CMLL (SUN) 02/16/2014 Arena Mexico [CMLL, LuchaWorldYahoo! Deportes]
1) Astral, Eléctrico, Último Dragoncito b Demus 3:16, Mercurio, Pierrothito
Tecnicos took 2/3.
2) Hijo del Signo, Hooligan, Nitro b Hombre Bala Jr., Metatrón, Súper Halcón Jr.
Rudos took 1/3.
3) Rey Cometa, Sagrado, Stuka Jr. b Kamaitachi, Puma, Virus
Rey Cometa appeared to hurt his knee early but still finished the match. Tecnicos took 2/3.
4) Diamante Azul, Fuego, La Máscara b Ephesto, Pierroth, Vangellys
Fuego replaced Thunder (who may have been hurt in Puebla in Monday.) Tecnicos took 2/3.
5) Mistico b Pólvora [CMLL WELTER]
Seconds were Inquisidor & Dragon Lee. Mistico took falls from 2/3 in a better match than last week’s preview foreshadowed. Mistico won with La Mistica, which went much better than last week. Mistico is the 28th champion. Polvora falls on his seventh known defense.
6) Marco Corleone, Super Porky, Volador Jr. b Dragón Rojo Jr., Kráneo, Mr. Águila
Tecnicos took 2/3. Marco hit the ropes on his Aero Italia dive and fell hard in the win, but the other tecnicos beat the other rudos quickly anyway. Marco seemed hurt at first but was OK in past match interviews.

That’s the new Mistico’s first championship. Somewhat of a surprise that Mistico won, which speaks to the inconsistent way he’s been used. The major differences are this is a welterweight title instead of a light heavyweight title (which slightly matters), and that was before the old Mistico turned back up in Mexico and this is after. This was a trios title feud until the week after the Sin Cara Gym show, and it seems to be as much a motivating factor as anything.

It’s not a big loss for Polvora, who had not defended this title in Mexico City in a year. CMLL went out of their way to give all three Revolucionarios championships and never really did much with that idea. He’s going to be in the same spot as long as that group keeps together, 0ne of the handful of rudo trios who are cycled to the top for title shots.

Mistico II is now a double champion and Averno’s probably in line for a lot of title matches. La Mascara, Rush and Titan are also double champions, giving CMLL 14 champions. They’ll get back to 16 by September.

1) Relampago Azul b Meteoro
2) Javier Cruz & William Rock b El Yaqui & Évola
Tecnicos took 2/3.
3) Espectrum, Infierno, Ráfaga b Halcón de Plata, Leo, Sky Kid
Rudos took 2/3.
4) El Cavernario b Smaker
5) Blue Panther & Solar I b Negro Casas & Negro Navarro
Tecnicos took 1/3, money thrown in.
6) Mephisto b Titán
Mephisto took falls 1/3, sneaking in a foul to win.

Mephisto, scourage of young high flying tecnicos. (I don’t see the point in putting Titan in positions to lose, but I like too much consistency.)

The latest drunk Mr. Aguila match aired tonight on TVC Deportes. It was the match he had in Puebla two Mondays ago. I had problems seeing all of the third fall due to feed problems, but I saw enough to see some business exposing lucha libre. Everyone in the match knew he was in no condition the moment he went out there, because they did a slow brawling match where Aguila didn’t have to do much, but the little he did not go well. The finish was atrocious, partly because Volador Jr. made sure Aguila looked like a total fool and pointed it out to the crowd. I do not blame him there. Aguila had a post match promo that was in another world. I can’t believe CMLL let Aguila go out there, or deemed this fit to air. It doesn’t appear Aguila has lost any bookings from this, and there doesn’t seem to be any reason he should be concerned about that. He could’ve really hurt himself on a superplex spot in the third fall, and it kind feels like we’re waiting for something like to happen before CMLL does anything.

I’m mentioning Aguila by name, but he’s not the only guy to have this problem and lucha libre promoters generally have just turned a blind eye to it. People who cover lucha libre too.

Dr. Lucha and Bryan have had a recent talking point about how risky it is to put Shocker in the Dos Leyendas main event given his similar issues. That is a real concern, but CMLL’s behavior indicates they’re not concerned about those kind of issues. And, if this is the three way match they seem to be teasing, the match outcome is the same with or without Shocker, so they’re not exposed to as much risk; the match is stronger without Negro Casas in it, as weird as that sounds, so the only reason he’s in it is to take the loss.

Super Nova reports Super Nova won the IWRG Rebelion de Juniors. He beat Trauma I, will get a shot at Trauma II for the IWRG Juniors championship.
