Recapped: 06/09/2019

(11:44, Big Mami Gori Bomb Lady Maravilla, ok, 00:24:32)

Keyra & Tessa Blanchard beat Faby Apache & Lady Shani

Golden Magic & Myzteziz Jr. beat Australian Suicide & Villano III Jr.
(12:45, Golden Magic moonsault slam Villano III Jr., great, 01:15:21 )

Laredo Kid © beat Hijo Del Vikingo for the AAA World Cruiserweight Championship
(18:13, Laredo Fly, excellent, 01:38:51)

Aerostar, Drago beat Daga, Monsther Clown
(11:38, Aerostar code red Monsther Clown, good, 02:07:49)

Rey Escorpión, Taurus, Texano Jr. beat Dr. Wagner Jr., Puma, Psycho Clown
(18:40, Rey Escorpion spear thru a table Psycho Clown, good, 02:30:05)

What happened:

lots of usage of the ramp tonight

Rey Escorpion used as La Hiedra distraction to unmask Psycho Clown, then speared him thru a table for the win.

Keyra challenged to Shani to a title match, though she took too long to do it so Shani just stole the mic to accept it for Verano de Escandalo. They brawled, as did Tessa & Keyra.

Big Mami demanded Nino Hamburguesa choose between her and Lady Maravilla. Before he could, Daga attacked him with a chair. Daga’s reasoning was he was upset he wasn’t a champion but people like Hamburguesa & Mami were. Daga went to hit Mami with a chair, but Hamburguesa made the save. Tessa came out to help Daga and Drago eventually showed up to clear the ring.

Konnan appeared to promote the Young Bucks/Lucha Brothers match at the start of the match.

Thoughts:

creative use of the ropes

I’m switching to the English feed starting with this broadcast. They’ve made some improvements, I never had a problem with the stream dropping frames, and I figure this is the stream people are going to be asking me about next week. One of the announcers noted the pre-match attack was the same Mercenarios we see every week, more in frustration in the rudos cheating than my usual frustration with seeing the same AAA main event style weekly. The hot crowd drove this to be better than usual. Los Mercenarios all being together as one unit, which we haven’t really gotten to see since the changes, helped too. They come off as easily more energetic than the old configuration, with La Hiedra interfering fitting right into the AAA chaos. The crowd was way into Dr. Wagner (and chanting for Silver King), and maybe that helped motivate him to take the painful looking Samoan drop to the floor thru a table. Rey Escorpion actually beating Psycho Clown makes me think that might go somewhere someday and was helped by being the only really shady ending on the show.

There was no way for Drago & Aerostar versus Daga & Monsther Clown match to follow what had come right before. It definitely hurt the reactions of the match, but it came together for a good match with a few good moves. Aerostar & Drago had cool offense set up by the rudos. Monster Clown looked slower than his previous matches Daga was sharp. This would’ve worked better in a different context; maybe the Konnan promo would’ve been better to break up the matches here.

Laredo Kid and Hijo del Vikingo had one of the best matches of the year. It was an outrageous battle of big offense, both well timed and well executed. They pulled off creative moved and they built towards a dramatic end where every pinfall seemed like it could be it for minutes. We have no idea how good Hijo del Vikingo can be. There were spots in this match, the springboard twist headscissors among them, that just have never been done before and make me wonder about even crazier spots left to come. Laredo Kid has long been capable of top flight matches when given the opportunity, he is going to always rise to the challenge of a double springboard setting up to a Spanish Fly. Vikingo is still a kid, a kid who showed spectacular ability in tags and trios but hadn’t really put it together in a singles match yet. Vikingo absolutely did here. Laredo Kid should be given lots of credit for being right opponent, but this came off feeling like another step in Vikingo’s ascension. It is impossible to know how high he can go.

how is this possible

Magic/Myzteziz vs Suicide/Villano was a superb AAA action match, with all the big moves you could want. Golden Magic & Myzteziz are a great team, who knew. Both guys were consistently good during this match and had a surprising array of team moves. Myzteziz almost lost it on his big ramp assisted springboard headscissors but kept enough of it together. Villano III Jr. used that ramp in every way he could, looking like much more of a force than usual. Suicide had some crazy dives and crazy not-dives onto his feet. These guys came together great and it never slowed down. It would be nice to see Villano III Jr. get a win at some point but no other complaints.

