New CMLL Tag Team Champs in strange main event, same women’s champ

CMLL (FRI) 10/18/2013 Arena Mexico [CMLL]
1) Fuego, Titán, Tritón b Misterioso Jr., Puma, Sangre Azteca
Titan replaced Diamante. Tecnicos took 2/3 in a disappointing match.
2) Ephesto, Tiger, Vangellys b Ángel de Oro, Máximo, Stuka Jr.
Ephesto replaced Terrible. Rudos took 2/3 in an OK match.
3) Marcela b Dallys la Caribeña [CMLL WOMEN]
Marcela is champion. Ninth defense. First fall ended poorly, with Dallys pinning Marcela for three, then ignoring to put on a scorpion for the submission. Marcela took the second and the third with the top rope stomp and Michinoku Driver to keep the title.
4) Gran Guerrero, Niebla Roja, Último Guerrero b Máscara Dorada, Mistico, Valiente
Niebla Roja wrestled the first fall in a shirt honoring his late uncle. Rudos took the first with a triple submission. Guerreros take 1/3, UG beating Mistico clean with the Guerrero Special.
5) Rey Escorpión DQ Super Porky [hair, super libre plus]
Escorpion took falls 1/3 (there were falls!), the last when Maximo could no longer stand the beating his father was taking and attacked Escorpion. Zavala seconded Escorpion. CMLL honored El Brazo after the match.
6) Tama Tonga & Terrible b La Máscara & Rush
Tama Tonga & Rey Bucanero were champions making their first defense, but Bucanero is hurt. La Mascara & Rush won the tag team titles by forfeit, and Terrible replaced Bucanero for a non-title match. Terrible and Tonga won, setting up the tag team title match again.

There’s precedent to CMLL’s handling of the tag team titles. Ultimo Guerrero & Rey Bucanero’s first title reign (2000-08-04) started the same way, when Emilio Charles was unable to wrestle in a vacant title tournament final. Guerrero & Bucanero were awarded the title, a non-title tag match was held, and the title match was rescheduled for a couple weeks later. There’s also precedent for CMLL handling it the opposite way. Back on 2003-06-20, Los Infernals and champions Familia de Tijuana were to have a national trios title match, only Nicho didn’t show. That was the end of Nicho in CMLL (he’s never been back), but the Infernales were not given the titles – they refused them and they were later put on the line in a tournament.

The bottom line is CMLL did not have to handle the situation as they did last night. They gave the titles to Rush & La Mascara, but they could’ve held them up or done anything they would’ve liked. CMLL advertised a tag team title match and did not deliver a tag team title match. It would’ve been fair play to do the same exact tag title match they’re going to end up doing in two weeks. It also would’ve been fair play to announce Rey Bucanero was out injured and the tag team title match would not be happening; it’s not as though Bucanero tripped over something and hurt his knee an hour before the match. CMLL knew enough in advance to shuffle the card but never stopped advertising the main event. THAT’s fraud.

(Weird enough, it’s portrayed that way in storyline – but they’re blaming it on TRT pulling a trick and not letting anyone know what’s up. Which requires the commission and promotion to be dumb enough not to check on Bucanero & Tonga before the match but somehow go along with Ephesto replacing Terrible.)

If I was in Mexico, I think I would’ve wanted to go this show over the AAA one. Mostly because the Super Libre Plus match was built up well, and maybe it turned out well, but I think I would’ve also ended up regretting my choice by the end of the night.

Recaps of the Super Libre Plus match seem to blame Maximo for costing his father the match, as if maybe Porky still had a chance to make one more comeback if his son had stayed out of it. (And no one seemed to like that finish.) The rules of the match were win by knockout, submission or disqualification – but there was no mention of the ref being able to stop the match. It could’ve been a situation where Porky was just getting destroyed but wouldn’t quit and the ref couldn’t stop it, but it’s not totally clear.

Rey Cometa replaces Hijo del Fantasma in the lightning match on Tuesday, and Stukita replaces Bam Bam in the minis match.

WWE’s show in Mexico City looks like it drew very well. They’re doing the same set up to a Misterio/Sin Cara vs Barrett/Del Rio tag match on each show. Hunico is back, working the undercard.

R de Rudo will have streaming video of a show with a CMLL main event at 7pm today.

Rob has highlights of 08/20/13 CMLL.

Sounds like Dos Caras’ retirement match will be a 12/04 NOSAWA show, teaming with Mil Mascaras vs Nosawa & Masada.

Eric R @ Segunda Caida really liked the Pequeno Halloween vs Octagoncito match from 09/29 Uprising

DJ Spectro looks back at Kung Fu‘s career and Black Gordman losing his mask (which is a different month than we have on the wiki)

  1. Oh okay. Super Porky has so many kids wrestling you never know when a new one will show up or reveal themselves as a Brazo.
