Terrible wins multiple matches, Dragon Rojo out of action, CMLL Anniversary show non-press conference

9) Rey Escorpión & Terrible b Valiente & Volador Jr. [Copa 81st Anniversary, quarterfinal]
10) Rey Escorpión & Terrible b Atlantis & Stuka Jr. [Copa 81st Anniversary, semifinal]

Terrible won three matches in one day! That’s normally like a month for him. Meanwhile, Atlantis & Stuka advanced to the semifinal without actually winning a match on their own. Tournaments.

CMLL announced a press conference would happen today to talk about the Anniversary card, then canceled it yesterday afternoon. This seems like typical CMLL behavior, the same as happened with the TV Azteca deal, but I’m told there’s more to it – CMLL is considering running a significant angle and/or adding a match because Anniversary ticket sales have been softer than expected. People suggested a seventh match would be added to get Sombra on the card and they may end up being right (though I don’t know if it involves Sombra.) I have no idea what exactly is going on, except it would happen Friday night if it’s happening at all. I don’t even know how likely it is, only that it was enough to postpone the press conference for the moment.

Dragon Rojo announced on Twitter yesterday that his persistent knee injury will keep him out of action. La Sombra replaces Dragon Rojo today, and Mascara Dorada does the same on Friday. Fuego’s added to the card to take Dorada’s spot on Friday.

Also, for no obvious reason, Marco and Volador swap places on Sunday. That puts Marco in the main event (w/Rush & Atlantis vs Shocker, Ultimo Guerrero, Gran Guerrero) and Volador in the fourth (w/La Mascara & Titan versus Rey Bucanero, Terrible, Vangellys.) It’s possible CMLL could have another title match main event on 09/21 and maybe changed their mind on which one they’re doing.

Today’s Arena Mexico show is now main evented by Super Porky, Valiente, and Stuka Jr. vs Mephisto, Terrible and Rey Bucanero Jr., so maybe they’ll set up Valiente or Stuka versus Mephisto for the holiday show. Guadalajara has Atlantis, Rush, and Titan versus Ultimo Guerrero, Gran Guerrero, and Euforia. The big match there might come from the Mexico/DF cibernetico, which includes Dragon Lee and Virus on opposite teams.

LuchaWorld has this week’s Poster-Mania.

Black Terry Jr. is posting highlights of the Lucha Memes show. The Freelance/Suicide vs Toxin Boy/Fly Star and Extreme Boy/Aeroboy matches are up now.

Astral is #1 on the CMLL top 10 list. Euforia is 10th.

The Gladiatores catches up with Saruman.

Rayo de Jalisco Jr. has a movie coming out next year.

TG Power unmasked himself and retired in Tijuana.

Culto Santanico beat Los Piratas in San Luis Potosi.

Corsario de Fuego won the NWA Mexican Welterweight Championship from Skayde, who might have it again by the next time it’s mentioned.

Lucha Libre In Japan

09/09 Dragon Gate: Flamtia (c) b Kzy [OPEN THE BRAVE GATE] – fifth defense, Flamita keeps the title even though he was headed home after this match. That’s pretty unusual (and great) for a Mexican in a Japanese promotion. Gif of the finish here. He was challenged by K-ness for a title match when he returns.

Lineups

CMLL (TUE) 09/16/2014 Arena Puebla
1) Arkalis, Meyer, Paris vs Guerrero Espacial, Rey Apocalipsis, Toro Bill Jr.
2) Dark Angel & Estrellita vs Amapola & Zeuxis
3) Black Panther, Blue Panther, Cachorro vs Misterioso Jr., Pierroth, Sagrado
4) La Máscara, Máscara Dorada, Volador Jr. vs Euforia, Shocker, Vangellys
5) Marco Corleone & Rush vs Rey Escorpión & Terrible

Tuesday night show due to Independence day holiday.

Zeuxis/Estrellita is happening again.

The main event isn’t even listed as for a Copa now. I suppose they’d have to get a trophy if it was for one.

Arkalis, the latest name to come up on Puebla’s rotating list of novatos, has been turning up on indy shows since April and appears to be a Centella de Oro trainee.

Noches de Coliseo was all a repeat again. IWRG is airing at the weirdest times.

Puebla files came out really small, so I must’ve scre wed up things. (Except the lightning match, which I got from another airing that had a couple of dropouts.)

Since TripleMania has aired on TV and is already available for free on AAA’s site, I’ve included a copy of the SkyPPV. It does drop off a little bit at times but it’s there if you can’t get to the AAA channel for whatever reason.

Reminder: I’m in Mexico next Tuesday and just getting back the following one. I’ll post what I have when I get a chance, but I’m thinking it’ll probably just be on YouTube for the time being.