The women’s match was disappointing early on, seemingly like they all weren’t on the same page on sequences. It got much better when Faby & Keyra were left in by themselves, with some intricate counters and cradles that looked impressive. Keyra did well in setting up her title match with a tricky pin and the three way they’re going to next (at least for the moment.) Tessa didn’t make as strong as an impression as her previous matches but it wasn’t meant for her this time.

The mixed tag feud was pretty not great for the first half and picked up a little bit in the latter moments. There have been more complete matches with this feud, and this one was heavy on selling the Hamburguesa indecision over the action. It was successful in that but limited the match. Baby Xtreme had a couple of good spots with La Hiedra but didn’t get to do his dive and didn’t make much of an impression. Aero 2000 Jr. did more but meant less.

(7:10, ok, VideosOficialesCMLL)

La Bestia Del Ring & Rush beat Flyer & Volador Jr. in a Copa Dinastia semifinal
(5:36, ok, VideosOficialesCMLL)

What happened:

I don’t know why he went for a pin

Rush & La Bestia del Ring won this block of Copa Dinastia.

Kawato attacked Black Panther before their match officially started, but the feud wasn’t much of the match.

Thoughts:

Copa Dinastia was worse the sum of the matches. Euforia & Soberano were the most interesting team and the most interested team and were dismissed after one match. Rush & Bestia treated this as a normal Tuesday match. Volador treated this like Puebla. They saw it as just another miscellaneous CMLL tournament not worth getting excited for, and a final with La Bestia del Ring does not seem like something many will be excited to see. All the matches were OK at best, but stopping watching this show at the Templario/Cavernario match is really best.

I came into this show more tired than usual and I’m not sure if that’s why the matches didn’t seem to connect with me than usual. The last trios match of the night was all the usual bigger match spots from these wrestlers but it felt more like going thru those motions than something that came together as exciting. Gilbert got re-established as a big guy who can slap around the likes of Angel de Oro, but just slipping him in place doing Guerrero team spots felt off. Ultimo Guerrero’s superpower to reverse everyone’s finisher into a cradle remains strong.

Panther tope

Templario & Cavernario turned into an unexpected dive exhibition for an extended part of the middle of the match. The dives looked really cool, Templario nailed his while coming like an inch from hitting his head on the apron. This was overall Templario’s best performance in one of these so far, showing good offense and feeding into Cavernario’s counters. The crowd loves Cavernario at this point and they should, and his way into the cavernaria at the end was excellent. They probably have a better match in them if they’re not rushing to get done in 10 minutes.

The third match didn’t come together fully. Audaz got in a slightly higher spot than usual and had a hard night. Some of it was his fault, some of it was the rudos not giving proper help, some of it was production not showing the moves well. It didn’t add up to a great presentation. He still got the win but it is not a positively memorable performance. The rudos weren’t great in general, though that is about what is expected out of them.

I didn’t think much of the Panther match for the first two falls, outside of Virus being awesome in submitting Blue Sr. quickly to win the second fall. (Blue Panther doesn’t protect himself much in the layout of these matches nowadays.) The third fall was a lot of fun, since Blue Panther Jr. has a lot of impressive looking power moves he can do now that are different from the rest of the show. I am not sure why Black Panther is doing a train horn pull motion before his dropkick but at least he’s doing something. This was the most effective the brothers have looked in a while.

The opener was a regular level match that went a little bit crazy in the last couple of minutes. The crowd had loudly turned on the match a fall and a half earlier and it didn’t win them back but the thought was nice. Too much people standing around waiting to get hit and Electricochecking behind himself before finishing a springboard. Grako doing an elbow drop to the floor and covering was great comedy.

Cavernario gets a reversal at the last second

That’s a lot of shows

A strong week even if a lot of stuff is just good. Mistico vs Cavernario was really a lot of fun. The AAA TV tapings were generally good if generally plenty. And there was an oddly good Tuesday show too.

brother on brother violence

Recapped: 06/01/2019

I’m continuing to catch up by picking full shows to go thru. All matches are from Coliseo Coacalco.

