recap

YOSHI-HASHI as Yoshihashi

I’m not going to do the traditional short description per matches here, because I basically did that for the recaps. This is going to be shorter than short. You still get your moving pictures.

Misterioso STRONG

Goto/KUSHIDA versus Mascara Dorada/Rush was that match of the night. Team Jalisco came out roaring and just took it to their more established team. This was finally getting to see Rush as a rudo, while weirdly also getting the same of Dorada. Rush came off looking like a monster in his first appearance and both singles matches were built well. This was a total success.

team Dive

I’ve watched very little NJPW this year. I went thru some of the CMLL participation early this month, but the entire Sombra G1 run is still sitting on my DVR, waiting for a day when I’ve somehow managed to exhaust all the lucha I have to watch. Tama Tonga was totally new to me and a nice little surprise. “Son of Haku” turns out to be less Haku islander and more excitable Jimmy Snuka islander. He really has a good sense of his character and the fans seemed to be getting into him. I’m also always trying to figure out how CMLL could use these people when they randomly bring them in for three weeks. They’ve been using the NJPW guys exclusively as rudo so far, but Tonga would get over great as a tecnico.

and then there was the time Diamante almost killed Yujiro
Volador Spiral

It appears they’re going to do Dino/Maximo vs Taichi/? every year, which is fine. Misterioso and Diamante fit in well in their roles and were surprisingly well accepted by the crowd. Mephisto could probably hang out with Chaos full time. I wanted more Volador vs Tanahashi, just because Volador versus any popular tecnico is a good time right now, but they did the right finish to set up Day 2 well. Okada kept reminding me of WWE’s Jack Swagger, appearing to be a physically talented guy but missing that extra spark to be a top guy. He did not seem near Tanahashi’s level. Not that I’m the first or last to say that.

CMLL (MON) 02/06/2012 Arena Puebla [El Pancracio, Porra Fresa]
1) Asturiano, Lestat, Stigma b Ares, Arissma, King Jaguar
Tecnicos took 1/3. “K”arissma and Lestat are feuding, Lestat took the rudos mask after the match.
2) Dalis la Caribeña, Dark Angel, Lady Apache b La Comandante, Princesa Blanca, Princesa Sugheit
Tecnicas took 1/3.
3) Ángel Azteca Jr., Delta, Guerrero Maya Jr. b Euforia, Pólvora, Rey Escorpion
Rudos took 1/3, Tirantes slow counting Delta when he had a ‘rana on Escorpion, then coutning faster for the rudo.
4) Rush b Psicosis
Mije helped Psicosis. Psiocsis took the first with his layout frontcracker, Rush took a belly to belly suplex, Rush took the third. Said to be good.
5) Negro Casas, Último Guerrero, Volador Jr. b Atlantis, La Sombra, Máximo
Negro jumped Sombra. Rudos took 1/3, Sombra losing via Casas face kicks to set up a title match for next week.

No Naucalpan results yet.

Torreon based exotico Sexy Libra passed away on Wednesday. He was 37, actively wrestling around the Laguna region, scheduled to work this weekend. Libra appeared on AAA TV once, when AAA was doing an all exoticos cage match. Cause of death is not listed.

Today’s Arena Mexico show is main evented by another Pesta Negra vs Blue Panther trios, with Dorada & Sombra on the tecnico. The Amapola/Estrellita feud gets the women’s trios all the way up to the fourth match. CMLL is building that match as if it will be a hair match at Dos Leyendas, but there’s no telling with them of late.

AAA tapes tonight in Zumpango, with Mesias/Wagner vs Halloween/Garza on top. Garza has worked as Mesias’ rival with Jarrett not around, so that’ll be the focus of the main event. The focus of the show should be putting things in place for Rey de Reyes, which they’ve only hinted at so far. Arturo Cruz says Dianstia is the surprise tecnico mini on today’s AAA taping. This makes sense; he’s the winner of the Quien Por Pinta La Corona minis division and has a tecnico style.

Lucha Libre USA: Masked Warriors has a show in San Jose on March 30th. This is not a system hiccup, they had a press conference yesterday and everything. This promotion has been left to for dead twice and keeps coming back. Tickets will be between $40 and $87 (with Ticketmaster fees.) I have a hard time believing they’ll sell at that price, but this group does the unbelievable from time to time.

El Hijo del Santo’s Record column spend many words explaining how much better lucha libre was when the luchadors all handled the rights to their characters themselves and the promoters apparently did not exist. This is a long way of explaining name changes for the minis on the Todo x el Todo shows; no one’s going to use a name CMLL or AAA can claim to own, so no promotion can try a lawsuit. Besides Mascarita Dorada as Mascarita Platedita, the original Mascarita Sagrada will be going as Pequeno Lucky (similar to a name he used in WWE) and Mini Cibernetico will now be Escorpion King. Santo has said he pays no attention to CMLL previously, and he means it he thinks Escorpion King is a name without issues.

IWL/DTU hype: women’s match talk, Cerbero Negro and Fantasma de la Opera explaining why the indies are so much better,

recap

a bad time for Electrico

Demus 3:16, Pequeño Violencia, Pierrothito vs Astral, Bam Bam, Eléctrico: It seems like it’s been a long time since I’ve gotten to see Demus and Bam Bam. (Research backs this up: Bam Bam hasn’t made DF TV since October, Demus since the first day of November. Hmmm.) The breaking news is they’re really good and really fun, and they need to be around more. The opening bit of rudo discord was amusing as well. Demus’ finish needs a name, besides “vastly illegal maneuver.” Or should we just call it the Abismo Negro Driver?

sllllllllllllllllllide

Titán & Triton vs Pólvora & Ráfaga: Good setup match that I forgot to take any notes for this part. This recapping thing is too hard, I should stop soon.

running in place might be the best part

Atlantis, Delta, Guerrero Maya Jr. vs Morphosis, Psicosis, Volador Jr. for the Mexican National Trios Championship: Just kind of a match for two falls. The third fall dive sequence was good, but what it made it notable was the back and forth sequence following that. I don’t think this was close to the Arena Mexico version of this match because that felt like a more complete one, but it was pretty exciting down the stretch. Still pretty good for 12 minutes.
