Marca did not have this show listed as streaming, then streamed it anyway. I put up the video but haven’t watched it. Mephisto has challenged for a lot of titles but surprisingly not for this one.

This is a 99 pesos Ticketmaster show. Last week’s show was a good value. This one’s only for the completists or the people who love tournament blocks, who I don’t believe actually exist. The main event is a setup to a probable singles match on 12/25, the first two matches are setting up the 01/01 cage match and the rest is an unappealing group of teams.

Gran Alternativa Block B

Name CMLL Debut Past Gran Alternativas
Sangre Imperial 2016 debut
Diamond 2015 2018
Espanto Jr. 2012 2013, 2014, 2017, 2018, 2019
Halcon Suriano Jr. 2012 debut
Magnus 2011 2011
Disturbio 2009 2010, 2013
Electrico 2006 2010, 2013
Inquisidor 1998 2010

Inquisidor switched from Vaquerito/Vaquero to his current character in 2008. There’s a Vaquerito match in 1995, not sure if it’s this same guy, but it’s possible he’s been wrestling longer than veteran Atlantis Jr. has been alive. These guys, especially the last four guys on that list, are guys who debuted a decade ago, settled into a first/second match position without being pushed, and have fallen back into “novato” range because CMLL hasn’t debuted many new people and weirdly decided to run a 16 team tournament. It surprised me that Magnus hadn’t been in one of these since 2011, but that’s the irrelevant limbo he’s been in for most of his career. I’m confused why Enfermero Jr./Yago isn’t in this tournament among other names; maybe CMLL doesn’t realize they never aired him winning the secret Gran Alternativa last year.

Diamond & Titan seem like the best match for Euforia & Terrible. I have no problem with Titan in a final but I can’t see Diamond or Coyote getting pushed past the 3rd match, outside of more people disappearing or the winner suddenly getting much better. I rate Diamond the better of the two but there’s a lot of guys like Diamond ahead of him.

CMLL is promoting the 12/18 Lucha Memes show on social media, mentioning it on their website and having lots of the wrestlers as guests on Informa, which they haven’t done with third party shows in their venues prior. I wonder if we’ll see the same when ELITE comes back.

Carnicero Grimaldo (Roberto Grimaldo Martinez, 88) passed away on Tuesday, according to Box y Lucha. Grimaldo had a long career in wrestling, showing up in EMLL in 1950 (when he would’ve been around 17) and losing a mask in Palacio de los Deportes in 1981 as a Mr. Wrestling.

Most of the matches we have are under the Grimlado are in the 50s/60s time period. He was remembered in Arena Mexico Tuesday night as Escorpion II, and that’s a source of luchawiki confusion. For a long time, we had Raul Reyes as the Escorpion II of the 60s/70s, but I’m not sure that’s correct for the entire period. A man identified as Bufalo Reyes is under the Escorpion II mask, but Raul Reyes actually wrestled Escorpion II a few times in 1978 and 1979. Maybe there was a switch (which would be very unusual), maybe Grimaldo was also Bufalo Reyes and they got swapped somewhere along the line. I’ve got my fingers crossed that SuperLuchas or Box y Lucha will put out an obituary because all I know is I don’t know have it right.

AAA

AAA TV (SUN) 12/19/2021 Pepsi Center WTC, Benito Juárez, Distrito Federal
1) La Parkita & Octagoncito vs La Parkita Negra & Mini Gronda
2) Big Mami & Faby Apache vs Keyra & Lady Maravilla and Goya Kong & Pimpinela Escarlata
3) Myzteziz Jr. vs Argenis
4) Aramis & Laredo Kid vs Látigo & Toxin
5) Dave The Clown & Murder Clown vs DMT Azul & Puma King
6) Carta Brava Jr., Mocho Cota Jr., Tito Santana vs Cuatrero, Forastero, Sansón

Hey, remember when AAA announced this show and said it wasn’t a TV taping. As of today, it’s a TV taping with a new lineup. Ticketmaster doesn’t show a map for this show, so I’m not sure if tickets weren’t moving or AAA belatedly realized they’re running out of TV soon. Past TV patterns would have AAA 2021 Year In Review shows on Space for 12/18, 12/25, and 01/01, with this show airing on 01/08 and 01/15, and that 01/15 weekend as the first taping of the year. No knowing for sure given everything else going on.

This 12/19 card was shuffled and added onto around to get to go for four to six matches, enough to make it long enough for two weeks of TV. (That does point the arrow towards it being AAA needing TV.) Some of the names look like they just pulled in whomever was available. Psycho, Pagano, Vikingo, and Taurus are all booked out to Torreon that night, which wouldn’t happen if this was a planned taping. Aramis/Laredo vs Latigo/Toxin is one of the additions and might end up being better than anything on TripleMania. Argenis/Myzteziz is the feud that’s been going on since 2019 finally having a singles match. That is the first AAA singles match not involving a Marvel character since the main event of TripleMania.

AAA launched a new online store on Tuesday. This is going to come off me being negative as usual but this may be the last time I mention it. The pattern is AAA opens an internet store with a limited selection and generic designs, few people buy the merchandise, AAA stops mentioning the store within two months and then someone stumbles upon it on a year later stunned it hasn’t been taken down. I think this has happened three times. Only La Parka, Lady Shani, Mascarita Sagrada, Pagano, and Pentagon Jr. have designs and it’s one single logo for each on a variety of merchandise. The Pentagon design is the same photos they’ve been using for Pentagon on posters for eight years. New champion Vikingo is not yet included. I’m guessing someone at AAA held a meeting pointing out the large amount of money WWE and/or AEW get with merchandise and thought they should have it themselves, but that success requires resources and manpower over years and it seems unlikely AAA will ever invest that in to a project that’s not what they already do. AAA’s created a lot of great character designs over the year but the merchandise doesn’t reflect the creativity. It’s better than nothing, though it feels like another bit where AAA does just enough to say they did something but not enough to make it worthwhile, like the English commentary at TripleMania.

The main page lists “masks” as a category and then lets you know there are no masks available for sale if you click the link. Maybe that was a previous plan because the site seems to have been in the works for a while: the copyright date was listed as 2020 on the main page when I first checked. Streamerch.com.mx seems to be the site engine. The FAQ says the store ships international but the checkout page did not appear to allow you to change your location outside of Mexico.

IWRG is advertising a surprise semi-main for their show on Thursday, with Flamita and two mystery people advertised. The silhouettes are obviously of Dragon Bane and Hijo de Canis Lupus, who haven’t been around IWRG in months. Hijo de Canis Lupus seemed to break away from IWRG a few weeks ago by changing his gimmick to Alpha Wolf, and I guess it’s possible IWRG will debut new people in those characters. This is a Mas Lucha Premium (paid) show. Black Terry will also be honored on the show.

IWRG held a media day session on Tuesday to promote this show, including Psycho Clown talking about how he wants LA Park’s mask. I believe he can buy them outside the building. The media day included IWRG noting how some of their wrestlers have had the most matches in 2021, which appeared to be Roberto Figueroa reading my Twitter post with that list perhaps without mentioning me. Didn’t get an invite to the media day either. I guess it’s better than being reprinted in a paid newsletter with being mentioned.

The next IWRG/Mas Lucha Premium show is January 2nd, “Guerrero de Acero”, an all cage match show.

6) Blue Demon Jr. vs Carlito vs Penta 0M vs Electroshock vs Texano Jr.? [ROBLES MUNDIAL]

There are going to be a lot of Christmas Day lucha libre shows and this is definitely one of them. It’s Robles, they’re never going to have good cards, and this one is no better. The mystery person in the main event is ex-basketball player Peter John Ramos, but they’re describing him and not mentioning him by name to build that mystery. Bringing in Fenix to work that tag match seems like a very dumb idea but I guess it’s an easy payday for him.

Big Mami said during the press conference she wasn’t under contract to anyone, then afterward said she was still on good terms with AAA. So she’s one of many AAA wrestlers working as freelancers. La Mascara seemed to be leading the press conference so he may be in charge here with Alberto suspiciously not around much. La Mascara emphasized no one here will be blocked from working elsewhere, which is supposed to separate them from AAA and CMLL. That claim is going to be put to the test if/when Nacion & Elite start running and there are date conflicts. The most clipped moment of the press conference was Arturo Rivera’s chair collapsing underneath him for which Rivera said he’d start eating fewer tacos. Rivera says his time with AAA & generally TV has finished but on good terms.

