06/01: Name changes, Mexico preview, Queretaro

CMLL (FRI) 06/01 Arena Mexico
1) Metalico, Neutron, Stuka Jr. vs Arkangel, Loco Max, Nitro
2) Flash, Sombra, Super Nova vs Goto, Ohara, Okumura
3) Villano III, Villano IV, Villano V vs Atlantis, Olimpico, Sangre Azteca
4) Dr. Wagner Jr., Marco Corelone, Mistico vs Damian 666, Hijo de Lizmark, Terrible
5) Mr. Aguila vs Sagrado [LdP, sf]

Ovaciones explains the odd names – some people are changing gimmicks

Tigre Metalico -> Metalico
Brillante -> Sombra

Previews: NotiMex, ESTO talks Villanos vs Atlanits (who’s cheerfully ignoring the mask challenges.)

Sagrado’s been making the media rounds – he’s got an interview with Ovaciones and another with ESTO today. He talks about Aguila (will be a challenge even distracted with Circus stuff), Mistico (if they fight, they fight, and then they’ll keep being friends after), and goals (revenge on Texano, a shot at Averno’s title.) Sagrado knows this is a big chance for him and he’s hoping he proves something to CMLL.

Got a feeling that Leyenda match will be bumped to semimain and the Mistico match will end up main event.

CMLL (TUE) 05/29 Arena Queretaro [Knotty @ elmartinete]
2) Perro del Ring & Skandalo b La Flecha & Ozuno
3) Dark Angel & Marcela b Amapola & Princesa Sujei
4) Corsario b Toro [hair]
5) Dos Caras Jr. & Marco Corelone DQ Hector Garza & Terrible

Garza and Terrible used illegal moves.

SLAM has a review of the Mucha Lucha a Go-Go book.

indy (WED) 05/30 Teatro del Puebla [Frontent Juarez]
1) Cassandro, Gallo Tapado Jr., Hijo del Santo b Blue Demon Jr., Green Danger, Sexy Francis

Article includes pictures and a 10 second clip of the match.

Local promoters in Monclova talked about starting every other week CMLL events on June 10th. They expect to run 10 this year. Wrestlers hyped for the show include Heavy Metal, Lizmark Jr., Black Warrior, Olimpico, Universo 2000, Hijo de Anibal, Angel Blanco Jr., and Hijo de Cien Caras Jr. I guess they’re going to set the bar low on the first show.

(esmas) A new Mexican restruant has been opened up in Madrid with a lucha libre theme.

El Sol de Tulancingo‘s preview of an AAA fair show hypes it up with a picture of Atlantis and Dr. Wagner. Oops.

The big controversy I’ve totally blown off this week is newspaper photos and passed around videos of masked wrestlers without masks. I’m not really surprised this sort of thing happens and I also don’t think it’s a very ethical thing to do. The newspaper photo was from the match, when Mistico got unmasked for a moment, so it’s not as though the photographer used illict means. It’s not as big a deal to me as the video (which is apparently someone walking around backstage with a camera), but there’s still something tabloid-ish about it.

Mostly, I can’t get worked up about this because the wrestlers themselves don’t seem to care that much. If you want CMLL TV for any length of them, you see plenty of masks untied and teasing of it coming off and times where it does come off and the face is plainly visibly to the crowd. (Oddly, the AAA guys are generally better about this, though La Parka Jr. does the spot a bit.) I’m not too interested – and haven’t sought out any of it for myself, so don’t look for links – in any of this because there isn’t much mystery in their faces.

04/15: new non-champion, Prision Fatal, bad week, CMLL DF lineups,

CMLL.com says Lady Apache has relinquished the Mexican National Women’s Championship. Apache had held the title since 2004, and thru multiple jumps between AAA and CMLL. Before Lady Apache’s first jump, it’d been AAA’s top year-round women’s title. Somewhere along the line, the belt became Lady Apache’s personal championship.

Historically, wrestlers are supposed to drop any National title they hold when they win a World championship in the same division. Lady Apache didn’t, and I presumed it was to guarantee she’d still have a belt when CMLL wanted to move their title onto someone else. Apache dropping the Mexican title would seem to mean she’s not worried about losing the CMLL belt for quite a while. I guess there’s a small chance the commission actually complained about the situation.

(That would also mean it may be a long time before Dark Angel wins a belt, since she wouldn’t be eligible for the Mexican title and would be aced out of the World title.)