Hijo de Dos retains title, Lucha Underground

IWRG (SUN) 09/07/2014 Arena Naucalpan [IWRG]
1) Dragón Celestial & Metaleon b Araña de Plata & Hip Hop Man
straight falls.
2) Apolo Estrada Jr., Avisman, El Hijo del Diablo b Diva Salvaje, Miss Gaviota, Saruman
Saruman, last seen failing at juggling, had his first match here since Christmas. He lost but looked good (as did Avisman.)
3) Canis Lupus, Trauma I, Trauma II b Dr. Cerebro, Golden Magic, Kenshi Kabuki
Rudos took 2/3, Truama II submitting Golden Magic.
4) Cien Caras Jr., Hijo de Máscara Año 2000, Universo 2000 Jr. b Máscara Sagrada, Pantera, Toscano
Primos Dinamitas took 1/3 clean. Universo’s debut here.
5) Hijo De Dos Caras © b Demon Clown [IWRG IC HEAVY]
Straight falls. Dos reversed a suplex into a small package to take the first. Cien Caras Jr., Demon’s second, accidentally hit the challenger with a senton in the second to set up the loss. Demon was upset with Cien but Cien ignored him and challenged Dos for a title match. First defense for Hijo de Dos.

People close to Lucha Underground expect the visa issues with Drago, Fenix and Pentagon will be cleared up by this weekend and they’ll be on those tapings. As expected, there are elements of the show which were not done in front of the live audience (said to be more Latino for show 2.) Maybe not as expected is that some of that will be filming in Mexico; they’re supposed to do some vignettes with some of the characters there late this week.

Film festival Beyond Fest will be giving away tickets to Lucha Underground. All tickets are giveaways, this is more about getting word about the shows to bigger/more audiences.

There will be a press conference for the CMLL Anniversary show on Tuesday around noon. Maybe Sombra should stop by, see if he can change someone’s mind.

Today’s CMLL show was supposed to be the second half of the tag team title tournament. There’s still a tag team tournament, but it’s no longer for the titles: just a random Copa instead. I’d expect they’ll just go with whoever was supposed to face Rush & Marco before the change (no sense in changing), so there’s a chance Terrible might actually beat people tonight.

Myzteziz told a reported in Puebla that he was surpised he ended up in AAA; he thought he would end up back in CMLL, and thought the same would happen with Alberto. Myzteziz airs his usual complaints with the CMLL programmers and his respect for CMLL ownership. He also says it’s been a tough adjustment to go from WWE style (and CMLL prior) to AAA style.

Rob has highlights of 06/06/14 CMLL.

LuchaWorld had KrisZ’s news update.

Segunda Caida reviews El Hijo del Santo vs Blue Panther from 2004, a really great match.

El Ancho/Hercules Peucelle of Titanes en el Ring has passed away. The story has been picked up in a lot of places.

Tigre Uno will be part of the CHIKARAs Rey de Voladors, appearing in at least on the 09/20 show (and also the 09/21 show if he wins.)

A story on Seattle’s Lucha Libre Volcanica.

Lineup

IWRG (WED) 09/10/2014 Arena Naucalpan
1) Galaxy vs Matrix Jr.
2) Alfa & Omega vs Atomic Star & Capitán Muerte
3) Dragón Celestial, El Divino, Silver Star vs Hip Hop Man, Rayan, Spartan
4) Imposible, Kenshi Kabuki, Metaleon vs Chucho el Roto, Ironía, Yakuza
5) Diva Salvaje, Relámpago, Veneno vs Canis Lupus, Eterno, Oficial AK47 [lumberjack strap]

Random strap match, seems about right. Some weeks the Eterno/Kabuki feud is happening. Some weeks they’re just in different matches. I dunno.

I’m assuming that’s Silver Star from Monterrey, which is random but less random than another Silver Star existing. There has been a Divino in Monterrey so maybe that’s him.

CMLL (SUN) 09/14/2014 Arena México
1) Eléctrico & Último Dragoncito vs Pequeño Olímpico & Pierrothito
2) Goya Kong, La Vaquerita, Silueta vs Dalys, La Seductora, Tiffany
3) Ángel de Oro, Fuego, Stuka Jr. vs Kamaitachi, Okumura, Virus
4) La Máscara, Marco Corleone, Titán vs Rey Bucanero, Terrible, Vangellys
5) Diamante Azul © vs Euforia [NWA LH]
Diamante Azul is champion. Fifth defense.
6) Atlantis, Dragón Rojo Jr., Volador Jr. vs Gran Guerrero, Shocker, Último Guerrero

Azul & Euforia don’t get a main event (not as big a match as Maximo and Shocker). I’d be really surprised of Azul lost.