With Robles around and Nacion Lucha Libre and Elite coming back, 2022 looks to have a lot of these types of promotions around, promoters with access to money and wrestlers but a poor history of putting on shows that interest fans. I’d take interesting failures, but only Elite has managed to be that of these three. The existence of those promotions is short-term good news for luchadors, who just want well-paying work wherever they can find it, but probably bad for running of lucha libre fans in the long term when disappointing shows are so common and everyone comes out of them looking like less of a star. (A disastrous show in North Carolina this past weekend was similar, but it’s not like there’s a big lucha libre scene in North Carolina to mess up.)

Chris Bey faces Laredo Kid on Thursday’s Impact. I didn’t see many Impact spoilers but the one I saw said this match was worth watching.

GCW announced Bandido & Negro Casas are off their show in Los Angeles on Friday. I believe Bandido is also off the Big Lucha show this weekend out of caution. My understanding Negro Casas is off because CMLL found out Bandido was booked and told Casas he was no longer allowed to work the show (and that hasn’t apparently changed even with Bandido off the show.) CMLL’s policy of blocking their own wrestlers just doesn’t work at this point – US promoters are not going to pick the CMLL wrestler in almost every situation, CMLL is not over in the US right now – and it only succeeds in costing CMLL luchadors work. On the other hand, this situation was known to GCW very soon after Casas was announced and they waited until two days until the show to confirm what people had suspected for a while. CMLL not being over in the US extends to US promoters not understanding how stubborn CMLL will be at all times and talking themselves into believing something might eventually change. I’d love to see Negro Casas and others in more places in the US, but a no from CMLL is a no.

Mas Lucha’s En+carados show mentioned the 12/12 AAA Guadalajara cancelations was due to (Guadalajara’s) Atlas football team making the LigaMX final on the same night.

Fenix put a list of people he’d like to face in singles matches in 2022, naming Arez, Latigo, Vikingo, Komander, and Kill Korton. It seems unlikely any of those will happen in AAA. They’re not pushed at that level and AAA gave up on booking non-Marvel 1v1 matches for the last half of the year.

Monterrey’s KAOZ put out a press release saying they now have no relationship with Rompiendo Madres to evade blame for the poor medical situation that left Chik Tormenta being taken away on a plank of wood. KAOZ was promoting that show on their own Facebook and has had a close relationship with Rompiendo Madres in the past. KAOZ also just did an interview bit 10 days ago where a) they said Cibernetico can only work shows with KAOZ’s signing off and Cibernetico worked that show so KAOZ had to be involved b) either lied or made them look silly by implying Ciberentico wasn’t going to TripleMania Regia when he worked TripleMania Regia after all. For their part, Rompiendo Madres posted a statement from Chik Tormenta saying everything was fine to try and move on from the situation. The US way to move on is to say “hey, we’ll do better next show” but Mexican indie promotions generally can’t even manage to pretend they’ll do better.

Cancun’s Total Wrestling Stars promotion seems like they had a similar incident on a show Sunday based on a statement they put out today. Luchador Rey Aguila was taken to the hospital after an injury on a powerbomb. A difference is the press release mentions they had paramedics and an ambulance on hand. (Also, there’s no video, not that I could find.) Comments elsewhere suggest Aguila is doing better now.

Rompiendo Madres announced Travis Banks for their 02/19 show in Arena Femenil. I haven’t seen results from their show this past Friday but their Facebook page indicates Banks showed up as a surprise then; he’s also over wrestler social media from Monterrey. My impression is that Banks has been cut off by Bandido and Big Lucha (time will tell on that) but that’s still just one group among dozens of indies around Mexico. Most aren’t going to have an issue in using him and their fans aren’t going to complain about Banks working the shows. He’ll be around Mexico indies as long as he wants to be around, no different than any scandalized Mexican luchador.

Superluchas has an interview with Crazy Boy, who feels DTU has gotten to the point where their fans will show up for the brand, knowing that even if they don’t have big stars now, they’ll have the stars of the future. Crazy Boy claims he had an offer from Satanico to work in Arena Coliseo Guadalajara before the pandemic.

11:04. Averno wins in straight falls in his return to Arena Mexico, pulling Mistico’s mask to pin him.

Averno and Mistico picked off where they left off; a singles match on Christmas seems plausible.

The ideas for big finishes seem limited in CMLL; the finish stretcher here were an exchange of Canadian Destroyers, an attempt at being current that comes off as passe. (They’re also having trouble both protecting each other and making the Destroyer look good on the apron; I’d rather it look bad like it did here than someone get hurt, but maybe that’s a reason to drop the title.) I thought it had good action and a little bit new stuff, but most people didn’t seem as into it. Soberano winning the tournament should’ve been obvious as soon as he gave up his national welterweight title (to the point where they probably shouldn’t have done it so loudly) and CMLL obviously seems him as one of their top stars. The previous champion, Cuatrero, was treated the same way and ended up leaving, but it looks like everything is OK with Soberano for now.

Coyote & Euforia came off as a surprise though I guess it should’ve. Instead of building a winning team up, these tournaments are all about the losing team getting in all the spots before they’re eliminated from that match. Even in the final, Volador & Magica Blanca took most of the action I guess because they weren’t going to need to do their offense in two weeks. Coyote is fine, though it’s hard to see him being elevated to a major spot if he wins this tournament. The top tecnico in the next block has a great chance of winning, whomever it turns out to be.

5) Místico, Soberano Jr., Volador Jr. b Cavernario, Hechicero, Templario

Panterita del Ring Jr. is believed to be around 19. The lightweight championship hasn’t been treated as meaningful but it’s still a big win for someone this new. Panterita looks good when CMLL gives him a chance – he did well in his tournament appearance on Friday – but we’ve never seen him go all out in a singles match. We won’t see this either unless CMLL taped it to air on Informa.

An actual feud on a Sunday show. Okumura/Dulce is part of the cage match and a possible last two. This show had cheap tickets for children, though it was only announced on Friday. Attendance doesn’t seem to be helped (though CMLL’s photos only seem to be showing one side of the ring.)

4) Dark Panther, Esfinge, Fugaz vs Gemelo Diablo I, Gemelo Diablo II, Sagrado
5) Blue Panther, Niebla Roja, Stuka Jr. vs Euforia, Hechicero, Mephisto

Niebla Roja is apparently still a tecnico who gets booked as a rudo half the time.

Vicente Fernandez is a famous Mexican signer; his “El Rey” song has been used by many wrestlers, including Atlantis the last few years.

Arena Coliseo Guadalajara announced they’ll resume Sunday shows on January 2nd.  The first show looks like it’ll have a Coliseo versus indies theme. This is the last weekly CMLL stop to come back since the pandemic shut down, though the Guadalajara shows still had less Mexico City talent than in previous times. The Mexico City/Puebla cards also remain a little bit smaller than before. CMLL also appears to have cut back from four to two edecanes per show for the Friday shows, and that’s more likely to be a budge cut than a health restriction at this point.

Tryout vs NGT. Noicy Boy & Aster Boy went to a draw, the commission authorized a restart, Noicy Boy won

The big names are coming in for Thursday’s anniversary show so this was all the kids. I presume they’re doing another Noicy/Aster title match.

A scheduled AAA spot show in Guadalajara on Sunday was canceled, with the press release saying neither AAA or the venue were to blame. Guadalajara long ago was a strong city for AAA but they’ve had chronic issues there since the disastrous 2015 Rey de Reyes show.

I’d previously wondered if Big Mami working Robles Promotions shows meant she was no longer under AAA contract, and she said that was the case at Robles Promotions show in Monday afternoon. She’s still working AAA spots shows – she’s listed for their show at the Pepsi Center next week – but said she’s not under contract to any promotion at the moment.

The “Clase Mundial” group in Xalapa, which appears to be run in Hijo del Tirantes, ran a show on Friday night in Arena Xalapa. Hijo del Vikingo won the group’s new title. Hijo del Tirantes was listed as wrestling on the show opposite Faby Apache in a trios but was replaced by “Black Jack”, who turns out to be Hijo del Tirantes’ son. That was his first match in Arena Xalapa and he’s only been wrestling since late 2020, but maybe worth keeping in mind with the Tirantes/Tirantes family drama playing out in AAA.

