rey Cometa b Calígula & Méssala
2) Euforia & Nosferatu b Flash & Stuka Jr.
3) Blue Panther, Mark Corleone, Shocker b Ephesto, Terrible, Texano Jr.
4) Black Warrior, Mr. Niebla, Rey Bucanero b La Sombra, Místico, Volador Jr.
5) Shockercito L Pierrothito, Mascarita Dorada, Último Dragoncito, Pequeño Warrior, Pequeño Universo 2000, Pequeño Olímpico, Tzuki, Nino de Acero, Pequeno Ninja, Fantasy, Electrico, Cosmico [mask, cage]

Wrestlers had to stay in the cage for seven minutes, but all the tecnicos just left at the start of the match to confound the rudos. They were ordered back in the cage, and Dorada and Shockercito ended up doing dives off the top of the cage as their way of getting back in. Pequeno Ninja ended up leaving early again and didn’t seem like he realized it, because the ring announcement to allow escape was just after, but the referees explained it to him and he climbed back in and then climbed back out later.

Order of escape went Cosmico, Electrico, Fantasy, Pequeno Ninja, Tzuki, Pequeno Olimpico, Pequeno Universo 2000, Pequeno Black Warrior. This left it 3 tecnicos (Dragoncito, Dorada, Shockercito) vs Pierrothito. Dragoncito took off and escaped, and Shockercito seemed to be next, but Dorada did a “spectacular” series of moves to escape before Shockercito, leaving him with Pierrothito. Those two wrestled to a fall, and Pierrothito made Shockercito give up to a bridging reverse facelock. Shockercito is Javier Cortes Sanchez from Villanueva, Oaxaca, 8 years a professional wrestler (so he’d wrestled a little over a year before taking this gimmick.)

Shockercito unmasked photos: CMLL, box y lucha. This match seemed to be on track for 52MX, but CMLL.com’s preview of the show says “EVENTO GRABADO PARA LA TV POR TELEVISA CANAL 9 GALAVISIÓN”, so perhaps it WILL be on the main show? Maybe they can save the tape for the next time they plan on running a notPPV.

Warrior blatantly foul kicked Mistico, but got away with for the semimain win. They have a singles match next Sunday.

CMLL.com’s recap mentions Euforia and Nosferatu’s win may have set them up for a third shot at the tag team titles. Attendance is said to be good – maybe 75%?

CMLL (SUN) 01/11 Arena Coliseo Guadalajara [MT]
4) Mascara Dorada b Dragon Rojo Jr.
5) Héctor Garza, Hijo del Fantasma, La Máscara b Atlantis, Negro Casas, Último Guerrero

Garza pinned UG clean in a third, then demanded (and received) a trios title shot for next Sunday. Dorada pulled Rojo’s mask before pinning him for the semifinal win.

Dos Jr. is still listed as working tomorrow in Arena Mexico. We’ll see!

In Monterrey, Caifan is hurt again. This time, it’s an abdominal injury, which will require three months of rest. He’s had nothing but bad luck the last year.

Box Y Lucha #2905 has Mistico conquering Japan and Chessman explaining his first wrestling payday was a chicken pie. Article teasers include Bam Bam responding to Freelance, Super Fly saying the only real Fuerza Aerea, Hector Garza saying he’s not copying Alex Koslov and memories of Aguila India.

SuperLuchas looks back at Silver King’s past failures and success in Tijuana.

WrestlingObserver posted their AAA recap

2) Black Fenix, Power Ranger I, Street Boy vs Black Mamba, Oscuridad, Violento
3) Principe Diamante, Sangre Chicana, Universal vs Hombre de Negro, Kendor, Soberdosis
4) Estrella Universal, Hombre Sin Miedo, Laredo Kid vs Rio Bravo, Tigre Cota, Tito Santana II

Or, you know, they’re not taking two months of here.

