CMLL holds off Invasors, but loses badly to NJPW

CMLL (FRI) 01/21/2011 Arena Mexico [MTSuperLuchasFuego en el RingCMLLCesar]
1) Leono & MolotovDisturbio & Zayco
2) Ángel Azteca Jr., Dragon Lee, Rey CometaHijo del Signo, Loco Max, Skándalo
3) Delta, Diamante, MetroCancerbero, Raziel, Virus
4) Pólvora DQ Sangre Azteca [lightning]
Polvora fouled Sangre with a Fuerza knee lift, but didn’t pull it off well.
5) Blue Panther, Rush, ValienteMephisto, Terrible, Texano
Rush and Texano fought here, even after the bell, teasing a feud
6) Rey Bucanero, Último Guerrero, Volador Jr. DQ Héctor Garza, Olímpico, Psicosis
Volador fouled Psicosis and was getting away with it for the pin. Olimpico had also pulled Ultimo Guerrero’s mask, and did the world’s worst job of hiding it. He accidentally tossed the mask in front of the ref, who called the DQ

Not a show of progress.

NJPW CMLL (SAT) 01/22/2011 Korakuen Hall [SuperLuchasStrong Style SpiritMask Mania]
***Fantastica Mania, 2011***
Attendance: 1800
1) Taichi b Máximo
Taichi got his win back.
2) Ryusuke Taguchi b Máscara Dorada [CMLL WELTER]
Title change! Taguchi is the Dorada’s injury may have caught up with him here; match went 11 minutes, which is a bit short. Dorada has lost two of his titles in a short time and puts a third on the line tomorrow.
3) Jushin Liger b La Sombra [CMLL MIDDLE]
Clean win title defense for brainbuster. This is probably not the end for these two quite yet.
4) Atlantis & Shigeo Okumura b Gigante Bernard & Karl Anderson [IWGP TAG]
Okumura lost to Anderson’s Stun Gun. Atlantis reported to be alive and well
5) Dragón Rojo Jr. & Tomohiro Ishii b La Máscara & Tiger Mask IV
no idea why this was the semimain. Dragon pinned La Mascara. Mascara had a bad night, so much that the crowd was laughing at him and Taichi took to Twitter to defend him.
6) Averno, Shinsuke Nakamura, Tetsuya Naito b Hiroshi Tanahashi, Místico, Prince Devitt
Surprise Averno pinfall on Mistico here to set up tomorrow’s singles match. (Odd they didn’t do that with Tiger Mask.)

CMLL losing all three title matches is a hard way to make people interested in CMLL luchadors. They’ve got to be holding onto the trios titles tomorrow. A sell out, with another one expected tomorrow. Cesar points out the title change means Taguchi and probably Devitt are headed to Mexico sometime this year.

Before the show, the CMLL guys were on a hour long wrestling talk TV show hyping the event.

Sunday’s show is noon local time, 9pm Mexico City time. Probably should have results before the end of ACM.

Ras de Lona had interviews with Magnus & Super Halcon Jr., so at some point they might actually debut. Lots of hype for the NJPW shows; they all did interviews from the Mexico City airport on their way out, except Sombra didn’t have his mask, so he talked while wearing Mistico’s Spiderman mask. Averno didn’t have his mask either, but just did his promo facing away from the camera. In Mexico based stuff, there was a lot of discussion of the brass knuckles bit from last Friday.

They’ll be announcing the second legend in Dos Leyendas next week. Enrique Niesta says it’s Angel Blanco.

  • CrackSports catches up with legendary luchador Dory Dixon. He’s a fan of water.
  • Ohtani’s Jacket catches up with Negro Navarro.
  • Puma King wants to join his father as champion in Guadalajara.
  • Damian says his team’s win over the Psycho Circus was not cheating, because they decide the rules

Lineup

CMLL (TUE) 01/25/2011 Arena Coliseo Guadalajara
1) Nube Roja vs In Memoriam
2) Astro Boy & Magnum vs Ángel del Mal & Semental
3) Dark Angel, Goya Kong, Silueta vs La Seductora, Princesa Sujei, Zeuxis
4) Mr. Trueno vs Puma King [OCCIDENTE MIDDLE]
5) Hijo del Fantasma, La Máscara, Máximo vs Terrible, Texano, Volador Jr.

