CMLL (TUE) 10/04 Arena Coliseo Lineup [ova]
1) Mini Olimpico, Bracito de Oro, Fantasy b Fire, Sombrita, Troll
2) Ramstein, Jeque, Apocalipsis b Kronos, Sombra de Plata, Valiente
3) Hijo de Pierroth, Okumura, Canek Jr. b Satanico, Safari, Virus
4) Heavy Metal, Brazo de Plata, Black Warrior DQ Universo 2000, Mascara Ano 2000, Pierroth
Tecnicos won fall 1, rudos got themselves DQed in round 2
5) Hijo de Lizmark b Terrible
Terrible spent much of the mask going after Lizmakr’s mask. He took the second fall with his feet on the ropes, but Lizmark got a clean pin to end it.

There’s talk about El Hijo del Santo’s comic, which is apparently up to #16 (and appearing biweekly.) Santo’s website is www.elhijodelsanto.com.mx, and he also has an english language site @ officialelhijodelsantohomepage.com I wish the store was actually a web store and not a gallery of items they have in the actual store; I could go for that first blue SANTO! shirt.

Add: CMLL.com says Ricky Marvin will be back in Mexico, for the last month of the year.

10/04 news

In today’s Ovaciones, Perro Aguayo promises more members. Ovaciones does not list Terrible or Tarzan Boy among the current group, interestingly. Perro wants to win hairs and championships, but doesn’t mention any specific ones, and generally to take over all of CMLL.

Ovaciones also slips in that NJPW’s Jado and Gedo will be in Mexico, starting 10/21 and staying for five weeks (so around 11/25).

Box Y Lucha #2734 is up. Inside:
- Poster of Dr. Wagner, Mistico, Groon XXX and Ultimo.
- Mr. Aguila talks about his return to CMLL. He emphasizes that he finished his contract with AAA and was a free agent. He’s back for revenge on Ultimo.
- More details about the car accident which killed Pantera’s son.
- Interview with Santo. He’s been very impressed with his “godson” Mistico, but he’s not going to allow rudos to take advantage of him any more.
- Atlantis assures us that his team isn’t scared of the tecnicos, and they’re going to quiet them for good this week.
- Mistico’s ready for them. Mistico’s ready for a tag team mask/mask match if anyone wants it.
- Dr. Wagner laughs in the face of the Atlantis/Ultimo pair.
- rudo Referee Moises “Mixteco” Nicolas, 65, died this past week. He actually passed at the close of a match; after counting the final pin of a mask/mask match between King Dragon and Mr. Fuego in Arena Lacon (Reyes La Paz, Mexico State – small arena), he simply never got up. It’s not clear if there was a doctor at the show – one article says no, another interview with the promoter says the doctor was moving his car at the close of the match and just not at ringside. The promoter did not see any signs something was wrong.

Mixteco started wrestling in 1972, and switched to refereeing in 1990 after injuries.

There’s no full results, but a post on the Box Y Lucha board says La Mascara did retain his CMLL Welterweight Championship over Misterioso in Puebla last night.

Comment answers:

Familia de Tijuana are tecnicos in Tijuana. Or, if not actual tecnicos, at least the relative good guys.

I didn’t see Taguchi’s name in any lineup I saw, so he’s at the very least taking the week off, and I would guess he went home but don’t haven’t read that specifically.

My guess is the Rey/Ultimo break up is a lot like Mascara Magica. Maybe you do a match (and loss) to Mistco as a setup, but Ultimo, Atlantis and Olimpico just turn on him after one too many losses, and next week he’s hanging out with Wagner and Mistico.

10/03 news

(this is the longest post ever? maybe.)

