2005 Tapatia Ideas

Tapatia - via luchawikiWe’re NOT voting yet, or probably not even till December. This is just an early warning to give you time to think about it (and because it’s Friday and I’ve got not enough to do.) We’ll try a nomination thread before voting as well, so hold off on hyping particular people until then, though feel free to discuss – one of things that prompted this is an internal debate over who’s the Mexican Wrestler of the Year.

I want to emphaize, I don’t want to limit this just to people who’ve watched every single tape over the last year, because it would just be Robert giving his opinions. Personally, I know there will be plenty of lucha I won’t get time to see, unless I quit my job. If you feel you’re familiar with what’s gone on, go ahead and vote.

Here’s last year’s winners, in case you’ve forgetten.

Best Wrestler: L.A. Park
Best Match: 09-03 Averno vs Zumbido
Best Tecnico: L.A. Park
Best Rudo: Hector Garza
Best Tag Team: Ultimo & Rey
Best Trio: GdI
Best Promotion: CMLL
Best Rivalary: Santo vs Perro Aguayo
Best Legend: Santo
Most Improved: Olimpico
Most Underrated: Olimpico

Legend was any wrestler over 40. As last year, anything from 2004 which didn’t turn up on Gala to 2005 is eligible, as well as stuff which hasn’t aired on GALA yet but you’ve seen.

Thoughts on new categories or changes? Now’s the time to sell me on ideas I wouldn’t listen to last year.

I’m only listening to “Best Rookie” if you can give me 8 guys we can agree on being rooks. That’s your challenge.

I think I’m changing Underrated to “Under Utilized”.

Best Outsider, perhaps?

I’m not too high on Tag Team/Trios awards, because those have been relatively dead categories this year. I can guess the winners, but it’s a By Default situation mostly.

I’m thinking about adding “Best non-CMLL wrestler” and “Best non-CMLL match”, just because I want more AAA/IWRG/Tijuana/wherever action to be represented.

Feel free to throw an off the wall suggestion in. I’m gonna listen to anything.

11/04 news

CMLL (WED) 11/02 Arena Xalapa Results [halcon]
1) Aguila de Plata & Trueno b GMC & Farzas Boy
2) Angel de Futuro & Neutron b Shot Killer & Lasserman
3) Amapola & La Nazi b Sahora & India Sioux Marcela
4) Tigre King, Samuray, Jaguar b Cabellero negro Jr., Perro Mocho, Perro Mocho Jr.
5) Terrible Black Bul, Eslabon, Scorpio Jr. b Villano III, Negro Casas, Caballero Ninja
Bloody match. Villano III and Bestia challenged each other to a No DQ match next week.
6) Dr. Wagner Jr. & Mistico b Atlantis & Ultimo Guerrero
Third fall finished with the “everyone pulls someone else’s mask” finish for a DDQ, but this time, they added a forth fall with the tecnicos winning.

CMLL (FRI) 11/04 Arena Mexico Lineup [cmll]
1) Virus, Stuka Jr., Chamaco Valaguez Jr. vs Arkangel, Hooligan, Apocalipsis
2) Blue Panther, Satanico, La Mascara vs Mr. Aguila, Jado, Misterioso II
Ovaciones notes how Misterioso is floating between sides.
3) Mistico, Ultimo Dragon, Maximo, Sagrado, Atlantis, Mephisto, Hijo de Pierroth, Gedo [LdP Block B]
4) Universo 2000, Ultimo Guerrero, Pierroth vs Hijo del Perro Aguayuo, Damian 666, Halloween
5) Santo, Dos Caras Jr., Hijo de Lizmark vs Canek, Rey Bucanero, Tarzan Boy

This Leyenda de Plata block really just has two people who can win it, and six people who just want to look good before they go out. I believe they don’t want to do Santo vs Mistico yet (and I agree with that), so it’s gotta be Atlantis going over.

Unless dates have since been added, next week is the last week Santo’s due in.

I think we’re heading towards a Cage of Death on the year end show. The feuds are all group versus group, and I can’t think of a more likely option. (I can think of better options, but I don’t think we’re getting them.)

Mephisto will put up his CMLL Welterweight Championship versus Heavy Metal on Tuesday in Coliseo. Sounds like there will be a Negro/Felino vs GdA match on the undercard.

Arena Puebla’s Monday main event next week is Mistico, Wagner, Metal and Negro versus Mr. Aguila, Ultimo Guerrero, Rey Bucanero, and Tarzan Boy. Tarzan actually might have to make a decision.

