AAA to Phoenix & Acapulco, CMLL Noche de Campeones, Faby Apache in the Gran Prix

CMLL

Tonight is CMLL’s Noche de Campeones show, with six challengers decided by fan votes.

CMLL (FRI) 09/30/2022 Arena México
1) Pierrothito vs Mercurio © [CMLL MINI]
3rd defense
2) Euforia, Hechicero, Mephisto vs Gemelo Diablo I, Gemelo Diablo II, Sagrado © [CMLL TRIOS]
2nd defense
3) Amapola & Silueta vs La Jarochita & Lluvia © [MEX WOMEN TAG]
10th defense (8th on CMLL shows)
4) Dulce Gardenia & Espíritu Negro vs Ángel de Oro & Niebla Roja © [CMLL TAG]
5th defense
5) Suicida vs Titán © [CMLL WELTER]
5th defense
6) Místico vs Rugido © [NWA MIDDLE]
5th defense

It feels like a big night for Rugido and Suicida; they’re only getting these singles matches because they had such fan support, and now they get to prove they’re deserving of it. Rugido seemed to be thought of highly when he was a Welcome To Mi Barrio wrestler, people speaking positively of him as a person as much as a wrestler. He hasn’t stood out to me at all in his first year in CMLL; he’s not bad, but I haven’t got why people were excited about him. Tonight’s a good chance to make an impression. Suicida has shown improvement since switching to that gimmick and he’s a promising star, but a long singles match is a big test for him.

I don’t think it’s all or nothing. Los Cancerberos and Rey Cometa & Espiritu Negro are the past examples of people who benefited from fan voting to get title matches. Cometa memorably blew his big dive but still did otherwise well, and CMLL seemed to move up both acts just by virtue of that demonstrated fan support. (And by people leaving making for more spots available.) There’s a decent chance Rugido & Suicida get moved up a spot or two as long as they just do OK.

A night of champions powered by fan votes seems like a great place to do a title change. This show doesn’t line up great for title changes. Mistico, Titan and the Chavez should not be losing their title matches. Mercurio hasn’t been champ for long and Pierrothito winning would feel a step backwards. La Jarochita & Lluvia losing to a team that’s not a team after their very long title reign feels underwhelming, though I don’t have confidence in that title reign ending in a big way. That just leaves the trios titles as something to change hands for the sake of changing. Even there, CMLL’s been much higher on Los Gemelos Diablos that I would’ve guessed so far and so I’m not even sure that’ll change hands.

It’s the usual Ticketmaster PPV.

The CMLL Aniversario show goes up on CMLL’s YouTube channel Sunday afternoon.

CMLL (SUN) 10/02/2022 Arena México
1) Acero & Aéreo vs Minos & Pequeño Violencia
2) Cachorro, Leono, Sangre Imperial vs Cholo, Inquisidor, Nitro
3) Arkalis, Panterita del Ring Jr., Suicida vs Kráneo, Okumura, Raider
4) Diamond, Magia Blanca, Volcano vs El Coyote, Pólvora, Virus
5) Atlantis, Dragón Rojo Jr., Titán vs Ángel de Oro, Stuka Jr., Terrible [Relevos Increíbles]

Kraneo may weight twice as much as Pantertia del Ring Jr. Nothing on Sundays matters but that match might be worth checking out when it airs (10/14) because Raider and Panterita Jr. are really good together.

CMLL (MON) 10/03/2022 Arena Puebla
1) Hijo de Centella Roja vs Black Tiger
2) Asturiano & Millenium vs Espíritu Maligno & Fuerza Chicana
3) La Jarochita, La Magnifica, La Vaquerita, Lluvia, Princesa Sugehit vs Amapola, Dark Silueta, Olympia, Reyna Isis, Tiffany [cibernetico]
4) Ángel de Oro, Niebla Roja, Terrible vs Gemelo Diablo I, Gemelo Diablo II, Sagrado
5) Euforia, Soberano Jr., Stigma vs Magia Blanca, Rugido, Stuka Jr. [Relevos Increíbles]

Rugido getting a main event and the cibernetico feel like they’re setting up things, but it’s never sure if things are going to happen.

CMLL (TUE) 10/04/2022 Arena Coliseo Guadalajara
1) Optimus & Trono vs Omar Brunetti & Vaquero Jr.
2) Micro Gemelo Diablo I & Micro Gemelo Diablo II vs Chamuel & Perico Zacarías
3) Adrenalina, Explosivo, Fantástico vs Bestia Negra, Difunto, Zandokan Jr.
4) Dark Silueta, La Jarochita, Lluvia vs La Magnifica, Reyna Isis, Sexy Sol
5) Crixus, Mano Negra Jr., Rebel Warrior vs Ángel Rebelde, Halcón Negro Jr., Joker
6) Hijo del Villano III, Rokambole Jr., Villano V Jr. vs Furia Roja, Guerrero de la Muerte, Ráfaga

Hijo del Villano III is the only main roster male wrestler on this show. Guadalajara remains eccentric. The Villano V kids actually were supposed to team with the other Villano III last night in Arena Aficion. Or at least that’s what the poster indicated, who knows. Jarochito and Isis get to bring their match here and the Micors make an appearance.

Mano Negra Jr. and Rebel Warrior appear to be new members of that family wrestling. Rebel Warrior wears a half Warrior mask. It’s a bit unnerving to see someone in a half Warrior mask less than a year after Warrior Jr. passed away due to injuries from an in-ring accident.

CMLL’s 7v7 announcement for the Gran Prix de Amazonas seemed to be a setup for a surprise 8th person, similar to Mistico and Mesias being “late” additions to the men’s teams. It was also obvious Faby Apache would attract attention if she joined CMLL. The question was only if CMLL and Apache would be willing work together. That question got answered on Wednesday, as Faby Apache made a surprise appearance at the end of Wednesday’s CMLL Informa to announce her participation in the Gran Prix. Apache has never wrestled in CMLL prior; her father left in 1994 and she started in AAA. Apache seemed to be on the way out of AAA all year and announced she had left at the end of August, but some CMLL media doesn’t pay a lot of attention and reported this as a jump from one to another.  Apache said in that interview that she was only in for the Gran Prix. Apache also did interviews with the media following Informa where she said she was not under contract but in for “some dates.” That sounds similar to the Mesias deal, where we’ve seen him on occasional Friday nights but not working the usual loop. Apache said all the right things in her interviews: her career wouldn’t be complete without stepping foot in the Arena Mexico ring, she didn’t know all the CMLL wrestlers but obviously they’re high quality if they wrestle in CMLL, CMLL really recognizes and respects luchadoras. Apache coming to CMLL got covered in all the usual CMLL media outlets.

Faby Apache has been a great wrestler, has had some of the best women’s matches in the history of Mexican wrestling, and still is very good at what she does. The AAA fans adored her, even when AAA really wasn’t doing much with her. She was well known enough that CMLL fans will be excited to see her. CMLL wrestlers have talked positively about wanting to wrestle Apache when her name has come up via media interviews in the past. This is going to be a big deal for those fans who see Faby Apache versus Marcela or Faby Apache versus Amapola as a true dream matches. It almost feels like a modern boxing bit, where those types of dream matches tend to come after (or far after) the athlete’s prime but they still end up attracting large audiences because the legacy star power of the people involved. There’s no great recent history of women’s matches drawing notably large crowds in Arena Mexico but a Marcela versus Faby Apache match, done properly and done before the novelty, has a chance to be change that.

