Welcome To The Show Vignette: Rayo de Jalisco

Vignette: Universo is so uptight about the mask/mask match with Rayo, he kinda throws Rey out of the locker room. Rey and Ultimo discuss going to lunch instead. (I might totally have missed the point here.)

Match 1: Universo 2000, Ultimo Guerrero, Rey Bucanero vs Rayo de Jalisco, Super Porky, tecnico, tecnico in a special match declaration
Arena Mexico, 08/06/04

  1. tecnicos
  2. tecnicos

Winner: Tecnicos
Match Time: 6:17
Approx Rating: 75

Other Match Notes: Did someone break the ring announcers microphone? It sounds awful muddy. So, Rayo enters and he's half way down the aisle and I'm waiting for the prematch attack and I know you are too, when all the sudden, someone yells to cut off the music! Ah, it's Vampiro, who's on this show more often with a broken leg than when he was healthy. No idea where he came from. He's walking with a crutch, but he's not really using it. Anyway, he wants Niebla, which is sorta tough since he's not in this match. Maybe that's why he's not in this match? While Porky dances, Vampiro uses the crutch on Rayo, who sells in bits and pieces. Porky seems to notice, but not enough to break up the strip dancing.  Oh wait, now he's figured it out, while Universo is killing Rayo with the crutch. Porky sees the beatdown happening, rushes to the ring (try to imagine) and gets a double clothesline. Warrior doesn't even wait for his music to show up, but gets a double drop toe hold.

So, the first fall has started, but Universo is still beating Rayo with the crutch in the ring. Vampiro is watching from the apron as the other two tecnicos are taken care of on the stage. GdI come in the ring to help beat up Rayo, and Vampiro ends up monetary cornered by Porky. Ultimo helps him out, and the two extra tecnicos are rammed into each other. I think Universo broke the crutch in half while beating Rayo. As Vampiro is order to leave, and takes his time leaving (teasing slapping hands on the way out but pulling back), Universo works over Rayo's mask. Black Warrior follows after Vampiro, but Vampiro uses ring personnel as human shields, and Rey comes over to help him out. After Bucanero has rammed Warrior into the steps, Vampiro comes back to do it himself, and shove some security on his way out. Bizarre time for a break, so why not.

Checking back, around 1:48, it looked like the referees were waving off the fall, though it wasn't clear who it was for; later graphics show Rayo's team took the fall, and I presume it was a DQ of some kind.

Beatdown is still on as we come back, with the ring girl just now coming out for the second fall card, even though Warrior's made it all the way back down the stage and is conversing with Porky. Elsewhere, Ultimo holds Rayo in a choke for Universo to hit. Warrior and Rye are in the ring, Rey holding Warrior in place for quite some time, then throwing him out of the ring when Universo brings in Rayo. Big boot for Rayo, and Rey mocks his chants. Warrior and Warrior yell at the refs from the outside, but don't do much as Rey and Ultimo hold down Rayo in position for Universo to beat. When they do make a charge, they're quickly subdued. Here's the whip that'll turn it around. Yep, double clothesline misses, slap to the Universo's back. Comeback on. Rayo uses the small step on Universo, but I guess it's legal outside the ring? I guess. Beatdown is exciting enough for a long look at the front row. Rayo and Universo back in the ring, with Rayo giving Universo a backdrop and a legdrop. Rayo tells the fans what's next - mask rippin' time. He doesn't actually get much, so he lets up to slap Rayo. Whip, kneelift takes Universo out, and Rayo goes out after him to stomp and post him. Ultimo and Porky in now. Charge, Ultimo catches Porky in a rock bottom setup, Porky evades a hipblock takeover, and pulls of the headlock/headscissors double move on Ultimo and Rey. Ultimo and Rey rally with a chop and double whip, but a double drop down is ill-advised; Rey completely sells out his partner by moving out of the way and not letting Ultimo know. Porky poses, and Rey's lack of death allows him to break it up with a kick. Rey takes his turn to pose, on the ropes, but Warrior's still standing and happy to dropkick him out. Porky does the tope fake to set up WARRIOR TOPE on Rey, driving him thru row 1 and hard into row 2. Porky scares the living daylights out of me by trying a somersault bodyblock apron dive; he pulls it off quite well, actually. That leaves Rayo (rallying the crowd) and Universo (spooked by the crowd) left standing and in the ring. Each man charges, and Rayo goes over the top with backdrop. Universo senton one two NO. Universo slap, slap, corner whip, corner clothesline, corner whip, corner clothesline reversed into a crucifix (Rayo using his size rather nicely to yank Universo into the hold) one two THREE (4:29) That's a two fall win. Post match, Rayo asks the fans if he's going to win the mask/mask match - they seem to think so, though Universo disagrees. Replays of the tope.