CMLL says they’ll run a decision match for the belt in Arena Mexico soon.

According to Ovaciones, today’s IWRG main event is now a La Prision Fatal match, with 10 guys putting up their hair and masks:
– Astro Boy
– Okumura
– Masada
– Fantasma de la Opera
– Kai
– Yamato
– Dr. Cerebro
– Cerebro Negro
– Kraneo
– Esfinge

IWRG’s site is still down.

Ovaciones has a list of Bad Things That Happened This Week
04/07 – Referee El Acapulco died
04/07 – La Parka Jr.’s car accident
04/09 – Loco Max fractured two ribs in Puebla
04/12 – Dos Caras suffered a concussion
04/12 – when a dive goes wrong, Ultimo Dragoncito bruised his testicles
Next Tuesday, Puebla regular Asturiano is undergoing knee surgery.

The latest update on La Parka Jr., also from Ovaciones, is that he’s in Mexico city, and he’s got multiple fractures in his left arm and shoulder.

CMLL cards for the week

CMLL (TUE) 04/17 Arena Coliseo Lineup
1) Tiger Kid, Molotov vs Polvora, Vaquero
2) Marcela, Sahori, Luna Magica vs Hiroka, Amapola, Mima Shimoda
3) Felino, Maximo, Virus vs Ephesto, Misterioso Jr., Arkangel
4) Dr. Wagner Jr., Hijo de Lizmark, Negro vs Halloween, Mr. Aguila, Terrible
5) Alex Koslov vs Atlantis

Big match for Koslov. I don’t think Tiger Kid works a non-IWRG show without Felino. Assuming Tiger Kid is the same guy as Kid Tiger, which may kill me down the road.

CMLL (FRI) 04/20 Arena Mexico
1) Danger & Moltov vs Caligula & Messala
2) Leono, Valiente, Virus vs Euforia, Nosfearatu, Satanico
3) Alex Koslov, Blue Panther, Ultimo Dragon vs Misterioso II, Sangre Azteca, Tarzan Boy
4) Mistico, Negro Casas, Sagrado vs Averno, Ephesto, Mephisto
5) Marco Corleone, Rey Bucanero, Shocker vs Atlantis, Olimpico, Ultimo Guerrero

This could be an excellent gauge of High Society’s popularity. I figure there will be people leaving after the semimain. It’s Euforia and Nosferatu’s Arena Mexico debuts, and they may make it on CAN52 from here.

CMLL (SUN) 04/22 Arena Mexico – though CMLL doesn’t seem to note this site change on their site, so I dunno. Maybe next week instead?
1) Rayo Tapatio I & Rayo Tapatio II vs Polvora & Vaquero
2) Brillante, Tiger Metalico, Tigre Blanco vs Apocalipsis, Dr. X, Hooligan
3) Diana la Cazadora, Marcela, Sahori vs Amapola, Gatubela, Princesa Sujei
4) Hijo de Lizmark, Maximo, Texano Jr. vs Damian 666, Halloween, Mr. Aguila
5) Mistico, Rey Bucanero, Sagrado vs Atlantis, Black Warrior, Eclipse

That semimain is 5/6th rematch. I think it’s possible they switch Lizmark and Sagrado and go with a title match after the show tonight, but then again, this might be the Kids Show and why have the rudos get the win there? This is actually Diana la Cazadora’s first Arena Coliseo match, she’s worked a handful of Arena Mexico matches. I presume this Gatubela is the same women who was working in Arena Coliseo Monterrey in 2003 (and must’ve changed her name, since I haven’t seen her mentioned since – there’s a male wrestler also using that name.)

Brillante is the same guy as Brilliante Jr. in AOL – is he the same guy as the one in Xalapa? I have no idea of the geography of these things.

CMLL FSE has
04/08 Leono, Stuka Jr., Virus b Dr. X, Jeque, Loco Max
04/08 Damián 666, Halloween, Mr. Águila b Máximo, Satánico, Tigre Metálico

FSE is much quieter than the rest of my channels for some reason.

Accion

CMLL: Tag Team Titles. We get a wide shot of the stage side, and the building does lock packed. Mistico bleeds a bunch here – there’s not a focus on it, but the upper half of his mask is turned red.

