Averno & Cara to AAA confirmed?, Stuka wins Reyes del Aire, Wagner beats Park, ChilangaMask

Today’s MLW Radio show has some AAA talk in the very last minutes of the show. I’ve semi-transcribed it here, but the gist is Konnan says they’ve signed Sin Cara by name and implies Averno is coming with him. He says they’re coming in May, but does not specify when in May. They could be showing up next weekend, or it could be much later. Averno is not scheduled for any more CMLL DF matches at this time.

Stuka wins, Mephisto definitely does not/Terra

Sides were rudos versus tecnicos, Tritón (Tiger Destoryer), Ephesto (Maya blocking the Ephesto Roll), Guerrero Maya Jr. (Niebla Roja quebrada), Rey Cometa (Puma reinera), Tiger (Delta double stomp), Puma (Valiente Buster), Delta (Averno Devil’s Wings), Niebla Roja (Stuka bomb splash), Valiente (Averno & Mephisto powerbomb), Averno (Stuka Jr. casadora cradle), Mephisto (Stuka Jr. back suplex into a sit down piledriver). Stuka wins the Reyes del Aire for the first time.
5) Dragón Rojo Jr., Pólvora, Rey Escorpión b Atlantis, La Sombra, Mistico Atlantis, La Sombra, Mistico vs Dragon Rojo Jr., Polvora, Rey Escorpion, on DailyMotion (posted by thecubsfan)
Sombra did not get along with his partners in prematch interviews and during portions of the match, continuing his behavior from Friday. Escorpion offered Sombra a handshake early, then took the match (1/3) with a foul on Sombra. Rey Escorpion said he had to evil things to get Sombra to fully commit to being a rudo. Sombra told the crowd off in very Rush fashion and the rudos attacked him again. Tecnicos said nothing and did not make the save.

this entire post is an excuse to reuse this gif/Terra

CMLL picked continuing the Sombra “odioso” bit over playing to the crowd with a Kid’s Day main event. They could’ve even done both, just had Mistico win the La Mistica on Rey Escorpion everyone was expecting – they had the confetti for it – but went with a much different result. There were Kid themed trappings – little girls worked as edecanes and had a dance number, Reyes del Aire got a big entrance and fireworks, the Peste Negra match was a lot of comedy (and Mr. Niebla saying naughty things on the microphone), but the finishes weren’t as booked primarily to send people home happy as in other years. Stuka got the big win and the mini tencicos won the opener, but the good guys (when the good guys could be deciphered) lost more than they won.

I was watching the show on a small screen and never saw a lit shot of the whole arena, but it appeared to be a giant crowd. CMLL were definitely using camera shots they only show when they want to show up the size of the event.

MR (SUN) 04/27/2014 2300 Arena, South Philadelphia, Pennsylvania [Highspots.TV]
1) Latin Dragon & Ultimo Panda b Frightmare & Hallowicked
2) Amasis, Green Ant, Opihidan b Chuck Taylor, Orange Cassidy, Papadon
3) Solar I b Negro Navarro [FLLM MASTER]
Navarro won with a kimura in their usual mat battle. Negro and Solar collected money for a long while after the match.
4) Mini Mariachi b Pierrothito [PWR MINIS]
Pierrothito initially won on his inverted powerslam, but Mariachi may have kicked out before three. An unnmaed Masked Republic official restarted the match, which Pierrothito dominated for a couple minutes until Mariachi rolled him up to retain his title.
5) Christina Von Eerie b Sumie Sakai [PWR WOMEN]
Sakai’s second interfered freely, but Von Eerie retained.
6) Casandro b Matt Cross
Match did not air stream issues.
7) Bestia 666, Damián 666, Sabu b Blk Jeez, Homicide, Ruckus
Sabu put Homicide thru a table for the win.
8) Dr. Wagner Jr. b LA Park [IWL HEAVY]
Wagner’s IWL title was added to the match. He kept it when the referee was bumped, Park pulled Wagner’s mask but Wagner fouled Park at the same time and fell on top for the win.