Vignette: Mascara Sagrada - the original, the unique - is coming to Arena Mexico next week!

Stellar Moments - El Hijo del Brazo de Plata loves the frog splash. Chris Stone walks the ropes and jumps off with an armdrag, before hitting a (slow motion) tope on Nitro. Elsewhere, Tigre Blanco hooks up a inverted figure four armbar type move on Mr. Mexico. Super Comando gets tossed into a huge Thesz Press to the outside, and Neutron has another great ringpost moonsault. Alan Stone with a double jump in-ring moonsault onto Dr. X. Warrior's tope on Averno last week.

You know, last week (and maybe the week before), they were only giving us one live action shot of the moments, as opposed to the usual move/replay of the move. This time, they're still showing each move once, but they're at least using the slow motion of the move where appropriate

Vignette: Hector Garza and Perro Aguayo, being new and having no evil chit-chat spot like the GdI's stairwell or the Capos dark basement (or the Taliban's parking lot, now that I think about it), hang out in the ring to talk about Perro's smashing performance last week. This is split screened with relevant clips. Perro thinks Perro Sr. was the best. I think Garza would've kept the trophy - it'd have his name on it! - but is totally behind Perro Jr. in whatever mayhem he wants to do. However, Garza notes they've got 3 to deal with - Santo, Casas, and Atlantis, and they're only two northerners (the region was also noted in the lead in; Garza's from Monterrey, Perro was born in Mexico City but I'd guess calls his father's state Zacatecas home - but this could all be an AAA reference going over my head). Perro's got that handled - he's recruited Tarzan Boy (also Monterrey) for this match. Perro's only concerned with one thing; winning this match. Garza sounds like he may be concerned with the same cafe Rey was, but more with winning this match.

Match 2: Perro Aguayo Jr. (c), Tarzan Boy, Hector Garza vs el Hijo del Santo (c), Atlantis, Negro Casas
Arena Mexico, 08/06/04

  1. rudos
  2. tecnicos
  3. rudos

Winner: Rudos
Match Time: 10:27
Approx Rating: 86

Other Match Notes: Perro's still with his WWA Tag Team belt. Thing I've noticed but failed to point out so far: the blue Galavision logo icon in the bottom right hand corner hand been completely obscuring the Televisa logo for about the last two months (obscuring the logo was surely the point, but it was big enough it obscured other things as well), but it's now been scaled down so the Televisa logo is clearly visible but the Televisa letting underneath is still hidden. Santo shouldn't have come out first because they're so obviously going to punk him and it's going to be a half minute before he gets help. I'm right about him getting punked, but surprised on how fast - Perro hid on the stage, waiting for Santo to come down the stairs, and attacked him right there. Santo gets pushed off the ramp, but gets one foot caught on the stage and part of him caught in a seat; security has to come over, get Perro away and entangle him before he gets really hurt. It kinda takes the steam out of the punk out, but they get things going on the other two instead.

Santo getting tangled actually turns out to help the beatdown, as the rudos quickly decimate the other two tecnicos, and Santo has no help when he's free. Tarzan and Garza hold Santo for Perro to kick, but he really wants to rip apart the mask. Casas tries to help out, but Tarzan stops him. While the beatdown is going and the other rudos are preventing Santo from getting help, we flash back to last week and Perro breaking the plaque. Santo managed to get a split second comeback, but Perro pounded him back into submission. Garza holds Santo in a full nelson for Perro to kick, and then Perro brings Santo out to the front row for more beating. Perro glares at the crowd, and kicks Santo down as he tries to sit up. Crowd chants for Santo regardless. Santo's brought in, where Atlantis and Negro have just been disposed off. Everyone takes turn getting shots while Perro poses. Santo's gets a double whip, ducks the clothesline, double clothesline on Hector and Tarzan. The comeback would seem to be on, yet while Negro and Atlantis storm the ring to take care of the other two, Perro manages to boot Santo down and rains more punches on him. They end up going outside, as do Tarzan and Negro. Inside, Atlantis' beating on Hector is suddenly stopped with a questionably low punch for Perro that he gets away with. Perro's domination of Santo allows him a moment to help Tarzan turn the tide, and all of the sudden, the heels have stopped the wave. I don't know how (if?) I've seen rudos stop an organized comeback before, but it's a nice twist on the usual formula. Atlantis is taken in the ring and beaten 2 on 1 (Tarzan watching from the apron for whatever reason.) Aguayo slams him, and Garza carefully goes to the top - Tornillo! One two three. (4:18) Santo comes back in and Perro pounds him to the mat, seeking a pin the referees refuse to count for whatever reason. By my count, we're still short one guy getting pinned, so maybe Santo's shoulder isn't really down or something. At any rate, Tarzan and Garza give Santo a double spinebuster, Perro adds the taunt, and plants a boot on him to cover, one two three. (4:51) Replays.