AAA: Muerte/Kenzo vs Charly/Chessman – more tag team action than you can shake a stick at. Kenzo’s selling is unusual. Chessman embraces his inner high spot demon and tries a top rope corkscrew moonsault. That fails, and the Legion gets the heat. Konnan gets out of his wheelchair long enough to use a cane to cheat, but the Hell Brothers make a comeback and Charly wins with an inverted figure four on Kenzo.

AAA’s TV tapings start back up tonight with a TV in Veracruz. Note that the main event will obviously have to change with no Parka – maybe Intocable or Octagon in his spot?

03/01: Coliseo

CMLL

Brillante is on the left. It’s possible it’s Astro Boy, but I remember him thinner.

CMLL (TUE) 02/27 Arena Coliseo
1) Mini Violencia & Pierrothito b Bracito de Oro & Mini Olimpico
2) Moltov, Sensei, Sombra de Plata b Polvora, Vaquero, Zayco

4) Ephesto, Misterioso II, Okumura b Mictlan, Sagrado, Texano Jr.
5) Dos Caras Jr., Heavy Metal, Lizmark Jr. b Atlantis, Black Warrior, Pierroth

UDG (SUN) 03/04 Arena Coliseo
1) Bryan Lee, Kazuchika Okada, Toshiya Matsuzaki vs Arkangel, Daisuke Hanakoa, Negro Navarro
2) Mima Shimoda & Sahori vs La Nazi & Rosa Negra
3) Brazo de Oro, Brazo de Platino, La Mascara vs Hajime Ohara, Hiromi Horiguchi, Okumura
4) Tajiri vs Ultimo Dragon, Chad Malenko, Alex Koslov, Shocker, Pierroth Jr., Hirooki Goto, Veneno [NWA IJH, toreno]

CMLL (WED) 03/07 Centro de Convenciones Madero
1) India Sioux, Lady Apache, Marcela vs Amapola, Hiroka, La Nazi
2) Alex Koslov, La Mascara, Maximo vs Dr. X, Nitro, Sangre Azteca
3) Dos Caras Jr., Hijo de Lizmark, Shocker vs Atlantis, Olimpico, Ultimo Guerrero
4) Dr. Wagner Jr., Marco Corelone, Mistico vs Hector Garza, Hijo del Perro Aguayo, LA Park

indy (THU) 03/01 Arena Olimpico Laguna
1) Insolito & Rey Sagitario vs Diestro & Tempestad
2) Piloto Negro Jr. & Tigre Chon vs Diamante Negro & Mini Star
3) Piloto Negro & Super Star vs Conflictus & Piloto Suicida
4) America Salvaje & Espanto V vs Enrique Vera & Sexy Piscis

Negro Casas gets a shot at Tiger Mask IV’s NWA Junior Heavy Championship on 03/18 during his and Texano’s Japan tour. No chance? No chance. (strong style spirit)

Blog Critics Magazine has a very positive review of the new Mondo Lucha A Go Go book.

La Voz has an interview with the creators of lucha libre cartoon El Tigre, which premiers on Nickeloden this Saturday.

Filmeweb has an interview with Raúl Cuesta about his new short documentary – “Maximo”. Yea, that one. It sounds like it’s about how it’s like playing an exotico. The film is describe as “An intimate portrait of a Lucha Libre wrestler in Mexico who has developed a homosexual character in the ring, although he himself isn’t gay.” They got picked up by the San Diego Latin Film Festival – looks like it’ll air next Friday night.

02/23: Mexico, IWRG, Lineups, GdR

CMLL (FRI) 02/23 Arena Mexico [ova, superluchas, notimex]
1) Shockercito & Tzuki b Fire & Pierrothito
2) Amapola, Hiroka, Mima Shimoda b Dark Angel, India Sioux, Lady Apache
3) Averno, Mephisto, Sangre Azteca b Blue Panther, La Mascara, Maximo
4) Alex Koslov, Marco Corleone, Rey Bucanero DQ Atlantis, Ultimo Guerrero, Universo 2000
5) Hector Garza, Hijo del Perro Aguayo, Mr. Aguila b Lizmark Jr., Mistico, Volador Jr.

Misitico dove off the stage to start the main event, but Ocampo’s ecap makes it sound like he was pretty much on his own for the first two falls. Being Mistico, he won the second one. His partners got pinned in the third, not Mistico, and Mistico challenged Perro to a stips match, but they always do that.

