Virus out lasts Guerrero Maya, Camorra vs Stigma, Toryumom Mexico

Toryumon Mexico (SUN) 10/06/2013 Sala de Armas Magdalena Mixhuca [The Gladiatores]
1) Graco El Gladiador & Leonidas b Super Peluche & Yoruba
2) Crazy Star (F), Felina Metalica, Star Fire b Anime, Babe Star, Mystique
3) Black Thunder & Hanaoka b Infierno & Krator and Hacha & Piel Roja
Black Thunder replaced Douki.
4) Magnus, Oro Jr., Super Ciudadano b Akuma, Cholo, Pantera Asesina
Pantera Asesina “replaced” Patan. Ciudadano is a sponsored character. Yoruba attacked Ciudadano, in what seemed the build up to an apuesta match.
5) Atlantis & Último Dragón b Gran Guerrero & Último Guerrero
Ultimo Dragon beat Gran Guerrero with the Dragon Cutter. Usual challenges followed

Attendance looks down in the pictures, for what it matters. (They may have just not given away as many tickets.) The winners got the usual boxes of merchandise. They should have one more show in December, which is usually the Young Dragon’s Cup.

CMLL (SUN) 10/06/2013 Arena Mexico [@therealfredo, CMLL, Yahoo! Deportes]
1) Shockercito & Último Dragoncito b Mercurio & Pequeño Olímpico
Tecnicos took 1/3 in a good opener.
2) Arkángel de la Muerte, Camorra, Hooligan b Hombre Bala Jr., Stigma, Súper Halcón Jr.
Rudos took 2/3. Hooligan beat Hombre Bala in the third, Super Halcon beat Hooligan and had a hold on Arkangel, but Camorra stole Stigma’s mask and rolled him up for the win. Rudos denied any cheating in the post match interview (which also included Isis given a chance to talk only to forget her line.)
3) Fuego, Sagrado, Tritón b Boby Zavala, Hijo del Signo, Puma
Fuego replaced Diamante, Hijo del Signo replaced Misterioso. Tecnicos took 2/3. Sagrado used his Devil’s Wings variation on Puma for the win. Another good match. Triton mentioned he currently has an ankle injury (the one he picked up Tuesday.)
4) La Máscara, Marco Corleone, Rush b Dragón Rojo Jr., Tiger, Vangellys
Tecnicos took 1/3, despite Vangelis nicely spearing Marco in mid Aeroitalia run in the second. Another good match. In his post match interview, Rush mocked the usual “Good afternoon fans!” lines that tecnicos (and some rudos) do to get cheers
5) Virus b Guerrero Maya Jr. [CMLL SL]
Seconds were Pequeno Olimpico (who was visibly taller than Virus) and Fuego. Virus took the first with a submission, while Maya used a Sacrifica Maya and a choke to tie it up. Both falls were primarily on the mat, which the crowd was quiet but respectful towards. They pulled out bigger spots in a long third fall, including Virus pulling off the same casadora super powerbomb move he beat Maya in their previous title match, only for Maya to kick out this time. Lots of kickouts, and the crowd was very into the match. Virus finally won with a nudo variant. Virus makes a successful fifth defense. Virus gave Maya credit for his skill but refused any idea of a mask/title match since Maya had not won and did not deserve a rematch.
6) Atlantis, Máscara Dorada, Mistico DQ Euforia, Gran Guerrero, Último Guerrero
Tecnicos took 2/3. First two falls were super quick (this was one of the longer Sunday shows in some time.) Ultimo Guerrero got caught on his toss->behind the back foul move on Mistico for the DQ.

This was one of the strongest Sunday shows they’ve had on Terra. The main event wasn’t much, but everything else was at least good and the Guerrero Maya versus Virus match felt like one of the best CMLL matches of the year.

http://twitter.com/gmayacmll/status/387015154631602176

Guerero Maya, being the world’s best tecnico, apologized to everyone for letting us down and not winning the title. He really didn’t let anyone down, that was quite a match. And an actual title defense in Arena Mexico. CMLL used to have feuding people repeat title matches in various buildings more often, and they’d do well to repeat this match elsewhere.