The other side is Faby Apache has a reputation among her fellow wrestlers as someone hard to get along with, someone who expects people to live up to her standards or suffer for it, someone who’s not interested in taking a back seat to anyone and someone unafraid to take a cheap shot at opponents in matches. AAA wanting to focus on other women seemed to be one of the reasons Apache left AAA and it’s hard to believe she’d be any happier just being one of many in CMLL’s division. Having Apache in for dates and only impactful dates is the best for everyone involved. There’s always going to be a  risk of an abrupt ending to this relationship after some public falling out.

Ivelisse was added to Team World as their 8th member. Ivelisse has barely ever wrestled in Mexico – maybe twice? – but she’s well known to lucha libre fans from her time on Lucha Underground. There was a moment where it felt like she was going to be a breakout star off that TV show and it never happened. The reasons she’ll give and the reasons everyone gives differ greatly. Ivelisse had difficulties in her pre-LU stint with WWE, which are largely agreed to be problems with how WWE was running their developmental system at the time and the specific people who were in charge. She though continued to have issues with people during and post LU, which has led to a lot of short stints and working on the fringes of wrestling. Most infamously, she was brought in to AEW in 2020, won a tag team tournament, and was out of the promotion in months after incidents including perceived pouting during a TV match. Ivelisse proceeded to complain about her time in AEW in outside interviews and months later seemed to be trying to talk her way into returning. She hasn’t really wrestled much since. She’s been based in the same Florida area as Oraculo and Lince Dorado, so there’s some pipeline there to CMLL.

(Ivelisse and Faby Apache are a lot alike in personality issues, just Apache had her father working for the promotion and got over before people she got on people’s nerves. Ivelisse didn’t have that family protection and never got so over people had to keep her around when she frustrated them.)

Ivelisse is a Spanish speaker and looked like she could still go in the ring when she wanted in AEW. She just didn’t want to and it got bad at the end. There are some really good wrestlers scheduled for this Gran Prix, and also some of them are true hotheads. This Gran Prix could be great, could descend into a hot mess with people getting upset with each other in front of the fans, or could be both of those things at the same time. The variance is super high in this match and it’s at least intriguing from that perspective.

CMLL also announced the Dia del Muertos shows will return on November 1st (Tuesday), 4th (Friday) and 6th (Sunday.) CMLL ran just two of these shows in 2021 and 2019, so expanding back to three is a sign CMLL believes interest in event shows is increasing. Terrible is the reigning Rey del Inframundo.

CMLL also mentioned the annual Best of Show will expand to two shows in early 2023. CMLL’s had some really good matches but this also likely more about CMLL believing they can draw an extra crowd with the concept.

The Fukumania channel posted a tribute video to Starman.

Fuego en el Ring has an interview with Dark Silueta, This interview exists because Lucha Memes said Dark Silueta was no longer on her show due to upcoming knee surgery and Dark Silueta wanted to shoot that story down. Silueta says her recent knee injury was actually an old injury flaring back up. She says feels 100% and isn’t going to need surgery. Sileuta say she has the usual pains after a match but she’s fine and she’s going to wrestle in all the important shows coming up in the next month.

Niebla Roja doesn’t want to be compared to other Ingobernables. As long as you’re going to put on the Yankees jersey, you’re going to be compared to past Yankees. (I think the real point is those guys would prefer to have their own identity but that’s not an option provided to them.)

Grako posted a video of himself in the hospital with an arm injury, and said he’ll be out a couple of months due to a torn muscle.

AAA

AAA has been busy and weird. Dorian Roldan had talked about possible shows in Acapulco and Phoenix in interviews, and said there would be bigger announcements coming about them. Tickets for those shows went on sale Wednesday without any big announcement. My guess is something got pushed back or changed and the people responsible for the on-sale dates were not told

The “Phoenix” show is on December 3rd in Tempe’s Mullet Arena, a Saturday night. This is the small building better known as the location where the NFL’s Arizona Coyotes will play now after running in to issues with their normal NHL venue. Tickets are on sale here and run between 25 and 100 dollars. AAA didn’t mention the show was happening until two hours after the tickets were put on sale.

AAA’s last foray into running into the US included moved and delayed-then-canceled shows. As a fan, it’s hard to recommend buying tickets for this show with so little information and the past history – you really should only spend money if you’re OK with it being held up for a refund for a while in the end. As a promotion, AAA needs a big show and lot of hype to get 3,000 people into a building. That’s slightly more than the moved Hulu Theatre ended up seating and that show kicked off with a big press conference and a bigger venue. This show kicked off with a couple of social media posts after tickets went on sale and a generic filler poster, and tickets have barely moved. On Thursday, a press release to some outlets (not this one) listed the show as a Blue Demon 100th birthday celebration, with Blue Demon, Psycho Clown, Vampiro, Hijo del Vikingo, Lady Shani and Sexy Star advertised. That is Hijo del Vikingo’s first advertised US booking. I’m told at least one person on that list only found out that show existed and they were booked on it only because I mentioned the press release on Twitter.

I think AAA’s theory is there are plenty of Hispanic people in the Phoenix area, so if they show up with a major lucha libre show and let the people know, they’ll get a good attendance. They’d like the non-Hispanic people to buy tickets too, but they’re betting on an affinity for their style of wrestling to sell people on coming to the show. A Blue Demon-centric show is a way to sell people on it being authentic lucha libre. They haven’t really let any one know it’s happening at this point. They got two months to figure it out.

Given AAA’s history with US live events, I would advise to only buy a flight/hotel if they’re refundable. You’ll get the ticket back eventually if something goes wrong, so just make sure you get everything else back.

The Acapulco show is on December 28th, a Wednesday, at new venue Arena GNP, opened this past fall. It was listed as a capacity for 10,400 for a tennis event. It might be a little different for lucha libre. The tickets are pricey for a Mexico-based show (660 up to 2340); it’s gotta be a Rey de Reyes level event, almost a fourth TripleMania. My first thought was maybe this would be where some of those AEW/AAA champions might show up, but it’s a Wednesday, that seems unlikely. AAA did acknowledge the on-sale of this show after it happened.

This Acapulco show fits the idea of a year-end event with a multiperson cage match to wrap up the many lingering midcard feuds. It appears wrestlers have been told that’s the plan; guys like Aerostar and Myzteziz immediately started doing social media posts pushing their mask matches to take place on that show. How many of the AAA midcard feuds can I remember in this paragraph? Villano III Jr. & Octagon Jr. had the eye thing. Myzteziz & Argenis have the gimmick thing. I’m not even sure why Parka Negra & Aerostar are mad at each other. The Laredo Kid & Antifaz feuded got totally messed up somewhere along the way but I suppose it’s still on (and Anitfaz is the leading candidate to lose any cage match he’s in.) Maybe the Crazy Boy/Dragongate vs Iguana/Hamburguesa feud will last for more than one TV taping. Is Arez still feuding with the Vipers? I watch that show every week and I can’t say for certain. That’s a good place to stop.

