Recapped: 09/01/11

There's a seeding battle royal here, but I'm still protesting. Edgar is ref. Aereo wins the award for craziest bump out, Bam Bam wins for easiest. Mercurio wins for least believable.

Match 1: Pequeño Halcón & Pequeño Maximo vs Pequeño Olímpico & Shockercito in a relevos suicidas quarterfinal
Arena Mexico, 08/21/2011

Winner: Pequeño Halcón & Pequeño Maximo
Match Time: 4:43
Rating: not good
Notes: Joined with everyone in the ring and already starting, which will be the way of matches. Ref is Rodolfo.

Shockercito has trouble with Halcón, or more Halcón has trouble doing the monkey flip escape spot. They're otherwise even, and shake hands after their brief face off. Clip to Olímpico kicking and armdragging Máximo around. He comes back with a headscissors from the mat, but Olímpico kicks him in the corner. Corner whip is oddly reversed, Máximo belly bumps him down, teases it, and crushes Olímpico with a running sit in the corner. Almost took out a camera too. Shockercito takes on Máximo with a dropkick. Rare time where Shockercito is the bigger man. Mini Máximo does the Máximo head and hip fakes to set up the springboard butt bump. Shockercito headscissors on Máximo is a bit of an advantage. Máximo comes right back with a springboard armdrag, Shockercito with a nice flipping armdrag, but we're just taking turns doing moves. They both do their dive roll poses too, and then shakes hands and leave. Olímpico is not to thrilled with his partner's friendliness, giving him the business as he goes out Halcón and Olímpico in. Does Halcón have painted on muscles? Weird definition at least. Halcón showcase includes Halcón going for and failing at springboard rope bounce headscissors. Olímpico charitable rolls all the way out on an armdrag instead. Fans boo. Halcón follows with a tope, which Olímpico chooses to catch by shoving Halcón as he flies him. Very weird. Also very weird: Halcón has “SAY MY NAME” painted on his back! Your name is Pequeño Halcón, there you go. Máximo tries to add his Asai moonsault , but only gets his partner. Shockercito tries to add his dive, but his tope only gets his partner (and quite strongly.) What happens if they all get counted out? Hmm. They probably don’t get all counted out. Announcers note Halcon's message, mission accomplished. Shockercito dropkick Halcón and puts on an inverted figure four, but they’re right next to the ropes. Halcón grabs it. Shockercito tries a whip, reversed, Halcón drops him with a flapjack and gets on a tapatía. Rolling! Máximo kiss cradle on Olímpico, and that'll do.

Match 2: Bam Bam & Pierrothito vs Aereo & Pequeño Nitro in a relevos suicidas quarterfinal
Arena Mexico, 08/21/2011

Winner: Aereo & Pequeño Nitro
Match Time: 4:59
Rating: ok
Notes: Bam Bam is leaving the ring as we join, so we've missed something. Pompin is ref.

Pierrothito repeatedly runs into Aereo's corner kicks, then Aereo flips thru Pierrohtio's feet. Flipping armdrag looks great. Follow up slap does not, but it misses and Pierrothito slaps him down. Pierrothito punishes Aero with another shot to the chest. Rudo misses a clothesline, and Aero has a nice helicopter headscissors to send him out. Aereo starts to run, but Bam Bam lights him up with a nice dropkick. Nitro in but missing with his own dropkick. Nitro slapped down and creamed at. Whip, Bam Bam with a hard clothesline. Pierrothito yells approval, and Bam Bam drags Nitro in position – Pierrothito slingshot elbow drop. Bam Bam tosses Aero, as Pierrothito drops Nitro with a fireman's carry Michinoku Driver. Double clothesline on Nitro misses, a double slap does connect, and the rudos – they are the rudos, clearly – tie Nitro in the ropes. Bam Bam nicely adds a boosted dropkick, and Pierrothito adds on of his own. Both slap Aereo in the back hard. Rebound hiptoss faceslam and a dropkick out for him. Nitro gets in a shot on Pierrothito, but Bam Bam puts him down and screams at him. Nitro whipped into a corner, Aero is whipped to him, Nitro flips his partner to the apron, Bam Bam misses a dropkick and gets caught in the ropes, and Nitro pulls him off with a backcracker. Aero sends Pierrothito out whit a flying armdrag and flies after him – tope con giro includes Aereo getting caught in the ropes and barely clearing the apron. Nitro holds Bam Bam in a camel clutch, lets go, and gives him a big takedown instead. Nitro pounds his chest instead of trying to finish. Now he does a small package? One two NO. I have no idea why this match is still going. Sunset flip ends up with Pierrothito accidentally dropkicking Bam Bam, which I guess is my answer. Aero frog splashes Bam Bam for one pin, Nitro gets Pierrothito with a mounted armbar for the other.

