Mexico Preview, Perros del Mal, AAA movie (but not that one), IWRG tournament, Vampiro

Preview of tonight’s Arena Mexico show: ESTO, Notimex, SuperLuchas.

Not a lot new; more Ultimo Guerrero vs Strong Man, more Hijo de Avernos/No Limit. There should be something new coming out of it – either one or both of those feuds should probably announce a date for their big matches.

Perros del Mal is back on TV. Sort of. They’ve announced on their facebook that they’ll be airing at different times in different cities; I assume this is just a second half of hour of the previous taping.

The list

Veracruz Canal 5: Saturday, 18:20
Monterrey Canal 34: Saturday, 17:30
Guadalajara Canal 4: Saturday, 18:00
Puebla Canal 3: Saturday (?), 18:20

No mention of Mexico City. They all seem to be regional Televisa stations. It’ll be neat for the people who get to see it, but I can’t believe it’ll have any affect on their business. (Website STILL not updated.) Oh well.

Will AAA’s plans reinvigorate the concept of lucha libre films? There’s talk in this article of putitng AAA stars in real movies, saying people don’t want to see luchadors face vampires or monsters, but social issues. Isn’t the big bad guy in the anime a giant evil robot, and most of the characters spend the movie traveling thru time? Shouldn’t someone have done the slightest bit of research to see WWE hasn’t made money from it’s film division? What is clear is, sometime a couple years ago, someone in AAA made a checklist of everything WWE tries, and is just crossing things off.

Anyway, the goal is to produce a new movie by the end of 2010. Adjusting that for AAA standards, that probably means mid of 2011. There’s absolutely no mention of the movie they’re currently working on and advertising, which is very odd.

IWRG will be running a torneo El Pirata Moreno sometime next month.

La Columnaria Blog has a story on Vampiro’s appearance on V3 television. Vampiro talked about his life, like having to wrestle 37 matches in one week at his peak. The recap goes straight from cutting off his braids to joining the Guardian Angels, so it must’ve been a short one.

The Color + Design Blog has color themes based on lucha libre.

La Parka Jr. visited a Make a Wish kid. AAA will be doing autograph signings

Ohtani’s Jacket enjoys the high quality and quantity of mat work in Blue Panther vs Atlantis from the Cops Victoria final in 1997.

LuchaWorld has the newest Slammin’ Stan Episode 19. I’m a little behind on listening, but I can not believe Kurt Brown has not heard the William Shatner album. I don’t know if Kurt would totally hate it or totally love it, but he would definitely have strong feelings about it.

  1. The El Santo vs. Zombies color scheme was the first color scheme for Slambamjam.com. LOL! I had no idea.

Kurt didn’t even get the intro song. Very disappointing.:(

  2. Konnan forcing Pena to leave CMLL or Vampiro working 37 matches in a week… hmmm… it’s a tough one but I think Santa Claus exisiting is more likely than those two things.

  3. I’m wondering if the Perros will run the first half hour show in those places since it won’t have aired in any of them yet. Hopefully it is the second half hour though and someone grabs it for youtube. Since PdM seems to push that type of thing out on their facebook page, it is probably the best way for them to be seen by more people. Of course it would be more impressive if they just put the shows online themselves since presumably they own the video.

  4. Of course Ocampo f’cked up the ratings in his report. he assumed the “share’ was the Mexico City rating. That’s why I think it’s easier to simply put up the national rating, and that’s it. Too much info is not good. It confuses people.

  5. I’m just finishing up listening to the Slammin Stan podcast.

Hey Dr. Lucha and Stan, there’s a guy named Barry Rose who is a Florida wrestling historian. He should know who put out the Florida insider sheet in the mid-70’s.

About that other insider sheet from the 1987 time period that had hundreds of results, I subscribed to it for a few weeks, and forget the name, but it came from Ohio. The guy would get newspapers clippings of WWE ads from all over the country. At the time WWE did tons of newspaper advertising. He’d have results from just about every venue.

Do you guys remember the old NWF territory in the Northeast(circa 1987, 1988). They had local tv, and ran with feuds like Abdullah The Butcher vs. Bruiser Brody, DC Drake vs. Larry Winters, and Misty Blue vs. Linda Dallas. For bigger shows, they’d bring in Sgt. Slaughter vs. Iron Sheik. In many ways, NWF was the predecessor of Joel Goodhart and ECW.

  6. Hey Bix, I heard you say you’ll be at the Woodside show. Wait until you see how small the club is. You’ll see why they have to charge so much.

The owner of the club does not even have the date on his website zamoraentertainment.com but I think he’s just renting the place.

  7. TDN gets the women and the lightning match this week. I didn’t think either were anything special.

No Rey Buc on commentary this week, but they did have some old looking dude named “Shoker” who kept talking about Guapos.

  8. The other day I was watching the Bucanero vs Efesto match from May and I think I saw you during one of the crowdshots, Alan. I remember you attended that show. Perhaps you can verify whether you were in that huge group of Niebla fans that began smelling each other’s armpits. CONFIRM OR DENY?

  9. @Rob: The singles match? I didn’t go to that show, I saw the trios match a Sunday or two before at Coliseo.

But, I’m not hard to pick out if the camera catches me. I’m the gringo with bushy red hair and generally some sort of absurd facial hair.

  10. @Alan: Definitely wasn’t you then. I thought I remembered you telling us there was a title change and Bucanero might have been hurt during the match.

  11. I’m glad to see them book Terrible & Texano against No Limit and not Averno/Mephisto – not only would T’n’T gain more by winning it also makes the outcome semi-unpredictable. Good move on CMLLs part
