Mistico and WWE: the neverending story

I remember liking that movie, but it’s long a time since I’ve seen it. Oh, right, news:

This will probably change several times over the next six days because of the gigantic political implications of this decision, but Mistico, against the wishes of CMLL, is scheduled to appear on Tuesday night in San Jose at the WWE tapings. (thanks to Steve “Dr. Lucha” Sims)

Okay, so now I’m not going to write anymore unless I have something new to say about this. Luckily, I do!

I’m thinking he won’t end up in WWE. But, if he was,

I THINK
– CMLL would want Mistico to work out as many dates as possible (they really don’t have equal replacements on the roster)
– CMLL would still want to do a big main event on 03/24, since they’re still competing with WWE (though WWE may have to put a stronger fight to be considered competing)
– CMLL would want to keep the rights to the Mistico and name and gimmick, since they’re already fought for them once

Why not still do the Perro Aguayo Jr. vs Mistico match, except have Mistico lose his mask? He’s gone, CMLL doesn’t care – it’d be a spite move, and one that could cost money (since it’d be worth more if his WWE stint was halfway decent, but promotions have done the same) – and there’s no sense in having Perro lose his hair to a guy on the way out. Either they’d have to come up with another match (Marco/Universo? Volador in Mistico’s spot to beat Perro’s hair – would Perro be okay with that?) or Mistico loses his mask.

This isn’t happening, but it’s weird to figure a halfway reasonable imagine a scenario where Mistico loses his mask. That seemed impossible.

  1. The problem is that Perro Jr is rumored to be jumping as well so why make Mistico lose his mask to him? I think Meltzy is wrong at thinking Perrillo is a phenom wrestle and drawing wise in Mexico, but if WWE thinks Meltzer is right, they might want to pull them both…

  2. I would kind of think that if Mistico decides to leave CMLL they would at least force him to drop the mask in a match, maybe even have a screwjob finish ala Bret Hart.I had heard that he was scheduled to have a mask match vs Averno or Mephisto real soon. Why not do it there?

If I were Paco Alonso Lutteroth I would be really pissed at Mistico since all that time and money that went into building the guy up was a total waste.

  3. He hasn’t jumped yet, chill out. The Mexican mafia connections CMLL has can do wonderful things.;)

But really… I’m not saying the jump will or won’t happen, just that the reprecussions if it did happen would run way deeper than anyone can imagine. Mistico basically controls the fate of every upcoming young wrestler in Mexico.

  4. Never saw it, remember a behind the scenes special about Jim Henson (?) doing the giant dragon dog or whatever and never took any interest, never been a fantasy (or that kind of fantasy) fan, fell sleept during LOTR and never actually saw the third chapter of that…

I don’t really understand that point to be honest. There appeared to be very little in the way of time and money invested in him originally – he appeared one week with Fray Tormentia under a new gimmick, the crowd took to him, and 4 months down the line he was main eventing and making CMLL a lot of money – and has been doing just that for the last 2 and a bit years. I’d be quite confident in saying that he was earned CMLL far, far money than it has cost them to build him up.

Mistico would be screwing no-one if he left. And i wouldn’t mind it if he did go because he’s getting really stale lately and is nowhere near as exciting to watch in the CMLL environment as he used to be.

Of course, it could be argued that this is due to how spoilt we are with Tv nowadays as we often have 3 fixes of Mistico per week. But still, he has become a bit boring and a year or so away could really be for the better (from my point of view – ie watching on TV). And when he returned he would feel as fresh as ever.

If he did go, you can be sure it would not be permanent. He’d be back in CMLL eventually, probably sooner rather than later, and there’s always Volador jr to take his spot in the meantime.:)

It also wouldn’t be that difficult to go down the same route as they did with Mistico and repackage one of the current undercarders as a top flier and put them into the uppercard mix – because there are plenty who are spectacular and look to be capable of hitting their spots – Flash, Super Nova – even Valiente for example.

Or preferably, they could do the decent thing, realise their previous mistake and try to lure the best highflying luchador today back from Japan and make him the new ace of the promotion. With the support of the company, he would let no-one down! :)

  6. I think you’re way off with those comments Henrik…

You can’t just choose to re-package guys and tell the crowd to like them. CMLL wouldn’t have been suffering for years if it was as simple as that.

  7. Oh i’m not talking from a business sense. I don’t know shit about how Mexican fans’ minds work (those people confuse me) :)and wouldn’t even try to comment on them. If Mistico did leave, i don’t doubt for one minute that business would take a nosedive. That said, i do have a suspicion that if you forcefeed the mexican fans something and you really want to make somebody popular and successful, they will be almost regardless of talent – see La Mascara as a semi-main event ‘star’ for example. But that’s beside the point.

Like i said, i’m just commenting on my perspective as someone who watches it on TV. That i’m becoming bored of Mistico, that he could leave, they could build up some other good young flier into the uppercard mix, and i could still enjoy CMLL just as much as i do today. :)

Mistico nowadays would have far more impact on me if he was returning after a hiatus, because you’re pretty much just seeing the same sequence after sequence when you watch him on a weekly basis.

On a larger scale, it’s actually something that’s quite depressing throughout CMLL just now, compared to 90s and early 00s lucha everything just seems so repetitive. The sooner they allow luchadors more freedom and don’t frown on extended matwork, the better imo.

    Aren’t you a Sagrado fan?

    Sorry…

    *THE* Sagrado fan?;)

  9. Hey, Sagrado 2006+ rocks! don’t knock him. :-p

Besides, they haven’t went overboard with him after the initial push where the only way he would’ve got over would be in a JT Smith kinda way. Bet you if they tried to elevate him to main event status today the fans would take to him warmly – if they could only manage to forget how awful he was when he had just got the gimmick in 2003 ;)

  10. CMLL finally gets the fans excited about Valiente so of course they have to ruin it by showing an unaired Reyes Del Aire spot that he blew. What a dumb promotion.

Damn Tony Rivera’s botched dive looked PAINFUL.

It’s much more than that… Part of the huge draws was that Coliseo would charge 1 peso (less than a dime) per kid and Arena Mexico 10 pesos (Not quite a buck) so that the place would be packed with kids, so that 10 years from now, when they have their own income, they would go to watch him and spend big bucks in the big stip matches and merchandising, but if he goes, kids will get to follow someone else and evereything will be lost…

Besides, the full roster got de-valorized since everyone became second rate compared to Mistico…