Match 3: Astral & Pequeño Violencia vs Eléctrico & Mercurio in a relevos suicidas quarterfinal
Arena Mexico, 08/21/2011

Winner: Eléctrico & Mercurio
Match Time: 5:17
Rating: not good
Notes: Tiger Hispano is ref, with Mercurio and Astral in, and in the middle of JCR giving a Mercurio background lesson. (He's 23, from Monterrey, trained by the Hermano Diablos, Virus, and Hijo del Gladiator, 72kg.)

He's also getting handled by Astral, until Violencia tags in and handles him as well. Powerbomb in the midst of the slaps and screams. Mercurio is able to survive, armdrag Violencia away and sort of hold his own in a chop fight. His timing is a bit off – he's a little early or a little late, and sometimes camera switches hide it better than other. They try to do a crucifix bomb spot where Mercurio pushes off the top buckle to flip escape, but that doesn't work at all. A bit too ambitious. Crowd not very into it. Violencia just dropkick Mercurio out. Eléctrico looks much better in his short stint with Violencia, but his usual amigo Astral trips him up from the outside to stop a dive, then dances over him a bit. They get into a chop fight. Astral is wearing a shirt, and being rudo-ish here, so he wins. Whip, Eléctrico gets lost running, finds the ropes, and comes back to dropkick Astral in the knee. Eléctrico handspring headscissors goes better than I would've figured. Eléctrico arm mares Astral over and goes for the shirt, but Violencia makes the save. Violencia and Mercurio face off as JCR talks about Violencia's prior life as Fierito. Rudos battle to even, Violencia kicks Mercurio to the ropes, and then runs right into a hiptosses the floor. Mercurio follows with a nice Asai tornillo. Astral does a Sombra front flip off the apron to the floor to escapes Eléctrico, but he’s right behind him with a top rope Asai moonsault. Rudos back in first, Mercurio catching Violencia with a face first powerbomb and a dropkick to send him out. Astral broadsides Mercurio. He's getting booed, him. Astral charges, Mercurio puts him on the top rope, Eléctrico charge and climbs up the corner, Astral jabs him in the side, lifts him on his shoulders, and still gets pulled into a 'rana. One two three. Mercurio with a bodyscissors powerbomb on Violencia.

Match 4: Fantasy & Pequeño Warrior vs Pequeño Universo 2000 & Último Dragoncito in a relevos suicidas quarterfinal
Arena Mexico, 08/21/2011

Winner: Pequeño Universo 2000 & Último Dragoncito
Match Time: 2:57
Rating: short
Notes: I guess body paint is the thing today, but Ultimo Dragoncito has a rad painting of a Dragon on his chest (to go with a new, spiky mask.) Ref is Edgar.

Dragoncito is rudo-ish, but pulls out a nice fireman's escape headscissors to send out Fantasy. Universo knocks Warrior around a bit, Warrior puts a stop to him to dance, headstand headscissors is pulled off. Enziguri leads to an Universo chest slide to the floor. Dragoncito spinning armdrag sends Warrior out, Fantasy gets to show off with a flipping run and a handspring armdrag, but Dragoncito stays in. Wow, there's a lot of empty seats here, this show didn't do anything special. Dragoncito pulls off a flying headscissors to send Fantasy out, and Fantasy takes the Dragoncito crushing tope con giro. Rudos in, Universo takes down Warrior and puts on a sloppy half crab with armbar for a submission. CO for the other one.