Title match makes (Teleformula) TV! If there was a second men’s trios (or pairs) match on the card, it probably wouldn’t. Mr. Trueno’s held that title since 12/30/2008, with 2 known defenses. Puma is the slight favorite.

CMLL (FRI) 01/28/2011 Arena Mexico
1) Cholo & Mortiz vs Tigre Blanco & Trueno
2) Goya Kong, Lluvia, Luna Mágica vs Estrellita, La Comandante, Tiffany
3) Eléctrico vs Astral [lightning]
4) Ángel de Oro, Sagrado, Stuka Jr. vs Misterioso II, Pólvora, Sangre Azteca
5) Máximo, Rush, Toscano vs Terrible, Texano, Volador Jr.
6) Averno, Mephisto, Negro Casas vs Hijo del Fantasma, La Sombra, Máscara Dorada

Ras de Lona had the top two matches as
La Mascara, Toscano, Rush vs Volador, Terrible, Texano
Mistico, La Sombra, Blue Panther vs Averno, Mephisto, Negro Casas

This is better, because Mephisto/Fantasma gets to continue. Rush/Texano does not seem like a one week issue too. Doubtful Dorada will be making this show, because he hasn’t made any in Mexico. Fourth match is a great waste of everyone’s time, but maybe there will finally be a resolution. Minis lightning match is probably just getting two tecnicos in there after they had two rudos this week.

  1. CMLL TV is still 2 weeks behind. They’re airing the 1/8 top 3 today. Not sure if this is permanent but if it is they just lost one of the edges they had on AAA – the fact their TV was actually current and not from 2/3 weeks ago.

  2. I’m 1h20m behind, but what were they blurring out on the Antonio Pena plaque at the start of the show today? That whole bit was weird, somehow lasting three minutes and having multiple edits.

  3. Lucha LIbre USA figures are actually at Walmart- well, some of them. The one I work closest to didn’t have them, but the one that’s in a more multicultural area(a whole five miles away) had them. They had ONE Charly, one Sydistiko, two Lizmarks, and a bunch of Corleones.

They also had a ring and mask and figure packs of Super Nova and Tienieblas Jr. they only had one Tienieblas left.

The Toys R Us next door didn’t carry them.

  4. LATV has a new episode, with matches from 01/07

    1) Tigre Blanco & Trueno b Cholo & Zayco
    2) Ángel Azteca Jr., Leono, Rey Cometa b Durango Kid, Escorpion, Puma King

  5. I know I’m the only one watching this, because there are no comments about Trueno’s “moonsault” to end the first fall. Poor, poor Trueno.

  6. @thecubsfan: Saw that spot on radiocmll originally. Trueno is one of those guys that looks great when he’s on but when he’s off… oh boy. I guess it runs in the family.

Camaleon/Frisbee vs Apocalipsis/Cholo on C3. Yes. Two Cholo matches in one day.

  7. @Nikita: That would be an insanely awesome gimmick. A camaleon who always ends up dressing like his partners. Shocked no scummy Japan indy hasn’t done this already.

  8. @Rob: Or… would it be more awesome if his outfit looked like a giant Cornoa logo, and after he took a backdrop or something, he just laid there and blended in with the canvas… and everyone acted like the couldnt see him. Then the opponent would turn away, and ol’ Camaleon would roll em’ up from behind!

This could totally be the lucha equivalent of the “humpbacks” gimmick!

  9. I loved the main event from Mega 6 yesterday. It was hilarious how Hector Garza laughed at Porky for having flabby titties, and then Porky looked into Garza’s tights and laughed at his dick. HA HA HA HA HA

I tell ya, CMLL has it all. Top 4 wrestlers in Mexico:

    1. Latin Lover
    2. Hector Garza
    3. Brazo de Plata
    4. Mistico

  10. @Nikita: or he could wear different outfits to blend into different parts of the environment like the stage and ramp and chairs

WHY DOES THIS GIMMICK NOT EXIST YET?