CMLL (FRI) 09/30 Arena Mexico Results [CMLL]
1) Tigre Blanco, Tigre Metalico, Tony Rivera b Flecha, Super Comando, Artillero
Tony got Super Comando with a Gory Special for the win.
2) Maximo, Sagrado, Texano Jr. b Pandilla Guerrera (Sangre Azteca, Nitro, Dr. X)
the unlikely tecnico trio challenged for a title shot after the match. They’ll get it next week.
3) Universo 2000, Mascara Ano 2000, Pierroth DQ Perros Del Mal (Hijo del Perro Aguayo, Damian 666, Halloween)
Aguila returned to cause the DQ and join the Perros del Mal.
4) Hiroshi Tanahashi & Shinsuke Nakamura b GdI (Ultimo Guerrero & Rey Bucanero) [IWGP TAG]
Dragon suplex to end it. O’Campo is very high on this match, and I’ve finally learned what “olympic bridge” means, so it’s good all around.
5) Mistico, Dr. Wagner Jr., El Hijo del Santo b GdA (Atlantis, Ultimo Guerrero, Tarzan Boy)
Mask ripping, Evil Monito, crazy multiperson moves, Wagner beating up Evil Monito, Wagner cheating for the win – truly, a odd main event. CMLL doesn’t mention boos, but O’Campo clearifies that they were aimed at Dr. Wagner Jr.

Here’s the thing: I hate CMLL booking more than ever at the moment, but I can’t find the right way to express it.

They are building up one single main event level match at the moment – Atlantis vs Dr. Wagner with both masks on the line – and it’s the match they’re positively sure they can’t do. In the process of fixing everything for those guys, they’ve

- Knocked down all of GdI a notch. I’m sure I’m taking this much to seriously, but the minute you change the name to Guerreros de Atlantida, it seems to me you’re saying Atlantis so much of a bigger star than those four, his name has to go over the top of them, and all the things they’ve done don’t mean all that much, because they’re still lesser than Atlantis. I understand you want to get over the effect and importance of the Atlantis’ turn (and maybe Atlantis IS a bigger star than Ultimo, Rey and Tarzan and lack of evidence and my own bias won’t let me see it), but doing at the price of margnalizing one of the most successful rudo acts from the last few years seems a bit much.

- Rey vs Ultimo has kicked off as a subplot, a footnote. “Oh, by the way, the greatest tag team of the last half decade aren’t seeing eye to eye anymore – but forget that, because ATLANTIS IS A RUDO!!!!!!” I want to write 2000 word (critically panned) essays about how Rey as tecnico, Ultimo as rudo is the best possible dynamic at this moment, but I’m not all together sure if they forget they were doing the breakup anymore. The breakup is so important, they don’t even bother following up on it! This would be the biggest crime possible, if they next thing didn’t happen.

- They put Mistico in a position to get booed. MISTICO. BOOED. I need some higher level of capitalization to properly express my shock and anger. They’ve done a great great thing with Mistico, and they’re verging on messing it all up. I know the nickname’s been used, but Mistico is the Truth, and you don’t [screw] with the Truth.

I think, maybe, if Atlantis was a guy I liked seeing, I might be a bit softer on all this. He’s in the group of CMLL guys who, once you’ve seen twice, you never need to see again in your entire lifetime, because they’re not doing anything different; they’re not going to add anything new and they’re not going to change styles depending on the opponent. Atlantis is going to give you the opening mat exchange (if there’s not a brawl), find some filler in between, do a few tilt-a-whirl backbreakers, and put someone up in the Atlantida for the finish. And that’s it – he’s permanently stuck in Arena Coliseo main event gear.

(To be fair, Dr. Wagner was the same way before the tecnico team. Ironically like Shawn Michaels, the Doctor could step it up in Big Match Situations, but since those are so few and far in between, you didn’t get to see it much. Maybe the rudo turn will awaken something in Atlantis, and maybe you should decide for yourself how you feel about Atlantis.)

What I really want CMLL to do, and what I’m sure they have no intention of doing, is either announce the date, the place, and the time they’ll be fighting mask for mask (and Atlantis can win, for all I care at this point, just to get it over), or announce that they’re never ever going to do that match, and stop booking them against each other in Mexico City. Someone could jump to AAA to make it easier, if they’d like, but we’re at an impasse, and nothing will get done until it’s resolved. Just stop focusing on it.

I’m guessing Ke Monito as rudo gets old in about a month or so.

