recap

A lot of wrestling! Most of it good!

last Dr. Karonte son left standing wins

This crowd was something else. They were way into the show, using the thunderstrix noisemaker more noticeably than any show since they’ve started they given them out. They were also amazingly into the rudos up and down the show, with Tito and Cota and Dark Dragon and even poor Super Fly getting chants. It was really encouraging for those guys, but actually a bit concerning for me – when you have that many people cheering the rudos, that often means you’re just down the hardcore smart fans who are into lucha libre but not the product and are rebelling on some level. (See: CMLL for the last couple of years.) There wasn’t the casual fans cheering for the tecnicos – outside of Wagner, who is god to this group of fans.

There’s no sense in reading a lot into this, because it’s just one show in a relatively small venue with the really strongly pushed tecnicos not in matches, and it’s more likely to be a relatively small group of organized fans pulling in the rest of the crowd in lucha libre than everyone knowing who Tito Santana is. I’d much rather have people excited for the show than not, and this was the most excited crowd since the last time they were in Naucalpan, but it was just very weird.

Casandro

Argenis, Daga, Relampago vs Decnnis, Tigre Cota, Tito Santana: Fun match. Would’ve been a really great one with anyone besides Relampago, but Daga/Rocco impressed in his debut to a near-Fenix level and Argenis has improved an incredible amount. Rudos are always good, but were extra motivated with the crowd being way into them. This was another bad Relampago performance in a series of them; if AAA can grab guys like Daga, then I’m not sure how much longer they’ll be messing around with him. Three hour TV show is coming at the right time, it would’ve been a shame if this one got skipped.

Casandro, El Brazo, Pimpinela Escarlata vs Nygma, Pasion Kristal, Yuriko: Casandro is still really good. Really so good that there’s absolutely no reason Casandro should ever be climbing to a very high place to dive off – if you can do so much else that’s good, why do something that was so risky and no one will remember it next week? Seemed like another person just overly excited for the crowd and the match. He was on otherwise.

Sugi!

Dr. Wagner Jr. & Electroshock vs Chessman & Octagón: a match where they seemed to have a plan to start with, someone forgot the plan, and they meandered along for an overly long time until a finish that barely made any sense. This is one match that could’ve used the harsh editing.

Fenix

Aerostar, Fenix, Sugi San vs Dark Dragon, La Parka, Súper Fly: Very fun match. Parka was much more convincing as a rudo this week. He’s a much more believable threat than Octagon and might actually work out well in this role. The other five guys were about as good as they usually are; Sugi looked fine for disappearing into a black hole for the last six months, Fenix and Dark Dragon did their things, Aerostar and Super Fly started slow but picked it up.