CMLL (SUN) 09/14/2014 Arena Coliseo Guadalajara
1) Dr. Frezeer vs El Yaqui
2) Idolo & Javier Cruz Jr. vs Évola & Thunder Boy
3) Sky Kid vs Rey Trueno
4) Brillante & Dragon Lee vs Demonio Maya & Sádico
5) Omar Brunetti & Rey Cometa vs Cavernario & Maléfico
6) La Sombra & Valiente vs Ephesto & Mephisto

Cometa/Cavernario here, which builds up their hair match nicely for an audience that’s probably only going to be able to see it on the internet (and on TV, by delay.) Demonio Maya/Brillante appears to be a new feud.

09/07 AAA TV Results (Pachuca)

AAA TV (SUN) 09/07/2014 Lienzo Charro, Pachuca, Hidalgo [AAA]
1) Dinastía, Ludxor, Venum b El Apache, Mamba, Mini Abismo Negro
Double Spanish Fly by the Cadetes on Apache and Dinastia added a 450 splash.
2) Eterno & Taya Valkyrie b Bengala & Faby Apache
Taya northern lights suplex Faby
3) Aerostar DQ Súper Fly
Super Fly hit Hijo del Tirantes (???) and was DQed. Super Fly took Aero’s mask after the match.
4) Daga, Demon Rocker, Machine Rocker b Argenis, Jack Evans, Joe Lider
Machine Rocker replaced Hijo de Pirata Morgan. Lider turned on his partners, choking out Jack with a rope. Taya gave Lider a Perros del Mal shirt after the match.
5) Averno & Texano Jr. b Monsther Clown & Psycho Clown
Monster Clown was the “mystery” wrestler – though Cibernetico also appeared, sitting with the announcers for the match. Texano got a revenge win over Psycho Clown. Joe Lider & Daga attacked Psycho & Monster after the match until Murder ran out for the save.
6) el Hijo del Perro Aguayo DQ Myzteziz
Argenis and Avenro were seconds. Maya was back as a referee. Myzteziz accidentally fouled Perro, then put on La Mistica, but Maya of course called the DQ. The two agreed to one more fall, where Myzteziz cleanly submitted Perro Aguayo.

Air Date: 09/13 & 09/20.

The second part of the main event – Myzteziz getting the clean win – is not mentioned in AAA’s recap or on Facebook, but the message about it was still alive on Twitter this morning. It’s possibly it was only meant for the live crowd to send them home happy or it just wasn’t meant to be a real match (Myzteziz got the armbar, Perro tapped out and rolled out, no ref.) It may make more sense on TV, and it’s nice to give the fans something of an ending after doing DQs in both singles matches and not really delivering on the surprise wrestler.

A lot of Perros del Mal victories, as noted in the recap. Maybe Lider turning on Jack means he’s getting a tag partner and a title shot, but it could’ve just been about Jack being around. Hijo de Pirata Morgan is either a new father or about to be, judging from Lolita’s Twitter – he might be replaced in Cancun as well.

Q: How did Apache end up taking the double Spanish fly in the opener? A: Apache is crazy.

Show looks full in the places they sold tickets, but it doesn’t look like they sold tickets everywhere. Which is odd for Perro/Myzteziz.

Next taping is 09/14 in Cancun.

6) Dragon Lee II & Star Jr. b Belial & Impulso
Indystrucitbles wanted a rematch and team Tight T-Shirt accepted.
7) Silueta b Marcela, Zeuxis, Dark Angel
Silueta beat Marcela!

I’m jealous this show happened this weekend instead of next. Reviews of the show were strong. I think, outside of the missing 3 people in the rumble (which may just have been omitted; Apolo says there was 20), everyone on the ChilangaMask/Lucha Meme card actually made the show. Things don’t work out that well for them that often.

My hunch is Herodes’ problem in CMLL was less with the matches itself, but a “only so many hours in a day” conflict between training for CMLL and whatever else he has going on and CMLL had to go but we’ll continue to see him on indy shows like this for the time being. (In other words, it’s more a problem of working in CMLL as an undercard guy not being a living wage alone .) This is your opening to fantasy book his inevitable IWRG feud.

Rudos took 1/3, Azul and Euforia continuing to feud and Euforia submitting Azul in the end. Euforia challenged Azul to a title match next week (in Arena Mexico.)

Didn’t see the show; think we’re in a month stretch where I’m not going to see the show on Terra, though I might catch it live once. Most of the recent shows have been missible – there hasn’t been a lot of good match making and the Azul/Euforia match isn’t going to change that.

Astral had a lot of family/friends there. I guess they had a good feeling and/or though they could push him over the top if they all came.