Mas Lucha posted an interview with Dorian Roldan from after the TripleMania preess conference last week. The vibes were weird in the first few minutes of this interview. Roldan said he was very happy with the lineup, but he didn’t seem happy about other things. I’m not sure if I was missing something or if there was something Roldan wanted to say but didn’t feel comfortable just putting out there and had to talk around it. The message I got, internationally or not, was that Roldan had doubts about the return on investment of foreign talent – more so the higher priced (AEW) foreign talent – and thought this TripleMania would be unaffected by skipping them. The Young Bucks were suggested by Jose Manuel Guillen as people fans might have wanted to see and Roldan said that having them face the Hermanos Lee would cost guys like Komander & Myzteziz their spot and he thought those guys earned to be on this show. Roldan also expressed a belief that TripleMania Tijuana was better than TripleMania Monterrey because they had less people booked, and he wanted quality over quantity. Roldan’s belief was that if Vikingo really is the 8th best wrestler in the world, then maybe he’s internationally famous enough that him versus Rey Fenix is a big deal on their own and they don’t need more people. Roldan said he was specifically going to look at the FITE numbers for Monterrey and Mexico City to compare how they did with or without the Young Bucks. At the same time, Roldan seemed a bit skeptical Vikingo really was the 8th best wrestler. Roldan said Omega didn’t end up on the card but left open the possibility that someday his and AAA’s paths may cross again. Roldan said positive things about Kamille and Thunder Rosa, so it wasn’t like was against all foreign wrestlers being involved.

If Dorian Roldan doesn’t see the Young Bucks as being more valuable to a TripleMania show than Myzteziz & Komander, then there isn’t much of a case to bring in almost anyone from AEW. It may explain why AEW hasn’t been in a hurry to bring back FTR or Sammy & Tay if AAA doesn’t see them as a great return of investment. Roldan’s viewpoint seems different than what Konnan has expressed on his podcast.

Other notes including an aside mentioning a taping in Mexicali that hasn’t been announced. It appears to be after the Ciudad Juarez show. The 2023 calendar will be decided in October. The “3 TripleMania” plan was a success and they’re open to doing it again, but they haven’t committed to that plan. They’d like to bring back Vernao de Escandalo and Guerra de Titanes and they’re being skipped this year only due to uncertainty in how COVID would play out in 2022.  They’d like to run a show in Los Angeles WrestleMania weekend, it’s an obvious strong potential market for them, but they haven’t committed to doing it yet. Roldan says he’s spent this year traveling to US shows to get a sense of what works and doesn’t work, and understanding how different parts of the country react differently. Success for AAA in the US would be about 10 shows a year that draw between four and five thousands fans, which Roldan noted is an attendance 99% of US promotions don’t reach. Roldan was positive about Faby Apache and wished her luck with whatever was next. We didn’t know she was going to CMLL Gran Prix but he may have known.

AAA’s poster for TripleMania says the pre-show starts at 7 and the main show starts at 8. I’m not sure what’s meant to be on the pre-show. The FITE feed remains at 7 pm.

AAA TV on Space this Saturday is listed as starting at 5:50 pm, but those times can’t be trusted any time the show moves around. I’ll have on Twitch VOD if you miss it live.

  • Lady Shani, Reina Dorada, Sexy Star vs Flammer, La Hiedra, Maravilla
  • Mr. Iguana, Niño Hamburguesa, Willie Mack vs Dave The Clown, Dinámico, Emperador Azteca
  • Hijo Del Vikingo & Myzteziz Jr. vs Dragón Lee & Dralistico

AAA tapes TV in Zapopan (outside of Guadalajara) on Sunday night. Psycho Clown, Pagano and Sexy Star face Cibernetico, Sam Adonis and Chik Tormetnt in the main event. The obligatory star ratings chasing match is Hijo del Vikingo vs Laredo Kid vs Taurus. Arez, Aramis and Komander vs Flamita, Abismo Negro and Latigo could also be great. This show may air next week on Space but I’m less confident on the plan because of TripleMania.

AAA did put up the second part of the Torreon show on YouTube. The first try at that failed, with the previous week going up by mistake. The Hard Rock part 1 show is already set up to go live Sunday and that one looks problem free.

On the latest Keepin it 100, Konnan said he also tried to contact Adam Cole for TripleMania but said Cole couldn’t participate due to a concussion. Cole on AAA would’ve been a fun deal for a bunch of fans and I guess it never hurts to ask, but that seemed like a very long shot. The concussion issue has been well known since June and Cole was also known to have other injury issues prior; if someone under AEW contract is not healthy enough to wrestle for AEW it would be weird to see him in AAA.

Pagano received an award for his work in the Ciudad Juarez wrestling festival.

Plataformas News has a recap of a panel about live sports in the streaming era. Dorian Roldan participated and is briefly quoted, saying AAA’s goal is to broadcast where they’re going to get the most people seeing their product. They realize that different outlets will have different audiences and they want to turn as many as possible into AAA fans.

AEW

Bandido’s debut on AEW Dynamite ended in a loss to Chris Jericho in their ROH title match. It also was a spectacular match. Bandido’s first match in the wider Elite universe was the All In main event, a match infamously cut down on time because of other matches going longer. The decision there was to give Bandido as much spotlight as possible, since he was the guy the fans didn’t know, and it worked. This Bandido reintroduction was the same; Jericho let Bandido do everything he could to get himself over, and Bandido did every big move he had to do so. The crowd ate it up. (They also got a bunch more time than in All In.) It completely worked as far as getting Bandido over. The Wrestling Observer Newsletter reported AEW did make a contract offer to Bandido. In the past, I’ve had things to report on Bandido’s contract. I don’t have any additional information to report on this situation.

The flipside of Bandido’s happy experience in AEW is Andrade. Rumors of his unhappiness in AEW seemed to have started since Paul Levesque (HHH) took over WWE creative. It has been reported WWE reached out to many recently departed wrestlers about returning to WWE if they could get out of their current contract. It appears Andrade was one of those wrestlers, but that’s not been confirmed. Andrade at first vaguely disputed rumors of him wanting out on Twitter, and has since definitely played into those rumors. Following Wednesday’s show, he tweeted “30 seconds” (an apparent reference to his TV time on Dynamite) and “#FreeElIdolo.” Andrade previously indicated his contract lasted until the summer of 2024. The Wrestling Observer reported that AEW would not be giving releases on contracts. On one hand, Andrade’s discontent is entirely consistent: he was unhappy in WWE because he wasn’t getting to wrestle much and he’s unhappy in AEW because he’s not getting to wrestle much. On the other hand, it’s hard to have sympathy to see someone push their way out one company, signed with another company, and then agitate to go back to the original company. It must be frustrating to keep signing deals that go bad but at some point you’re the person responsible for signing them. It’s also hard to believe things will work out much better for Andrade in WWE in the long term than they did last time, no matter who is in charge. WWE hasn’t changed that much and they still have a lot of people. I’m not sure how this gets resolved in the near term.

Andrade’s been annoyed for a while but it has raised some eyebrows that it’s escalated the same week as Bandido came in and got a main event. Andrade infamously sent out a negative Twitter post about Bandido when he won the ROH Championship about Rush, then walked it back a day later. It may just be a coincidence but Andrade would’ve obviously loved to have that spot.

In one of his other tweets, Andrade congratulated birthday boy Rush for a signing a new contract. Tony Khan confirmed on Thursday that Rush has signed a contract. It’s strange that Rush signed a deal with AEW as his best friend campaigns to get out of AEW, but maybe Rush has been informed there’s no WWE deal waiting for him. No terms were announced.

Big Lucha

Big Lucha (FRI) 10/14/2022 Bandidos Gym, Iztapalapa, Distrito Federal
1) Carito, Tirano, Viajero vs King, Kong, Potro
2) Ayako Hamada & Faby Apache vs Catalina & Sussy Love
3) Cometa Maya, Éxtasis, Radioactivo vs Forneo, Sol, Torito Negro Jr.
4) Emperador Azteca vs The Tiger (Tamalupias) [KAOZ CRUISER]
5) Dark Cuervo, Dark Ozz, Dark Scoria, Dark Spíritu vs Accion Jackson, Bendito, Elemental, Flamita
6) El Bandido vs Yutani [BL WORLD]

This is the day before TripleMania, so you’ll have this show and Arena Mexico (Universal Femenil Block B) as options if you arrive early.