Camorra versus Stigma appears to be a real feud, it’s just a matter of when they’ll be getting to the mask match, and if they’ll get lost along the way like Metalico and Hijo del Signo. (They seem to be doing better than those two so far.) I’m thinking it has a chance to be another 01/01 apuesta match, but that’s still along way to go. However long it’s going to take, it’s going to get Camorra booked much more regularly than he ever has been.

CMLL (SUN) 10/06/2013 Arena Coliseo Guadalajara [@acogdl]
1) El Capitan & Explosivo b El Yaki & Satara
A new debuting Explosivio, who led his team to victory in falls 1/3.
2) El Hippie I & El Hippie II b Évola & Sádico
Hippies took falls 2 (excessive violence DQ) and 3 for the win.
3) Infierno, Maléfico, Ráfaga b El Ídolo, Esfinge, Metatrón
Rudos were again DQed for excessive violence in the first fall of this match. This time, the rudos rebounded to take falls 2/3.
4) Valiente b Niebla Roja
Valiente took 2/3 to win. Niebla Roja paid tribute after the match to his recently deceased uncle, Gato Chávez.
5) La Sombra & Titán DQ Psicosis & Volador Jr.
Tecnicos took 2/3, the last when Volador pulled Sombra’s mask for the DQ.

Valiente & Niebla Roja sounds good in the summary. New Explosivo doesn’t look a lot like the old one, though I’m not positive I know which one it is.

Dorian Roldan talked with Apolo Valdes of MedioTiempo about the Dr. Wagner situation, expanding on the press release. Dorian explains Dr. Wagner was having problems with a third party trying to trademark his name in the US for their own purposes, knew AAA was working on securing trademarks in the US already, and asked if AAA would take care of it for him. Wagner even said he’d rather have AAA have control of it rather than anyone else, according to Dorian. Dorian repeated that the name is not fully trademarked and Wagner can have it, if he’ll pay the legal costs they already paid (which Dorian notes is cheaper than suing them.) Dorian says they have not heard from Wagner at all but their door is open. Dorian also says they have no interest in giving the Wagner name to someone else, saying it has no value for them in that way.

I still think the most likely outcome is Wagner doesn’t pay AAA, AAA doesn’t do anything with this and the trademark just goes away. (And then someone else steals in the US and Wagner blames AAA.)

Hijo del Pantera is on the current Wrestle-1 tour, though it looks like he’ll just be wrestling openers. Winning is better than losing. They’re talking about doing no weight divisions, which would not work out well for him.

In NOAH, Jushin Liger and Tiger Mask IV kept the GHC Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championship, and Super Crazy nominated himself and Pesadilla as challengers. Two other NOAH teams challenged, but the story is Liger doesn’t think much of any of the NOAH junior heavyweights. Crazy might be able to get the shot.

Lineups

CMLL (SUN) 10/13/2013 Arena Coliseo
1) Molotov & Sensei vs Espanto Jr. & Ramstein
2) Metálico, Stigma, Súper Halcón Jr. vs Camorra, Canelo Casas, Disturbio
3) Tritón vs Sangre Azteca [lightning]
4) Delta, Guerrero Maya Jr., Hijo del Fantasma vs Misterioso Jr., Namajague, Shigeo Okumura
5) Mistico, Thunder, Valiente vs Euforia, Niebla Roja, Último Guerrero
6) Atlantis, La Máscara, Titán vs Dragón Rojo Jr., Mephisto, Volador Jr.

Not as good a card. You could make one really good match and one really not good match out of the top 2 with some changes. Arena Coliseo champs in Arena Coliseo always could set up something. Sangre Azteca better either win or protect his face when Triton goes up top. Camorra versus Stigma still happening.