The final charges against Alberto el Patron left from a 2020 kidnapping case were dropped on Friday, with the court record indicating a witness did not appear for testimony. This case involved Alberto and his then significant other, who later posted a message on Instagram recanting the charges. The case still continued on for a year, with trial meetings every three months followed by a postponement. It certainly comes off as if the missing witness was the accuser and the delays were failed attempts to get her to testify, but we don’t have the facts to prove that. We also don’t really have the fact to exonerate Alberto, despite him claiming such on his Twitter feed; he wasn’t proven innocent, they just no longer had the evidence to prove him guilty. Which means almost everyone is going to keep thinking the same about Alberto as they have prior. This is a pattern and up to you to determine if Alberto has the worst luck possible with terrible people doing things that unfairly drag his name through mud or if Alberto himself is the terrible person.

In theory, the end of this case makes it more palatable for promoters to book Alberto. In reality, he’s been booked regularly for a while by groups like Robles as it is. He may get more, but many promoters in Mexico (and Mexican-themed US promotions) seem completely willing to overlook criminal charges when it comes to booking people. Alberto’s probably not going to get booked because he’s very expensive and isn’t a big star after being away from TV so long and hasn’t endured in a positive way. There’s little to no chance Alberto will get a job with a major US group, though he’ll probably continue to do interviews talking about how he’s really close to going back to WWE because that’s the only positive story that keeps him in the news. The question is if AAA, in its run of bringing back people for the 30th Anniversary Tour, will dabble with Alberto again. AAA seemed to had enough of Alberto in the past, but I never thought Rayo de Jalisco Jr. or Cibernetico would be back either.

Monster Jr. won Tigre de Plata’s mask in a cage match Saturday Arena Lopez Mateos. Tigre de Plata wasn’t advertised in the match and doesn’t seem to have wrestled regularly under that name since 2013. The AVE promotion show drew poorly for that arena, so I guess doing a cheap main event finish can’t hurt them any more than they’re already hurt.

Rompiendo Madres, which has appeared to be a subrand of KAOZ in the past, ran their Rey del Monterrey show in Monterrey’s Arena Femenil Monterrey. Cibernetico was the big name, and it was strange to see him get a big reaction in a baseball stadium last week and then draw maybe a couple of hundred people in the same town a week later. The story from the show was Chik Tormenta suffering a back injury on a superplex. The move looks normal to me – the really hard ring might be the issue. The bigger problem was there was no evident medical personnel and no stretcher, so Tormenta was carried out on a plank of wood. The show was likely taped for Mas Lucha, who posted an entirely embarrassing clip of the incident. If you can afford to use wrestlers like Cibernetico and Chik Tormenta, you should be able to afford a medic and a stretcher. I think that’s even part of the local regulations – I’ve been at RIOT shows in that same venue where things didn’t get started until an ambulance was on hand – so maybe there will be something to come from this.

There’s been a Blue Demon Jr. merchandise store on the same block as Arena Mexico for years; it was literally just a Demon store with nothing else. It’s now apparently not that; Blue Demon Jr. posted a video Friday saying that store was no longer official and he’d have a new store soon.

Ring of Honor had their Final Battle show on Saturday. Dragon Lee defeated Rey Horus in the opener. Demonic Flamita wrestled in a ten man match. ROH Women’s Champion Rok-C agreed to a title versus title match with AAA Reina de Renas champion Deonna Purrazzo, who appeared as a surprise (and will likely win the ROH championship if/when that match happens.) Current AAA Tag Team Champions FTR also appeared as a surprise on the show to fight with new ROH Tag Team champions the Briscoes. New ROH champion Jonathan Gresham seemed to suggest that Bandido, who missed the show due to COVID-19, would still face him for the ROH title at some point. The titles may live on for a while but it doesn’t appear ROH will. The show ended with a message that the promotion would be back in April 2021, consistent with the previously stated idea that the promotion would be rethought for the next few months (and possibly have no connection to the current version outside the name.) The ROH show instead played out like none of the wrestlers or the production staff expected there to be another Ring of Honor show and they were saying goodbye before looking for work elsewhere. Many of the wrestlers aren’t going to have a full-time offer someplace else and would be available for an April relaunch, but few seemed to have confidence one was happening.

If Sinclair does try to bring wrestling back, they should let the Ring of Honor name rest. I don’t think the name is a problem as much as the expectations. The early years of Ring of Honor are among the greatest runs of US indie wrestling, combining great work and taking advantage of market inefficiency (both WWE or TNA leaving some of the best US wrestlers unsigned because those companies had an overly narrow view of what a wrestler looked like.) That inefficiency is long gone, but the expectations of ROH being that promotion will always exist. Ring of Honor attempts at being something more “mainstream” have never been accepted or really worked, and they seemed forever caught between idea during the three years I closely watched the promotion. The ROH name has a lot of history but also a lot of baggage. Sinclair should start completely fresh if they’re going to start again, and that means starting with a new name.

Soberano/Templario + Averno’s return to Arena Mexico tonight, AAA/FMV lawsuit still exists, Bandido out of Final Battle with COVID

CMLL

CMLL’s Arena Mexico tonight has block A of the Gran Alternativa, the return of Averno to Arena Mexico and Soberano/Templario for the vacant CMLL middleweight championship. You’ve seen the lineup but I feel like posting it again anyway.

CMLL (FRI) 12/10/2021 Arena México
1) Dulce Gardenia, El Audaz, Espíritu Negro vs Disturbio, Nitro, Pólvora
2) Magia Blanca & Volador Jr. vs Akuma & Gran Guerrero and Blue Panther & Cachorro and El Coyote & Euforia and Sonic & Stuka Jr. and Enfermero Jr. & Mephisto and Panterita del Ring & Panterita del Ring Jr. and Cavernario & Rugido [Gran Alternativa, semifinal]
3) ? & ?? vs ??? & ???? [Gran Alternativa, 8f]
4) ? & ?? vs ??? & ???? [Gran Alternativa, 8f]
5) ? & ?? vs ??? & ???? [Gran Alternativa, 8f]
6) ? & ?? vs ??? & ???? [Gran Alternativa, 8f]
7) ? & ?? vs ??? & ???? [Gran Alternativa, quarterfinal]
8) ? & ?? vs ??? & ???? [Gran Alternativa, quarterfinal]
9) ? & ?? vs ??? & ???? [Gran Alternativa, semifinal]
10) Soberano Jr. vs Templario [CMLL MIDDLE, final]
11) Fugaz, Místico, Star Jr. vs Ángel de Oro, Averno, Terrible [Relevos Increíbles]

It’s a 99 pesos/$4.74 Ticketmaster show. There are ways this can go wrong, but it’s as good a value as CMLL is likely to offer on this Ticketmaster shows. The Panteritas or the Panthers making it to the finals would be the best story, but it’s still Magia Blanca & Volador Jr. until we know different.

CMLL officially announced the expected holiday cage match. It’ll take place on New Year’s Day, with both mask and hair on the line. The participants:

  • Dulce Gardenia
  • Sangre Imperial
  • Espiritu Negro
  • Stigma
  • Pegasso
  • Audaz
  • Disturbio
  • Coyote
  • Polvora
  • Nitro
  • Akuma
  • Okumura

It’s unlikely someone is going to lose a mask when hair is on the line; it’d have to be a case where like Nitro wants the payoff but can’t do a long singles match on his own. (I still think they’d try anyway.) Dulce Gardenia, Espiritu Negro, Disturbio, Akuma, and Okumura are those with their hair on line. It’d be surprising if Gardenia or Okumura lost their hair in something like this but not impossible. CMLL hasn’t announced plans for streaming this show, but it’s a safe bet it’ll be available.

CMLL (SUN) 12/12/2021 Arena México
1) Kaligua vs Pequeño Olímpico
2) Micro Gemelo Diablo I & Micro Gemelo Diablo II vs Chamuel & Micro Ángel
3) Magia Blanca, Magnus, Oro Jr. vs Dark Magic, Espanto Jr., Okumura
4) Diamond, Guerrero Maya Jr., Rey Cometa vs Cancerbero, Luciferno, Virus
5) Ángel de Oro, Atlantis, Titán vs Euforia, Hechicero, Mephisto

The third match has Okumura & Magia Blanca from the cage match, so they’ll be feuding. Diamond getting the semi-main over his other Depredadores partners may be notable. Who would’ve thought Cancerbero would be a regular semi-main guy two years ago. If Microman was booked as often as these Micro Gemelo Diablos, he may not have left CMLL.

