Idolo, IWRG Thursday results, Friday notes

Panamanian wrestler el Idolo, Danilo Echavarria, passed away on Wednesday. He was 71, and is said to have retired just 10 years ago. Horacero and TodoSports have obits. Idolo feuded with various Mexican wrestlers back when Panama was a regular touring stop. Idolo won a world championship and was possibly the biggest wrestling star in the history of the company.

IWRG (THU) 08/06 Arena Naucalpan [Estrella del Ring, more photos at Mr. Reyes, the Gladiatores twitter]
1) Blasfemia b Imperial
2) Eragon & Star Boy b Carta Brava Jr. & Heavy Boy
3) Avisman & Fantasma de la Opera b Bushi & Exodia
4) Black Terry, Cerebro Negro, Dr. Cerebro b Barba Roja, Hijo de Pirata Morgan, Pirata Morgan Jr.
5) Negro Navarro, Trauma I, Trauma II b Oficial 911, Oficial AK47, Oficial Fierro

Negro got 911 clean, so they’ll be a title match coming up. In the semi, Hijo de Pirata tossed his mask to Black Terry to take the second fall, so Black Terry got away with a foul in the third fall. Pirates want a title match regardless. There’s got to be a show with all title matches soon. Exodia crashed, burned, and was taken to the back in the third match. Bushi fought the rudos 2 and 1, but Fantasma beat him with a powerbomb and feet on the ropes.

Previews of tonight’s show: El Sol de Cuautla, ESTO – sure tonight is setting up a Mistico vs Felino mask match, LuchandoLibre, Ovaciones. Very amused how Naito’s go to pose now is showing his eye is open. The man may never sleep again.

The storylines to watch are the weird semimain – will Black Warrior get along with his partners to defeat No Limit and Okumura – and Mistico’s win streak in the main event. Misico’s going for 8 tonight. he’ll definitely not be going for 9 next week; he’ll be in Japan for the NJPW shows by then.

LuchandoLibre explains Turbo really does have a different title than Skayde. I just normally assume it’s the same belt and no one’s looking too closely at it, but I guess they both have belts. Obviously, I need to be listening to his show.

Hablando de Catch looks at X-Law’s show Saturday. I guess I need to be linking to these if it’s just two days away.

Fuego en el Ring talks to Metal Blanco, who hopes to follows his old tag team partner Metalik to Mexico City.

Estrellas del ring also has an interview with indy wrestler Mongol.

LuchaWorld has KrisZ’s news update, plus Robert on AAA TripleMania ’08 and CMLL GDL 05/25 & 06/01/08

Ohtani’s Jacket rates Los Infernales (El Satanico/MS-1/Masakre) vs. Rayo de Jalisco Jr./La Fiera/Tony Salazar, CMLL 1987 as one of the best of the 80s.

  1. Explanation of the Naito pose…

Mexicans seem to take racism a little less seriously than the rest of the world. I mean – can you imagine Jim Ross calling Tajiri “a yellow Jap” on RAW? Sure he probably wants to but he knows better than to do it. Yet CMLL is more than happy to name the Japanese crew – La Ola Amarillo and call them ‘Japs’ on commentary. So this ties in with the eye thing b/c Maximo is the one who started doing it b/c he was making fun of Okumura’s slanty eyes. When Okumura would beat Maximo he’d play along and immitate having round eyes (ala what Naito is doing). The crowd caught on to this and began doing it to mock the Japanese crew who would give it right back… i.e. last week’s cage match:

@Alan: Thanks for the link, that was a really fun read. I can’t believe you missed out on EL HOMBRE RATA though! How do you miss a guy with rats crawling on his head???

  2. ByL poster says he saw the especial w/ Vangelis vs Fuerza Aerea on the new Televisa Deportes network tonight. One step closer to live Arena Mexico shows…

  3. @Alan: All accpetable distractions aside from the Sox/Yankees.;)

Cesar is in the middle of typing up his report from tonight. Mentions some fans got into a fight at ringside during the intros to the second match. That seems strange. Not the fighting itself but mainly the location since when is the last time a fight has broken out at ringside where all the “higher class” people are supposed to be sitting?

  4. @Rob: Higher class could mean more of a selection of alcohol to choose from. But seriously, why could’nt this of happened the week CMLL had SpongeBob at the show ? I even bet money that someone would of taken a swing at him. :)

  5. @Rob: I’ve definitely seen people removed by staff from the ringside seats, but not sure I’ve ever actually seen a fight at Arena Mexico.

If TDN ever had anything on their Cablevision schedule besides “Programacion Deportiva” I might be more likely to catch their lucha coverage.

  6. @Calabcd44: Alcohol is obviously a huge factor is fighting but that seems to only be an issue late in the show when people are completely wasted. Fighting before the second match even begins seems like a waste of a night.

  7. It seems the guys in the fight were bikers, so probably, they were invited by someone…

  8. According to ElAlburero’s twitter – TDN aired the first three matches (Guerrilleros, Angeles vs Celestiales, Fuerza Aerea vs Vangelis).

If there is now a source for undercard Arena Mexico matches except nobody gets the channel – I’m gonna be pissed!

  9. @Rob: Chanel is on Cablevision, and i thought I heard it was on Sky too. Just need to find things out with enough notice so that someone can actually catch the shows.

  10. I’d bet most of the people on ByL have SKY or Cablevision so they have the channel, just a question of whether or not they will upload.

Cablevision Monterrey should have the channel soon too, since Televisa owns a piece of it now.

  11. Hey Alan, if you’re awake, try TDN right now. Grid shows “noche de punos” as a repeat of what aired from 9:30 to 11:30.

If not, it airs again at 2p tomorrow.

  12. I’m pretty sure I just saw a video of Dos Jr.’s FCW debut. It was a match with like 30 guys where the rules were everyone tries to get in the ring within a minute and whoever isn’t in the ring is eliminated and whoever makes it in gets to participate in a battle royale.

Dos Jr. never made it in the ring. (~Straight to the main roster!)

Explain to me why all 30 guys wouldn’t just slide into the ring right away to assure themselves a spot in the battle royale?

  13. LOL. I just watched that stupid battle royal after recording it last night. I thought the same thing as you. The fact that he never made it in the ring is a joke.

They’ll figure out a new name for Dos that they can trademark.

  14. Why would he make it to the ring if he hasn’t won a match in FCW I don’t think. I’ll be shocked if he makes the main roster. Looking forward to seeing him tonight at the FCW show.

  15. @Alan: Televisa Networks has a website. Click on “TDN” and you’ll see “Noche de Punos” on the grid.

  16. I’ll give this Metro credit… he’s improving. That’s already a step up from the other guys who did the role.

  17. I watched the 1st part of the FCW batttle royal…LO F’N L!!!! Dos Caras Jr. went from being former CMLL World Champ to not being able to roll into the ring to start a battle royal! WTF!?!

All those guys look the same.

  18. @Tim: They cut Ricky Ortiz after several years of investment and a small push on television. Heck, they just did some FCW spot shows where he was the main eventer and gave away those towels to the “first 100 fans”.

It would be best if Dos left now. He’s not getting a push. CMLL would take him back.

  19. He can’t leave, he signed a contract. Both sides would have to agree to it and I doubt the WWE would let him go so quick before they had the chance to embarass him nationally rather than just in FCW. Also, Dos wouldn’t leave so quick b/c it would show he was a giant failure. If he sticks it out for a while and then gets released he can come back to Mexico with stories about how he was never given a chance and the WWE is racist.
