the minis match in one gif

Bengala & Magnus vs Apocalipsis & Inquisidor: An opener. Magnus casually reversed a whip to start the comeback, like it was no thing. (And then Apcalispis took a dropkick horribly.) I wonder if “all openers have to be really boring” is a rule like no diving in the first few matches. Tecnicos deserved better than these rudos. Inquisidor has more of a gut than you’d expect from a guy hauling around fruit all morning.

Raziel kneebar counter

Acero, Aéreo, Bam Bam vs Pequeño Nitro, Pequeño Universo 2000, Pequeño Warrior: Bam Bam actually showed! Bam Bam is feuding with Pequeño Warrior (who wrestled in a green Psicosis outfit for no particular reason except the overwhelming power of the neon green.) Too bad this match was nothing at all, zero highspots. No amount of backcrackers could make it work, though Pequeño Nitro sure tried.

Stigma and Hombre Bala

Hombre Bala Jr., Pegasso, Stigma vs Cancerbero, Raziel, Sangre Azteca: Much better than the previous match in that it was exciting at all. It was actually better than that low compliment. Rudos were effective killing machines and Stigma & Bala looked great on their triple dive. Bala was throwing himself around and into people, especially on his big fall to the outside in the third fall. Raziel’s reversal into the finish was nice.

Dragon Lee vs Cavernario in a En Busca de un Idolo match: A very good Cavernario/Dragon Lee match which would be trumped by an even better Dragon Lee match a few days later. Still, these guys kept it together very well for their age and experience, putting together a much more solid and complete match than would’ve normally been expected of them. Dragon Lee throws himself all into his topes and his flips; hope he has a hard head. I have this as an actually just a second short of the time limit, but I’m starting my timing on the last whistle blow rather than the first, and they start the clock anyway. These two really cut it close; Cavernario probably should’ve just put the hold on one move sooner, but it worked out.

javelin like tope
Cachorro slingshot casadora armdrag

Cachorro vs Guerrero Negro Jr. in a En Busca de un Idolo match: This one couldn’t match the excitement of the previous match. Guerrero Negro Jr. is usually technically proficient but the matches are not put together in any particular way. That leaves a few spots here and there, but a match easy to not pay attention to for a while and not feel lost when you snap back to attention. Sombra’s got a point about Cachorro’s music. It can also be made about always using the Fujiwara armbar. He needs to have his own identity and not fall down the same holes as other juniors (Park, Wagner come to mind.) Cachorro’s armdrag was a good start.

triple dive

Fuego, Máximo, Sagrado vs Felino, Puma, Tiger: Rapid fire “the judges talked for too long” version of this trios. Not a fall broke four minutes, the match barely broke ten. I’ve got the least problem with three falls of anyone, but when a quarter of the match is the period in between falls, then maybe you don’t need to have falls. Puma’s finish needs a name if he’s going to use it on anyone besides Fuego.

Maybe it’s the ‘matafuego’ because it keeps extinguishing him?
relax with a double stomp

La Sombra, Titán, Tritón vs Boby Zavala, Dragón Rojo Jr., Rey Escorpión: If anyone was going to get in a feud around handshakes, I would’ve thought it would be Puma. This is a more tolerable match than the ones which would occur the following Sunday; Triton, Titan, Bobby Zavala and Dragon Rojo basically had one match, then Sombra and Escorpion would have their own for at least the first two falls. Sombra also did a better job here of integrating what he normally does with his new personality. It kind fell apart into Sombra turning on his partners many many times in the third. Triton and Zavala worked against each other, looked good, and should be used in these roles more often. Triton and Titan teaming up was a rare treat here, but there’s no reason it has to be that way.