12/23: Minis Cage Match, Poder Mexica

CMLL held a newsworthy press conference today. There will probably be a few more background quotes in the days to come, but it seems worthwhile to focus on the news items tonight.

The next Sunday special show at Arena Mexico will be 01/11 and be called La Hora Cero. As a special main event, and working off feuding in recent minis matches on Sunday, there will be the first CMLL Cage Match of Mini Estrellas. The loser will lose their mask. Panico was not definite on a lineup, but Pierrothito, Mini Universo 2000 and Mascarita Dorada talked at the press conference and are in for sure. CMLL.com adds Shockercito, Mini Olimpico, Pequeno Ninja, Pequeno Warrior and Acero de Oro, which makes 8. 8 is about normal for this sort of cage match, but it’s minis so who’s to say what normal is. I can’t think of any more mini rudos who still have their mask, though.

This, in fact, would probably be the main event minis match I was talking about on Sunday. Who could’ve known. Women keep on waiting.

In more ticket selling news, CMLL officially announced Guadalajara’s First Sunday Of The Month discounted ticket deal and mentioned Arena Puebla would be doing the same thing on the First Monday of the month.

The other news was Sangre Azteca delivering on his idea of forming a group. It’s called Poder Mexica, and it’ll be Sangre Azteca, Black Warrior and Dragon Rojo Jr.

“Poder Mexica” translated to Mexico Power. Sound familiar? (Besides the ex-Boricua guy!) I’m going with the idea that this is CMLL/Sangre being completely unaware of what AAA is doing than a purposeful rip. Either way is very silly, but Sangre Azteca’s been promoting that name since he left the Guerreros so we’re likely stuck with it. (And we’re surely getting the Mexican Powers back in force in AAA just so they can prove they were there first.)

If you check out Sangre’s website, you’ll notice that it’s actually open and it already has a link for this group. I wonder if the website was done before the announcement of the group was ready.

I like the makeup of the group. They’re not three similar guys, really three guys at very different career points, but three guys who’s strengths and weaknesses balance out pretty well. My concern is how they fit in the greater rudo sphere:

Current Rudo Factions
Pesta Negra: Negro Casas, Felino, Heavy Metal, Mr. Niebla
Guerreros de la Atlantida: Atlantis, Ultimo Guerrero, Rey Bucanero
Villanos: Villano III, Villano IV, Villano V
Hijos del Averno: Averno, Mephisto, Ephesto, Texano Jr., Terrible
Poder Mexica: Sangre Azteca, Black Warrior, Dragon Rojo Jr.
Infernales: Satanico, Euforia, Nosferatu
Tuareg: Nitro, Dr. X, Loco Max, Skandalo, Hooligan, Arkangel

7! We may be overpopulated here. I mean, it’s easier to write the list of notable people who are not in groups.

* Lizmark Jr. (who’d be in one of he was around long enough)
* Virus (who is essentially the fourth Infernal)
* Okumura (who is foreign and therefore doesn’t count – hey, I didn’t make up the rules)
* Vangelis (who no one would want in their group)
* Misterioso II

Alex is right! Anyway, I know this is for sure different, I just don’t know if it’s good or bad. I would think forming a 7th group wouldn’t be a good idea if you have six other ones, but at least this one seems to have some thought behind it.

At the same time, there’s zero tecnico groups. There’s Garza’s thing where no one knew who was in it and no one remembered it a week later. There’s Mistico’s idea for a group (and it’s funny to think Sangre Azteca has enough pull to form a group but Mistico does not), but there’s an obvious disinterest for tecnico groups by CMLL programmers. There’s no other obvious reason it’d be so lopsided. This whole format reminds move of a Japanese setup, where you various heel groups and one company tecnico army led by the company ace to fight them. The difference is those groupings are usually tightly adhered to, while it’s an exception for a tercera or higher rudo side to be completely members of one group or another. Maybe that’ll change – they seem to be going this way with keeping the Hijos del Averno together.