CMLL (TUE) 12/14/2021 Arena Coliseo Guadalajara
1) Bello Antuan, Capitán Cobra, Temerario vs Jabalí, Relámpago Azul, Rumbero
2) Adrenalina, Estrella Oriental, Minotauro vs Anteuz, El Enviado, Príncipe Quetzal
3) Gallito Tapatío, Micro Gemelo Diablo I, Micro Gemelo Diablo II vs Átomo, Chamuel, Perico Zacarías
4) Furia Roja, Omega, Zandokan vs Gallo, Ráfaga, Star Black [Relevos Increíbles]
5) Difunto vs Bestia NegraCarlo RoggiFúnebreJokerOmar BrunettiVaquero Jr.Cris Skin [cage, hair, mask]

I guess CMLL’s sending less people this week because of the cage match (and maybe next Tuesday’s Arena Mexico show has slightly more names than usual.) This still seems early for a holiday match, so maybe the semi-main is setting up another direction.

Okumura met with NJPW officials on Friday. I’d assume sketching out plans for future CMLL/NJPW dates is on the schedule, though everything still seems fuzzy. He must be leaving today to get back for the Sunday show.

Mistico, speaking on TUDN, said he’d like to return to WWE. He says he experienced racism there and says they didn’t give him opportunities he was promised, feeling both were because they didn’t want him to overshadow the US talent. Mistico still insists he’d go back, for a chance to prove all his critics wrong. Mistico also believes that if social media had been as widespread as it was now, his fans would’ve been so vocal in their support of him that he would’ve had better success. He complimented John Cena and Triple H. Mistico also said he’d like to retire by 2026, which seems as likely as all retirement announcements. .

AAA

Wednesday was the one-year anniversary of FMV’s lawsuit against AAA and, maybe by coincidence, FMV filed a new document in the court case. I’ve been checking the court case frequently waiting for that next document, figuring it’d be a mention of a settlement and the case being dropped. That’s not what it was. It was just a status update charting FMV’s path to actually serving the lawsuit. The lawsuit is a year old and AAA still has evaded acknowledging it, and this piece made note of some recent activity, urging the court to let the lawsuit continue. The universal assumption was AAA & FMV quietly settled the lawsuit to allow the TripleMania Regia show to air internationally but it appears to still be ongoing. AAA & FITE just ran the show anyway.

AAA’s view might be they haven’t actually received the lawsuit, they believe they’re going to win the lawsuit and so they might as well continue as normally as possible. It appears YouTube and Facebook don’t want to get involved – we first learned of this after FMV’s copyright claims were enough to get AAA’s YouTube channel taken down – but maybe FITE was cool airing the show as long as AAA signed a piece of paper making sure they were excluded from any lawsuit over it. (That sounds like a thing FITE probably makes all people whose PPVs they air, so it may be no big deal for them.) It’s unclear to me why AAA bothered with the FITE show if they’re going to still be invisible internationally, but maybe whatever cash they made on the show was important to them at in this moment. It was far better than me having to stream it so I’m happy they did but not sure I would’ve suggested it knowing what we know now.

For you and me, people who would just like to watch AAA in peace, that means nothing changed. Perhaps FITE will continue to air PPVs, but the rest of the content will still be stuck behind a geoblock. We’re stuck using wild IPTVs, VPNs and maybe my Twitch channel to watch the show. Someday this will actually be over, but not today.

It doesn’t appear FMV was aware AAA aired TripleMania Regia. We’re learning a lot about why Lucha Underground didn’t take advantage of opportunities for growth, they’re not really focused on it. We’re not really learning a lot about AAA; they’ve always shown a willingness to do whatever they’re in the mood for with no obvious plan and deal with the consequences later.

It looks like Space is moving around the AAA start time to 7 pm tomorrow. It’s just the one Marvel match, so I’ll try to record it and upload it Sunday.

ROH

Bandido is off the Final Battle show Saturday after testing positive in his most recent COVID test. This is Bandido’s second bout with COVID. His first case was a bad one, contracting it last September and still testing positive in December of 2019. Hopefully, this one won’t affect him the same way. My belief is Bandido is vaccinated and still got it.

Ring of Honor has not announced how they’re going to handle the situation yet. In other places

  • Rey Horus replaces Bandido for West Coast Pro Wrestling today
  • Warrior Wrestling has not yet announced a replacement versus Dante Martin for Sunday
  • No sub yet either for GALLI on Sunday, where the scheduled match was Rey Horus, Bandido and Aramis vs Golden Dragon, Flamita, Gringo Loco

It usually takes at least 10 days to be cleared COVID, so Bandido is unlikely for his bookings with PWX and GCW the following week.

Dragon Lee versus Rey Horus is the only remaining lucha libre match on the ROH show. I believe Demonic Flamita will appear. I plan on appearing, but like sitting in the stands and not on the show. I suspect there’ll be some stuff happening after the PPV stops, and I may try streaming on that my Twitch channel if the signal is decent.

AroLucha

Yes, an AroLucha section. If you’re new or have forgotten, was a failed 2017-2018 crowd funding attempt at creating a US lucha libre promotion. The promotion hasn’t made news since 2019, when the news was “they used the mailing list to promote someone’s CBD website.” They’re back, announcing “Tom Bancroft, CEO of Pencilish Animation Studios” is a new investor in the Aro Lucha project and, surprisingly, the project still is alive. Pencilish Animation Studios is also a crowd-funded business, just having raised over two million dollars on a campaign that was completed last month. Aro Lucha mentions no specific future plans, kinda just writing that we should be excited the new that a new person is giving them money. The post is addressed to the AroLucha’s crowd funding posters, maybe attempting to give them hope their investment wasn’t a waste.

A Rey Mysterio focused animated series will premiere on Carton Latin America in 2022. It’ll be a ten-episode series with lucha libre themes. A trailer aired (and was immediately pulled in a bit of stage craft) on Thursday; the trailer aired in both English and Spanish, so I presume it’ll air in the US eventually as well.

LA Park, in promoting his upcoming IWRG appearance, says he doesn’t believe any one wrestler can sell out an arena nowadays. He used (and still does) joke that he’s the guy they bring in to sell all the tickets, but he believes it really also a good opponent, good publicity, and a full card.

5) Místico b Averno
Mistico took 2/3 to win, beating Averno with la Mistica

This is the first time this publication has written about an Arena Puebla show in two months (when Polvora & Felino Jr. won the tag titles.) They mention attendance was strong, which matches what I’ve seen. Averno coming back to face Mistico is a draw, at least for the first time.

I’m not totally sure about the semi-main result.

CMLL advertised this show as a stream on Marca Claro. The show didn’t stream. Neither CMLL or Marca explained why; they just left up the social media posts promoting it. No idea if it was just a short run or if they’ll be back next week.

Vaquero snuck in a foul on Difunto. Challenges continued for a cage match, which will happen next week. Money thrown in.
4) Dark Silueta © DQ Lluvia [MEX WOMEN]
Straight falls. First defense. Lluvia DQed for excessive violence.
5) Atlantis Jr., Místico, Soberano Jr. b Averno, Mephisto, Principe Daniel

The excessive violence DQ was Lluvia putting on a hold and not letting go of it quick enough. The referee never signaled the match was over, didn’t make a five count, just waved his arms like there Silueta had not quit, pulled Lluvia off, and gave Silueta the win. It came off like an evil or dumb referee decision. Lluvia argued the call for about ten seconds, then shook Silueta’s hand, raised her arm, and shrugged her should. The crowd looked appropriately baffled. This seems like one of those finishes where they’re trying to protect someone and everyone comes off worse.

The Arena Coliseo Guadalajara show was broadcast with one camera and the picture quality seemed off, so something must’ve happened. Could’ve been just someone’s phone instead of the usual production equipment.

CMLL (FRI) 12/10/2021 Arena México
1) Dulce Gardenia, El Audaz, Espíritu Negro vs Disturbio, Nitro, Pólvora
2) Magia Blanca & Volador Jr. vs Akuma & Gran Guerrero and Blue Panther & Cachorro and El Coyote & Euforia and Sonic & Stuka Jr. and Enfermero Jr. & Mephisto and Panterita del Ring & Panterita del Ring Jr. and Cavernario & Rugido [Gran Alternativa, semifinal]

9) ? & ?? vs ??? & ???? [Gran Alternativa, semifinal]
10) Soberano Jr. vs Templario [CMLL MIDDLE, final]
11) Fugaz, Místico, Star Jr. vs Ángel de Oro, Averno, Terrible [Relevos Increíbles]

A strange thing to say for a CMLL show: this is maybe a too-busy card. Soberano/Templario should get a lot of time for quality, the main event should get a lot of time to make Averno’s return feel like a big deal, and there’s a tournament block that’ll eat up a lot of time. It can work but it’ll be tricky. It also is a better $4 PPV than some of the $12 one they’ve done in the past. If they’d just bother to figure out VOD, this would be easy to recommend.