Beatdown continues for fall two. Tarzan still has not taken off his shirt. It's not like I need to look at his bas, it's just very odd. Must've not gotten to the gym enough for his liking. Garza and Tarzan take over the tecnicos who try and storm the ring while Perro beats up Santo and poses. Santo tries to make a rush on the ring, and is stopped. Perro holds Santo for a double clothesline, Santo ducks, Perro gets it - this time? Tarzan and Garza charge Santo with a double clothesline, Santo charges towards them, stops and backs up (Tarzan and Hector are confused), starts again , ducks the clothesline and topes Perro! I think Perro wasn't turned around in time, so we got the hitch. Before we even can glance away from that carnage, Atlantis has Garza wrapped in a bodyscissors cradle for three (2:00) and Negro is finishing off Terrible with a sharpshooter (2:03) That was rather quick. Fight goes on despite the end of the fall, with Santo stomping Perro's face on the outside and throwing him into yet-to-be-cleared seats (which gets the refs ticked at him.) The other four battle out onto the ramp, Hector taking an Atlantis bodyslam on them and Negro trying out leg submissions on Tarzan. Garza takes a monkey flip too. The referees get Perro and Santo to battle in the ring (better to avoid lawsuits), but Perro chickens out for the break. Replays as it gets settled down.

Tarzan and Casas are in the ring to start the third fall, and now Tarzan will take off his shirt. He looks 75% of usual, which is still much better than you or me. Muscle pose. Test of strength armlock - no, Casas kicks, twists Tarzan down, flexes biceps himself, and stomps Tarzan. Crowd shot means we're skipping this exchange, right to Santo/Perro instead. We do get to see Perro thinking about walking out, which is a vital part of the story but still kinda annoying in the "10 seconds of non-action  out right after a clip" sense. Perro comes in, exciting, and sidesteps a Santo dropkick before once again going to town on him with kicks and punches. Whip, head own waaay too soon, and Santo gives him a big kneelift. Another big kneelift. Santo realizes Perro has no mask to rip, so he tries to rip the hair instead. Rudos save Perro, tecnicos (well, Negro - what'cha doing, Atlantis?) save Santo, but the rudos win the numbers game, dropping the non-Santos to the floor so they can beat Santo in the mat some more. Mostly, it's Perro beating up Santo and the other watching, and Perro eventually takes both of them out of the ring with a dropkick. Back to Negro and Tarzan, who have a strike battle.  Negro's losing, so he goes to kicks and wins. Corner whip, reversed, Tarzan charges in, Negro moves, and Tarzan takes the corner hamstring bump on to his feet. Negro dropkicks Tarzan to the floor, then ducks a Garza clothesline and holds him in a front facelock. Garza is able to use the front facelock to lift Negro over the ropes on and on to the apron, but Garza's attempt to run Negro into the post leads to Negro's Thesz press apron dive on Tarzan instead. Atlantis clotheslines Garza off, and TOPE on him as well. Back to the captains, and Perro's looking spooked himself. Perro charges into a backdrop, and Santo quickly goes to the rope for an in-ring tope to Perro. EL CABALLO - no, Perro slips out the back, Baby Richards slips trying to turn around, and Perro gets in a low blow kick from behind. Big cover, one two three. (3:33) Perro is THRILLED to have proved his point. Garza carries him around the ring on his shoulders! Santo is till down from the low blow the whole time. Perro gets the microphone and yells at Santo while he's been tended to - today, right here, he's proved the Aguayos (and particularly Perro Jr.) are greater than the Santos (and particularly Santo Jr.) The true legend of lucha libre is Perro Aguayo, and he wants a mask/hair match to see it. Perro's going to destroy the legend and the mask of Santo.

Next Week: El Hijo del Santo, Rayo de Jalisco, LA Park, Mascara Sagrada, Shocker, Tarzan Boy, Hijo del Perro Agauyo, Vampiro, Universo 2000, Hector Garza and many more.

Back for replays of the finish, including multiple angles of Baby Richards' slip and the low blow kick. Show's over at under 60 minutes.