DTU (SUN) 10/13/2013 Arena Pavilion del Norte
1) Kaleth vs Ángel del MisterioJhonkyOptiumsKalibusEl Lacandón
2) La Magnifica, Lady Puma, Sexy Lady vs ?, Lolita, Zuzu Divine
3) Chica Ye-Ye, Espartaco, Hacker, Lince De Oro vs Boy Rocker, Dance Boy, Demente Extreme, Tempestad
4) Artikus & Drastik Boy vs Flamita & Rocky Lobo and Lanzeloth & Septimo Dragon and ? & Niño Hamburguesa
surprise will be a Monterrey wrestler
5) Violento Jack vs  Kaientai
6) Crazy Boy & Joe Lider vs Aero Boy & X-Fly and Black Fire & Lord Byron and Ángel o Demonio & Ovett

Another TVC Deportes taping. I don’t know what Kaientai’s agent was thinking about, getting him booked in that triangle match. It’s very dangerous.

Still surprised DTU hasn’t made/found a set of tag team titles, since this is essentially a tag team promotion for at least as long as Crazy Boy & Joe Lider have the AAA titles.

Escorpion vs Porky, Dallys ruda, AAA doesn’t want Wagner or his name

CMLL (FRI) 10/04 Arena Mexico [@therealfredo, CMLL]
1) Canelo Casas & Guerrero Negro Jr. b Oro Jr. & Soberano Jr.
Rudos took 2/3 in a match with some big spots.
2) Amapola, Princesa Blanca, Tiffany b Dallys la Caribeña, Estrellita, Marcela
Rudas took 1/3, with Dallys not getting along with Maricela and fully turning by the end of the match. The rudas fully welcomed Dallys to their side, with Princesa Blanca seeming happiest about the turn.
3) Titán DQ Vangellys [lightning]
Vangellys fouled Titan on a reverse springboard for the DQ in 6′ 46″. Good match.
4) Máximo, Stuka Jr., Super Porky b Dragón Rojo Jr., Pólvora, Rey Escorpión
Straight falls. Revolucionarios attacked Porky before the match and were DQed for excessive violence before the match, then rallied back to win with Porky sitting on Escorpion. Porky made the hair match challenge after (while also asking for vale tudo rules!) Unexpectedly violent match, good both as a build up and as a match in itself.
5) Averno, Ephesto, Mephisto b Máscara Dorada, Mistico, Valiente
Mistico had Averno in La Mistico, but Mephisto broke it up with a dropkick and the rudos beat Mistico for the win. Seems like it sets up a title match but no mention in the results.
6) Atlantis, La Máscara, Marco Corleone b Felino, Mr. Niebla, Negro Casas
La Mascara replaced Shocker. Appears tecnicos took 2/3. Atlantis beat Mr. Niebla, then went after his mask.

AAA responded to Dr. Wagner Jr.’s rant last night, and the story is not a big surprise: Dr. Wagner Jr. agreed to having AAA trademark his name in the US when he was on better terms with the company, then had had his falling out with them, and AAA says they decided not to go farther on based on their problems with Wagner. AAA says the trademark has not been officially registered at this point (so I’m either not understanding what I’m seeing on the trademark search or it’s not very clear on that point) and it does not sound like there’s any plans to pursue it. They are willing to give Wagner whatever they’ve gained so far, as long as Wagner pays them back for whatever fees and costs AAA has had to pay so far. Wagner has refused. It also does not sound like there are any plans to create an AAA Dr. Wagner or anything like that – the last line is very clear about respecting intellectual property rights, which relates back to the Alebrije/Psicosis/Histeria situations.

Ultimately, if AAA is to be believed, the trademark will be listed back as dead/invalid at some point and no one will specifically own the rights to the name and Wagner can do whatever he want. Which is what he likes to do best!

Terra’s rebroadcast of the Anniversary show was really nice, to a point. The entire show was shown in the new HD quality level, which is a treat. However, the Volador versus Sombra main event was not aired. It appeared the broadcast was just a playlist in a VLC Player, with each match as it’s own (MP4) file. The file names were displayed on screen before each match. As soon as the file for the trios title match ended, Terra broadcast a still of an orange traffic cone that’s very familiar to VLC users. This lasted a while before switching to the Terra logo and signing off. Not sure, but it looked to me like a technical screw up – someone didn’t have the playlist set up correct or a file in the right place – and not Terra skipping the main event on purpose. Hopefully they’ll reair just the match or upload it elsewhere so we can have that high quality version.