Matches:

Hijo De Dr. Pólux & Murciélago Plateada vs Alas de Acero & Iron Kid and Multifacetico (Puebla) & Prayer
(12:23, good,
+LuchaTV)

I’m pretty sure you have to have a death wish to wrestle in multiman lucha libre openers nowadays. This was present here, especially in some of the dives at the end. There was some interesting back and forth early – Prayer continues to show interesting counters – and then this got all sorts of sloppy for a while. There was big moves mixed in, but it took the strong ending to really save this for me. Everyone has talent, their ideas are just ahead of their execution at times.

there are a dozen crazy spots but I also liked this escape

Dragón Bane vs Hijo de Canis Lupus
(12:01, great,
mluchatv)

Hijo de Canis Lupus had a better match with Dragon Bane than Soberano, so I think that makes Lupus the better luchador? The brothers brought the intensity to this match, especially when they spilled outside and thru the crowd. The referee seemed to lose the ability to count to 20 but that was plenty of okay with how the brawl was going. There’s the usual problem with doing so much that it loses it effectiveness with these two – they didn’t need two more back and forth strike exchanges – but it felt like a hard fight. They felt close to getting to another level here.

people aren’t in a hurry to move in Coacalco

Virus vs Flamita
(8:56, great,
mluchatv)

Flamita & Virus both can mail in some indie matches when they’re not in the right mood. They were in the right mood to face each other. This isn’t as much tricky Virus submissions as Flamita drawing into a speedy big move battle. Flamita strung together moves beautifully; the handspring elbow setting up a standing shooting star press was just perfect. Virus’ shots looked strong and both guys were really sharp. This match had a lot to it and still flew by.

no more headscissors for Virus

Súper Crazy vs Aeroboy
(9:40, good,
mluchatv)

Super Crazy are not particularly interesting things in general in 2019. This one works, due to a helpful crowd, some strong work by Aeroboy, and a match laid out for Super Crazy’s strengths. The brawling keeps the crowd into the match, while not asking Crazy to go too fast for too long. They were violent enough to make the brawl work, and they had some creative spots. Aeroboy had one notable slip on the springboard cutter, but made it work, and had a pretty strong match otherwise. The fans were more into Crazy and he gave them his trademark spots in a way where they were probably totally satisfied.

Aeroboy clears the first row nicely

Aramis vs Negro Casas
(5:35, good,
mluchatv)

Aramis & Negro Casas was short, even by the standards of the rest of the show, but they tried to make it work by going all out from the beginning. This was a match of Negro Casas taking moves you wouldn’t expect him to take, and then slipping in a well-timed Canadian Destroyer. It was super generous of Casas to put Aramis over to such a degree, but it also came more of an exhibition of what Aramis could do than a close battle. The ending sequence was really good, and it helps Aramis stand out that his finish move is not another one of the same headdrops everyone is doing but instead a painful looking submission, but I wanted to like this match more than I actually did.

Aramis bomb

Arez vs Ricky Marvin
(7:40, great,
mluchatv)

A spectacular violent match for something in Coacalco that didn’t include chairs, or much on the outside at the all. Marvin going after Arez’s arm fiercely to start off didn’t set up a body part attack story, it instead set up a tone of both guys fighting like they absolutely hated each other and absolutely had to win. No one looks like they hit harder than a motivated Ricky Marvin. I was wincing for Arez during some of those slap exchanges. Marvin also has these overpowering bursts of speed that can wipe a person out and made the finish totally believable. Arez did a good of fighting for everything he got and coming off like a very worthy opponent who came up just short. I hope they came doing this match forever.

all that for a forearm to the face

Gato De Ecatepec vs Demus, mask vs hair
(12:38, good,
mluchatv)

What Happened:

This match is three falls for whatever reason.

