Delta, Rey Cometa, Sagrado vs Kráneo, Namajague, Olímpico: An okay match with the usual guys. Nothing wrong with it, but nothing to stand out between the similar ones. Cometa did not do the Brillo Tornillo this week, which is fine given how close he came to missing it. I wish we got to see more of Darth Vader & Yoda’s entrance.

Rush, Super Porky, Thunder vs Averno, Mephisto, Volador Jr.: Poor. The técnico trio really made miss Bufete del Amor. Thunder’s not any good, and Porky has no business being allowed to being in wrestling matches at this point. Rush was fine, but there’s better matches for him and everyone else in this match.

Black Terry Jr. has a lot of photos from Saturday’s Toryumon Mexico show. I haven’t seen results yet, but it seems like the usual Ultimo Dragon-ness. (Atlantis won a TV!) A Mascarita Dorada II did wrestle on the show, as did Vengador Radiactivo from Arena Xalapa. The Dragon Rumble seemed to include people even more random than usual – Relampago! Violento Jack! Aero Boy! – and also Magnus.

The turnout for Dragonmania, which I believe is mostly free tickets, looks to be more than the Friday or Sunday shows in the same building. Black Terry Jr. was told he could not post his photos from TripleMania. AAA let the Yahoo! Deportes photographer post his photos.

R de Rudo also has photos from the AAA post show press conference. It’s something to see El Hijo del Perro Aguayo, covered in blood, dedicating his win to the late Hector Garza. One year ago, El Hijo del Perro Aguayo was covered in blood, blaming Hector Garza for his loss.

R de Rudo also interviewed Hijo del Santo about his son. Santo sort of refers to his stint in NOAH like a summer job, “he could’ve just taken a break in Mexico, but he decided to work.” He wants Tempestad to not wrestle like a clone of himself and Santo and instead be his own complete luchador. Hijo del Santo says Canek is one of the best Mexican heavyweights ever and he’d like Temepstad to wrestle more like him.

Tecnicos took 1/3 in a good match, with a La Mistica on Ultimo Guerrero to win it. Estetas become 25th champion.

First three matches were not good. Rush started destroying people in the semimain and things turned around. Main event was a lot of fun. It was very much an Ultimo Guerrero match, but the tecnicos got to look exactly like the high flying tecnico trio they were set up to be. It probably deserved to be at a higher exposure occasion (though the crowd appeared to be good) and it’s not helpful to lump all the big tecnico triumphs together because it hurts their impact, but it’s made for some fun matches.

Running list of people who appear to be in the cage match CMLL hasn’t announced: Rush, Mr. Aguila, Negro Casas, Rey Escorpion, Blue Panther, Averno, Brazo de Plata, Shocker and Maximo. Terrible fits based off the En Busca de un Idolo incident on Friday, which would make an even 10.

Women’s match had some frustrating results, even beyond the finish. Crowd was mixed at best about Dallys winning, unlike when Goya won a similar match. (They were also very unhappy when Goya lost.) Never try a casita on a Casas family members unless they’ve tried one first. It works if you escape and put on your own, but if you try it before they do, you’re doomed.

This seems minor to complain about compared to other streaming issues, but Terra’s had a problem with their feeds lagging behind each other for weeks now and really needs to fix it already. It doesn’t do their product any good for different parts of the show airing at different times, especially when someone of those feeds don’t finish before the show ends. Maybe now that they’re “only doing two shows a week”, they can find some time to resolve this problem.

The actual talk about the show itself has gotten passed over for talk about the iPPV. I’m going to try and do both, but I’ll do the talk about the actual show first.

The tag match sounds like it was the best match of the show, and the legends match the least in quality. Main event is the style thing – if you like the bloody, interference and controversy style match, you’ll like it.

The big omission from those results was Abismo Negro being added to the Hall of Fame. Abismo family and Mini Abismo accepted on his behalf. That was an easy call and probably in the works for a while. Hector Garza should be added next year.

One big correction on the results: Goyito Perez was NOT at the show. He posted on Twitter about 90 minutes before the show that he was not going to make it. (Deportivo was the first to pick up on this.) Octagon later mentioned Goyito suffered a knee injury, which is an odd thing to crop up just 90 minutes before a show. Perez’s previous posts were about flight issues. I dunno. Whatever happened, it may explain why Dorian Roldan was involved in the Legends match, a storyline he didn’t really fit in at all – either he was there to get hit by Perez, or Perez was supposed to hit someone in the match and they needed a new way to set up a questionable finish. It still seems like a spot that might have better fit with Konnan – remember, he was the guy being credit for putting the team together at the AAA Press Conference – but maybe it’ll make more sense when it airs.