CMLL #178

07/09 Lucha

Outside of the crazy Volador piledriver, this was really just the Shocker/Wagner match. I don’t know if it’s a MOTYC, but i do know it’s pretty fun.

If nothing else comes up, I plan on getting another recap done tommorow. One a week just keeps up the backload.

Lucha Times

Quickly…

Saturday: West Coast feed has a delay. Unless we’re alternating between AAA and CMLL (possible), prepare for Ultimo Guerrero vs Dos Caras Jr. on back to back weeks.

Sunday: Normal times. Assuming they don’t skip this episode (should’ve aired last week, but nothing did), celebrate Sangre Azteca’s 2 match winning streak in NJPW with his Mexican Trios Championship win.

elHalconNet #43 is up
- 4 page review/pictures of TNA Bound For Glory. There was a bit in the Observer this week, about TNA trying to continue to book Samoa Joe versus International Stars for the next PPV (and maybe as a continuing thing.) They tried Ultimo Dragon and ROH/UK wrestler Nigel McGuiness, but neither were available at that time. Jeff Jarrett suggested Abismo Negro, but that idea was rejected. Too bad, because I never loved Jarrett more than suggesting Abismo vs Samoa. (They’re going in a different direction for the match instead.)
- Part two of the interview with O’Campo. When he saw Dark Angel for the first time, he knew she was the women who could start a Women’s Wrestling boom in Mexico. He passed around photos and a DVD of her while in Japan last December, and it eventually got to the AtoZ promoter, which is how she made it there – Ernesto wants it clear that it wasn’t CMLL or fans pretending to be her manager who got her this booking. Interviewer asks about any relationship between O’Campo and Dark Angel, and O’Campo says it’s the responsibility of a good lucha journalism to push for deserving people who aren’t getting enough attention, as he has with Super Crazy, Crazy Boy, and Ricky Marvin. He specifically takes credit for turning Damian’s image from a semi-comedic wrestler to a Extreme Icon by publicizing his FMW-style work in XLAW. O’Campo also basically says he highlighted her in magazines, because he felt the more she was seen, the more magazines she’s be worth next time she was on the cover, and there’s no other relationship going on.

(I disagree with all of this on so many levels, but I think it’s a bit of a snow job to begin with, so I don’t care much about voicing it.)

O’Campo doesn’t like Luchas 2000 (they fake the interviews, sometimes getting the wrestlers in trouble for their fake words), Box Y Lucha is okay but he no longer buys it, and Guerreros del Ring has no content. He brushes off ‘purists’ complaints that new guys aren’t as good as the old guys, because he’s gone back to articles from years ago, and read people complaining that these old guys weren’t as good as the older guys.
- Arena Mexico results
- Jeque interview. If you ever wanted a good picture of the Star of David on his mask, this is the interview for you. He says he worked under other names, but does not mention them. He was thinking about calling himself Rey Jeque, but figured it’d be redundant.
- Notes. AAA is headed to Honduras on 12/1 for a show. Atlantis is still wrestling tecnico in some places.
- Starman poster
- short El Hijo Santo bio
- Rankings! Danger, not rated anywhere before, is actually 8th in Lightweight, and 9th in Welterweight. How odd. Anyway, Mistico was wrestler of the month, and I’ll have more as soon as I figure out what I did last month.
- More people who lost their masks.

11/02 news

Konnan accidentally low blowed Vampiro.

Rudos turned on each other.
6) Atlantis b Dos Caras
Two falls, fast match, low blow in the final fall.

Got busy today when I typically work on this.

Ovaciones has the usual Arena Aficion (Pachuca) preview. The Volador/Misterioso/Mascara trio is nicknamed the Air Force, but the writer reminds us that last Misteroso and Mascara were in a main event here, they were on opposite sites of the ring as part of the Wagner/Atlantis feud.

The other article is an interview with Atlantis, previewing tonight’s Coliseo show and his win on Friday in the Leyenda de Plata. I’m just assuming he’s winning the whole tournament at that this point. Do you realize this means he’s going over Mistico this Friday (which would be his only second singles loss in Arena Mexico, if I’m recalling correct – probably not clean, but still, would you’ve bet on Atlantis doing it?), and Santo next Friday (no point in Santo winning). That’s heck of a lot of makeup for not winning Wagner’s mask.

Monday, Ultimo Guerrero, Olimpico and Mephisto signed autographs outside of Arena Mexico, in a charity deal for the Mexican victims of Hurricanes Wilma and Stan. Not I usually hear much about hurricanes which don’t hit the US, but there’s been so many of them this year, I don’t think I knew there even was a Hurricane Stan till this article.