4) Mr. Águila & Sádico b Omar Brunetti & Smaker
Rudos took 1/3. Aguila cheated to beat Omar.
5) Maléfico b Exterminador [hair]
Malefico took 2/3 to win the hair match over his ex-ally.
6) Cavernario & Terrible b Dragón Rojo Jr. & Gallo and Ángel de Oro & Stuka Jr. and Pierroth & Sagrado
Gallo & Dragon Rojo were out first via foul (unclear by who), then Pierroth got DQed for unmasking Angel de Oro. Cavernario & Terrible beat Oro & Stuka clean for the win.

Show was heavy with FRAM sponsorship. I wonder if they’ve convinced Agulia to lose to Omar in the end.

Air Date: 10/15?

Again, this looks like they’re doing one TV show per taping. (Taping was said to go 90 minutes.)  The roster looks to be really small at the moment . The US people who were talked about but haven’t appeared are Joey Ryan, Angela Fong, Candice LaRae, Rocky Romero, Scorpio Sky, Aaron Aguilera and Kaos. Romero’s back in NJPW thru at least 09/23, so he may have some association with this promotion but wasn’t ever going to be on these shows. I would assume some of those just didn’t sign the contract when it came to it.

Also, no Fenix, Drago or Pentagon again, but now we know why: PWInsider says their working visa was not done in time, so they could not work the show. PWInsider says this caused these show to be rewritten. I think I can confirm that. My impression, based on a tiny little bit of the a draft of a script I might have seen, is that Drago, Demon and Fenix (him versus Chavo) were all supposed to be in matches on that first show or had matches set up for future shows as part of the $100,000 prize storyline. Sexy Star would appear but not wrestle, and Pentagon wasn’t mentioned in what I might have read.

That’s bordering on unbelievable given how everyone knew that was important from the moment the project was announced, and how long they’ve had to take care of that issue. Based on what Drago was tweeting prior to TripleMania (and his last minute inclusion on the show), he might have not been originally planned on the show so maybe it’s make more sense with him. Though, even then, if you were going to add someone at the last minute, why add someone who you weren’t sure could work the shows? Someone really dropped the ball here and may have screwed up this show (even it if it wasn’t already screwed up.)

Demon may have US residency at this point, and wouldn’t be subject to the same issue. The smaller mystery is how Sexy Star is cleared but the other three aren’t.

On a more storyline note, Sexy Star seems to be a tecnica on this show, which just seems so strange.

In the long term, this may mean things feel more lucha if/when Pentagon, Drago and Fenix are allowed to work the shows, but I’ve got little confidence of that given everything. Given how late everything came together, they probably should’ve considered just delaying the first week of taping once those guys weren’t available but I have no idea how long it takes from them to turn them from recording to something that can go on El Rey; they might have left themselves no time. Or maybe it’s possible they’ll air out of order? I have no idea, this is just me exhausting the possibilities.

The one PWInsider quote that’s really captured everyone’s attention:

The wrestling styles was described to me as “WWE style” in the ring, as opposed to a traditional Lucha style. Chavo Guerrero, who was working as an agent last night, was said to be telling wrestlers to do less and make it mean more

That flies counter to every Konnan suggestion that this would be a PWG-style high spot spectucalur I think the point to remember here is the stuff Konnan’s said is pretty irrelevant. I don’t think he lied about what he would like to see, I don’t think he really gets to decide what happens at all.  I think AAA believed they might have to give up control of the writing and the look, but could at least control the in-ring. Doesn’t appear that’s going to be case either – or maybe people are just working at cross purposes. Seems a fair bit of that already.

Wrestler fan attendance was down from Day 1, with the crowd being mostly extra and maybe not even a lot of them. There’s enough people involved with this project who like talking enough that they really should’ve had people involved with the show and promotion doing media appearances to build interest in this project well before tapings started. They need something more than photos on Twitter, and they need not wait until October to start talking (and, really, to counter the bad publicity it’s gotten from places like here.) Obviously, there were/are enough other issues that there probably wasn’t time for that sort of campaign; the bad turnouts are just one of a few symptoms of putting everything together at the last second.. They’re going to give out free tickets to get anyone to come, but there’s probably no hope of attendance turning around at least until the show makes air, and that’ll still be dependent on people actually seeing the show. It’s kind of amazing it’s this hard to give away tickets to wrestling in Los Angeles – forget AAA Mexico proper, I can’t even imagine how many tickets PWG could’ve just sold to Battle of Los Angeles, with a couple guys who are working these shows – but I think that’s just the way it’s going to be. There’s about six days of regrouping to come, but I don’t think much is going to change. It is what it is.

Edit: Lucha Underground says there hasn’t been any seat fillers.