My other problem is Mr. Aguila. Look, I’m fond of ex-Essa Rios; you can find many matches of me marking out over his WWF B-Show work around this very site if you take the time to look. But his jump and addition to Perros del Mal illustrates a large problem

Perro del Mal members
* El Hijo del Perro Aguayo
* Hector Garza
* Terrible
* Tarzan Boy (we think – even he’s not sure)
* Halloween
* Damian 666
* Blue Demon Jr. (we think – even the magazine’s not sure)
* Mr. Aguila

This is the panel where Damain says “What are we going to do with ocho Perros?” What are you going to do? Even assume Blue Demon doesn’t show for a while and FdT disappear, that’s a five man stable, and you might note a lack of a ten man tag matches in Arena Mexico in the last sixty some years. Perhaps Perro knows something I don’t. (Well, I’m sure of that, but anyway.)

Even more to the point, you’ve got 5 or 8 guys grouped together in a (seemingly) hot group, and they’re not actually doing much. They were feuding with the Casas’s (Casas’? Casases? Casi!), but that’s dropped. They’re feuding with the Capos and Pierroth, but that’s not going anywhere new, and it visibly won’t lead to a match till they decide they want to do another major show but lack a decent main event. Even then, there’s not enough rivals for all these guys to have something to do, until you start reaching – is really worth paying Mr. Aguila to match him up against Salsero? Wouldn’t you like a little more for your investment?

Having Mr. Aguila is a good thing, and he fits with the group (though I keep waiting for them to pull out an AAA flag while Tarzan gets even more confused). However, after debuting, what else can he possible do?

(Off the top of my head, I’m thinking he might have worked better as a face; he’s got the history with Ultimo, so you could pair him up with Wagner and Mistico against Ultimo, Atlantis, and Olimpico (as Mistico’s rival, and maybe unmask him) – he’d have an actual role, and it’d be a fresh face on the tecnico side. They could use those. And maybe while Santo’s around, he could resume his feud with Perro by teaming with Pierroth and the Capos. I don’t know how the crowd would take that, but it’d freshen up those matches as well. Eh, not gonna happen.)

This adds to the CMLL’s problem of having just too many guys to select from, and not going anywhere with most of them. You’ve got the Atlantis stuff, you’ve got this Perros/Capos stuff, the NJPW guys are gone but the women will be back sooner or later – they’ve created a situation where even if, say, Sangre Azteca blew people away on the anniversary show and this week and they geniunely wanted to move him up on the card, there’s no room to actually do that. Adding Mr. Aguila on the Perros side locks in a spot most weeks (you gotta figure he’s gotten assurances he’ll get booked regularly, or why jump?), and that’s one more (higher level) spot no one else is going to get. Unless they really are going to bust out that AAA flag, or he’s ending up in a feud with Ultimo again, whatever Mr. Aguila is going to add at this point (fill out trios matches, wear questionable tights) could’ve been done with Sangre or Misterioso or Super Comando or whomever, not only cheaper, but with the added benefit of finding out how well they work among higher level guys on a regular basis. You know what you’re getting from Aguila, but you don’t know what you’re getting from the midcarders, and despite the job Mistico’s done, they seem very intent on never finding out.

Truly, none of this should be any surprise to you or me. The booking typically is directionless when they’re out of the range of a big show and don’t already have a hot angle. CMLL always bring in outsiders and leapfrog them over undercard guys without giving them a true chance to prove (or disprove) themselves. They always marginalized those who’ve built themselves up recently to those who are older stars and are mostly living off their names, beacuse they feel they draw better. And they always tease matches they have no actual plan of delivering. None of this is the slightest bit new. Maybe it all coming together on one card was a bit much.

(Okay, now I’m really stuck on the idea of “adding semi-new blood to the Capos/Pierroth side to make the war with the Perros far more compelling.” Not the Anonymous Goon concept with the Pierroth Family – having the Capos bring in Misterioso II on a trial basis, looking for him to prove he can brawl as well as he can fly, would add new dimensions to an immensely repetitive matchup.)

You know, CMLL now has Hector Garza, Mr. Aguila, and Heavy Metal. If they just can get Abismo Negro over (and Hector can sneak into the country undetected), TNA can book the Team Mexico concept again!

On a Sunday indy show in Arena Lopez Mateos, there’s someone in the main event working under the main “Rokambole”, which is the name Villano III and Villano V used before adopting those identities.