That match kept the Villano IV vs La Parka feud. That’s a pretty great mask match for Villano IV if he’s getting it. It also continued a theme on the night: as much as AAA has talked up it’s great new young stars, it went strongly behind the older names tonight. Ray Mendoza Jr. (Villano V) was brought in to face Texano Jr. in a title match down the line, the Legends match was moved to the semimain and even the tag team title match turned into background for another Vampiro vs Konnan match.

There’s a good line of thought that you need recognizable names if you’re heading to new places, but it’s a disappointing turn of events to anyone who likes the current AAA product for the exciting young luchadors. There was not a big break thru moment for any of them on this show. Vampiro is far more popular than Fenix because of his fantastic 90s run. The problem is all the fans of Vampiro are the fans from that time; anyone new is going to see a man who does not have much left offer. Lucha libre in general is obsessed with bringing back those fans from past glory periods, but they might want to give reasons for new fans to come aboard at some point.

Texano could be pointed as the young break thru luchador, but his impact has been greatly minimized. It sounds like they gave his title match all the treatments of a major match, without actually positioning it like one. Positioning it fourth on the card, behind another title match, and setting up a retired luchador as the top challenger makes it a secondary title. AAA also has become weirdly reliant on fan’s knowledge and interest in CMLL storylines to make the challengers to this title. We were supposed to care about Heavy Metal vs Texano because (among other reasons), they had a hair match that even I couldn’t remember. We’re supposed to take Villano V seriously as a challenger not because of anything he did in AAA years ago, but because he beat Blue Panther in a mask match. For a promotion who has no regard for CMLL’s creativity (for good reason!), this is so weird.

Of course, the heavyweight title is still better than the trios titles.

iPPV notes.

People who contacted uStream about a refund have been told refunding is in process. Really just a form letter, but it’s a good sign about getting their money.  AAA’s comments on this suggest this part of the deal is not in their hands – it may be something where uStream holds the money until the show airs successfully and so AAA doesn’t have access to it themselves to return it. This may not be a speedy process; uStream customer support seems off on the weekend (which sure didn’t help here) and so they’re just starting to handle it today. uStream should refund everyone, but it would not hurt to contact customer support to ask for one. If you did order the show, let me know how your refund works out.

AAA has been very apologetic about the situation, but also are shifting all the blame  to uStream. I find it hard to believe it’s completely uStream’s fault based on other promotions having no problem with the service. It does not absolve AAA from handling the iPPV failure horribly on the day of the show. There was little word on what was going on, there was evidently no backup plan in case of a problem (which should have been no surprise given other iPPVs) and users had to wait until about midnight to get a solution. AAA was unprepared.

Again, iPPV revenues for TripleMania were not much. If I had to guess, I’d guess it was less than they paid for Matt Morgan. There’s the issue of annoying a dedicated group of fans. There’s also the issue that AAA wants to run in two different countries as essentially two different companies, and the level of issue here doesn’t inspire a lot of confidence in that. Maybe they just didn’t have the manpower to make sure affected people were kept informed about the outage yesterday, but if they didn’t have enough for that, are they going to be handle the logistics of TV tapings in different countries? 1 bad iPPV doesn’t mean they can’t pull this off, but throw in things like whatever happened with Octagon Jr.  and other issues and you should have some doubts about this. AAA was ambitious to put on an iPPV, but they were not capable of their ambitions. AAA’s ambitious to run in the US, and I don’t know.

I think there also a cultural divide going on. As a hardcore wrestling fan in the US, we’re tend to be more skeptical/paranoid about wrestling promotions. We tend to look for them to stay true to carnival roots, focused on ways to scam the money from the marks, and the entertaining stuff that happens in between is just a happy accident. That’s really not true of most promotions, but I think we’ve got our guards up for something like to happen. (Unfortunately, I think this is why the Masked Republic Kickstarter has struggled so far.) When a show takes $15 for a show that didn’t happen, that plays right into those beliefs. I’m not sure it’s the same feeling in Mexico or elsewhere. I kind of get the vibe that it’s more a “they tried, these things happened, let’s just move on” in some places, but then I also saw a lot of angry words in Spanish in uStream’s chat box last night.