Box Y Lucha has archived Mascara Sagrada chat on their site – watch out for the immediate sound. From what I read, there’s not too much you don’t know. He’s happy for Mascarita Sagrada making it in WWE (though it sure seems like it was only a one week thing.)

Super Lucha cover. Lovely blood. Didn’t realize they changed forums.

Rey, Tarzan and Olimpico are the scheduled video chatters this Thursday.

Watched the highlights from Friday. It’s Averno who’s stretchered out, due to Santo. Does look like Safari under the mask. It’s a weird way to debut anyone, and if his old partners Atlantis and Olimpico can turn heel without changing their gimmicks, I don’t know why Safari needs a new one.

I also remembered I taped Accion; highlights were of Santo/Casas (nothing you don’t see from the videos) and a clip of Vampiro/Zorro vs Shocker/Charly (I guess Shocker’s working lone wolf), with Hator running into to help his LLL partner and Shocker hitting Zorro with a chair when he maybe (and it’s a reach) wanted to get Charly or Hator.

10/31 news

They’re celebrating in the streets of Mexico City, for Sangre Azteca has won a match in New Japan!!! He beat Akiya Anazwa earlier today via a reverse armbar in 5:47. Starman lost on the show, which is actually an improvement from being left off the card as he has the last few shows.

CMLL (FRI) 10/28 Arena Mexico Results [cmll]
1) Bam Bam & Ultimo Dragoncito b Mini Violencia & Sombria
2) Sagrado, Virus, Metro b Dr. X, Mr. Mexico, Loco Max
3) Jado, Okumura, Loco Max b Heavy Metal, Felino, Maximo vs
4) Hijo del Santo won Block A of the 2005 Leyenda de Plata tournament. Order of Elimination:
- Hombre Sin Nombre
Thanks for coming.
- La Mascara by Jado
Stretchered out.
- Volador Jr.
- Misterioso II
- Jado
- Averno
- Negro Casas
Negro and Santo both were pinned when one applied a tapatia and leaned back, but the commission restarted the match so we’d have a winner. Santo got a camel clutch for the win. Atlantis is almost certainly winning this Friday.
5) Universo 2000, Ultimo Guerrero, Rey Bucanero DQ Hijo del Perro Aguayo, Hector Garza, Terrible
Damian and Halloween helped attack the other team. Two straight brawls for falls – Universo took the first with a surpirse small package on Perro, and rudos got DQed in the second. Universo, Ultimo and Rey were left laying. Looks as if they’ve set up the main feud to be GdA & Capos & Pierroth vs Perros. No idea on Tarzan.

CMLL (SUN) 10/30 Arena Coliseo Lineup [box y lucha]
1) Sombra de Plata & Rayo Tapatio I b Polvora & Vaquero
2) Flecha, Jeque, Guerrero del Futuro b Neutron, Kronos, Trueno
3) Virus, Brazo de Oro, Crazzy Boy b Mr. Mexico, Hooligan, Apocalipsis
Ovaciones liked the antics of Crazzy Boy
4) Olimpico, Averno, Mephisto b Lizmark, Felino, Safari
Ovaciones said the tecnico team made “many errors.”
5) Dos Caras Jr., Hijo de Lizmark, Black Warrior b Atlantis, Ultimo Guerrero, Halloween
As might be reasonable, Atlantis and Ultimo didn’t want to team with Halloween. The rudos managed to keep it together for a fall, but eventually it was Halloween who turned on the other two, helping the tecnicos win.

There was an interview with Crazzy Boy in Saturday’s Ovaciones. He’s been training with Satanico in hopes of being a more solid wrestler; trying to fit his style in CMLL’s context. He really hopes to get on an Arena Mexico card.

CMLL.com says the last Arena Mexico show of the year will either be 12/02 or 12/09, which is a week or two earlier than typical. They don’t hint as towards a main event (which means they probably don’t know), but I’m betting they shoot the angle on the 11/11 show either from the LdP final (probably Atlantis b Santo) or something elsewhere on the card.

They’re apparently running the Arkangel/Fantastik feud Ark alluded to last week on the Arena Neza shows. Wish we were still getting lineups or results from there.

Today’s Monday afternoon (2PM CSTish) Box Y Lucha chat is with Mascara Sagrada. I have nothing funny or interesting to say to him.

I feel like I’m forgetting something, but oh well.