The iPPV feed had some issues for the first half of the card, then started to nose dive during the minis title match. It was unwatchable during intermission, for the women’s title match and Casandro’s match before getting to normal by the semimain. Their Twitter sent out messages, and they put up a scroll on the screen eventually, but it was still a long hour or so while waiting for the problem to get fixed. Part 1 is now up on Highspots website, and Part 2 (where more of the show was lost) will be up Tuesday.

No other big news coming out of the show. One estimate had about 700 people in the building. Damian seemed to be hurt leaving the ring after his match (this report says it’s serious), but no other injuries was noticeable. I missed the entrances to the Solar/Navarro match, so I’m unsure who was meant to be champion this week, but that belt just bounces back and forth without explanation so a title change there isn’t a big deal. All the other titles stayed with their champions – though the minis match needed a restart to accomplish that. Maybe the biggest news was Wagner & Park did NOT challenge each other for a mask match. I can’t think of the last time that happened.

Dr. Wagner and LA Park kept it completely in the ring, outside of a couple dives, and this was more the touring singles match than out of control match they’ve done elsewhere. Crowd dug it, and got into the Solar/Navarro too. This was a crowd who knew of those two guys, and were surprised and delighted when they pulled out particularly creative holds. Fans was into the local indy guys. Most of the promos were done in Spanish (iPPV was in English), and there appeared to be a mix of traditional lucha libre fans and indy fans.

I was a lot less upset about these iPPV problems than last year’s TripleMania. I think part of it was we got to see half the show, and the two matches I wanted to see most, but the larger part of it was I could just look over at another screen and watch the CMLL show instead. I probably would be more bothered if I had nothing else to but to wait and search in vain for results. (This is not as much a plus for MaskedMania but the discovery of a coping mechanism. If TripleMania is on a Saturday, I probably should figure out a way to stream all the matches I promised to watch later so I have a distraction.)

Announcing was good; Leonardo Chikarson and Joe Dombrowski obviously did their research and knew the guys. They said it was their first time calling a lucha libre show, but it didn’t feel that way. Sean Waltman, X-Pac, joined the announcers for Wagner/Parka and Solar/Navarro matches. He was good for both, but best in Solar/Wagner – he both gave background on the guys and also explained what they were looking trying to accomplish with different holds. (There’s sometimes no explaining what Wagner and Park are trying to accomplish.)

It was a $10 show and it was worth the $10 – maybe more if Cross/Casandro was good. My Highspots account notes the last iPPV I bought from them was the WWL show in Puerto Rico (about a year ago to this week!), and this was definitely much better than that.

Masked Republic’s Twitter account teased the possibility of future shows, though there was nothing on the show which directly built to another one.  Every tecnico won, which I didn’t even appreciate until I put together these results. They did the Kid’s Day finishes CMLL forgot!

Black Terry Jr. is putting photos up of the ChilangaMask show as I write this. I’ll do full results tomorrow, but the big results saw Satanico defeated El Dandy in his (DF) retirement match via faked foul. Truly there is nothing more rudo than to cheat a man in his retirement match. It appears ChilangaMask had a foreign tag team go missing for the second straight show – after no Young Bucks last time, Jake & Dave Crist were replaced by Freelance and Oro Jr. in three way tag. I really want to see that match even more with those two guys in it, and it sounds like one of the best matches on the show, but the foreign acts being adveritsed and not making it is a disappointing trend. (Zeuxis was also replaced by Princesa Sugehit, but she is probably still sidelined by injury – and maybe was at the show anyway?) Aero Boy versus Black Terry was also said to be a very good match.

It was said to be a good show overall. Other results reveal Herodes survived and Magnus did not win his match. I have trouble believing either of these things!

new champion Demonio Maya/@acogdl

CMLL (SUN) 04/27/2014 Arena Coliseo Guadalajara [@acogdl]
1) Meteoro b Relampago Azul
2) Mr. Trueno & Rey Trueno b El Divino & Virgo
Rudos took 2/3.
3) León Blanco, Sky Kid, Smaker b El Yaqui, Espectrum, Magnum
Tecnicos took 2/3.
4) Mugroso Vago L ExterminadorJavier Cruz Jr.Évola [hair]
Cruz Jr. escaped first, then Evola, and Exterminador defeated new luchador Mugroso Vago for the win.
5) Demonio Maya b Fuego [OCCIDENTE MIDDLE]
Demonio took falls 1/3 to win the championship in a good match. Fuego falls on first defense.
6) Black Panther, Blue Panther, Cachorro b Euforia, Misterioso Jr., Vangellys
Panthers took 1/3.

