if I'm going to see Metalico's finish every week, I might as well gif it once. Needs a name.

Astro Boy, Fuego, Metálico vs Disturbio, Puma King, Tiger Kid: First fall finish should’ve just come with a blinking “Cats and Fuego are going to have a big match soon”; they don’t go out of their way to do a mask pull DQ in a first fall of a segunda unless they’re up to something.

Hijo del Fantasma, Rush, Toscano vs Atlantis, Mephisto, Shigeo Okumura: originally supposed to be Averno, Mephisto and Lyger on the rudo side, which would’ve at least been interesting. There was actually about 20 seconds here where Rush & Toscano were an entertaining team, 20 seconds more than usual for either of them.

fear the power of Monito

Fuego, Stuka Jr., Valiente vs Misterioso II, Shigeo Okumura, Yoshihashi: Yoshihashi’s best match ever? He was knocked over by Monito’s plancha, that may have been his CMLL high point so far. I understand there are certain legal problems by naming a guy Flash and having him wear variations of the comic book character, but Fuego’s gear is bad and his mask is bad and it’s been a pretty lost year since making the switch.

Felino, Negro Casas, Rey Bucanero vs Charly Manson, Héctor Garza, Mr. Águila: The parts my local LATV affilate could bother to air were okay, better than the last few variations of this match. I wonder if the hair match will end being shown on LATV, since it seems like all these trios matches being included.

this could've been the finish, for all times

Mascarita Sagrada 2007, Mini Charly Manson, Octagoncito vs Mini Abismo Negro, Mini Histeria, Mini Psicosis: This was a fun minis match, as they usually are, and didn’t get much time, like it usually doesn’t. I still don’t understand the story of Abismo thinking he’s the only guy in his group who can be champion when he just lost to Octagoncito, except if maybe Abismo believe such a thing in a real life.

Mari Apache vs Sexy Star for the AAA’s Reina de Reinas match: They didn’t leave any out here for Sexi Star. She lost and she got pretty well killed once Mari broke free of the double team. Sexi’s offense was really basic and not very interesting when she was in charge, and I don’t think I’m going to miss her singles matches. Wonder if there’s a plan for this title next.

Aerostar, Laredo Kid, Súper Fly vs Chris Stone, Decnnis, Tigre Cota: A good match! Rudos are already coming together nicely, though everyone in this match has worked with everyone on the other side for years now. Poor Super Fly, so desperate to turn rudo if only someone would just ask him.

Heavy Metal, Joe Lider, Nicho el Millionario vs Damián 666, Electroshock, Halloween in a street fight match: Heavy Metal & Electroshock have already progressed from hitting each other hard in the head with solid objects to needing a powerbomb onto chairs objects after that to the end the match. I believe they’ll be knife fighting by Decemember.

Cibernético, El Mesías, La Parka Jr. vs el Hijo del Perro Aguayo, Hernandez, Zorro: Someone had to be in the wrong place or around at the wrong time at the end of this match, because Mesias and Perro just stopped fighting and walked off to clear room for the finish. That was all sorts of silly.

Metálico, Molotov, Sensei vs Durango Kid, Escorpion, Inquisidor: Escorpion was the best rudo here, which probably isn’t as surprising as I thought. He still feels a bit more like an AAA guy – reacting to what the tecnico just did instead of just clearing out for the next rudo to take offense – but different is good. If I was booking CMLL, we’d have a Durango Kid vs Sensei martial arts death feud, so be thankful I’m not.

Mascarita Dorada, Shockercito, Último Dragoncito vs Pequeño Black Warrior, Pequeño Nitro, Pierrothito: Really good, exactly what you’d expect from these guys. We learned that Dorada does not need to pants to beat you, but Warrior is better off without a skirt. There really can not be enough minis matches, given how many good guys they have. How would that same chart I did for the women look like for the minis?

[Ages in ()]

rudos tecnicos
Pierrothito (43) Mascarita Dorada (28)
Pequeño Warrior (40) Bam Bam (25)
Pequeño Violencia (42) Último Dragoncito (38)
Pequeño Olímpico? (44) Shockercito (29)
                           Tzuki (36)
----------------------------------------------
Pequeño Nitro? (27?) Electrico (24)
?Cisne? (????) Fantasy (21)
                           Astral (21)
                           ?Aereo? (?)
                           Pequeño Halcón? (?)
-----------------------------------------
Pequeño Universo 2000 (31) Mini Maximo (20)
Bracito de Oro (45)

Nine guys above the “really good” line means there’s always going to be someone fun in a minis match and probably a few.

Olimpico’s turn makes sense in this context. They’re really tecnico heavy, even with Tzuki and Mini Maximo not in the ring a lot. Still would’ve prefered them to fix the problem by stealing Mini Halloween and Mr. Aguilita back. Not just because they’re fun, but that rudo side is old. They can still go, but at some point they won’t be able to and now’s a good time to add some younger people. Pequeno Nitro seems to be coming along fine, he just needs a few partners.

Also, it’s freaky how long Fantasy has been around given he’s only 21. The guy still has a lot of time.

CMLL on Televisa #994 (09/18/2010)

taped 09/17/10 in Arena Mexico

Women’s trios was fun. Ayumi has totally different offense than everyone else is using here, and I wish she was around for more than a week to see more of it.

this followed a half minute of both guys acting exhausted

Invasors/Pesta Negra sounds more interesting on paper than it ever seem to be in the ring. The two concepts don’t work well together – Invasors are supposed to be totally serious, and Pesta Negra is totally the other way. Only Hector has seemed to figure out a way to make it work for the Invasors, and he wasn’t around for this one. Instead, Negro dropped the comedy since he was supposed to be setting up his match with Charly here. Finish didn’t look like it was supposed to be a finish at all, so it’s nice that Psicosis confirmed it went wrong.

I’m done with Mistico singles matches from here on out. I don’t want to be critical of a man who does tornillos to the floor knowing no one will catch him, because he’s sacrificing himself in a significant way, but the matches themselves have nothing to offer to anyone who’s watched one before. Everything is a headscissors, dive, back in for a move and a kickout, everyone lays dead for 30 seconds, everyone gets back up and continues as if they’re perfectly okay. We can break it down in wrestling terminology – the selling is absurd, the psychology is non-existent and nothing that happens in the last fall matters until Mistico tries his finish – but the bottom line is it’s not very entertaining and similar guys are having much more entertaining matches.

tope to nowhere

Aerostar, Gato Eveready, Laredo Kid vs Oficial 911, Oficial AK47, Oficial Fierro: Great! A really fun match against two teams who work off each other naturally. I’d much rather see the IWRG version of three falls and more time, but this was a fine little TV match.

El Elegido & Heavy Metal vs Alan Stone & Chris Stone: One of the Stones NOT losing their hair to Elegido would be a giant surprise. They just seemed like set up men for the tecnicos to get runs on until the big rudo came along.

Silver King & Último Gladiador vs Hijo de Cien Caras & Máscara Año 2000 Jr. for the AAA World Tag Team Championship: Junior Dinamitas do nothing for me and this didn’t change that much, though at least they did a ‘real’ IWRG brawl and Ultimo Gladiador’s dive to nowhere was superb.

El Mesías, Jack Evans, La Parka Jr. vs Billy Boy, Decnnis, LA Park, Zorro: shockingly, Billy & Decnnis did not look like stars after being beat here. Usual AAA main event.