Lineups

Toryumon Mexico (SUN) 10/06/2013 Sala de Armas Magdalena Mixhuca
1) Graco El Gladiador & Leonidas vs Super Peluche & Yoruba
2) Anime & Babe Star vs Crazy Star (F) & Felina Metalica
3) Douki & Hanaoka vs Infierno & Krator and Hacha & Piel Roja
4) Magnus, Oro Jr., Super Ciudadano vs Akuma, Cholo, Patan
5) Atlantis & Último Dragón vs Gran Guerrero & Último Guerrero

Today! Always amazed when I can actually track down a lineup for these shows. Ultimo Dragon was interviewed in the most recent SuperLuchas saying lucha libre needed new guys to step up, but didn’t mention any names that might be hopes for the future. That’s kind of odd for a guy who is training people and running shows with young people, but about right for Ultimo Dragon.

IWRG (THU) 10/10/2013 Arena Naucalpan
1) Seiya vs Araña de Plata Jr.
2) Alfa & Omega vs Fulgor I & Fulgor II
3) Centvrión, Emperador Azteca, Golden Magic vs Alan Extreme, Canis Lupus, Freyzer
4) Trauma I, Trauma II, Veneno vs Oficial 911, Oficial AK47, Oficial Fierro
5) Hijo de Pirata Morgan, Pirata Morgan, Toscano vs El Hijo del Medico Asesino, Hijo del Dr. Wagner Jr., X-Fly

Better IWRG main event is the semifinal. Tercera could be a lot of fun. Segunda could be a lot of fun for the Fulgors, not so much the new brothers.

Freyzer is probably supposed to be Freyser, though if they can’t bother to spell it right on the poster then I won’t either. Why IWRG keeps using the name and character he gave up long ago is a mystery.

Castillo del Terror is back in 11/03.

CMLL (FRI) 10/11/2013 Arena Mexico
1) Astral & Eléctrico vs Pequeño Olímpico & Pierrothito
2) Goya Kong, Marcela, Silueta vs Dallys la Caribeña, Princesa Blanca, Princesa Sugheit
3) Ángel de Oro, Fuego, Stuka Jr. vs Ephesto, Gran Guerrero, Vangellys
4) Máscara Dorada vs Averno [lightning]
5) Máximo, Super Porky, Valiente vs Comandante Pierroth, Dragón Rojo Jr., Rey Escorpión
6) La Sombra, Marco Corleone, Rush vs Rey Bucanero, Tama Tonga, Terrible

Tama’s back, Silueta is back, Pierrothito is back! Lightning match looks very good. Rey Escorpion versus Porky continues in the fifth. Bucanero & Tonga face one of their upcoming tag team title challengers, but will Rush and Sombra still be getting along after Tuesday’s match?

ERLL (SUN) 10/13/2013 Arena Coliseo Monterrey

4th Anniversary show, which also honors former promoter Lila Cavazos, who passed away 10 years ago this April. Volador goes back to his old name (and probably his old mask) for one night.

LA Park wins $$$, Dos Caras to retire, AAA owns Wagner name?, CMLL tonight

RCH (THU) 10/03/2013 Arena Naucalpan [Black Terry Jr. (flickr), IWRG]
1) Fulgor I & Fulgor II b Látigo & Mr. Leo and Atomic Star & Electro Boy
2) Decnnis & Relámpago (Coahuila) b Centvrión & Golden Magic and Arez & Impulso
3) Apolo Estrada Jr., Bracito De Plata, Rossy Moreno b Bugambilia, Lady Apache, Voladorcito
Listed as Bracito de Oro, turned out to be Bracito de Plata, might actually be the same guy. Whoever, he helped Rosy reverse a Lady Apache roll up for the win.
4) Hijo de Pirata Morgan, Trauma I, Trauma II DQ Eterno, Hijo del Dr. Wagner Jr., Zumbido
Tecnicos took 1/3. Wagner blatantly fouled Hijo de Pirata for the DQ.
5) LA Park b Dr. Wagner Jr., Canek [50000]
winner gets 50000MX ($3850 USD). Usual crowd brawling, mask pulling and fouls. Wagner beat Canek with a mask pull and a foul (after Canek had started it), then Canek pulled Wagner’s mask to set up LA Park’s pin. 50000 peoss to LA Park.

