Okumura (?) wins Gran Alternativa, UG beats Liger, Charly

CMLL (FRI) 09/25 Arena Mexico [SuperLuchas, Record, Cesar, Fuego en el ring
1) Flash, Metro, Stuka Jr. b Arkangel de la Muerte, Loco Max, Skándalo
2) Pierrothito b Eléctrico [MEX LIGHT]
3) Ephesto, Mephisto, Texano Jr. b La Máscara, Toscano, Volador Jr.
4) Ángel de Plata & Héctor Garza b Averno & Pólvora [Gran Alternativa, torneo, quarterfinal]
5) Shigeo Okumura & Yujiro b Rouge & Toscano [Gran Alternativa, torneo, quarterfinal]
6) Ángel de Oro & Místico b Atlantis & Camorra [Gran Alternativa, torneo, quarterfinal]
7) Mr. Niebla & Tiger Kid b Blue Panther & Rey Cometa [Gran Alternativa, torneo, quarterfinal]
8) Shigeo Okumura & Yujiro b Ángel de Plata & Héctor Garza [Gran Alternativa, torneo, semifinal]
10) Ángel de Oro & Místico b Mr. Niebla & Tiger Kid [Gran Alternativa, torneo, semifinal]
11) Shigeo Okumura & Yujiro b Ángel de Oro & Místico [Gran Alternativa, torneo, final]
12) Último Guerrero b Jushin Liger [CMLL HEAVY]

They had Toscano work the tercera, and then he had to come back and work the tournament too. Rough.

All 8 novatos were introduced for the tournamnet (and the seeding battle royal). When Semental entered, Yujiro showed up as well. Yujiro said he was now refusing to team with non-Japanesse and wanted Okumura in the spot instead. Semental refused to give up his spot, but Okumura & Yujiro beat him up, and Okumura entered the tournament in his spot.

Ages of Gran Alternativa winners, oldest to youngest.

(We don’t have birthdates on Chicago Express and, surprisingly, Misterioso II. )

years names
17.65 La Sombra
21.66 Místico
22.33 Rey Bucanero
23.48 La Mascara
23.65 Shocker
24.54 Tony Rivera
25.17 Sicodelico Jr.
25.19 Tigre Blanco
25.55 Hector Garza
25.61 Alan Stone
25.71 Dragon Rojo Jr.
27.09 Ultimo Guerrero
37.34 Okumura

Man, Sombra was young. Still is. And I forget how close Ultimo Guerrero is to 40. Also the Okumura thing, that too.

Seriously, CMLL, you didn’t need to throw away this tournament like that. If you want to push the non-Lyger trio as a top threat, a threat to Mistico, you could’ve saved some time and heartache and just booked a trios match. No Limit vs Mistico, Panther, and Garza or Toscano or Shocker or not whoever. Do the same ending, have the rudos surprisingly beat Mistico, and save this tournament for a time where you actually might get something out of it. Wasted opportunity, obviously.

Now, I guess CMLL’s ideas here is we’re supposed to be angry, just furious at No Limit and Okumura for taking Semental’s spot and bending the rules like that. It just doesn’t come off that way – it’s more looks like CMLL was completely ineffectual in running it’s own events.

Speaking of, the main event was short enough to probably not be all that notable enough of a match, but long enough that anyone who saw the end of it missed the last train out. This is neither a new problem, nor one CMLL seems interested in fixing, but if the big match yuor’e selling the card around is frequently disappointing because you run out of time to put it on, you’re hurting your return bsuiness. Start the show sooner or run it more efficiently, just figure it out.

This week, Liger won the first in under two, UG won the second in under two, then used the ropes to pin Liger in the third. Liger has another title chance on Monday.

There’s not enough scandals in AAA, so this weekend will see the release of a controversal Konnan interview, AAA’s site proclaims. They do not say who it’s about, but DJ Spectro does: Cibernetico.

Meanwhile, AAA is still threatening legal consequences to Charly Manson (pictured here with Perro Jr. & a shirt…) and refuses to announce a change to the card because they think they can intimidate Charly into showing up, but says they may anyway have an ace up there sleeve like Cibernetico (who’s already on the card) or Latin Lover (who’s not.) I think people will go home from tonight’s show happy, but only if they’re the type of people who enjoy disasters.

Segunda Caida has Cassandro 6th on it’s top wrestlers of 2008 list and watches 03/19/09 IWRG.

Lineups much later.