Match 5: Pequeño Olímpico & Shockercito vs Bam Bam & Pierrothito in a relevos suicidas semifinal
Arena Mexico, 08/21/2011

Winner: Pequeño Olímpico & Shockercito
Match Time: 4:31
Rating: OK
Notes: Bam Bam/Pierrothito is beating down their rivals as they pick up. Rodolfo is ref.

And then, for no obvious reason, the tide turns. Maybe Olímpico did something to start it, but Shockercito just got up and started fighting back. Team Pierrothito reasserts control, Bam Bam kicking Olímpico in the head on the outside, then coming in so Pierrothito can toss Shockercito into a superkick. They take mini Guapo to the ramp for a pres slam into a gutbuster. Bam Bam is taking pleasure in kicking people when they're down. Things go badly when Bam Bam holds Shockercito for a kick, and Pierrothito knocks his partner back into the middle of the ring. Shockercito charges Pierrothito, Pierrothito tosses him, and Shockercito gets Bam Bam with a (quite horrible) headscissors. Tope follows, Bam Bam tumbling into the second row. Shockercito goes down, holding his knee, as Olímpico armdrag and dropkick Pierrothito at técnicos peed. Tope there too. Shockercito must be okay, because he climbs out to the ropes. Plancha onto Bam caught and fiercely turned into a spinning side slam. Fireman's carry drop, Bam Bam going up, pausing, moonsault misses, Shockercito rolling well clear. Olímpico dropkicks Bam Bam from behind and pounds him in the back of the head with forearms. Face first powerbomb, Olímpico covers one two big kickout. Olímpico puts on a hold, Pierrothito breaks it up, and suplexes him. Pierrothito lifts up Olímpico and holds him. Bam Bam superkick - yea, that didn't work. Pierrothito is dead, and Olímpico quebradora Bam Bam. Shocker rushes back in to reinera Bam Bam, while Olímpico puts Pierrothito in a hold for his own submission. They're done.

Match 6: Astral & Pequeño Violencia vs Fantasy & Pequeño Warrior in a relevos suicidas semifinal
Arena Mexico, 08/21/2011

Winner: Fantasy & Pequeño Warrior
Match Time: 3716-4231
Rating: bleh
Notes: Ref is Pompin.

Violencia kicks Fantasy around on the outside, while Astral works over Warrior with elbows smashes. Astral's a mean guy today. Backdrop for Warrior, and an angry look to the crowd. Fantasy and Warrior are whipped into each other in the center of the ring. Rudos can’t quite get coordinated on what they want to do next, and there's a lot of wandering around until the pseudo-técnicos assert control randomly. Violencia is shoulderblocks out, and Fantasy accidentally boosts Astral into a dropkick on Warrior. Fantasy misses a senton. Two people start a Fantasy chant. It does not last. Crowd is mostly bored, then turns on Fantasy and Astral as they keep going. Fantasy springboard front flip armdrag sends Astral out, and Fantasy clubs him with an Asai tornillo, leg to the head. Rudos in, and hoping around to get the crowd into this. Not taking. Clothesline, neither man goes down but both are stunned. They try again, same result. Third time, Violencia dropkick Warrior in the knee. Crowd is not into it. Violencia ends up pulled out for the Warrior guillotine legdrop. Fantasy and Astral in, Astral pretends to dropkick Fantasy but the miss isn’t even really close, but it does perfectly hang him in the ropes for a Warrior guillotine moonsault. Warrior helps out to pull astral's legs from the ropes, and that's the end of Astral. Pompin counts out Violencia – should be a bad sign for his next match if he can't make it in for this one.

Match 7: Astral & Pequeño Violencia vs Bam Bam & Pierrothito in a relevos suicidas final
Arena Mexico, 08/21/2011

Winner: Astral & Pequeño Violencia
Match Time: 5:19
Rating: good
Notes: Pierrothito and Violencia in to start. Ref is Tigre Hispano.