Missed opportunity: I thought “bag of money” was the way to go, but they should’ve given LA Park one of those giant checks after the win. Or had it before the match with no name on it so people could clock each other with it. (I’m not sure how they were awarded the money.)

Dos Caras Senor to retire

This week’s SuperLuchas magazine (#510) includes an interview with Hijo de Dos Caras and Dos Caras Sr. It starts off introducing the new son, but turns into the older Dos Caras announcing his plans to retire. Luchadors claiming they’re going to retire then never actually retiring is almost as old as lucha libre, but Dos Sr. seems credible about this. His plan is for five matches – one in November, one 12/04 in Korakuen Hall in Japan, then 3 matches early in 2014 in Monterrey, Tijuana and Mexico City and that’s it – he specifically doesn’t want to be like other luchadors who do retirement matches in every arena in every town. He plans on continuing to work out, because it’s important, but no more lucha libre after those matches.

There’s also an article where Black Shadow Jr – the third different one! – says he’s going to retire soon. That one is not as concerning.

Dr. Wagner’s US trademark

Last night, Dr. Wagner Jr. ranted angrily to the press about AAA stealing his name. Jose Manuel Guillen of Tercera Caida and Black Terry Jr. have video has a version too. It’s tough to take Dr. Wagner at his word when he’s told tall tales about returning to CMLL and mask matches with LA Park this year, so I did some research. It turns out the name is actually trademarked. (You can find the US Trademark search here.) These are all the AAA US trademarks I could find via the online trademark search, sorted by the date they were filed

Filed 12/26/2002
AAA – then the logo again on 12/22/05

Filed 02/01/2005
Mascara Sagrada

Filed 02/17/2005
LLL Mexico logo, then again on 02/20/2013

Filed 09/08/2005
Psicosis – then again on 02/20/12

Filed 10/01/2009
Mascartia Sagrada – lists 06/30/1995 as first usage, and 07/15/1995 as “first use in commerce”, then filed again on 02/25/2010 for more items

Filed 12/19/2012
“It’s not wrestling, it’s Lucha Libre” – tag line used with the video game

Filed 02/11/2013
Cibernetico
Dr. Wagner – (not Dr. Wagner Jr, FWIW)
La Parka – also tradermarked by Lucha Libre USA, but that trademark is listed as abadonded
El Mesias
Monsther Clown – probably why they’ve drifted back to the h spelling again.
Murder Clown
Psycho Clown
Sexy Star

There’s also a Latin Lover trademark filed on 12/07/2005 that was marked as canceled just this past August 23rd.

The wrestlers are tradermaked in categories specifically for usage in wrestling and also to sell merchandise. It looks like AAA just trademarked a bunch of their top people in a bunch, but the timing is funny. Dr. Wagner was in his weird contractual limbo with AAA by February; they didn’t know if he was coming back at that point. It’s possible these were in process when Wagner and AAA were still friends and didn’t get done until much later. It’s also possible Wagner unknowingly signed something that gave AAA permission to trademark his name in the US (maybe back around the video game time), though that seems unlikely with Wagner.

It’s also unclear how much of an effect this actually has. The original Psicosis trademark was timed to stop him from using the name with WWE, but that doesn’t seem to have actually worked. It’s unlikely to stop Dr. Wagner Jr. from using that name on any indy show in the US and it’s possible he could get a lawyer to remove AAA’s claim, though that’s expensive and annoying and enough to make you angrily rant into the camera about it after a show.

