quick sunday notes

Not sure when or if I’ll be around tonight, so consider this news post. Terra and Puebla are set up to record, but who ever knows with those. (I did capture most of C3 from last night – the sound is still off a little – so it’s a good start for recording feeds.)

Arena Coliseo does not have a particularly strong card. They appeared to be starting a Diamante Azul/Euforia title program last week, and they’re back matched up against each other this evening. Best match might end up being the minis match, depending on if Bam Bam shows up and who replaces him. Guadalajara has Dragon Rojo, Mascara Dorada, and Titan versus Ultimo Guerrero, Gran Guerrero and Niebla Roja. It’s a rare Ultimo Guerrero trios match without Atlantis. Niebla Roja returned a week early from his neck injury Friday night. IWRG has the eight man ladder match for a cash prize. It’s hard to believe there’s really that much cash being put on the line when you can see how much they’ve spent on the ladders. There are the usual many other shows run on Sunday; you can find today’s list here. (Or, if you’re really bored and want to see a big download, every event I have on this date ever is here.)

This week’s AAA TV dropped the mention of any taping on 09/17 and added 10/10 in Tlahuelilpan, Hildago. AAA still needs two weeks of TV in there unless something strange is happening. I’d assume the date or location is just changing and we’ll know more next week – that show and the Cancun lineups should be released around this time next week.

Black Terry Jr. has photos of the XMW show in Neza last night. That was the one with the bring your own weapons main event and looks suitable violent.

Gimnasio Juan de la Barrera was 90% full for the AAA show last night. I’m not really sure if that’s a good or bad number for a show where tickets were free with an ice cream purchase.

Ultimo Guerrero Universal champion again, Cometa/Cavernario?, CMLL wins in REINA

CMLL (FRI) 08/29/2014 Arena México [CMLLYahoo! Deportes
1) Disturbio & Guerrero Negro Jr. b Soberano Jr. & Star Jr.
2) Kamaitachi, Okumura, Puma b Cachorro, Dragon Lee, Pegasso
Kamaitachi beat Dragon Lee with consecutive German suplexes
3) Ángel de Oro, Blue Panther, Fuego b Hombre Sin Nombre, Pierroth, Sagrado
Pierrothito came to the ring with Pierroth (normal) but stuck around and interfered in the match (abnormal). Tecnicos still won, with Sagrado and Angel de Oro still feuding.
4) Máscara Dorada, Rey Cometa, Valiente DQ Cavernario, Felino, Mr. Niebla
Cavernario fouled Rey Cometa. Mascara Dorada was stretechered out after a tope on Mr. niebla.
5) Negro Casas, Niebla Roja, Rey Escorpión DQ Atlantis, Dragón Rojo Jr., Rush
Rush tried to attack Negro Casas, but Casas moved and Rush ended up fouling Babe Richard instead. It was by accident, it was still a DQ, and it caused Rush to attack the ref after the fact.
6) Último Guerrero b La Sombra [CMLL Universal, final]
Seconds were Rush & Hombre sin Nombre. Sombra took fall 1, Guerrero the second with Pulpo Guerrero, the third with Guerrero Special. He’s the first two time champion. UG declared the same thing would happen on the 19th to Atlantis.

What’s not been clear the last few weeks: Rey Cometa and Cavernario are feuding! They’ve been matched up on trios for the last month (except last week), including fighting after the match a couple weeks ago. They’re matched up in a lightning match next week, while CMLL is short at least one apuesta match for the Anniversary show. Could Cavernario and Cometa, hair vs hair, be happening on 09/19?

It’s not going to help sell tickets much if the feud is not advertised (isn’t that the entire point of CMLL Informa?), but it would be a quite a match and one where I’m not totally sure who would win.

Ultimo Guerrero bringing Hombre sin Nombre out as his second signals to me that they’re not even trying to keep his identity secret from the fans who pay close attention. Hope that means he can return to wrestling normally now.

Mistico was part of the announce crew last night.

AAA’s TV show will have the cage match and Psycho vs Texano today – and it’s already up on YouTube. That leaves the opener and the Copa TripleMania for next week. They’ve also separated out the videos which opened the show, the one for the Reinas de Reinas match, the intros for Psycho Clown and Texano Jr. and the cage match video. It got lost in everything else but the feud & entrance videos for this show were about ten times better than AAA has ever done, and better than WWE quality in a lot of cases. That was an amazing quantum leap, even if I don’t know why poor Saruman got beat up. I’m sure they’ll be back to a normal ad playing on a video board behind a wrestler when they get to Pachuca, but as far as a spectacular event, I bet that TripleMania is what Antonio Pena really dreamed of it being.

Chessman declares he’s on a five show winning streak, even though he hasn’t actually won almost all of those matches.

Rambo & Shu el Guerrero won the Trofeo Villano III via fouls in Arena Neza – then brawled with the actual Villano III. That was not the official prize.

Today’s the free AAA show (with ice cream purchase) in Gimnasio Juan de la Barrera.

Atlantis & Ultimo Guerrero will be live on Terra…for an interview, Wednesday afternoon.

Lucha Libre in Japan

08/30 REINA:

7) Silueta b Maki Narumiya (c) [REINA INTL JR] – title change! Silueta is the 6th champion, champion for the 3rd time.
8) Marcela (c) b Syuri [CMLL WOMEN] – middle rope Michinoku Driver? 11th known defense

Two for two for the CMLL luchadoras! They’re both headed back home now.