Violencia and Pierrothito are ready to fight it out, but don't get far on a double clothesline. They start to talk, and their técnico partners (both who've been acting like rudos) rush in to shove them. Rudo take no guff, shoves them down, and celebrate. Técnicos recover and dropkick them both out. Rudos fights among themselves on the outside, and the técnico to the same on the inside, before turning it into a tope and a tope con giro on the rudos. Replay. Bam Bam makes it alone, Astral in after hi a delay. Astral wants a high ten, and Bam Bam just gives him a look. Handshake? Handslap. Both off the ropes, both dive fake pose., Astral sings, Bam Bam ducks and a headscissors. Astral swings, misses again, and Bam Bam slaps him down. Astral goes down like a tree. Whip, Bam Bam runs into boots (sort of), Fantasy flips out of the corner and armdrags Bam Bam out. Dive? No, dive fake again and taunt. Back to the rudos in and slapping. Off the ropes evasion, Pierrothito with a casadora armdrags (!) but Violencia stops him with a big knee. Short clothesline spots gets messed up badly, and Pierrothito backdrops Violencia all the way to the floor. Pierrothito goes for dive, but Astral nicely cuts him off with a swing kick. Astral springboard flips in, and takes a spear from Pierrothito. Cover, one two no. Pierrothito strips off Astral's shirt (!) and fisherman’s suplexes him, one two NO. Reversals led to a Bam Bam middle rope headscissors on Astral, but Violencia breaks up that pin. Crowd doing a lot of booing. Violencia with a spinebuster on Bam Bam, but Pierrothito breaks that up. Pierrothito dropkick Violencia out after some back and forth, but Astral cuts him off with a dropkick, and Violencia goes up – top rope senton lands, one two three. Astral puts Bam Bam in a hold and gets him too. Big celebration by the survivors.

Match 8: Bam Bam vs Pierrothito in a hair versus mask
Arena Mexico, 08/21/2011

Winner: Pierrothito
Match Time: 5:52
Rating: good for the time
Notes: Rodolfo is ref, so they did change it again between matches.

Bam Bam knocks Pierrothito down, but get hiptossed to the ramp. Pierrothito kicks him while he’s down and throws him on the ramp. Violencia appears to be watching this from the top of the ramp, but it's tough to tell who it is for sure. Pierrothito trashes Bam Bam for a bit, but misses a clothesline and takes a headscissors near the stairs. Bam Bam hurries to the ring, but it’s not like he’s getting counted out. Pierrothito charges, and takes a big backdrop into the ring. Springboard dropkick gets Pierrothito, one two NO. Bam Bam debates the count. Corner whip, Bam Bam charges, Pierrothito moves, and Bam Bam hits the post on the way out. Pierrothito up top – big plancha wipes out Bam Bam. Replay. They're both in when they return. Oh no, there's a Bam Bam fan in the crowd. This is going to be sad. Evasion, corner flip by Bam Bam leads to a Bam Bam superkick. Bam Bam fired up, but the crowd boos. Bam Bam covers belatedly, one two NO. Whip, reverses, Bam Bam spins thru the ropes and Pierrothito himself out, and Bam Bam keeps running to land his tornillo. A fan pats Bam Bam on the stomach as he lazy on the floor recovering. That's either really nice or not . Cut back to action, Pierrothito running into a spin kick, but rolling thru on a plancha. One two NO. Bam Bam trips up Pierrothito and locks on a tapatia. Pierrothito up and breaking free, but falling backwards. Both shoulders down, one two NO. Bam Bam slams Pierrothito and pounds the turnbuckle . This didn’t work before. Didn't work this time either, missing Pierrothito with the moonsault just barely as he moved out of the way. One two NO. Whip, Pierrothito drop toe hold, elbow dropt to eh back, and pose. Pierrothito off the ropes, off the ropes, tripped up by Bam Bam. Crowd boos. Casita, one two NO, Bam Bam reveres into another cradle one two NO. Nice move there. Another cut. Bam Bam sunset flip, Pierrothito roll thru dropkick, but he's too tired to follow up. Both to their feet. Pierrothito charges, dropkick misses, Bam Bam goes up – guillotine dropkick MISSES, Pierrothito puling himself out of the way just in time. Great post. Springboard senton misses, Pierrothito running to apply the bridging inverted facelock. Bam Bam hangs on, but not for long. Winner!