Good day to be in Cavernario/Maya family – one brother wins in Arena Mexico, another beats a guy from Arena Mexico to win a championship. It makes more sense for the locals to have the local titles, but Demonio Maya got a big win for a new guy.

And getting wins for a new guy is tough in Guadalajara. Mugroso Vago is here a month and lost his hair.

A show for Tuesday in Tamaulipas has LA Park (& son) versus Dr. Wagner (& son) on top of a CMLL-ish card. Semimain is Blue Panther and Brazo de Plata versus Olimpico and Averno. That man is everywhere.

This week’s Super Libre had an interview with Sadica and some very good predictions.

Eric R has a recap of 04/12/14 CMLL Azteca.

Hijo de Fishman won a mask.

1) Molotov & Sensei vs Ramstein & Zayco
2) Black Panther, Hombre Bala Jr., Súper Halcón Jr. vs Cancerbero, Herodes Jr., Raziel
3) Sagrado, Stuka Jr., Tritón vs Ephesto, Sangre Azteca, Virus
4) Fuego vs Puma [lightning]
5) La Máscara, Titán, Valiente vs Euforia, Gran Guerrero, Niebla Roja
6) La Sombra, Marco Corleone, Mistico vs Dragón Rojo Jr., Pólvora, Rey Escorpión

Lo Odiosos (TM Super Libre) are split up – Mascara is with Titan and Vailente, Sombra is with Marco and Mistico – and I hope that doesn’t meant two straight matches of partners not getting along. Maybe the story will turn out to be Rey Escorpion and friends beating up Sombra so many times that he rethinks this whole bad attitude thing.

Fuego & Puma should be fun, and Halcon should do better in his natural habit.

There are weeks where it seems like Guadalajara has the more attractive matches. This is not one of those weeks. Family dinners must be rough on poor Indigo – his rudo brothers brag about winning titles and being in big tournaments, and he’s a tecnico in the segunda!

10 thoughts to “Averno & Cara to AAA confirmed?, Stuka wins Reyes del Aire, Wagner beats Park, ChilangaMask”

  1. was at the masked mania show negro was champ and retained. cassandro does not know the words “mail it in” still doing her spear the ring post at 100 mph spot. like he needs to prove himself every night

id say best was the maestro’s match
    weakest was the minis

  2. I thought Masked Mania was a good show, but I didn’t like the way MR and Highspots handled it when the feed was getting bad. Highspots didn’t even acknowledge any problems until the feed completely died in the 2nd half. And someone at MR used the related ‘Manny Peeples’ twitter account to insult people complaining about the quality of the feed.

Otherwise, it was an enjoyable show. Once the full thing goes up on Highspots I will be re-watching the whole thing to better capture things, as the problems with the streaming did hamper things for me

  3. yeah it is a shame how few companies get ippv feeds right.

one thing is their tortila budget has to be astronomical. when the japanese girl faceing an american is throwing tortilas to get foriegn heel heat you ae officially over doing it

  4. @LOGMAN: Manny Peeples is another guy and not Kevin or Ruben of Masked Republic.

I had tons of issues early on with the stream. Since CMLL was on and I had to recap it, decided I’d wait until they put it up on VOD.

  5. Ah ok, for some reason I thought it was someone from Masked Republic. Even if it was, it could have been friendly banter with someone they know – I don’t know these things so shouldn’t make judgments.

Hopefully they get another chance to do it right

  6. Naive question, but is there any way of getting just the Solar/Navarro match, without buying the entire event?

  7. Solo mencionar que ayer fue última lucha de Averno en Arena México con CMLL. SE VA….

  8. Really enjoyed the kids day show, though I thought Porky’s dancing with the mini edecanes was quite uncomfortable!

Would have been cool to see Averno do a little more in his last appearance, I wonder if that is why all the Averno’s were in that match?

  9. Looks like they skipped 2 weeks of Puebla like you predicted!
Does that mean cmll won’t air those at all now? Shame as Volador/Casas and a cibernetico will be skipped.