Yutani gets his biggest match ever. Emperador/Tiger does land on this show. I hated the segment on the last show but Tiger can be good and so can that match. The Third match continues an existing feud. King and Kong seem to be ending up as rudos.

It’s a Halloween-ish show, so the Dark Family is in. The second match might include a couple of murders too; Faby and Ayako are going to give Sussy & Catalina some nightmares.

This post had a typo on it and they put up a new version that fixed it. That puts Big Lucha ahead of 99% of Mexican wrestling promotions.

The Mexico City government sponsored tryouts started on Thursday. I saw people filming the matches, but I saw them filming only in Instagram Story clips. The camera filming might have been all local news. ImagenTV did a story, and UnoTV has an article on the tryouts with more footage. 62 wrestlers, 10 of them women. The obvious star of the first day is quoted: a micro sized luchador (1.27 m) named Oni who won over everyone when he could. I’m not sure if he’ll win but he seems certain to stick around Big Lucha in some capacity if he wants. The tryouts continue every Thursday with the final on October 27th.

IWRG

this week’s IWRG Retro

  • 2001-07-12: Maligno, Akuma vs Avisman I, Avisman II
  • 2001-07-12: Multifacetico, Super Astro 2000, Fantasy vs Bestia Rubia, Super Mega, Mega
  • 2005-06-23 Mistico , Sagrado, Matrix vs Ultimo Guerrero, Rey Bucanero, Scoprio Jr.

I had slight wrong lineups for the top two matches. IWRG’s back to Thursday live shows next week, so I’m not sure when there will be more of these. They did sign off talking as if there would de be more.

IWRG (SUN) 10/02/2022 Arena Naucalpan
1) John Tito vs Feroz
2) Sagittarius & Therius vs Mary Caporal & Satania
3) Noisy Boy, Paymon, Spider Fly vs Crazy King, Garra Mortal, Limbo
4) Aster Boy, Hijo del Alebrije, Tonalli vs Dick Angelo 3G, Mc-360, Puma de Oro
5) Hijo De Canis Lupus & Hijo del Pirata Morgan vs Rey León & VIP
6) Caballero de Plata, Diva Salvaje, Jessy Ventura vs Gran Pandemónium, Hijo de Pandemónium, Pandemónium Jr.

An IWRG show. Semimain is IWRG vs RGR.

IWRG’s Revolucionando show introduced the new Hijo de Canis Lupus. I believe he’s a current IWRG wrestler getting a new character; he said on the show he’d been wrestling for 13 or 14 years and was starting a new chapter of his career. The Morenos actually went to Chicago to endorse the new IWRG tag team champions and said there’s going to be challengers decided in Mexico.

Other News

LuchaWorld has this latest Lucha Report.

Maximo has been accused of domestic violence towards India Sioux, according to Record. This is mostly a missing piece. The incident, observed by both their children and the neighbors, took place on September 1st. India Sioux posted a message on Facebook on September 2nd, accruing him of being an addict and saying she was getting away from him. She’s since deleted the post. Maximo responded then that he and Sioux had actually separated a while back and he smooth over everything with Sioux’s family. That post has also been removed. Record says the incident is being investigated; it doesn’t appear charges have been filed at this point.

Record is a big sports newspaper so this story got picked up in a few places. SuperLuchas reported it too, but not a lot of wrestling sites. I don’t expect it to expect Maximo’s wrestling schedule; everyone has that “Maximo said he worked it out and everything is fine” post to fall back on.

A group of wrestlers visited the Mexican senate to ask for social security benefits. This seems to happen periodically with no real progress. The wrestlers mentioned are either low level guys or people I haven’t heard of at all. That’s probably going to be the next pressure point if this ever progresses: someone’s got to decide who qualified as luchadors eligible for the benefit. The pandemic gave El Fantasma and his commission office and I wonder if he’d get to keep that role or if someone else would come for it.

El Universal writes about Estrella Divina as the first transgender luchador. (I’m not 100% sure that’s an accurate designation but it’s close enough.) Divina says she doesn’t mind fans yelling things that may be meant as homophobic (including the “el Pu…” scream) because wrestling fans pay to let off steam.

Lucha Time has their first show of the year scheduled for today. They had a similar show scheduled for two weeks ago and it doesn’t appear to have happened, so I guess there’s no sure bet here either.

10/08 Riot (Nuesta Raza, Nueva Lucha)

Vanguardia , GCW (FRI) 10/14/2022 Deportivo 11 de Julio, Pachuca, Hidalgo
1) Steve Manson vs Dragón Suicida
2) Deciums & Juventud Aérea vs Hannya & Yuichi Kaura [LUCHA MANIAKAS TAG]
3) Nick Wayne vs GasparínDevitt Rodríguez
4) El Sable vs Gallego
5) Cole Radrick & Jimmy Lloyd vs Jitsu & Rey Dragón
6) Alex Colon vs Crazy King [tubes]
7) Jimmy © vs Joey Janela ©CalibusAdrenalina (Jalisco) [VANGUARDIA EXTRAORDINARIO, DDT EXTREME]
8) Cíclope & Miedo Extremo vs Drew Parker & El Mago [explosions, glass]

The other half of GCW’s tour in Mexico. The explosion match was fun last time they did it, though glass may make it a big more extreme. The Vanguardia and DDT titles could be stuck together. Match 3 could be good. Wayne is famously young but not the youngest on the show; I think Manson has him by at least two years for one.

I don’t want to put Alberto el Patron Twitter posts in your head, but Alberto comparing himself and Carlito to Batman and the Joker can not be ignored. Also, Alberto thinks Hulk Hogan’s biggest rival was the Iron Shiek??

The Grainmaker Wrestling Podcast has an interview with Lucha Memes’ Dhani Ledesma. I listed to it and got a better idea of how their business model is working at the moment. Ledesma gave an attendance of 68 for Battle of Coacalco, noting it was his worst turnout. It’s tough out there.

Stigma tossed his mask to Magia Blanca for the DQ.
5) Místico DQ Atlantis Jr.
Mistico tossed his mask to Atlantis Jr. to draw the DQ.

Strange to do the same exact finish in the top two matches but I think that speaks to level of care given to these shows.

Angel de Oro replaced Stuka on Tuesday. Tecnicos took 2/3, the last when Angel de Oro fouled Volador. He was DQed but counted his own pin anyway.

Volador/Angel de Oro might be an actual feud on a Tuesday show, a rare thing at this point.

I had issues with both this stream and the Guadalajara one. Both broadcasts had some weird audio issues going and that made everything fall apart when it stopped working. I was able to rescue Guadalajara and it went up on the drive this morning, this one I had to scrap and maybe it’ll go up later. I miss the stream just being up for everyone last week already.

4) Guerrero Maya Jr., Pegasso, Stigma vs Cancerbero, Luciferno, Virus
5) Fugaz, Místico, Soberano Jr. vs Dragón Rojo Jr., Niebla Roja, Terrible

Dragon Rojo matched up with Fugaz & Soberano, could be a direction either way.