Rugido appears to be a rudo even though he’s in the Depredadores. There are no obvious candidates to advance; there are interesting picks like Panterita Jr. & Sonic but this is a crew without much momentum. I guess Volador/Magia Blanca are the favorites because it’s Volador.

CMLL (SAT) 12/11/2021 Arena Coliseo
1) Leono & Retro vs Apocalipsis & Príncipe Odín Jr.
2) Marcela, Princesa Sugehit, Skadi vs Amapola, La Comandante, Metálica
3) Eléctrico © vs Panterita del Ring Jr. [MEX LIGHT]
8th defense
4) Dark Panther, Hombre Bala Jr., Stuka Jr. vs Gemelo Diablo I, Gemelo Diablo II, Sagrado
5) Místico, Soberano Jr., Volador Jr. vs Cavernario, Hechicero, Templario

I would like a CMLL subscription service to exist so I could watch a single cam version of that title match. The main event could be good, could be fine with them hurrying onto other things quickly.

CMLL (MON) 12/13/2021 Arena Puebla
1) Meyer vs Fénix So
2) Micro Gemelo Diablo I & Micro Gemelo Diablo II vs Chamuel & Micro Ángel
3) El Audaz & Esfinge vs Felino Jr. & Pólvora
4) Soberano Jr., Star Jr., Titán vs Gemelo Diablo I, Gemelo Diablo II, Sagrado
5) Atlantis Jr., Gran Guerrero, Último Guerrero vs Ángel de Oro, Niebla Roja, Terrible [Relevos Increíbles]

This would be Niebla Roja’s first match since July; he’s been gone long enough that his last match was against NGD. Semi-main was a rematch. Felino Jr. & Polvora wrestle a lot of tag matches on this show.

No Sunday lineup yet. I wonder if they’re just getting the Puebla lineups quicker now.

Okumura is back in Japan at the moment. CMLL says he’s been appointed a sports goodwill ambassador by the city of Ikeda. He’s due back in Mexico for the 12/18 Lucha Memes show.

AAA

AAA’s Facebook and YouTube still remain region restricted. There is still no listed update to the lawsuit in the court filings – no settlement but also no angry note from FMV about AAA continuing to violate their agreement. Three theories:

  1. AAA & FMV reached a small agreement regarding the TripleMania Regia FITE while they negotiate over the rest of the issues, but they haven’t reached a settlement so everything else. The status quo remains but at least they’re talking.
  2. Or AAA & FMV have essentially settled but there are a few details left remaining before it gets filed and everything beyond the PPV is just waiting for it to be finished (or there are some technical hurdles to get everything back working worldwide)
  3. Or AAA & FMV haven’t reached a settlement, AAA just ran a PPV anyway and FMV didn’t notice as they are never paying close attention to what AAA actually does

The third option is funniest though least likely. TripleMania Regia isn’t important enough for FITE to get dragged into a lawsuit. AAA ran a ladder match without telling anyone they were running a ladder match, so maybe two is a little bit more likely than one but I don’t know definitely which one. Honestly, I don’t care which answer it is as long as we quickly get to the stage where I don’t have to use a VPN to see stuff that’s being posted for free.

Other Notes

ROH added Dragon Lee versus Rey Horus to their Final Battle PPV on Saturday, which should be great. Bandido/Gresham is the main event. I believe Demonic Flamita is booked, so he’s likely in a 10 man “wild card” tag match to open the show with others who don’t have a space on the show airing in the free hour. The full PPV seems easily worth the $10, even if it didn’t have the “maybe last ever ROH show” bit hanging over the top of it.

IWRG (THU) 12/16/2021 Arena Naucalpan
Moreno Family 59th Anniversary show
1) Hell Boy & Rey Halcón vs Limbo & Shalom
2) Benga Lee, Diosa Quetzal, Noisy Boy vs Fly Warrior, Lolita, Satania
3) Aster Boy, Rasputín, Sick Boy vs Gran Pandemónium, Hijo Del Pandemónium, Pandemónium
4) Arez, Látigo, Toxin vs Oficial 911, Oficial AK47, Oficial Fierro
5) Big Mami, Hijo del Alebrije, Niño Hamburguesa vs Big Boy, Big Chico Che, Big Mike
6) Hijo del Espectro Jr., Jessy Ventura, Psycho Clown vs Hijo de LA Park, LA Park, LA Park Jr.

This is a Mas Lucha Premium show, one of two IWRG shows they’ll have this month. I expected an apuesta match for this show, but they don’t really need it if they’re bringing in Psycho Clown and LA Park. That’ll be the biggest crowd IWRG has all year.

Mas Lucha’s En+Carados included a conversation with Diamante, talking about his success in Dragon Gate. It sounds like he’s going to be back in Mexico in December. When asked if there’s a Mexico promotion he’d like to join, he switched the conversation back to talking about winning the titles he said his primary goal is to win more titles in Dragon Gate.

Mas Lucha posted a schedule for the upcoming week, listing which shows will be airing. It’s very useful and I wish they would do this every week.

MLW announced they would be launching an “MLW Azteca” series in January. The actual story here is next Wednesday’s show will be MLW’s final new episode for 2021, and the matches they taped in Tijuana, will air starting January 6th. I’m not as sure if the outdoor matches are going to all air; the next taping is January 21st, they taped 9 matches inside, they probably don’t need much else. MLW is bringing them “MLW Azteca” to get a little more attention and to explain why the roster will be different than usual, but this is a concept that’ll probably only exist whenever they tape in Tijuana.

Jack Evans posted on Twitter that he was being extorted by the Del Valle Police Department, was going to stop paying the police, and believes he may be arrested for planted drugs soon.

Konnan Big is listed on a show on Sunday, so his retirement lasted less than three weeks.

RIOT announced Blake Christian as the first participant in their La Rina tournament, February 11 & 12.

Box y Lucha 3946 has Mistico & Averno on the cover and an obit for El Vikingo inside.

LuchaWorld has this week’s Lucha Report.

Demus is hosting a tattoo family.

Vikingo becomes Mega champion at TripleMania Regia, Soberano/Templario in a title final, MLW/Crash

There are spoilers for the MLW taping down in the Other section, if you don’t want to see them.

AAA TV (SAT) 12/04/2021 Estadio de Béisbol Monterrey, Monterrey, Nuevo Leon [ESTOFITELucha CentralMilenioPost WrestlingRecordTV AztecaVoices of Wrestling]
1) Gran Mazo & Leyenda Americana b Engañoso & Venenoide
Did not air on the FITE stream
2) Flammer, La Hiedra, Maravilla b Faby Apache, Lady Shani, Sexy Star 2
10:19. Hijo del Tirantes fast counted a pin after Tirantes Sr. had tried to help Faby Apache.
3) Cuatrero, Forastero, Sansón b Carta Brava Jr., Mocho Cota Jr., Tito Santana and Abismo Negro Jr., Arez, Psicosis II [AAA TRIOS, #1 Contenders]
13:25. Cuatrero & Forastero beat Arez. Ciberentico returned to AAA prior to the match, promising to destroy Konnan and lead the Vipers. He ran in after the match, laying out the six non-Vipers.
4) Diamante Azul, Puma King, Sam Adonis b Chessman, Dave The Clown, Murder Clown
14:08. Empresa pinned Dave the Clown after other identified clowns revealed themselves to be La Empresa members. Chessman was stretchered out, though not until Adonis missed a moonsault on him.
5) Dragón Lee & Dralistico b Laredo Kid & Willie Mack
13:54. Dragon Lee beat surprise wrestler Willie Mack, who became quickly popular. Hermanos Lee repeated their challenge for whoever end up tag team champions. Dragon Lee also challenged Laredo Kid for his Cruiserweight title, which Laredo Kid accepted.
6) Cash Wheeler & Dax Harwood © b Fénix & Pentagón Jr. [AAA TAG, Ladder]
FTR and Lucha Brothers yelled at each other and brawled prior to the fifth match. This was made a ladder match for no established reason and with no explanation. Vickie Guerrero, seconding FTR, threw powder in Penta’s face to cause him to fall backwards through a table, allowing Cash to get the belts.
7) Cain Velasquez, Pagano, Psycho Clown b LA Park, Rey Escorpión, Taurus
Cain Velasquez wore a mask in the style of the Arizona State Sun Devils. The crowd was strongly pro-Park and anti-Cain as a result. Cain had Park in a submission until Park’s son ran in. Park had the advantage but was distracted by a Rayo de Jalisco Jr. appearance (and Rayo mistakenly starting his promo.) Velasquez submitted Park. Park and the rudos walked by Rayo without incident as he came to the ring to talk about his family’s history in Monterrey and his own in AAA. NGD appeared to confront Rayo and were eventually run off by the tecnicos to boos.
8) Hijo Del Vikingo b Samuray del SolBandidoBobby FishJay Lethal [AAA MEGA]
14:22. scheduled as Omega 7th defense. AAA stripped the title from Omega on November 22nd because Omega would be unable to compete due to injury, then started naming challengers over the following days. All wrestlers generally worked as tecnicos. First pinfall to a win, with Vikingo defeating Sol via Cuerno del Vikingo reverse 450 splash. No one else felt as close to winning. The AAA tecnicos celebrated with Vikingo. Vikingo said he wanted to defend against Omega.