Lineup

CMLL (FRI) 09/05/2014 Arena México
1) Hombre Bala Jr., Pegasso, Súper Halcón Jr. vs Artillero, Canelo Casas, Súper Comando
2) Dark Angel, Estrellita, Goya Kong vs La Comandante, Tiffany, Zeuxis
3) Fuego, Stuka Jr., Super Porky vs Rey Bucanero, Terrible, Vangellys
4) Rey Cometa vs Cavernario [lightning
5) Atlantis, Dragón Rojo Jr., Volador Jr. vs Gran Guerrero, Rey Escorpión, Último Guerrero
6) Felino, Mr. Niebla, Negro Casas vs La Máscara, La Sombra, Rush

So if Rey Cometa and Cavernario – one spot higher than would normally appear – is the fourth (mask, women, opener) anniversary show match, could the main event be the fifth? That’s the national trios champions against their most natural challengers, two weeks out from the show. That’s pretty much exactly how CMLL title programs work and would get the Rush/Casas feud and all those guys on the card.

That leaves room for one more match, probably something with Volador, Dragon Rojo, Shocker and Rey Escorpion and two less certain spots. That tecnico spot is going to be rough – Maybe Mistico? Maybe Titan? Maybe Porky? – and the rudo spot isn’t any more clear.

Sexy Team gets it’s first match as a full trio since MARCH.

Ultimo Guerrero versus La Sombra for CMLL Universal championship, AAA to Cancun

Tonight’s CMLL show is headlined by Ultimo Guerrero vs La Sombra in the CMLL Universal final. The winner becomes the first two time champion: Ultimo Guerrero won the first tournament in 2009, La Sombra won the second in 2011. Ultimo Guerrero, on a hot streak leading into the his mask match three weeks from today, is the heavy favorite to win. The bigger concern is the match itself, as both guys styles suggest they may not bring out the best match in each other.

There’s not a lot else of note on the show. It’s odd. There are definitely good sounding matches (2/4/5 all have possibilites and we’d be looking forward to the opener if there was a chance in the world it’d air.) CMLL should be building a few more matches to complement Atlantis/Euforia and have not really teased anything of late. There are ongoing and old issues which could be pressed into resolution, but they need ot start flagging up to the fans they’re going to happen if they plan on selling tickets for the show.

Alberto del Rio and La Parka are displayed on the poster for the AAA/Hard Rock show in Cancun, which takes place on 09/13 and 09/14. That suggests Del Rio’s first regular TV appearance will be part of the 09/14 TV taping, the main event of the tourist weekend. (No idea if he’ll be wrestling.) That’s a Lucha Uprising weekend, which means the people working on the US TV show miss the working luxury vacation.

This show will probably air on 09/27, and the Veracruz taping the following week will take care of 10/04. Point is, AAA Mexico will be taping way ahead of airing. They may have zero to two TV shows left after Veracruz to Heroes Inmortales, which is usually in early/mid October. I wouldn’t expect a lot for that show, given the limited build to other AAA big shows this year, the few amount of new TV shows, Guerra de Titanes (December) being more important to AAA, and AAA probably more concerned with the events ongoing in the US for the next couple months.

Besides that show, Alberto del Rio and Sin Cara appear to be booked for shows in Sudan. No date is listed.

Programming Note: I’m heading back to Mexico City! I’ve mentioned this elsewhere but don’t think I’ve actually said that here. I’m going from September 12th to September 22nd. I’ll definitely be at the CMLL Anniversary show and we’ve got arrangements to make the ChilangaMask show in Queretaro. I don’t think we’ve locked in anything else (except maybe that all minis show), but it’ll probably be the same bit of going to a show every day – probably the CMLL/IWRG shows but maybe not if something else seems more interesting. (AAA is running as far as possible away from Mexico City again this year. They’ve must’ve known!)

The idea is also to bring back the daily podcasts – people seemed to like them ok and it’s still easier to spend a half hour talking about shows than a couple hours writing about them. I grabbed a microphone off Amazon, so they may sound a little bit better this year.

I’m bringing a tablet and a keyboard so there will probably be result posts and other notes posted, just maybe not like usual. I’ve been working on a bunch of recaps and another year of newspaper clippings; if everything works out well, you’ll still get a post around lunchtime every weekday, but it may just be less current stuff.

I’m not sure about video posts on 09/16 and 09/23. My vague idea is I’ll just get stuff up on YouTube whenever I get a chance, but there just may not be a post full of downloads and such as usual. And some shows won’t get done at all for a while because the people who help with them will also be on vacation.

(I’m also expecting to be busy/tired when I get back home, so it may not be until that following weekend until things to get back to normal.)

== AAA ==

AAA-Televisa: They’ve got four matches left from TripleMania; I’ll guess opener and main event this week, leaving the cage match and mask/hair for next week.

== CMLL ==

FOX2: CMLL Universal Block A, and whatever else they have time for. Moved to 12:30pm this week.

52MX: Gran Guerrero vs Titan and the mysterious main event

C3: Shocker vs Maximo.

TVC Deportes (Puebla): They should be onto the Reyes del Aire show from 08/05, but they’re now four weeks behind and that’s meant a big skip of episodes in the past. (Of note, the recent Sombra/UG match here hasn’t aired, could be one of those skipped over.)