Lucha Memes has a show on 10/16 in Arena Coliseo Guadalajaara. It has Hechicero vs Jonathan Gresham, which could be great. It has Atlantis & Octagon challenging for local tag team titles, which is very weird. It’s a show where I thought it would be useful to have English commentary because it’s the right show to boost viewership, except even I don’t know some of the opening guys so it’d be a challenge. That doesn’t really matter because Lucha Memes says there’s no plans to air it live or on delay. I’m willing to pay but I’m also willing to throw my hands up and move on.

On that Memes show, Sexy Sol is replacing Dark Silueta in a singles match with Lluvia. Lucha Memes mentioned Silueta will undergo surgery soon and was advised to work only tag matches until then. I figure Silueta is working to the Gran Prix and then getting a knee worked on. Dark Silueta would normally be a favorite to win the women’s CMLL Universal starting next week, and less so if she can’t wrestle in the singles match at the end.

CMLL Informa has a lot of the Night of Champions challengers: Los Infenrales, Amapola, Dulce Gardenia, Rugido, Suicida and Pierrothito.

CMLL posted a recap of the last few days of Stephanei Vaquer & Dalys in Japan. Vaquer got to meet with the Chilean ambassador to Japan, which was something she had pushed for on social media after she and Dalys got to meet with the Mexico ambassador earlier in the trip. Vaquer lost a title match to Saori Anou in Ice Ribbon, Dalys retained the CMLL Japan Women’s championship over Tae Honma. Vaquer, Dalys, Honma, Mei Surgura and Hikari Shimizu all were part of a press conference on Wednesday to promote the CMLL Gran Prix. Dalys & Vaquer have a show on 10/02 and are headed back to Mexico after.

PubliMetro asked Lluvia about her OnlyFans account. She had taken some photos for a calendar she sold and later uploaded the photos to Instagram. Her followers told her she should be selling that sort of content on OnlyFans instead. She’d previously heard that as a recommendation during the pandemic and had talked to others who were having success with OnlyFans. Lluvia was still hesitant and she had to work up the courage to try it. She says it’s been complicated to set up but she’s happy with the results. One piece of advice she got is to leave the OnlyFans for free for now to build up a following and only then start doing paid content. She’s planning on “very sexy” photos without “vulagirty or nudity” and she sees it as an additional income, not something that’s going to take her away from wrestling.

AAA

A new TV taping:

AAA TV (SAT) 10/08/2022 Explanada Malltertainment, Puebla, Puebla
1) Octagoncito & Sussy Love vs Mini Psycho Clown & Reina Dorada
2) Emperador Azteca vs ToxinPuma King
3) Octagón Jr. vs Villano III Jr.Abismo Negro Jr.
4) Mr. Iguana & Niño Hamburguesa vs Carta Brava & Chessman
5) Murder Clown & Pagano vs Cuatrero & Forastero

This wasn’t a TV taping until Monday, when AAA just abruptly started listing as is one. There doesn’t seem to be an obvious need for more TV; I can’t figure out when this one will air:

  • 10/01 Hard Rock Part 2
  • 10/08 Guadalajara (Zapopan) Part 1?
  • 10/15 TripleMania
  • 10/22 TripleMania Part 2?
  • 10/29 Guadalajara Part 2?
  • 11/05 Puebla??

This Puebla show doesn’t look like a planned TV taping lineup given the level of matches involved. We know the matches will change because they always do, but it doesn’t feel special. It feels like AAA doing the building a favor by converting it into an unplanned TV taping to make it attractive for ticket buyers, but I’m not sure if that’s the case either. It’s hard to figure out the plan here.

Also hard to figure is AAA having a new Mini Psycho Clown. That’s him on the AAA show. The previous one, who was minis champion for a short time, is the guy teaming with a new Mini Psycho Circus on the indie. I’m not sure why this change was made or why he’s getting to use the gimmicks if he’s been replaced.

The latest edition of Jeff Jarrett’s podcast is another discussion about AAA. Co-host Conrad Thompson mentions he’s going to be at TripleMania and that he spent a few hours with Konnan in Mexico in recently. For his part, Jarrett makes it sound as if his WrestleCon appearance was something decided just minutes before the show. Jarrett also claims he’s booked somewhere else the day of TripleMania. It would be consistent for AAA to start an angle with a foreigner and then that foreigner ends up busy the day of TripleMania. I’m not sure I believe Jarrett on this one. In possibly related news, the podcast included a long story about a real fight Jarrett & Psycho Clown got into after a match, though Jarrett assured us they’re all good now.

AAA had a swing of shows this week through the state of Puebla, with stops in the city of Puebla, Tehuacan and Atlixco. (This again might be a reason why the Puebla Mall show was upgraded to a TV taping.) All seemed to be government-sponsored shows to some extent and so there are articles talking about what a success they were with no details on the matches. The Tehuacan show made news for something that happened prior to the matches: part of a bleacher collapsed beneath a vendor, leaving him and his potato chips falling to the floor below. There is some video of the aftermath; the vendor appears to be shaken up but not seriously hurt. This isn’t something AAA is responsible for, the local promoter and the local government would be the ones in charge of the venue for a show like that.

Big Lucha

No Big Lucha World tonight. Bandido is busy. Big Lucha did announce their next show for 10/16, the day after TripleMania, and then removed the announcement.

IWRG

No Thursday show this week, as previously announced. Those should be back this week. IWRG will have another episode of Retro on their YouTube channel, and their Wednesday night talk show will have the lineup.

Other News

LuchaWorld has this week’s Poster-Mania.

The Lucha Memes Battle of Coacalco is up on IWTV.

Black Taurus faces Delirious and Laredo Kid & Trey Miguel face Ace Austin & Chris Bey on Thursday’s Impact show.

Leon luchador Fuerza K9 (Mario Rodolfo Galindo Sandoval) passed away Monday. No cause of death was mentioned but there were recent posts from friends mentioning Fuerza had been hospitalized with an illness and trying to raise money for his medical bills.

Box Y Lucha being Box y Lucha, has Irma Gonzalez as the biggest topic on issue 3520 (because she won a poll on their Instagram).

Jericho/Bandido for the ROH title on AEW Dynamite, AAA in Juarez on 11/20

This is the second post today. Scroll down for the weekend stuff.

I mentioned earlier how Big Lucha is the “it” Mexico indie promotion of the moment and how other groups want to associate themselves with Big Lucha to help get themselves over. I didn’t realize that extended to AEW.

AEW announced Bandido will challenge Chris Jericho for the Ring of Honor championship this Wednesday on AEW’s Dynamite show in Philadelphia. Bandido lost the Ring of Honor championship to Jonathan Gresham on the April 1st Supercard of Honor show. That match was put together when Sinclair owned ROH, though Tony Khan had taken control of the promotion by the time the match happened. Bandido hasn’t been booked in the wider Khan-verse since that time. That match seemed to go well, and fans have been asking about seeing him. There are many AEW/ROH people already, and there may be reasons beyond Bandido himself that he’s not been back. It would be cool if this was the start of a regular Bandido run in Dynamite but I’m only thinking of it as a one-off for now.

This Jericho/Bandido title match seems to exist primarily to add some authenticity to Jericho’s new ROH title reign by having him face a former champion. There are not a lot of recent former champions to choose from at the moment. Jericho beat Claudio Castagnoli, and the rematch is probably being held off. Jonathan Gresham had his falling out with AEW. Rush is an option but he’s taken a few high-profile losses in AEW lately. PCO and Matt Taven are working for Impact and may not be available. Jay Lethal and Dalton Castle are around but not pushed at world singles challenger level.  Jay Briscoe is apparently under contract but also apparently can’t be used on TV. It would be really funny to book a Davey Richards or a Low Ki versus Chris Jericho match to see what would happen and I encourage that sort of lunacy, but you can also see why AEW might not want to do that. Bandido’s a good pick but also maybe the only fitting pick if AEW’s looking at it that way.

