voting for the 2017 Tapatia awards is now open

This is the seventh Tapatia awards, designed to honor the best in lucha libre over the past year. We encourage all fans to vote, and let their voice be heard on the previous twelve months of Mexican lucha libre. This voting covers the calendar year 2017. Matches are eligible if they were TAPED in 2017 – or if it’s weird Lucha Underground and didn’t air until 2017.

Any match in any location using the Mexican lucha libre style are eligible to be included. Shows in the US and elsewhere using this style are included. Japanese lucha libre promotions such as Dragon Gate are not included, but Japanese tours by Mexican lucha libre promotions are included. Female and mini wrestlers are eligible for all categories, unless otherwise specified.

If you are reading this post, you have qualified to vote. Congratulations! Voting will be open until January 28th unless someone convinces me to leave it open even later.

You can click here to vote, or do it below.

2008 Tapatia Awards Results

Hi!

These are the results for 2008 Tapatia Awards. Thanks to everyone who voted, and thanks for those who didn’t for reading this. We had 24 voters this year, a substantial increase over last year.

After last year’s ballot tended more towards AAA voting for the first time, this year snapped back towards CMLL voting. 6 of the categories were won by CMLL related candidates and 3 by AAA. For the first time in the five year history of these awards, 1 category was won by a non Big 2 candidate, as the Oficials ran away with Best Unit.

2008 will be remembered as the year of Blue Panther vs Villano V; it took three different awards and a second in another category. Other trends include Mistico continuing his domination of Best Tecnico while Best Rudo has a fifth different winner in as many years.

Comments included in the ballots are listed after each award. If I missed yours, or if you have more to say after seeing who won, feel free to post in the comments.

2008 Tapatia Award Thoughts

– If you’re looking for exact match dates, or ones you might have missed, check out the lists on the luchawiki and on DVDVR.

– For the purpose of voting, you can treat CMLL Puebla (and CMLL Guadalajara) as a different promotion/territory than CMLL DF.

– I totally want to encourage discussion of the awards before they’re voted on, I’m just not sure how. Maybe this post is enough, maybe I need something stick-ied? Let me know.

– If you care enough about lucha libre to fill out a ballot and send it to me, I am perfectly fine with you doing so. There is no eligibility exam or entrance requirement; if you care enough to vote, that’s good enough.

I’m not just doing a click poll because writing the picks in an e-mail forces a little more effort and a little more thought, but don’t over think it.

2007 Tapatia Awards Results

Hi!

These are the results for 2007 Tapatia Awards. Thanks to everyone who voted, and thanks for those who didn’t for reading this. Voting was up 8% this year! (That’s 1 voter.)

2007’s results were dominated by the Apache/Billy Boy soap opera. Elements of the feud received votes in many different categories, and surely had an affect on the closest race for best promotion of the year. This is part of the continuing trend away from heavy-CMLL ballots in the first couple of years.

Comments included in the ballots are listed after each award. If I missed yours, or if you have more to say after seeing who won, feel free to post in the comments