Update 1:30pm: Marisela Pena is saying they flew in a uStream tech from Germany who could not get the stream to work. AAA had no problem broadcasting the show up to the point where uStream was supposed to take over, so they feel it’s uStream’s fault. The uStream tech blamed AAA.

Espanto is disturbing

Fresbee & Magnus vs Espanto Jr. & Herodes Jr.: Mr. Niebla appears to have been a bad influence on Espanto! Match was okay, which means good for the openers around here. Magnus sure has fallen a long way to be teaming with Freesbe.

Goya Kong, Lady Afrodita, Luna Mágica vs Amapola, Mima Shimoda, Tiffany: This match was so tedious. I feel like I must get something out of it so it’s not the worst way I’ve ever used my time, but it’s very tough. Afrodita being the worst of the three técnicas must be it. Afrodita seems strongly disliked by the rudas, and not on a tecnica vs ruda way. I kind of want to see them put Isis in the match, because I must know how bad she must be if these three are allowed to have matches and she’s not.

Hombre Bala Jr., Pegasso, Sagrado vs Cancerbero, Hijo del Signo, Virus: Hombre Bala got a spotlight match with a good rudo in Cancerbero, and had a bad outing. He just looked rougher than usual in a few different spots. Signo is not as good a partner as Raziel, so not so much the team work you’d want out of a Cancerbero match but everyone else was fine.

Garza

Delta, Fuego, Guerrero Maya Jr. vs Boby Zavala, Disturbio, Vangellys: An okay match for one with a couple guys who aren’t used to the rest of this mix. Bobby was fine, but Disturbio didn’t seem as aggressive as he usually is in segundas. Delta also seemed off. They still had an okay match, but probably not as good as one as they could if (until?) Zavala and Disturbio are more regularly facing these guys. As usual with CMLL replacements, they were treated as if on the same level with everyone else.

Diamante Azul, Mistico, Thunder vs Rey Bucanero, Terrible, Tiger: You can’t put Thunder and Azul in the same match. No rudo team is good enough to handle them both. Thunder disappeared for a while in the second fall, requiring the rudos to run around to cover up for him. Azul looked competent by comparison. Add on Místico, and it’s a credit to TRT to get as much out of this match as they did.

The uStream was listed as offline for most of the first hour it was supposed to be on, then “Live” without every actually showing a picture. AAA twice mentioned there were problems and they were working on them, then mentioned there’d be that press conference to explain it. It wasn’t immediately obvious they meant a press conference after the show.

None of this was mentioned on the uStream themselves page itself. Instead, this message was put up, blaming uStream from the problem. No explanation of what would happen next was listed on the uStream page and AAA stopped updating the situation on their Twitter after the message was posted.

Roberto Figuera, who was at TripleMania and has a business relationship with AAA, posted this message on Twitter

That says the show will reair on Wednesday at 8 pm. AAA themselves have said nothing about this.

AAA handled this horribly. Not having the stream up is disastrous. AAA also has talked a lot about how important social media is for them, and they completely fell down there. AAA did not acknowledge there was a problem until 15-20 minutes after the show started, they did not keep people updated, they did offer a remedy, and they made people wait for information from other sources to find out what went on.

Plenty of other wrestling companies have used uStream without having this happen. Plenty of other people were able to use the internet in Arena Ciudad de Mexico. Only AAA had this problem, and their shifting of the blame seems duplicitous at best. It’s also beside the point – the only thing people watching that window wanted to see was TripleMania or some info about when they might see TripleMania. AAA gave an excuse instead, and not even hint about when they might get to see what they paid for.

iPPV revenue is tiny portion of the revenue for this show. If they had 200 buys for a show with no promotion outside of Mexico, and no promotion on their TV as an iPPV, that would’ve been a grand success. AAA still sold conventional PPVs (which dropped off during opener but was fine for the rest of the show) and still appear to have sold most of the tickets in the building.  Still, iPPV buyers were either the strongest fans AAA has or casual fans from other places AAA hopes to be running soon, and AAA has left those fans feeling robbed. Those aren’t the fans who are going to support you going forward.

If AAA ever does another iPPV, I would advise not buying it. Go to a show if you can, but don’t trust that AAA can handle something like this.

Honestly, I’m about as furious about how they handled the feed not working as about the feed itself. It’s unacceptable for a fly by night indy promotion, much less a promotion that claims to be major league.