(On AEW, Daniel Garica is teasing quitting Chris Jericho’s stable. Daniel Garcia also beat Bandido for the PWG title not that long ago. AEW is a place where everything that happens anywhere may count, so maybe that’s a subplot that comes up.)

I suppose no Big Lucha World this week. Big Lucha actually should do a watch-along of the match from the gym for fun. And maybe Bandido and Emi Sakura can exchange tips on how to build a cult internet following for your non-US boutique promotion.

There’s also an AAA taping lineup announced for Juarez in November. It’s further announced then usual, but it probably was building off the Juarez marathon show this weekend.

AAA TV (SUN) 11/20/2022 Gimnasio Municipal Josué Neri Santos, Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua
1) Aéreo, Cobarde, Microman vs Arez, Mini Abismo Negro, Rey Horus
2) Reina Dorada, Sexy Star, Sussy Love vs Flammer, La Hiedra, Maravilla
3) Jack Cartwheel & Willie Mack vs Bestia 666 & Mecha Wolf
4) Bandido, Hijo Del Vikingo, Octagón Jr. vs Flamita, Gringo Loco, Villano III Jr.
5) Pagano, Pentagón Jr., Psycho Clown vs Rey Escorpión, Sam Adonis, Taurus

Five matches is not six, the amount AAA needs to tape to get two weeks of TV out of a single taping. That meant something gets added or a dark match gets shown on tapings this year. It would be my pick just to do Octagon Jr/Villano III Jr. and let the other guys do a 2v2, so at least one of these singles feuds has a singles match. That doesn’t seem to be AAA’s preference.

Psycho and Adonis seem paired up past TripleMania. Gringo Loco may actually wrestle Hijo del Vikingo. AAA booked the same Carthweel/Mack vs Bestia/Mecha match back in Sinaloa in July. The sides in the opener are strange.

Hijo del Vikingo is pictured as champion – but it’s AAA, so that’s more likely to be whatever image they handly to use and not an indication of title match plans.

My guess is this airs December 3rd and 10th; it could end up being the last first run footage to air on Space this year. That’s just a guess, it’s hard to know for sure this far out.

Bandido wins Big Lucha title, Panthers/Panteritas, AAA notes

The Panthers/Panterata was great and greatly laid. Blue Panther is a fan cheer machine but also smart enough to know the point should be to get over Panterita Jr. (and Dark Panther) and they laid out the match to make the younger guys the stars in the end. Dark Panther didn’t really connect on his tope over the barricade but it still kind of worked. CMLL seems committed to doing making Panterita Jr. a top guy and I hope it works.

The attendance was nowhere near last week, not that anyone should’ve expected that. It seemed a little bit up from the usual Friday night. The CMLL iPPVs, for about a year, start off with a segment where the TV announcers in the ring and talking about the big matches on the show to hype the top matches (and probably actually let them know what’s on the show for the people who speak Spanish but don’t really follow the promotion.) Octagon’s name got a noticeable big reaction when he was brought up in that segment. He weirdly didn’t seem as over in the actual match, which was about exactly what you’d expect with the people involved. The Atlantis/Fuerza feud was completely dropped to go back to Fuerza/Octagon. There were no challenges after and no indication if these guys were in for one night or more often.

The rest of the show was generally good if not particularly substantial. Both Pierrothito & Suicida got winning pinfalls before their fan-driven title shots next week, which is more care to booking than usual. Euforia did take the loss in the main event.

CMLL did not mention Starman on the show. Arena Neza did have a moment for him.I’m not sure if I should read into it any more than “CMLL didn’t consider him on the roster like Razie or important enough to mention”, but it felt strange. Between Starman, Raziel, Toro Bill Jr. and Guerrero Espacial, there’s been a run of 40-50 year old CMLL adjacent luchadors who’ve passed away in the last five months.

The Gladiatores mentioned Starman’s real name is Othoniel Trejo.

1) Cholo & Príncipe Odín Jr. b Bengala & Neón
2) Cachorro, Leono, Valiente Jr. DQ Disturbio, El Consejo, Raider
Consejo is Nitro reprising a short lived gimmick from five years ago. The live results still called him Nitro when he got the win.
3) Cancerbero, Luciferno, Virus b Audaz, Diamond, Halcón Suriano Jr.
Rudos took 1/3
4) El Coyote, Felino, Hijo del Villano III b Dulce Gardenia, Espíritu Negro, Rey Cometa
Rudos took 1/3.
5) Ángel de Oro, Niebla Roja, Terrible b Gemelo Diablo I, Gemelo Diablo II, Sagrado
Los Ingobernables took 1/3.

Wins and losses don’t matter much in CMLL but Los Malditos losing to every other top trio seems like a reason they shouldn’t be trios champions. They do seem like someone’s pet project and maybe that’ll win the day.

We are still guessing about what the Consejo thing as we were did five years ago. I feel good about the guess (“copyright reasons”) but CMLL didn’t give a reason this time around either.

Puebla has Mistico vs Atlantis Jr. scheduled, though I’m not sure i that’s the match happening given the next change:

CMLL (TUE) 09/27/2022 Arena México

2) Angelito, Kaligua, Shockercito vs Full Metal, Pequeño Olímpico, Pequeño Polvora

5) Star Jr., Stuka Jr., Volador Jr. vs Ángel de Oro, Gran Guerrero, Último Guerrero
Angel de Oro replaced Stuka on Tuesday

An unexpected day of the week for an Atlantis/Stuka rematch. Or it would’ve been, but Atlantis Jr. got pulled from this show Monday morning. Guerreros and Volador aren’t working a lot of Tuesdays, but they’ve got to pick up a match somewhere since they didn’t make the night of champions show.

Would you like to watch a video of Mexico City police working an Arena Mexico show accompanied by dramatic music for no reason?

AAA

AAA TV this week was the first of the two Hard Rock shows. It kind of felt like the 2021 TV shows, the amount of resort footage was reminiscent of the luchadors visiting various cultural and historical sites last year. The opener, Arez & Aramis vs Komander & Latigo, was a spectacular match. Not everything worked right but the stuff they did was impressive. The other two matches were the usual house show level matches more the norm on these resort shows.

There were two storyline vignettes on this show. Las Toxicas confronted Taya and demanded she stop defending it against foreigners and defend it against Flammer, so the title stays in AAA. Taya pointed out she doesn’t make the matches. This didn’t seem to satisfy Las Toxicas, who attacked Taya after her match. Another video had a Laredo Kid & Aramis discussion interrupted by Johnny Caballero, who told Aramis he should be listening to him instead since Johnny has all the WWE success (and the AAA Megachampionship) and Laredo does not. Johnny is also carrying around a stickhorse named Lorenzo de Llamas, a fun joke that makes it hard to take him seriously when he talks about his achievements. Caballero claims he’s starting a group. Like all AAA, wait and see if it goes anywhere.

AAA playing Psycho Clown’s music for Pagano and not bothering to fix it later was a great example of the effort level put into these TV shows. There was a moment in the opener tag where all four guys were frozen after something went wrong, and they kinda figured it out. It was a moment to edit out if anything is ever going to be edited, and it was not edited out. So it goes.

Space did run an advertisement saying they’re airing TripleMania but didn’t list a start time. My impression from the press conference is the show starts at 7 live (and on FITE) and Space picks it up around 8, but I know other people were confused. AAA might make this clearer closer to the show.