Galeno del Mal (who seems to always post the top three match results soon after they happen), on the Box Y Lucha forum, says Mr. Aguila appeared with Perros del Mal tonight.

Sounds like, incredibly, the crowd turned back for Atlantis now that he’s turned on them – and booed Wagner, Mistico, and Santo. I need a second review on that.

In the IWRG match, the champs retain. Traditional lucha three falls match, coming down to Rey and Tanahashi in the final fall, and Tanahashi got the Dragon Suplex for the win.

09/30 news

It’s Friday, so the only Ovaciones article is the Arena Mexico preview. Of note, Tarzan all for Atlantis as a rudo and partner, as long as he doesn’t screw up tonight.

In the newest Blue Demon comic, he’s getting beat down by…Los Perros del Mal, Hector Garza and el Hijo del Perro Aguayo. (But they’re his friends! I suspect mind control or a misunderstanding.)

There’s speculation over on the Box Y Lucha board that the season ending show will be on 12/09.

La Mascara will (attempt to) defend his CMLL Welterweight Title at least twice next week: Monday in Puebla vs Misterioso II and Wednesday in Tampico versus Sangre Azteca.

There’s a rumor that Pantera was in a car accident, but I haven’t seen it offically confirmed anywhere.

Edit: Ernesto O’Campo says there was a car accident. While Pantera and his 13 year old son were not seriously hurt, Pantera’s 9 year old son passed away. Condolences to his family.

Not sure if I’ll be around tonight. There should be results up by noon tommorow.

Lucha Times

Saturday: Split feed; West Coast gets it four hours late. Heavy Metal vs Halloween main events, still in the middle of the Perro/Casas stuff. The opening Colise trio doesn’t look bad.

Sunday: Rerun of Mistico/Ultimo. Though it’s not accurately listed on the site, it looks like the pregame for the U17 championship starts 5 miutes befor the hour for the West Coast feed – so if you miss the finish of the match, don’t look at me.

I so need to catch up on watching stuff.

3) Brazo de Platino & Brazo de Oro b Ryu Taguchi & Okumura
4) Ultimo Guerrero & el Hijo de Cien Caras DQ Mistico & LA Park
Ultimo low blowed Mistico, then faked a low blow and got the refs to buy it.

The 10/20 Santo anniversary show is a Lucha 2000 promotion. People Santo’s beat for their masks who are on the card: Scorpio Jr., Cuchillo, Hijo del Cobarde, Kato Kung Lee, Super Parka, Dr. Cerbero, Hijo del Espanto and Silver King (!). Like the last Lucha 2000 show, they’ll allow them to wear the masks for the night.

Ovaciones has the greatest filler preview of a show ever. They know La Guerra de Titanes is happening, but they talk about how they don’t know what date it’ll happen, where it’ll happen, if it’ll be the last AAA show of the year, or what will main event it. And that’s the whole article.

Halcon #29 is up. Inside:
- interview with Olimpico. He says he wrestled as Popcatl el Inmortal for his first year of wrestling, and has been Olimpico for the last 12. He felt he was going nowhere as a tecnico, so he turned. In his view, his injury happened because he didn’t grab the top rope on his way over, causing him to lose control of his dive. But that’s part of the job, which has taken him places he’d never thought he’d go. He was pretty happy with how fast he returned. His current goal is to beat up on the Casas family.
- Arena Mexico recap.
- Interview with Tigre Blanco. He’s been wrestling for ten years, and hopes he and Metalico get a title shot soon.
- LLF recap.
- Talk about the results of a Mano Negra, Rambo, Cuchillo vs Matematico, Villano II, Super Astro match from 09/18.
- Q&A with Tigre Metalico. His best match was teaming with Tigre Blanco vs Guerrero del Futuro and Mogur
- Posters of Santo and Tiger Jeet Singh
- Notes. There’s a pic of Latin Lover winning the Dancing show.

09/27 news

Ovaciones now has a different card for Friday’s Arena Mexico show.