Dorian apologizes for the problem. He puts the blame on uStream. He says refunds are already being processed and the show will be posted on AAA’s website tomorrow as a make good.

Assuming the refunds actually turn up in full, that’s a good first step. It doesn’t make up the time people spent trying to watch a show they couldn’t see, or missing out on the experience of watching a show live. It’s enough to stop people from hounding you about this problem for the rest of time, but it doesn’t totally make up for the experience. I’d still say not to buy an AAA iPPV in the future until they have a strong track record.

It’s odd to have a TripleMania without a mystery person announced. Maybe one or two will still show up.

Tecnicos usually win these on TripleMania, don’t see that changing here. Probably something with Pimpinela winning.

Crazy Boy & Joe Lider seems like the only team that would still specificlaly teaming after this even if they didn’t win, so I guess they might as well have the championships. This seems like the math with the msot potential variance in quality – it oculd be really good, or the different elements could not work well.

3) Monster Clown, Murder Clown, Psycho Clown vs Jeff Jarrett, Matt Morgan, Monster Pain

AAA seems high on working with WWL and they’ve always been high on Jarrett, so they get a win here to set up nothing in particular.

4) Chessman vs Heavy Metal [#1 Contenders, AAA HEAVY]

Chessman as a surprise finish. Maybe Metal gets somethign to save face. There doesn’t seem like any next contenders for Texano for the next big show, which would normally mean a setup for Metal to get another shot if he didn’t have all that baggage.

5) Winner Of Chessman Versus Heavy Metal vs Texano Jr. [AAA HEAVY]

There’s no reason for Texano to lose his title. Maybe Vampiro makes an appearance here, though Texano really shouldn’t need the help. Unsure how the crowd would react to a Chessman vs Texano match though.

Universo 2000 gets to appear on a TripleMania again, gets punched in the face by a UFC fight for a loss, everyone else makes it out fine.

Mesias cheating but denying he’s turned rudo for a while longer seems to fit. This is the start of a long road.

Perro wins with at least one visual win for Cibernetico. Craziest match on the show.

Very good match. Rush & Terrible were in their team’s corners. Fuego and Negro got along with their unusual partners, and both teams maintained unity for the match. Team Virus took falls 1/3 to win the match. Vangellys beat Stuka with a northern lights suplex, and Virus beat Valiente with a Gori Bomb for the win. Rush attacked Negro immediately after the match was over, and Terrible made the save for the opposing trainer. Rush stormed off, and Stuka & Valiente seemed upset with Negro.
6) Máximo, Rush, Shocker DQ Mr. Águila, Rey Bucanero, Rey Escorpión
Straight falls. Rudos were DQed for excessive violence after the match, then Maximo snuck in a foul on Rey Escorpion for the win. Crowd was not happy with Rush, who stormed off for a second time the night while everyone else was making challenges.
7) Atlantis, La Sombra, Titán b Pierroth, Último Guerrero, Volador Jr.
No details, but it appeared Sombra & Atlantis unmasked their rivals during the match and Pierroth was left taking Titan’s moves. Sombra and Atlantis beat Volador and UG in the end.

En Busca de un Idolo match is definitely worth watching Tuesday if you missed it live. The Terra feed went live during entrances for the Tuesday match, so more than half aired.

Todo  el Todo held a press conference Friday, because the day you want to try to get attention for your indy group is three days before the biggest show of the year. Anyway, the women didn’t get along and Zumbi said his youth would be enough to beat Demon & Santo. Santo did not agree. Hijo del Santo also appeared at a new Santo exhibition.

I’m not sure what to make of the Heavy Metal injury story. He had a shoulder taped (and his ribs, but that might have been to keep his arm to his side.) I am unsure if this was supposed to be an injury from something backstage that was not shown, or if this is follow up to something we won’t see until TripleMania, or if this might prohibit him from wrestling on TripleMania. I guess we find out tomorrow.

I am more sure what to make of the main event – the AAA vs Legends storyline will keep going (and maybe be the focus of the Fusion brand, since that’s the group that needs people, La Parka is in that group, and the indy guys wouldn’t be assigned to either brand?)

It seems like AAA was closer to Escoria getting another shot at the cruiserweight title, so Ozz asking for a shot is out of left field. Probably would be fun.

Next taping is Sunday! And after that I’m much less sure.