A few more TripleMania thoughts with a weekend to think about it

  • It’s every TripleMania card for the last decade, no better or worse. It should go well. They’ll be all sorts of angles and surprises in the opening matches to make them seem less pointless. One of them will be great. You can also really just tune in for the last three or four matches and see all you need to see. I wish the formula got shaken up but I also can see why they don’t feel like they need to do that.
  • Plenty of fans seemed frustrated there was no FTR appearance (or, to a lesser extent, no Sammy/Taya one.) Like I said before, it doesn’t serve AAA’s purposes to explain why they couldn’t get their tag team champions to appear on a date they should’ve had booked for six months; no one cares the reason why. It would be good to say when they’re going to bring them in. That would assume AAA has a date and who knows.
  • Kamille from the “NWA” probably doesn’t mean anything to almost all Mexican fans; the Billy Corgan era of the NWA has had no obvious reach in Mexico outside of super invested fans who pay attention to everything. It’s possible you could count on two hands the number of people in Mexico who watched the previous NWA match between Taya & Kamille. Kamille, “tall striking human being”, probably does mean something to Mexican fans and it was a good idea to bring her to the press conference to get that size over.
    • I believe doing AAA doing a copromotion with NWA means almost nothing as far as additional international attention. There definitely will be NWA fans who buy the TripleMania show, but I believe most people who pay for the NWA are the level of fans willing to buy pretty much any ‘major’ wrestling show and the TripleMania Mexico City already fits as a major wrestling show. FITE probably has the numbers to find this out better than I do though.
  • Argenis posted a photo from the Arena Mexico stage on Friday. It’s the usual “look, I might show up in another promotion” social media post that luchadors do whenever they’re unhappy about something. They never actually act on it. Mistico might be able to get his brother back in CMLL but it doesn’t seem like that’s actually the plan. Argenis is likely disappointed about not being on the TripleMania card. AAA’s strategy of bookings TripleMania shows so as many wrestlers as possible get booked still leaves a bunch of people unhappy. I vote for less people involved and more meaningful matches but I’m not the person who has to deal with angry wrestlers.

AAA ran their latest Showcenter event on Sunday. Posting the results more out of habit than usefulness. These aren’t being taped and the tournament long stopped making sense.

AAA (SUN) 09/25/2022 Showcenter Complex, San Pedro Garza García, Nuevo Leon
1) Mamba b Baby LoveViva Van
Baby Love and Mamba replaced Goya Kong
2) Aramis b Baby ExtremeDulce Kanela
Scheduled as a tag match, Mamba was moved to the next match.
3) Puma King & Toscano b Murder Clown & Panic Clown
Toscano (replacing Carta Brava) beat Panic Clown (surprise partner)
4) Toxin b Antifaz [Showcenter Tournament]
money thrown in
5) Aerostar, Octagón Jr., Vampiro b Dinámico, Rey Escorpión, Taurus
Octagon Jr. (return from injury) replaced Drago. Dinamico replaced Villano III Jr.

They went 1 out of 5 announced matches, even switching around a match where they had everyone there. I don’t know why they announce lineups. Toxin vs. Antifaz was the only match that stayed as it was announced. Neither of those two people was in the tournament bracket when it was originally announced.

AAA’s been pretty consistent on announcing the next show date during the event every month, and the plan was for a show every month. The next show would be 10/30 by the usual pattern and I’m sure they’re still running there. WWE’s Monterrey show is on 10/29, so maybe that’s the issue.

Vampiro did a lot of press to highlight his appearance on this show. In Posta, Vampiro said he’s in his late steps as a luchador but will keep working in the AAA office. I don’t know that it’s public that he’s been working back in the AAA office. Vampiro also has a full array of projects outside of wrestling as always. He says his Alzheimer’s condition is stage 4 but he wants to live his life to the fullest as long as he can.

Bandido beat Flamita to become the first champion. Flamita gave him credit but said he still wanted the mask match. Yutani confronted Bandido post match.

I’ve watched everything but the fourth match from this show. Mas Lucha’s initial airing had the video dropping out from time to time; it seems better in the individual match uploads they’ve put up.

Bandido/Flamita looked like it might get derailed early due to a Flamita foot/ankle injury. They killed some time by throwing each other into chairs and Flamtia seemed to be more comfortable once they got going again. They then really got going, an intense clean title match that went back and forth and had a very vocal crowd involved. It was everything you’d want out of the first title match in the promotion. I’m sure it comes off as as questionable to have Bandido the champion of the Bandido wrestling federation to people who don’t follow the group, but it came off as the right decision in watching the show.

Demon, Wagner, Skayde was not good at all. Everyone looked slow and old and the crowd wasn’t into it. The wrestlers, especially Wagner, seemed unhappy with how it went. The women’s match was fine. It was a novelty to me to see Hiedra & Shani in just a normal match instead of fighting guys or doing hardcore or a multiperson situation.

The Copa went very long, had some good moments, had Cometa Maya crashing and burning badly on a dive. I’m starting to really like Forneo based on his work here and in the recent tournament. Galeno del Mal had a great stretch of looking like a monster. Yutani was a good pick for a winner and first challenger. It was clear Big Lucha hadn’t given the announcers a list of participants. No one knew who “Juby” was and I’m still not sure.

The opener was the usual good effort match with a few moments that could’ve gone better. I’m not sure if there’s a different method of preparation going on but X-Devil and Sol look a lot steadier in Big Lucha than they do in other groups.

Big Lucha is the “It” indie promotion in Mexico right now, which has benefits and downsides. It is clear other groups are trying to work with Big Lucha in hopes of using that bit of attention to help themselves. Everything after the 5v5 seemed to be angles just to get over matches for KAOZ wrestling, a promotion that does not run shows. (The Tiger, in a post show interview, made it clearer that he wanted Emperador Azteca’s mask but back in Monterrey for KAOZ.) I suspect KAOZ paid for this all to happen but it felt like an intrusion on a Big Lucha event. The Big Lucha people are going to get a lot of offers for co-promotion as long as they stay the “It” group and they can afford to be choosier about them.

Big Lucha did not give a next show date, or a date of when that Bandido/Yutani match is happening if those are two different shows.

This show was said to be not very good.

Remember how the IWRG tag team title situation was going to get resolved on Sunday in GALLI? Jessy Ventura didn’t make the show due to flight issues. They did run the tag title match anyway, with Joey Marx and Mason Conrad winning the tag titles. I have no idea if that means they’re coming to Naucalpan or if they’re just the newest team to hold the titles around Chicago until a Mexican team can come in.

IWRG announced they’ll decide a new IWRG women’s champion on their 12/16 anniversary show. Amapola was the most recent champion, winning the belt in 2005 and last known to defend it in 2007. That was when CMLL and IWRG were working together, they haven’t for many years now. IWRG also hasn’t been much interested in a women’s division for most of those 15 years, just occasional matches. They’ve made more effort in the last few years, though it’s still pretty inconsistent. At any rate, they’re making a new belt and will decide a new champion on that year end show.

Caballero del Plata did donate his lost hair to a charity.

Nacion Lucha Libre

Their first taping did place on Saturday. There’s not too much written about it; the usual sites aren’t going to cover a show where they can’t take video. I could find scattered video but not really results.  Attendance looked decent if carefully arranged to look bigger on TV. It reads like a lot of tickets were given out for free for anyone who wanted them, so I’m not sure the attendance should be considered significant of anything. Nacion’s gameplan seems to make their money on TV, especially international TV, so a taping with lots of people is more important to them if they paid. Giving away free tickets across the street from Arena Naucalpan sure doesn’t help IWRG but I don’t think that’s a Nacion concern.