  1. DOH.

That’s the first time I’ve seen Dorada blow the springboard splits and I always knew it would look embarassing for him b/c there is no way to recover…

  2. @Rob: That being said, Stuka was on the ball coming up with the impromptu roll-up to pin Sangre Azteca in fall #1. That’s real skill to do that.

  3. Cool finish to fall 2 with Sagrado taking a powerbomb/missile dropkick to the “groin” combo and the rudos stomping him over for good measure. This crowd, as small as it is, is really reacting to everything.

  4. Looks like the second episode of Lucha Libre Premier tonight. Fabi and Sexi were in studio for an interview, so maybe they explained the points issue from week 1? Listening to Houston Cougars football, so even if I could have understood what they were saying, I didn’t hear it.

Atomicos are on now, I’m assuming the Corleone match from night 1 will be the main.

  5. Sexi still has -1 at the end of this show. Maybe the ref’s decision was overturned? They went to a very ugly design showing points, ranking, and matches and I couldn’t keep up with the rest of the point standings.

  6. So i’m watching ACM and besides them showing 2 falls of one match and the 3rd fall of another, I notice Gato Volador lost his mask in 06 yet he’s wearing it in this match. I guess this is the Super Astro/Silver King syndrome? Oh and Angel Dorado Jr. really needs to be in CMLL. That guy is awesome.

  7. AAA.com is doing coverage of the show tonight and so far the only big revelation is that if Konnan vs Joaquin Roldan wasn’t enough for you, Dorian Roldan is now getting involved which sets up YEARS of storylines. Konnan vs Roldans, Dorian vs Joaquin, Joaquin/Konnan vs Dorian, Roldans as rudos vs Konnan as tecnico, etc.

  8. “CABELLERA CONTRA CABELLERA: Chessman aparece.

I’m surprised Konnan Big went for that. Maybe he’s getting involved in the finish…

  9. Funny how I just wrote about him changing his name and quitting wrestling then he shows up in AAA minutes later.

  10. AAA website says nothing about Electro actually getting his head shaved although they do say Hijo De Tirantes got shaved…

  11. Looks like another 4+ hour show by AAA. Too long.

Konnan threw powder? LOL. That’s so Mr. Fuji 1984.

I’ll bet AAA does not even pay for Chessman to get sewn up.

  12. I sure as hell hope Lucha Libre Mexicana uploads this as I only caught the 1st match due to having to work :(

  13. @Alan: Maybe AAA is only allowed one new TV show per week. AAA on Gala sems to be Verano de Escandalo. At least the cruiserweight match is on now.

  14. @Alan: Yeah, I was so confused. I triple checked Cubs’ results with Zellner’s news reports to see if there was a missing taping.

This is the 3rd time this match has aired in 4 weeks. *L*

  15. @Alan: This works out for the best because the guy on the Mexican forums who puts the TVC shows online sometimes said he couldn’t record the CMLL show because he likes AAA more. Well now he doesn’t have to make a choice.;)

  16. @Rob: Except now we seem to have moved on to the opener from the Tula taping… Maybe they just thought that they needed to remind everyone that Koslov had won the championship before he left?

  17. This is being billed a CMLL Tour 2009: San Louis Potosi. Maybe this is the tour they were supposed to do this year?

And awesomely, the ring apron is an ad for “Junior’s Mens Club”

  18. @Rob: Was good from what I saw. I’ll confess that I was flipping between AAA, CMLL, and Steelers/Bengals, so I only caught bits of it.

  19. In Puebla news, Policeman’s hair is back to its pre Anniversary length already. In other news, the crowds are also back to their pre Anniversary levels.

Minis are on now, it looks like the segunda was dropped.

  20. @Alan: Meh… I guess that’s acceptable. At least it (hopefully) means the segunda next week will air since it looks like tons of fun.

Figured the minis would be cut b/c of the last minute subs and how matches like that usually become messes.

  21. AAA TV airing a repeat to open the show is explained…

    3) Chessman & Zorro b Charly Manson & Crazy Boy

That didn’t air from the Tula taping. Zorro gets screwed again.

  22. @Rob: Minis were fine. Not their best stuff ever, but good enough to make TV.

I liked this weeks version of the main event better than last weeks. No, not because Naito wasn’t there, but having Panther around for the whole match improved things. Not a bad setup for tomorrow’s title match, so hopefully they put on a good show.

  23. @Rob: Not sure what I would want to see cut next week. Can we all hope that Yujiro refuses to tag with V5 since he is a Mexican?