Getting back to Sangre Azteca – the idea of the guy who probably would’ve won ‘most underutilized’ multiple times if I was doing these awards in the late 90s and early 00s now leading an important faction (not La Alianaza) is pretty cool.

08/02 IWRG Lineup

IWRG (THU) 08/02 Arena Naucalapn
1) Mr. Randal vs Golem
2) Halcon Salvaje & Samba vs Macho II & Puma King
3) Freelance, Kid Tiger, Marco Rivera vs 911, AK47, Fierro
4) Astro Boy, Ultraman Jr., Veneno vs Black Terry, Kai, Yamato
5) Cerebro Negro, Dr. Wagner Jr., Hijo del Anibal vs Black Warrior, Hijo de Cien Caras, Mascara Ano 2000 Jr.

HE LIVES! I didn’t think it’d take two months for Jesus to rise again.

Black Warrior has been released from CMLL

This news is originally from Mexician newspaper Diaro Record. It’s been reposted by here (WAGNER_DRIVER @ box y lucha), and also by KrisZ. The newspaper does not have a website.

Box Y Lucha foreshadowed in this week’s magazine, so point for them.

Six no shows are cited – checking my notes, that should be…

06/10 Monclova
06/12 Coliseo DF
06/16 Neza
06/17 Coacalco
06/18 Puebla
06/19 Coliseo DF
06/24 Guadalajara

Which is not 6, but close enough. They did have new lineups with Warrior off the GDL card. It’s really not the number, but the complete disappearing act.

I have no idea if this is a jump to AAA (a confirmed TripleMania card might clarify), or if there’s personal issues going on here. I’m guessing CMLL has not heard from Black Warrior, or has just very much not liked what they’ve heard.

Warrior is a much better position to jump groups since losing his mask. He’d lose his name, but he’d be able to keep his look.

06/25: Coliseo, Tijuana, Warped Tour, magazines

CMLL (SUN) 06/24 Arena Coliseo [ovaciones]
1) Rayo Tapatío I & Rayo Tapatío II b Calígula & Zayco
2) Mr. Aguilita, Pequeño Damian 666, Pequeño Halloween b Bam Bam, Pequeño Olímpico, Último Dragoncito
3) Hirooki Goto, Ohara, Shigeo Okumura b Leono, Stuka Jr., Valiente
4) Damián 666, Halloween, Mr. Águila b Heavy Metal, Máximo, Sombra
5) Tozcano, Último Guerrero, Universo 2000 b Dos Caras Jr., Marco Corelone, Rey Bucanero

Dos Caras hurt his knee on a dive in the second fall, but managed to continue. For that, he was fouled and pinned by Universo. Some sort of rematch will be added for this week, but nothing’s been announced. Didn’t sound like a title match quite yet, but it could be a singles.

Sombra replaced Mascara Purpura and his side lost in two falls. Stuka replaced Mictlan.

This is the card so far for Sunday

CMLL (SUN) 07/01 Arena Coliseo
1) Astro Boy & Trueno vs Carrona & Zayco
2) Bam Bam, Shockercito, Tzuki vs Mr. Aguilita, Pequeno Damian, Pequeno Halloween
3) Felino, La Mascara, Valiente vs Euforia, Nosferatu, Satanico
4) Alex Koslov, Heavy Metal, Volador Jr. vs Atlantis, Olimpico, Sangre Azteca

Robert’s reading much more into Valiente and Euforia being in the same match than I am. Tercera is about Valiente’s position right now, I think this was just the usual random match generator.