Alex wore a sombero when he did his hat dance kicks. Marco tried to end Universo with a Tombstone once again, but the refs broke it up again, and Universo fouled him again. Ocampo suggests Marco could take over as lead tecnico should Mistico go to WWE; I like Marco too, but that seems a bit hopeful.

Amapola beat Lady Apache, so we’re heading back in that direction again – but women aren’t on any of the DF cards next week.

IWRG (THU) 02/22 Arena Naucalpan
1) Black Stone b Aguila Oriental
2) Yamato & Kai b Trauma I & Trauma II
3) Avisman, Camorra, Supremo Jr. b Bacteria, Freelnace, Kid Tiger
4) Dr. Cerebro, Heavy Metal, Trauma I DQ Kaz Hayashi, Nosawa, Pierroth
5) Suicida L Cerebro Negro, Electroshock, Villano III, El Dandy, Hijo del Diablo, Fantasma de la Opera, Bestia Salvaje [hair]

The lineup Ovaciones had on Thursday was completely wrong for the undercard – it was as IWRG initially had listed, with some subs. Black Pentagon didn’t lose his title in the main event because Black Pentagon wasn’t there – Cerebro Negro filled in for him, and took his ally Suicida’s hair. Kai and Yamato are trainees from whichever promotion Hayashi’s coming from.

Next week’s posted lineups:

CMLL (MON) 02/26 Arena Puebla
1) SWAT, the Tigre, Zigma vs Fuerza Chicana, Murcielago, Siki Ozama
2) Asturiano, Blue Center, Ultimo Dragoncito vs Mini Damian, Mini Halloween, Mini Mr. Aguila
3) Maximo, Metro II, Sagrado vs Emilio Charles Jr., Ohara, Okumura
4) Alex Koslov, Ultimo Dragon, Volador Jr. vs Efesto, Mephisto, Terrible
5) Averno vs Mistico [CMLL MIDDLE]

They did the main event in Queretaro last week, and Averno actually wins these matches. It’s all very odd.

CMLL (FRI) 03/02 Arena Mexico
1) Danger & Trueno vs Hooligan & Ramstein
2) Leono, Metro II, Virus vs Loco Max, Nitro, Okumura
3) Felino, Sagrado, Ultimo Dragon vs Eclipse, Misterioso II, Sangre Azteca
4) Heavy Metal, La Mascara, Mistico vs Averno, Ephesto, Mephisto
5) Alex Koslov, Marco Corleone, Rey Bucanero vs Atlantis, Ultimo Guerrero, Universo 2000

They’re going to tease Mistico/Averno this week.

CMLL (TUE) 02/27 Arena Coliseo
1) Bracito de Oro & Mini Olimpico vs Mini Violencia & Pierrothito
2) Moltov, Sensei, Sombra de Plata vs Polvora, Vaquero, Zayco
3) Brillante, Stuka Jr., Valiente vs Apocalipsis, Arkangel, Dr. X
4) Mictlan, Sagrado, Texano Jr. vs Ephesto, Misterioso II, Okumura
5) Dos Caras Jr., Heavy Metal, Lizmark Jr. vs Atlantis, Black Warrior, Pierroth

Who’s Brillante? There’s an Arena Xalapa undercarder by that name, so he’s probably a Skayde trainee. Sounds good to me.

CMLL (SUN) 03/04 Arena Coliseo
1) Mini Olimpico & Shockercito vs Fire & Sombrita
2) Fabian el Gitano, Starman, Tony Rivera vs Apocalipsis, Hooligan, Ramstein
3) Leono, Tigre Blanco, TIgre Metalico vs Hijo de Pierroth, Mogur, Mr. Mexico
4) Dos Caras Jr., Lizmark Jr., Marco Corleone vs Olimpico, Pierroth, Universo 2000
5) Mistico, Shocker, Volador Jr. vs Averno, Black Warrior, Mephisto

That’s quite the semimain.

GdR has
unmasked: Kempo Kid
02/18 Coliseo: Arkangel, Mogur, Nitro vs Leono, Texano Jr., Virus
02/08 Mexico: Averno, Ephesto, Mephisto b Blue Panther, Lizmark Jr., Satanico

Well, that’s strange, but good (I think). They didn’t repeat that segunda here – will/did they repeat it on FSE? They also have new wacky fall graphics, which are amusing at least the first time.