I’m not right all the time – I’m wrong a fair bit – but I figured out what kind of show this would be in the preview and I was dead on. The undercard was a heat building exercise with few good matches, the semi-main was the freak show of LA Park fighting the MMA fighter and the main event was good but not the Omega/Vikingo level of match that would’ve made the show. Vikingo winning was a nice moment, one we’ll remember for a long time if this gets followed up well, and the rest will be quickly forgotten. AAA drew a big house and trending on social media for a show that wasn’t “one of the biggest shows of the year” quality. I didn’t love the Mexico City TripleMania either but it came off better than this show with disappointing matches and nonsense. There’s always going to be a high level of nonsense with AAA, but there wasn’t anything like Pagano/Chessman level entertaining nonsense from last December’s TripleMania. There have been worse shows with a TripleMania show on it, but this didn’t click.

The main event had Vikingo with the biggest moments, which is exactly what you’d want out of the match. It just didn’t have quiet enough to feel like the other people were worthy opponents. The goal was to get everyone their time, but five guys getting time in a sub fifteen match meant the match was largely people shuffling in and out. There are some people who I don’t recall doing much outside of the (midcard cliche) everyone takes a turn hitting their finish so someone can break up the pin bit. This still worked because the crowd in Monterrey really wanted to see Vikingo win the title and they got it. Everyone was five, the match just didn’t convince me I was wrong many of these people were unnecessary.

The semi-main was another great example of everyone underestimating how beloved LA Park is to a Mexican crowd. He wants to be a rudo, he did everything he could to look like he was outmatched by Cain, and the crowd strongly got behind him because they believe him. AAA’s surely going to spend a full year doing 30th Anniversary-themed cameos, but the Rayo one didn’t work. I hope he was just there to do a cameo for AAA, but Arena Lopez Mateos actually doing that NGD/Rayo match in a few weeks. Rayo’s talked like a man who plans to keep his mask to the grave, if not beyond, so I don’t believe they’re heading to a TripleMania mask match out of this.

The ladder match – not announced, not explained, with the belts hanging bizarrely towards a corner instead of the center of the ring – was the least of a disappointing Fenix/Penta vs FTR feud. Fenix (& Cash) disappeared for most of the match, the ladder spots were minimal and didn’t add any value, Vickie throwing powder in Penta’s face causing him to fall back through a table was ridiculous. AAA will keep FTR as champions as long as possible because they’re willing to use racist and xenophobic tropes to get heat in ways most people find in bad taste or too risky to do, and because AAA loves the idea of keeping their belts on AAA TV (which FTR are more into than Omega.) It’s unclear how FTR are going to going to work with teams like Dragon Lee & Dralistico, who have even a less sense of the style FTR want to work than the Lucha Brothers, but good matches for the tag team titles have shifted into a low priority.

Willie Mack got quickly over in his AAA return; he was the foreigner on the show who got the most favorable reaction. Dralistico missed a moonsault badly near the finish and doesn’t seem to be at the level of his brother. Dragon Lee & Laredo Kid should be a great match but it’s not evident what AAA is getting of value by highlighting the Munoz family over the own talent. Maybe it’d work better if they weren’t doing the same thing with the two previous trios matches, where outsiders La Empresa and NGD both defeated the home team. Events like TripleMania usually include one of those outsiders being defeated, and it was a fault in planning that AAA wasn’t in that part of the story for almost all of the matches. The Vipers trios match was slightly better and the crowd seemed up for Cibernetico’s return, though Cibernetico destroying everyone in his return seemed like an ominous sign. One of many about how AAA values the people who are in for TripleMania versus the people who were working empty arena shows all year. . The AAA luchadoras wrestled a fairly decent match that was completely overshadowed by the Tirantes family drama and the lumberjacks; you can tell the women have pride because they put it effort when it clearly wasn’t going to matter.

If you’re looking to watch the show for great matches, the main event and the Dragon Lee tag match are two matches to watch. If you’re looking for disasters, maybe watch the Empresa match.

The English announcing (Matt Striker & DJ Ocho) was largely panned, no different than usual. They appeared to be doing the show remotely and they sounded too quiet, something that could’ve been fixed and wasn’t. That’s the way of AAA. It doesn’t sound like they did well on the matches they were prepared for, but starting off the show with a bonus match they were unprepared for might as well have been sabotage. It ensured they’d lose the trust of their audience immediately by throwing out a bunch of people they didn’t know they had to know. It’s not like calling the match was impossible, anyone who watched even just the last AAA major show (Heroes Inmortales) would’ve known the angle and known the women, but these two did not. AAA is too chaotic and too unorganized for anyone to competently call a TripleMania with just a day of preparation. It’s probably going to just get harder as AAA throws in more random figures from the past on the 30th Anniversary show.

My hunch is part of FITE’s requirements for carrying TripleMania is offering an English language feed and AAA did the minimum they were required to do while lying to themselves it wouldn’t matter if it was bad. AAA very noticeably never promoted the English language feed to their audience, only Fite did. Konnan was already trying to shift the blame to FITE on his podcast that came out before the show by saying FITE had picked them. It’s too bad FITE couldn’t pick more prepared people if they did pick them, but AAA knowing their show would have a bad broadcast didn’t stop them from taking the check from FITE. Most people won’t know or care who picked the announcers, just that it was yet another show with bad English announcing and it’ll be a reason maybe they don’t spend money on AAA next. AAA is delusional about their ability to break into the US if they can’t address this issue, and they’ve shown no interest in getting it right. I’ve lost track how many times they’ve got it wrong.

(Konnan also blamed the TV networks for having two brawls in a row, with him knowing they should’ve put the Dragon Lee match in the middle to break it out. The implication is Space requires to have Dragon Lee & Dralistico as part of the four matches they were airing. In the end, due to AAA running late, Space got to air five matches and they would’ve still seen that tag match if it was moved to split up the brawls. It was not moved.)

The technical part of the FITE broadcast went fine. The stream played without issue, having a player that allows you to rewind and rewatch later is a great improvement over CMLL. The music seemed drowned out a bit – there were a couple of times where the announcers were reacting to something we couldn’t hear – but otherwise no big issue. The English announcers were said to be quiet on their side. I was told by people in the arena that the mics seemed to be picking up just the first few rows, so you heard the people who paid a lot of tickets because they really love wrestling chanting for some people who weren’t getting the same reaction farther back. It definitely made the show better but didn’t seem to be representative of the crowd as a whole.

Konnan sat down with Jose Manuel Guillen and Hugo Savinovich for an interview after the show, sounding understandably exhausted. It started as a real conversation about the show but Konnan drifted into the storyline on occasion. He repeated the same complaints about “AAA” stripping Omega of the title because he was a foreigner, without getting into the reality of Konnan being part of that decision. (Also, Konnan’s storyline complaint doesn’t make sense, because they haven’t stripped Purrazzo of the title and she’s going just as long as champion. Konnan could be intended to be a lying heel as a character, but the babyfaces don’t get to challenge his lies.) Konnan talked highly about the roster, though it was strange for him to talk about the strong fan reactions for Mr. Iguana, Nino Hamburguesa, and Big Mami when known were booked on the show. He also went through a list of AEW names, seemingly promising every AEW star (up to and including Punk & Danielson) are just so close to coming in. There’s obviously value in bringing meaningful outside names, but Konnan’s talk about AEW always makes it sound like he’s much more excited about one-off guess appearances by AEW than doing anything with the people already in AAA. I guess those are AEW wrestlers are the real stars.