Marisela Pena says they’ll explain this (at some point.) The reasoning AAA would do something like this in general makes a lot of sense when you start rooting around the database. Previously, Lucha Libre USA had trademarked terms including Konnan, Octagon, La Parka, El Mesias, Dr. Wagner, Cibernetico, and Chessman, but those are all listed as DEAD since 2010 and are no longer valid. (They don’t even own the trademark for Lucha Libre USA any more, but they do own Lucha Libre.) It was probably a pain to have someone else own the rights to AAA characters before, and this is about making sure it doesn’t happen again.

Other News

I was on Joe Versus the World yesterday. It was fun!

CMLL is again giving free tickets to today’s show in exchange for hurricane relief donations. Atlantis, La Mascara, Maximo, Brazo de Plata, Brazo de Oro, Goya Kong and guests Aramis, Muneca de Plata, and Brazo de Oro Jr. will be helping with the collections.

Today’s main event is Peste Negra versus Marco, Shocker and Atlantis. There’s nothing really ongoing with that match, but there are a couple stories in the undercard. The Rey Escorpion versus Brazo de Plata feud will continue in the fourth match, Dallys might finally turned ruda in the women’s match, and 2012 En Busca de un Idolo winner Titan faces 2013 En Busca de un Idolo winner Vangellys.

Puebla Express says the opening match for Heroes Inmortales is the usual Relevos AAA style match. Teams are listed as Faby Apache, Elegido, Pimpinela, and Octagoncito versus Mary Apache, Cuervo, Mamba and Mini Abismo Negro. It’s possible the match could be changed with Cuervo replacing Escoria in the tag team title match, but we at least can figure on Cuervo being on the card for interference at some point.

Televix Entertainment says they’ll be distributing CMLL in Latin America. It’s said to be a one hour TV show with occasional larger specials. Given CMLL’s amount of programing, this could just about anything, but that sounds most like the Fox Sports show. No idea what countries. Televix’s website lists other products they handle – including Strawberry Shortcake. She gets around. I think the take home here is fans in El Salvador may get to see CMLL on their TV and people on YouTube might have someone new filing copyright claims.

Lucha Libre in Japan

Tanahashi is putting the CMLL Universal Championship on the line in his IWGP Heavyweight Championship title match, which is a bit amazing since the CMLL belt has never been defended as a title belt before (even though it looks like one.) It’s just been a trophy shaped as a belt. Anyway, Tanahashi is winning and some people will be very sad.

pictures from my Mexico City trip

I’ve put photos sets from my trip to Mexico City a couple weeks ago over on Flickr. I generally took less photos as the week went on, as my camera phone filled up and I decided the photos I did take weren’t coming out too well. But it’s still good enough for website content. (It’s also good for jogging my memory before the podcast I’m doing tonight.)

We went to Arena Naucalpan on 09/12. It was not a greatly attended show, but it was one of my favorites. I appreciated getting to see the fabled Corona coolers and AYM technology in person. The Fresero dollars paid for most of the rest of the trip. I illegally recorded video of Sky Angel vs Fulgor II and then uploaded it to the internet, which is vastly out of character for me.

Before the Anniversary show on Friday, we walked the 80 Years of Lucha Libre photo exhibit. (That’s where we ran into the Super Libre crew, identified by the Canal58 channel jacket.) This is where I struggled with the concept of standing in front of objects when taking photos of them, leaving you with a lot of angled shots. I really liked this Oro Jr. picture. This Hector Garza one is very good too, especially with Averno’s expression.

My picture count says I took 600 photos of the Anniversary show, though Flickr has says only 541. I’m not sure why. Either way, I kind of fell in love with the burst/multiple photo option on my camera, then regretted it later when I have many photos of people getting ready to do moves, and not much space left on my phone. Still, it got me a nice Blue Panther dive photo. This shot of Volador before the match looks nice. The way I put my thumb on the camera accidentally nicely framed this post match shot. I also have a quick video of what the building looked like right after the main event finish. And a workable unmasked Volador photo I could’ve used that night.

We went to Expo Mascaras on Saturday. Ice Killer’s gimmick table was the last one I saw and my favorite one. We also want to the IWL show, where I took as many photos of stuff outside the arena as I did of the show. (This is a real bull who lost the bull fight.) The ATM outfits are weird.