BAJA (FRI) 06/22 Auditorio de Tijuana [culotron @ DVDMB]
1) Black Spider, El Camaleon, Extassis, Star Boy b Cepillo, Escorpion, Libelula, Pandillero I
2) Alberije, Estrellita, Pimpinela Escarlata b Miss Janeth, Monsther, Polvo de Esterllas
3) Escoria, Espíritu, Muerte Cibernetica b Abismo Negro, Charly Manson, Histeria
4) Sangre Chicana L Tinieblas Jr., Tinieblas Sr., Pirata Morgan, Fuerza Guerrera, Espectro Jr. [hair]

CMLL (SUN) 06/24 Auditorio Nacional [Notimex]
1) La Sombra & Valiente ?? Arkangel de la Muerte & Virus
2) Lady Apache & Marcela b Hiroka & Mima Shimoda
3) Mano Negra, Matematico I, Solar I b Black Terry, Gallo Tapatio Jr., Negro Navarro
4) Marco Corelone, Rayo de Jalisco Jr., Rey Bucanero DQ Blue Demon Jr., LA Park, Último Guerrero

This was part of a Lourdes Grodet photo exhibition. Of course, can’t have a clean finish here – Ultimo yanked Rayo’s mask.

CMLL (MON) 06/25 Arena Puebla [hugo999]
1) Forajido & King Jaguar vs Mr. Rafaga & Siki Osama Jr.
2) Black Terry, Fuerza Chicana, Kraken vs Batman, SWAT, the Tiger
3) Goto, Ohara, Okumura vs Felino, Mascara Purpura, Mictlan
4) La Mascara, La Sombra, Sagrado vs Averno, Mephisto, Sangre Azteca
5) Atlantis, Lizmark Jr., Olimpico vs Negro Casas, Shocker, Volador Jr.

indy (THU) 06/28 Arena Olimpico Laguna de Gomez Palacio [El Siglo de Torreon]
1) Cadete de la Atlantida & Rey Fobia vs Fuego & Zaracatan
2) Espacial & Insolito vs Moro Jr. & Venum
3) Piloto Suicida, Sexy Libra, Sexy Piscis vs Dulce Paola, Piloto Negro, Sexy Rubi
4) Huracan Ramirez Jr. & Sangre Chicana Jr. vs Espanto V & Pentagon

CMLL (FRI) 06/29 Plaza de Toros Joan Sebastian [box y lucha]
1) Arkano, Estruendo, Okawa vs Emperador, Flecha, Rey Lobo
2) India Sioux & Princesa Blanca vs Rosa Negra & Seductora
3) Felino, Maximo, Sagrado vs Arkangel, Dr. X, Misterioso II
4) Alex Koslov, Mistico, Rey Bucanero vs Mr. Aguila, Tarzan Boy, Ultimo Guerrero

This is a 9 PM start, so they could stretch it to go long regardless. Still, if Mistico & UG have to be in Mexico State later in the night, does that affect how long they’ll be in Arena Mexico?

The press release about AAA working the Warped Tour is here. Same lineup as previously noted (Angel, Psicosis, Decnis – which frees up the spot for Alfa on the atomico team, Mini Charly – I wonder if he’ll meet Other Mini Charly?, Mini Chessman, Super AAA, Piero as ref and it sounds like Dorian Roldan as management.) There’s a couple of lines that boggle my mind, though.

For over 14 years AAA has been the premier wrestling league in Mexico, and enjoys a near 80% share of ticket sales domestically.

“80% of tickets sold?” Where did that number come from?

Antena3 writes about Santo and Scorpio Jr. in Madrid.

Misterioso, Cassandro and Mascarita Sagrada were among luchadores at a show in Salt Lake City Tribune.

Magazines
Super Luchas #218 has Cibernetico and Latin Lover about to shake hands
Luchas 2000 #374 has Cibernetico and Latin Lover shaking hands
Box Y Lucha #2824 has neither Cibernetico nor Latin Lover, but the teased departures mentioned previously. I believe they’re just teases at this point, as if either guy could show up at the other side’s next big show, or not at all. Still not sure what Warrior’s deal is (I’m guessing money, as other people take his spot vs Mistico), but Intocable’s problem seems to be the continued Latin Lover vs Other Dancing Gimmicks deal.