Konnan also appeared at last week’s EMW show, saying he would be part of both that promotion and the Crash, with EMW running a non-Auditorio building going forward. Konnan is known to be creatively involved in at least AAA, The Crash, KAOZ, and EMW currently in Mexico.

Hijo del Vikingo made his first defense of the Mega Championship in Saltillo on the AAA/BARBA spot show on Sunday night, defeating Laredo Kid. It was said to be really good, as good as anything on TripleMania. You’d expect that with those two. The show also included Taurus defeating Bandido and NGD beating Poder del Norte. BARBA shows are taped for Mas Lucha though it may be a couple of months before we see it.

Vikingo had been scheduled for a show in Durango, which was postponed.

AAA is essentially done for the year. There are spot shows scheduled, but no TV tapings until January. There is still the 12/19 show in Mexico City, though it doesn’t appear to be airing anywhere. I continue to expect some wrestlers may be moving on from the promotion, but no one announced as much this weekend. I’d expect we’ll get some of AAA’s take on TripleMania Regia when this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter comes out. The next bit of actual news might be whenever that first January show gets announced. It’s been in Mexico in recent years, so AAA might not talk about until after that 12/19 show.

I may not end up streaming AAA on Space this week. That was the original plan when multiple matches were to debut on Space. AAA’s PPV ended up airing everything but the out-of-continuity Marvel match. I understand not everyone watched the PPV, but you’ll have waited a week to see the two matches that’ll be repeated. It can probably wait until I have a chance to upload it instead, rather than me trying to stream while airing another show. Still thinking this out.

Templario attacked Soberano after the match to build up to next week’s final

CMLL wrestlers and fans often say that every wrestler is replaceable. They’ll always find a new person, so it doesn’t matter if an NGD or a Microman leaves. CMLL doesn’t seem to believe this is the case with Soberano. They brought him back to win a prestigious tournament and now it appears he’ll likely win a world title next week against his best opponent. That’s a recruiting push to keep him around and it seems like it’s going to work. It’s also going to work for us watching CMLL, because a pushed and motivated Soberano seems like good news. Maybe more valuable people should make it clear they could go elsewhere.

The Micros didn’t look like the other missing micros in the highlights I saw. They’re clearly not the guys who wrestled as Mini Gemelo Diablo in Matamoros, but I’m less sure who they are.

Mistico worked this show in Arena Coliseo, then the main event in Arena Lopez Mateos, and then the Arena Neza main event the same night. He’s in a bit of demand. Electrico is a champion CMLL forgets exists for years at a time so any title defense is a potential title change. Panterita Jr. would be one of the youngest national champions ever if he did win.

Nothing much going on here outside of challenges. Still waiting for the cage match to be announced, though this week will probably be more about announcing the Gran Alternativa teams. CMLL definitely doesn’t have 16 rookies, so either this is going to be an unexpected flood of new names or it’ll be filled up with guys who’ve just been in the first two matches forever.

CMLL’s upcoming Friday shows will air on PPV. A tweet says the two Gran Alternativa blocks will be available for 99 pesos ($4.67 USD). The tweet doesn’t say exactly the final will be on Ticketmaster Live, but it seems a safe bet CMLL will be streaming on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. An ultrarare CMLL reply on Twitter actually revealed they’d be back on Ticketmaster Live a few days ago. CMLL tournament block shows are typically bad but Soberano/Templario should be great and Averno’s return to Arena Mexico might be a special moment. I’m less certain about the 12/17 show, unless CMLL rushes to Mistico/Averno.

Today’s Arena Puebla show has a Mistico/Averno main event. Nothing special on Tuesday Arena Mexico. Tuesday Guadalajara has the Lluvia/Dark Silueta MEX WOMEN title match, where it’d be shocking if Silueta lost.

Miguel Reducindo’s Mas Lucha column explains Blue Panther Jr.’s absence is due to “health issues that urgently needed attention.” The exact issues are not specified, neither when he’ll return. Reducindo also notes the reduced number of edecanes on CMLL shows since the start of COVID and mentioned something happening which could lead to them going away permanently, though it’s not said what happened.

Lucha Libre Elite officially announced they’d return to Arena Mexico in 2022, which had been the hint for a while. No specific date yet, so we don’t really know any more than we did before. The Reducindo article mentioned Super Fly might end up in Elite, which may be a sign of what kind of wrestlers you expect.

These tapings are always as weird for MLW fans as FantasticaMania is for NJPW people because it’s just a lot of people they’re not familiar with and a few sprinkled in regulars. They may have shot vignetes to hype them – I think that was MLW putting out a in-character article about an open door policy is how they’re going to explain the AAA wrestlers this time around.

I think MLW is about two or three episodes from starting to air these. Zona Ruda was disappointed with no LA Park or Davey Richards, who had both been advertised. The trios matches were said to be the best on the show. Attendance was good but down from the last show, which was The Crash Anniversary show with no announced lineup. No next date was announced for The Crash outside of returning in 2022.

MLW also did an unannounced afternoon taping using the training area behind Auditorio de Tijuana. Maybe the idea was to get a similar “run-down” feel of Lucha Underground, though that area is less the cinematic version of those temple sets and more actually run-down. I hope they at least moved the nicer ring out. Matches taped included Pagano versus Savio Vega and Aramis versus Hijo del Vikingo. It’d be nice if AAA could put their two wrestlers against each on their own show, but it’s not to be.

Drago Kid did very well in his weekend GCW appearances. I don’t think people grasped how much that was due to the work of Gringo Loco and Flamita basing very well for him, though Drago Kid also obviously contributed.

ROH posted the Dragon Lee versus Jonathan Gresham match for free on YouTube. Their full show, which includes something that starts as PJ Black versus Bandido, is available on their website. ROH will announce Dalton Castle’s TV title opponent on Tuesday, and I don’t believe it’ll be a Dragon Lee rematch.

PWR will air their 09/25 show as a Fite PPV this Friday. It’s $10. The page doesn’t list the lineup, but the results Lucha Central posted have Rayo de Jalisco & Mariachi Loco versus LA Park & Hijo de LA Park, as well as a Baronessa/Lady Apache match and Misterioso versus JR Kratos.

Final two advance to next week. Felino Jr. replaced Raziel

The cibernetico is the usual CMLL bit of the final two advancing to next week’s show, though at least one participant is unaware. Soberano Jr. vacated the Mexican National Welterweight championship to participate in this one so that’s one more tournament to come. It also makes him a favorite to be on the final two. Templario would be great in the final, but it may also mean he’d have to give up the national middleweight title and yet another tournament, so I’m rooting against him. Dragon Rojo and Virus may be better rbets, though I need to see the weigh-in on Virus.

CMLL announced Felino Jr. in for Raziel earlier today. That’s three straight shows Raziel has been advertised on and hasn’t appeared. It’s as if he and CMLL are waiting on a test result, they keep putting him on lineups expecting to get the needed result, and it hasn’t come yet. Just a theory, not confirmed.

Not too much to this show, which isn’t airing live and will premiere on TV next Saturday. There’s no room for another angle with next week being the start of Gran Alternativa anyway. The second match may set up more cage match challenges. There are not too many micros left to be a Micro Gemelo Diablo, so it would have be some surprising double duty or there are new guys they’ve kept hidden somewhere. It’s still very weird to add more rudos micro in a division that already is heavy on the rudo side.

He’ll make his Friday show return next week. This show is the first time for that Averno/Mistico singles match in a CMLL ring since 2010, and that sounds like a good idea for a holiday Arena Mexico.

Dark Soul popped up here back in 2019 so he may have been around more by now if not for the pandemic stoppage.

CMLL (TUE) 12/07/2021 Arena Coliseo Guadalajara
1) Aurelius & Maxiums vs Atilius & Rey Urano
2) Adrenalina, Estrella Oriental, Minotauro vs Destructor, Persa, Quka
3) Bestia Negra, Carlo Roggi, Difunto, Fúnebre vs Cris Skin, Joker, Omar Brunetti, Vaquero Jr.
4) Dark Silueta © vs Lluvia [MEX WOMEN]
first defense
5) Atlantis Jr., Místico, Soberano Jr. vs Averno, Mephisto, Principe Daniel

Silueta will likely get the big hometown win. The third match is heading to a big apuesta match in the next couple of weeks. The opener appears to include a new team of Romanos.

AAA

TripleMania Regia is on Fite, $20 USD for 6 matches starting at 6:30 pm. If you’re in Mexico, you can’t buy the show, but you can see the last four matches starting at 8 pm on Space, and the rest of the show next week.