4) Hiroshi Tanahashi & Shinsuke Nakamura vs GdI (Olimpico & Rey Bucanero) [IWGP TAG]
5) Mistico, Dr. Wagner Jr., El Hijo del Santo vs GdA (Atlantis, Ultimo Guerrero, Tarzan Boy)

The Mistico match now makes a lot more sense, but that’s a much lesser IWGP Tag match. CMLL.com makes no mention of a change, and as you’ll see the Box Y Lucha interviews, Dr. Morales was under the impression the original match was the one that was being run. Either something that changed over the weekend or someone screwed up. Or both, I guess.

EDIT: CMLL.com confirms the match changes. suck suck suck.

There’s a Paucha preview, quick deferring words about Atlantis from Ultimo and Rey, and a mention of Negro and Felino’s IWGP JR TAG match. Trhy’re mentioned as heading over on 10/03, so I assume they’re working sometime besides the 10/08 Tokyo Dome show.

Ovaciones hints towards an Averno/Santo rivalry based on Averno pulling of his mask during the GP. Santo will also be a special 10/20 Arena Coliseo show (a Thursday, so it’s probably not CMLL booked) for his 23rd anniversary as a wrestler. Mil Mascaras, Villano III, Blue Panther, and a whole bunch of people Santo’s beaten for their masks are expected to be present.

Box Y Lucha updated sometime after the Metro chat. Inside #2773
- Championship Poster of Marcela
- Quick Santo bio
- Interview with Nakamura and Tanahashi about the title match. They’re #1 in the world, and Ultimo and Rey will see.
- Interview with Rey and Ultimo about the title match. They’re #1 and the belts are staying in Mexico.
- AAA recap. For what it’s worth, they do mention a disturbance, but only after the main event when Chessman tried to leave without getting his head shaved.
- Interview with Martha Villalobos. Among other things, she seems pleased women’s wrestling returned to Arena Mexico.
- Interview with Zumbido, who wants it clear he was never gone from AAA. He goes on to thank everyone he can think of for being in wrestling.
- Interview with Tarzan Boy. He’s confused about his dual group membership, he’s disappointed to just be hanging around the periphery, with no sort of rival or title chase. There’s also someone doing a clothing line use his name and image, which he’s not given permission for, and he’s not very pleased about that.
- Pentagon Black talks about his start in wrestling.

Talk to Metro

Now that Box Y Lucha’s working for me, I can tell you they have a chat with Metro at 2pm today. Ask him where his push went! Ask him how he feels about Sexy Boy taking his spot in the Strippers Trio! Ask him if Mil’s mad he’s wearing a similiar mask!

I know I should have something better to do than particpate in that, but we’ll see.

Update: You’re missing even less than the nothing I was expecting, because Metro’s late. I think he might be stuck in traffic, which would be astoundingly great. They’re trying to reach him on his cell.

He’s HERE. They’ve got a exciting webcam of Metro using a computer at http://www.boxylucha.com/webcam/

Quick Notes: I’ve been paying slight attention to it, but it’s dragging on and I’m about to take off, so here’s what I got.

- Maximo hopes to be champion in the next year.
- He’s also working as a weightlifting instructor at a gym.
- He was a Mr. Mexico Juvinile (bodybuilding) champion in ’84. He’s older than I figured. He says he’s been in sports ten years, and started out playing (US-style) football.
- Metro’s original trainer was Blue Demon. Now he’s working with Tony Salazar. He’s been wrestling for two years, and he figures his main rival is Hector Garza. Or maybe that’s just his dream match. He’s trying to get better.
- He danced around being Fabian el Gitano previously. Many of the chatters were obssessed upon this point.
- He’s still working on getting a trio started with himself, Bronco and Texano Jr., but they need to be booked as a trio by CMLL to actually get it over.
- He’s got the same basic aspirations as most undercard lucha guys – get better, wrestle internationally.
* I asked him who’d he likes watching the most – he says the Rock and Mil Mascaras. (HENCE THE MASK. Okay maybe not) Who doesn’t want to be the Rock?
* I asked him what he thought about Atlantis’ action – Metro thought Atlantis was great as a tecnico or a rudo
- Metro’s picking GdI over Nakamura/Tanahashi.

There’s not a lot of interesting things to ask Metro – he hasn’t been around long, he hasn’t done much, and previous gimmick stuff was not going to be acknowledged.
