What happened:

is lucha libre real

About two minutes into the main event, Volador trips on UG, stumbles, falls thru the ropes, and the top rope snaps into his face. Volador’s nose is fractured and bleeds thru the match. His face is covers in blood by the end of the second fall. A medic checks him in between falls. Volador gets some of the blood wiped off, but he’s clearly lost after a superkick spot. Cavernario has to come in to help him up and help talk thru what they’re going to do next.

Volador mistakenly superkicks Cavernario to get him pinned, but UG very much on purpose fouls Volador, and is caught of the DQ. The rudos attack both técnicos after the match to set up the tag match the next week.

Kraneo accidentally splashed Okumura at the end of the second fall and ran over his partners in the third fall, which might have meant as the start of the next few weeks of issues with Okumura, Idol and Adonis. It’s nothing that’s played big in the moment.

Perverso and Rey Apocalipsis have matching gear, as if they’re meant to be a team somewhere.

Centella Roja came to the ring with an Angel Poblana mask. Poblana passed away recently.

Thoughts:

Kraneo boom

It’s impressive the main event had as much as it did to it after Volador was hurt early on. They really could’ve gone home after Volador fell down following his superkick in the first fall and instead with forr about four minutes longer, with Último Guerrero and Volador getting in their usual spots. Cavernario looks great in the match and might have been able to wrestle it one on two had they gone that route. It would’ve been nice if we got more of him in this match, or a real ending. This is the third best version of this match, behind the original and the Best of 2017 match, but it’s fine for a b-show main event.

Soberano pinning Mephisto set up a title match for the next week.

The lightning match was exactly the cut down version of the match you’d expect between the two, with Soberano getting in his dives and tornillo while kicking out of a Devil’s Wings. It’d be nice if there was more there. That’s just not a wise expectation of what these guys are going to do. The moves they did all came off well. Soberano tried to bring the ramp running headscissors back, which hasn’t been seen regularly since Mascara Dorada disappeared. It isn’t quite there yet but the thought is appreciated.

Astro

The fourth was a rare sighting of NGD as técnicos. They were clearly the crowd favorite, and the match was set up for them to get in the técnico moments. Their offense doesn’t feel like técnico offense and they’re not as strong at working with the crowd in that reaction. It didn’t really matter. The fans, especially women, were loudly behind them. The foreigners were doing a lot of holding and hitting on offense and this wasn’t really compelling action.

The tercera was a fine for a b-show match, following the usual formula. Kawato, wrestling along side guys who didn’t have much more experience than him, seemed more comfortable than his prior matches. He was still utterly lost on some Lestat spots before the triple dive, but it felt like progress. Stigma gets more surprise roll ups in Arena Puebla than anyone else does anywhere. Lestat looked better than Malayo in the battle of the guys who can’t get out this building.