Review: [good]

Gato is willing to get destroyed by bottles to the head and bleed a river. He just didn’t seem to be in Demus’ league during most of the match, and there was not enough they could do to make it appear close. The big dive run in the third fall was supposed to tease that possibility but didn’t work. Gato came up short on his first two topes, so much so that Demus made sure to wander very close to the ring on the third one. The fans being into the match because this has been a long-running feud helped a lot (and is why indies probably did more of them), but this is good for effort rather than something I think others strongly need to watch.

the horrified fan is best part

(
15:07 [2:13, 3:43, 9:11], 2/3 DQ, ok, VideosOficialesCMLL)

What happened:

Halcon Suriano is quick to holds as well

Los Ingobernables were DQed for excessive violence in the first fall of the main event. Rush faked a foul in the third fall to draw the win and set up a singles match for next week.

Star Jr. & Sagrado went to a time limit draw. Sagrado blocked a moonsault about twenty seconds before the time limit, then covered Star Jr. just as time expired. Star Jr. still immediately kicked out. Sagrado unmasked and powerbombed Star Jr. well after the time limit.

Thoughts:

The main event was not actively bad, but it was also pretty much a nothing match. Los Ingobernables weren’t strongly into the match and Atlantis was involved, so this wasn’t going to be much. The first two falls weren’t much, the third fall was long without being interesting and with a bad ending.

Audaz flip rana

I am often hard on Audaz. I think it’s the cross-promotion comparisons; the AAA young flyers are having good/great matches fairly often and Audaz is in a lot of forgettable matches. The AAA high flyers are also working with great bases, while Audaz did a flip rana onto to Universo 2000 Jr. here. There’s got to be some allotment for degree of difficulty. Tiger was much more Audaz’s speed and those two have the best chemistry together. Maya & Panther seemed to take a step back to let Audaz do his stuff, and his stuff looked as good as it ever has here. The finish was neat, a smart reversal that only happens with Blue Demon. This was much better than a usual Tuesday match, and it was no surprise they were still picking up money while the next match came out.

The lightning match was Star Jr.’s best match in sometime. His big dives, both to the ramp and to the floor, looked out of control and yet really cool. Sagrado kept up with Star Jr.’s offense well while still looking sharp in his own moments. There were a couple of good near endings near the end, especially the Spanish Fly that could’ve ended it. The match ending indecisively with no plan to follow up is disappointing, but a standalone good lightning match is still a good lightning match.

Is Sonic the new Camaleon or the new Fresbee? He’s better than the openers but he’s small so he’s never escaping them (or being booked more than twice a month), so I guess it comes down to him forming his own lucha libre promotion or not.

Niebla Roja & Terrible advance to the tournament final.

Triton seems to pick up a leg injury in the closing moments of the segunda, though he still lands the 450 splash fine.

Thoughts:

Templario

Seven thoughts on this week’s tournament, a series of nothing matches.

  • The brief moment where it seemed as though Volcano was going to beat Sanson was sad. Luciferno had some chemistry with Audaz and no one else did. In retrospect, I wonder if they got yelled at for going over five minutes when no one else outside the final did.
  • Atlantis barely did anything in his match, even by 2019 Atlantis standards. It is a long car trip for standing on the sidelines of a two-minute match. This was barely OK by tournament standards
  • Esfinge looked like a dork trying and failing at being a cool guy coming to the ring and I felt bad for Templario.
  • Valiente seemed to invest himself the most in being rudo of anyone playing against type. It didn’t help the matches much but the effort was nice.
  • They didn’t trust Villano III to base for any of Audaz’s moves. And the quarterfinal match-up was very much not over for whatever reason. Thought Caristicio winning would’ve led into a hard tease of Caristico vs Mistico but it never gets brought up.
  • The Roja/Terrible vs Ephesto/Mistico match had a rare believable near fall in a tournament match when Ephesto landed the shoulderbreaker. I guess he totally would’ve won if he did it to Terrible instead of Niebla Roja.
  • The final is very slow as if they’re working to get to a certain time. The Caristico/Villano 3 rudos aren’t interested in using that time to do anything. The match never as much built as just meandered. Wins and losses don’t mean a great deal in CMLL and still it was hard to believe Hijo del Villano III was going to pin either of Niebla Roja & Terrible.