We went to Coliseo Coacalco on Sunday, even though it turned out there was no show. The day looks a lot better in pictures than in real life. The area behind the tarp here is the dressing room. People can watch the event from a nearby rooftop, which sounds vaguely familiar to me.

I took a lot of tourist photos on Tuesday. (I had cleared off a lot of stuff from my phone at this point, and wasn’t scribbling notes about shows.) The photos actually turned on really well from both the anthropology museum and the historic district. Maybe it’s easier to take photos of things which aren’t moving? The historic district was amusing for the very old buildings where very modern businesses operate now. You can see the removal of the bleachers from the Zocalo from the previous day’s military parade as well as the security to block people from getting in. No one was getting in to run any show any time soon.

Going backwards to finish up, I took photos of the inside of Arena Mexico and the new mural. The timeline of masks really fascinated me, since it appears to be a historic record of everyone who’s lost a mask in this building (at least after a certain point.) I haven’t figured out everyone, but maybe we can. Starting from the far right, and with a lot of overlap.

I had to distort this one to make it viewable, and even then it’s pretty iffy. Going right to left, going backwards in time. Namajague is the newest mask, preceded by Mercurio, Rey Cometa, Aereo, Goya Kong (difficult!), Averno, Olimpico (Pequeno Black Warrior skipped), Bracito de Oro (out of order), Fabian el Gitano, Felino, Tigre Blanco, Rosa Negra.

masks15

(R to L) Rosa Negra, Villano V, Shockercito, Goddess, Blue Panther, Mictlan, Hijo del Lizmark

masks14

(R to L) Goddess, Blue Panther, Mictlan, Hijo del Lizmark, Black Warrior, ????, Pantera, Amapola, Universo 2000, Angel Azteca

masks13

(R to L and really blurry) – Amapola, Universo 2000, Angel Azteca, Violencia, Bulldog (Pequeno Violencia skipped), Solar II (Poder Mexica skipped?), Veneno? (or Mascara Magica?), Hijo del Gladiador, Villano III, Shocker, Mr. Niebla IWRG, Scorpio Jr.

masks12

(R to L) Bulldog, Solar II, Veneno?, Hijo del Gladiador, Villano III, Shocker, Mr. Niebla IWRG, Scorpio Jr. (Halcon Negro skipped?), Mr. Aguila, Steel

masks11

(R to L) Mr. Niebla IWRG, Scorpio Jr.,  Mr. Aguila, Steel, Bronco (Guerrero de la Muerte skipped?), Kahoz, ???, El Boricua (out of order?), Sombra 90s (Coliseo), Justiciero?, Mano Negra, Ciclon Ramirez

masks10

(R to L) ricua (out of order?), Sombra 90s (Coliseo), another Supremo? (should be Justiciero), Mano Negra, Ciclon Ramirez,  Supremo I, Love Machine, Anibal, Gallo Tapado (Konnan skipped!), Huracan Ramirez II, Kung Fu, Cien Caras (Ninja Turtles AND Animals skipped), ? (and now we’re in the period where I won’t know many), and after that, I’m not really sure. All Star should probably be one of the three left (yellow, white, orange) but doesn’t quite match up with any of them.

masks09

The spade mask is As Charro. The devil mask is probably Belcebu. I don’t see MS-1, who should be in this group. The green mask needs to be brought back ASAP. This is also where some non colored masks start appearing; not sure if they were trying to reproduce an effect or they just didn’t have a color reference.

masks08

A better look at the last few. The Egyptian mask is cool.

masks07a

That looks like MS1. He lost his mask two years before Cien Caras and there’s an awful lot of masks in between.

masks07

Another shot of pretty much the same masks.

masks06

The one in the middle is Lawrence of Arabia, who lost his mask in 1980. Perhaps he’s the old guy hanging out with the Tuareg! The mask on the far left is Sangre Chicana, who lost his mask in 1977. Dragon Rojo Sr.’s mask should be somewhere in between – maybe the white and red one?

masks05

El Halcon (77) is right next to Sangre Chicana. One of those Green masks is El Faraon. I’m not sure if the space indicates something, or was just room for a mask that wasn’t painted yet.