I wrote a too-long preview of TripleMania Regia for Voices of Wrestling, which should be up today. I came to the conclusion the show will probably be good but it’s full of matches I’m not excited to see. They needed to have a stronger AAA lineup for their return to FITE, and they swerved into featuring a lot of non-AAA people. Losing Omega hurts, but that’s not the reason there’s no big blowoff match on the show, just a lot of first or second acts of stories. I’ll have a recap for the show on Post Wrestling Saturday.

SI reports AAA considered running a Hijo del Vikingo vs Laredo Kid vs Dragon Lee vs Fenix match for the vacant AAA mega championship but decided not to do it. They didn’t want to change the announced tag matches and decided to go with the imports instead. It’s a hard story to believe because the proposed match is so much better than what AAA is doing that leaking such a thing is also telling on yourself. Even if AAA didn’t think of the idea, they probably should’ve gone with or something like it. I understand not wanting to break up the FTR/Lucha Brothers match, but it’s hard to defend keeping the other one as announced. The Dragon Lee/Dralistico versus Laredo Kid/whoever match easily could’ve been postponed to another show, and everyone involved being added to the title match would’ve made a lot more sense than what we end up with.

The version of this story in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter quotes “AAA” as saying they believed Omega was going to be out for a long time, and they would’ve done an interim title or just postponed the title match if they had known it would be a couple of months. The WON had reported Omega was hoping to return around February before AAA had announced they were vacating the title, but the newsletter also seems less definite about that February timeline in this report. AAA says the best names they could get from AEW and and liked the price on were Fish and Lethal. (It doesn’t appear AEW did AAA any great favor for losing on Omega; thems the breaks I guess.) They got permission from ROH to use Bandido even though he’s free to work for whomever in Mexico. In my mind, the only two viable finishes to that fiveway are Vikingo pinning Bandido or Bandido pinning Vikingo, so AAA may have wanted to make sure there’s no issue if they choose to have Vikingo beat the ROH champ.

AEW is doing Dark tapings today, which may have factored into the names AEW offered AAA for TripleMania. California’s Misterioso appeared on the tapings in an enhancement role; he was there previously during the pandemic. FTR has already made it to Mexico.

Both Chessman and Murder and Dave say Chessman will replace Monster Clown in their TripleMania Regia match. AAA continues to promote Monster Clown anyway.

Azteca had said their TripleMania Regia airing would start earlier than the show normally airs, at 10:30. It’s now being advertised as it’s normal time of 11:30 (and it often gets pushed late because boxing goes long.)

Fenix missed this week’s AEW show but will still be on the AAA show tomorrow. The WON confirms it’s a visa issue; Fenix is believed to be in Mexico already so it won’t affect TripleMania Regia. That match being pulled from Rampage has nothing to do with it happening on TripleMania Regia.

AAA announced Vicki Guerrero will accompany FTR at TripleMania Regia. They taped a promo building this up, which AAA still hasn’t aired. The La Empresa vignette probably scheduled to air two weeks ago did turn up on social media, so maybe the FTR one will air Saturday.

Cibernetico and KAOZ director Alonso Botello appeared in an interview to insist that Cibernetico is signed by the Monterrey-based indie group exclusively. AAA continues to tease Cibernetico showing at TripleMania Regia, but KAOZ is claiming they AAA hasn’t reached out to them to make a deal to use Cibernetico on the show. They did sound willing to work with AAA if AAA called.

Super Fly announced on Facebook that he was leaving AAA after 15 years. He thanked Antonio Pena, Joaquin Roldan, Maricela Pena, Dorian Roldan and Jorge Flores. Super Fly had hinted on social media he wanted to move on from AAA for months and showed up on an indie show in October without explaining why. TripleMania Regia may have been his final scheduled date and so the announcement came after he was sure he wasn’t going to be needed in Monterrey. Super Fly looked like he still had something left in the tank in AAA, but also that AAA had grouped him in with other veterans they weren’t going to do much with going forward. I expect there will be similar announcements from other AAA people as soon as their commitments are finished this weekend.

El Enconomista has an article on the Charly/AAA jersey tie-up. Charly has been doing themed jerseys each year since 2018, previously with Netflix show Club de Cuervo, Star Wars, and a Dia de Muertos theme. The alternate jerseys sell about 25-30% of the normal home/away shirts, hoping to pull in both fans of the teams and fans of the concept they’re doing each year. There has been at least talk of wrestlers representing each of the six teams involved appearing on AAA shows, similar to the Marvel Lucha Libre characters, but that doesn’t read like it’s past the idea stage.

Someone did a dive off the middle level, which makes it harsh to call it a forgettable Thursday show. The fans felt that way, low attendance for this one.

Two title matches and one hair match is more loaded than usual; Maximo’s even here for some reason. This is an IWRG chain match so just beating someone is too easy and touching all four corners is too normal. There will be a key hanging above the ring that you must use to unlock yourself from the chain before going for the win.

Wrestlers were already said to be in Thursday to film pre-tapes, which should those heading to TripleMania Regia to not need to stick around. There are some undercard matches that could be good, maybe the fourth match, but also some MLW weirdness. At least Vikingo has an easy match. before TripleMania Regia. This should start airing on MLW’s YouTube show in the next couple of weeks. LA Park was announced for this show but had previously announced he and his family would not be appearing. MLW’s EJ Nudka was also advertised and isn’t on this lineup.

GCW tonight has a FITE show with Bandido versus Tony Deppen and a lucha libre trios match. Tomorrow’s show, against TripleMania, included Deppen versus Demonic Flamita.

This weekend’s ROH TV has Bandido vs PJ Black. It’s possible that’s Bandido’s last appearance on ROH TV. There’s three episodes (and 1 PPV and some YouTube matches) left after this, and none of the luchadors are on the 12/11 weekend show.

AAA , Big Lucha (SUN) 12/19/2021 Bandido Gym, Iztapalapa, Distrito Federal
1) Viajero vs Limbo
2) Éxtasis, Radioactivo, Sussy Love vs Kong Brother I, Kong Brother II, Lady Maravilla
3) Cometa Mata & Skayde vs Komander & Negro Navarro
4) Abismo Negro Jr., Arez, Látigo vs Bendito, Elemental, Yutani
5) Cuatrero, Forastero, Sansón vs Carta Brava Jr., Mocho Cota Jr., Tito Santana
6) Emperador Azteca, Flamita, Súper Nova, Texano Jr. vs Bandido, Ciclón Ramírez Jr., Gigante Orión, Microman

I point out this lineup to draw attention to Microman in a cage match and Komander & Negro Navarro as a tag team. A lot of AAA names on this show, which probably speaks to Bandido’s improved relationship with AAA. Torreon’s Arena Coliseo Tony Arellano says they’ll have a Big Lucha show (with Vikingo) soon; that fits for a holiday 12/23 show but no date is announced.

The 06/11 Lucha Libre Expo in Philadelphia announced a Damian 666 & Black Taurus versus Psicosis (I) and TBA match. That’s good, but the real news is the silhouette is obviously El Hijo del Vikingo. The Instagram post goes as far as tagging Vikingo. I’d guess the plan is for Vikingo to be there, there’s still visa paperwork waiting to be processed before he can be announced, but tickets are going on sale today so they want the hin tout there. Expo Lucha is a Masked Republic project, so there’s a really strong chance they’re working on the visa themselves and it’s far enough along they feel safe in teasing him. I’m sure we’ll all know when it’s actually final.

Alberto el Patron (on the KO a la Carrera podcast, noted by PlanetaWrestling) says Nacion Lucha Libre is returning in January. That fits with the “first season” shows being quickly run through on FITE, though believe it when a poster comes out. It does confirm Alberto is still with the project.

LuchaWorld has the latest Lucha Report.

Record has a column clearing up the Azteca/Fox Deportes story. WWE is not moving to Azteca; nothing is. The new owners of Fox Deportes bought the channel and the content but didn’t get the ad sales department, so Azteca will be weirdly selling ads for them. That graphic was meant to illustrate all the different properties that Azteca’s ad buyers could now get time on, but nothing really changes for the viewers or the content.

Mexico City’s government is proposing a 2% tax on all electronic commerce starting in 2022, which would seem to include streaming events. This would affect the prices of CMLL PPVs most of all, and other promotions who do streaming content in Mexico City – maybe next year’s TripleMania. It wouldn’t be a big change; it’d be about 20 cents USD more for the most expensive shows on the current CMLL price scale and would likely be passed directly onto the consumer. This is a proposed change and has not been approved yet.