masks04

I had no idea SuperLucha’s Dr. Mascara (red, center) had lost his mask in Arena Mexico! That changes things. Many doctors and nurses around this time, and the end of the Espantos.

masks03

More Espantos, but it’s also at that point where the mural turns into something else – unless Santo & Rayo de Jalisco lost their masks without anyone ever finding out until just now. It’s a strange placement, because here are still more masks that people look before them.

masks02

There’s Black Shadow right near the beginning of this blurry mess, and some other less well known guys. There are faintly painted masks to the left of him, which more look like the first masks ever used than necessarily ones which people lost.

masks01
And the mask time line mural ends – or starts! with prehispanic masks like the ones I saw at the anthropology museum. The bigger mural above also connects that culture to the lucha tradition.

Dr. Wagner Jr. wins IWL Heavyweight Title, Arez loses his hair, RCH, hurricane relief

IWL (TUE) 10/01/2013 Arena Aficion [Criterio Hidalgo, Estrellas del Ring, Tercera Caida]
2) Arceus b Loco Max, Shadow, Arkanos, Corcel Infernal, Fly Star, Fly Metalik
Arceus did a dive off the upper level.
3) Medics III b Kid Jaguar [IWL LIGHT]
Medics III kept the title.
4) Fresero Jr. b ? [Copa Función Estelar IWL]
No list of participants
5) Aeroboy, Demente Extreme, Pesadilla, Violento Jack b Ángel o Demonio, León Rojo, Ovett, Perico
6) Carta Brava Jr., Cerebro Negro, Fantasma de la Ópera b Súper Muñeco, Súper Pinocho, Súper Ratón [WWA TRIOS]
Secta Negra’s second defense. Super Muneco had the winning pin but the referee would not allow it because he had someone else’s mask on (???)
7) Dr. Wagner Jr. b LA Park, Canek, Villano IV, Super Crazy [IWL HEAVY]
LA Park’s falls in first defense. LA Park beat V4 with a backcracker, Canek beat Super Crazy (added to the match) with a press slam. LA Park & Canek worked together, than turned one each other and Canek was eliminated. Wagner beat Park to win the title.

Everyone gets a chance to be champion.

There’s no IWRG show tonight – RCH takes over Arena Naucalpan again for a show with indy lucahdors. The main event is Canek vs LA Park vs Dr. Wagner Jr. for money. (More than usual, I guess.) It’s the fifth variation of LA Park vs Dr. Wagner in the last seven days. AYM says they’re airing a show at 8:30pm tonight, so the RCH may air live. It is not on LAS.

Last night’s Tercera Caida show has results from more sure, including the Arena Ichiban Fusion show on Sunday. Stukita won the Norte Lightweight Championship from Jerry Brown in a three way. In the main event, Apolo Estrada Jr. defeated Arez in a hair versus hair match. Match featured blood, a Chico Che surprise appearance, a Chico Che rudo turn, the third fall going to a double count out, the fourth tiebreaker fall going to a double pin, and finally Apolo won.

CMLL luchadors pose with the donations they received for hurricane relief on Tuesday. A lot of them are in OXXO bags; that’s a convenience store that is part of the same city block as Arena Mexico, so either they donated some bags or people just went around the corner to buy the items to give them away. CMLL says they we’re working on more plans to help the hurricane victims.

DTU’s show tonight (at midnight) looks like it’ll have their show from Arena Solidaridad in August, which included Tomahawk T.T. vs Drastick Boy for the Alto Impacto title.

La Mascara says the match versus Sombra & Atlantis will be tough and different because it’s tecnico vs tecnico. Mascara notes he faced Atlantis a lot when he was a rudo, but Atlantis was also his partner back when he won the Gran Alternativa.

LuchaWorld has 40 to 31 on the 2012 top 100 countdown and KrisZ’s news update.

Lucha Libre in Japan

This may barely count, but Mr. 450 Hammet from Chicago lucha libre promotions (and Puerto Rico more importantly) is on AJPW’s next tour. Random but great for him.