The main heel group appeared to be some combination of the Colons, Super Beast, and Travis Banks. Alberto sees himself as someone wrongly accused and so it’s unsurprising Banks could convince him they’re the same.

There didn’t seem to be an announcement about when this taping would air; the original idea was October and that’s getting close. (Nacion did film other footage for TV a week back so I believe it’s actually airing, just that they and TV network Imagen haven’t gotten around to promoting it.) There also didn’t seem to be a push for the next taping.

Other

Sniper took Black Fish’s mask in a cage match in Guadalajara. This doesn’t appear to be the Black Fish who was Fishman Jr. for some time. This Black Fish is Juan Manuel Morales.

Lucha Libre CM was to open their own arena in Ecatepec on Sunday with a show. The show didn’t happen; the local government declared they couldn’t run the building. The promotion insisted they had everything taken care of and would run the show that day somehow. It doesn’t appear they were able to run in the end.

The Juarez marathon lucha libre event was said to draw 8,000 people. I believe that was a free admission show.

6) Alpha Wolf & Dragón Bane vs Aramis & Toxin
7) Galeno del Mal & Hijo del Dr. Wagner Jr. vs Centvrión & Metaleón

This is the “only good matches” show and I guess every match could be a good match if it works out. I don’t feel confident about six straight good matches. You also probably shouldn’t put Mexican wrestling trainees on a show where the idea is just good matches but maybe that’s part of the deal to get the building.

Metaleon is now Leon Dorado Jr. everywhere but here, because here they were going to do a Centvrion/Metaleon mask match at some point and it just hasn’t happened. It’s by no means hot after the promotion hasn’t run all year, but it’s also overdue for Mexawrestling to either announce when they’re going to run the match or to try focus on something new. I don’t know if Mexa Wrestling really is meant to be anything beyond this one show but it feels like they’re stuck in a dated moment.

10/08 Riot (Nuesta Raza, Nueva Lucha)

That could be a really good trios match.

Starman (1974-2022), TripleMania CDMX lineup announced, Big Lucha title decided tonight

CMLL

Starman (47) has passed away. No cause of death is mentioned. His two biggest wins were a mask win over Fiero in 1997 and over Hijo del Signo in 2017.

Starman started as “Ultraman Jr.”, the second generation of a luchador from the 70s modeled after the Japanese character of the same name. He first popped up in CMLL in 1994 and appears to have been full-time by 1996. He had a falling out with the original Ultraman in 1998 and switched his look very slightly for the Starman character. (He also went to Japan to lose the Ultraman Jr. mask, which wasn’t acknowledged in Mexico; Mr. Cacao complimented that match today.) Starman was a preliminary fixture for the next two decades, a reliable if not flashy wrestler and part of a generation of wrestlers who struggled to move up on the cards. He’s a guy everyone who watched would remember even if they wouldn’t have a specific match in mind.

Starman started to break down physically in 2016, leading to long absences and short returns, and it usually seemed to be knee issues. He didn’t wrestle at all in 2019. Starman’s final match with CMLL was in August 2021; he hadn’t appeared in a match since January and he still got hurt. I’m uncertain if he was Starman was still on paper as part of CMLL’s roster at this point but he’s a been around long enough and recent enough that it surely feels like they lost a roster member.

Starman was young enough that more rest and one short return to lose his mask seemed reasonable. There was a moment where we all thought that was already going to happen: the Signo mask win came in at the end of a cage match, and Starman would’ve been favored to lose at that moment. He also would’ve been favored to lose after, with midcard winners of an apuesta match tending to lose another one soon after. (See: Isis beating Vaquerita before losing her own mask to Jarochita.) Maybe the injuries just derailed that last big match from happening. It still seemed like he was hoping it could still take place last we heard from him.

Starman was also running Gimnasio Starman, a gym that also ran some wrestling shows. He didn’t wrestle on the most recent show in August. Straman also trained wrestlers at the gym.

CMLL will likely remember Starman on tonight’s show.

This was a free Dia de Luchador show; attendance was everyone they had space for.

Rayman and Gallo have their mask match a week from Saturday. Mas Lucha announced they’ll stream that one live. Those are two big local names and that match should for sure feel like a big deal. It’s an indie match that may be 1/4th brawling and interference but it’ll have a strong chance to be something worth watching. Shows in Arena GDL are usually a 8 pm start so figure the main event to happen around 10.

The Friday after the Aniversario is usually just rematches and not much more. There is a bit more with today’s lineup. Octagon and Hijo de Octagon to make Fuerza Guerrera’s life (more) miserable. The real draw to me is a father/son match with Blue Panther & Dark Panther against Panterita del Ring & Panterita del Ring Jr. The younger Panterita getting a spotlight chance is a possibility for great things, Dark Panther is fun when given something to do, and the fathers have had good chemistry in the past. In total truth, it’s probably a “make sure to check it out when it turns up on YouTube” show and not “you’ve got buy it and see it live” card, but I buy everything and maybe you to do. This is the link to the iPPV if you’re that weird.

CMLL (SUN) 09/25/2022 Arena México

4) Dulce Gardenia, Espíritu Negro, Rey Cometa vs El Coyote, Felino, Hijo del Villano III
5) Ángel de Oro, Niebla Roja, Terrible vs Gemelo Diablo I, Gemelo Diablo II, Sagrado

“El Consejo” in the second match sticks out. Nitro previously used this name in 2017, spending a late July weekend as a tecnico. The poster indicates it’s meant to be Nitro again. CMLL didn’t really explain what was going on, but it was thought this was just something strange CMLL was doing to make sure they owned the name (and AAA or someone else couldn’t use a wrestler over that name.) Maybe they needed to renew it after five years.

CMLL (TUE) 09/27/2022 Arena Coliseo Guadalajara
1) Logan, Luminoso, Quka vs Gran Kenut, Jabalí, Minotauro
2) El Divino, Hijo del Solar, Mágico vs Cris Skin, Mr. Trueno, Rey Trueno
3) Adrenalina, Explosivo, Fantástico vs Akuma, Dark Magic, Espanto Jr.
4) Hombre Bala, Robin, Suicida vs Omar Brunetti, Principe Daniel, Vaquero Jr.
5) Diamond, Magia Blanca, Magnus, Rugido vs Bestia Negra, Dragón Rojo Jr., Joker, Misterioso Jr.
6) Blue Panther, Fuerza Guerrera, Solar I vs Atlantis, Black Warrior, Satánico

A legends main event with Black Warrior returning. Hijo del Solar doesn’t seem to wrestle outside of shows where his father wrestlers.

I plan on putting the CMLL Aniversario show on the Google Drive on Saturday. The timing may be a little bit funky because I prefer to wait for it the CMLL Televisa show to air and that overlaps a bit with AAA this week, but it’ll be there sometime Saturday night. My Twitter bit of donating money to get the show still stands today but you can also just wait a day. Someone must’ve pirated a copy by now because there are definitely people who’ve seen the show who I don’t think I’ve sent a link, so that option exists as well.

CMLL announced the night of champions lineup on Wednesday. The matches were as I expected on Wednesday. Magia Blanca & Volador didn’t get enough late votes to go ahead of Dulce Gardenia & Espiritu Negro. They did get enough late votes to swap places with the women’s tag team match on the card. (The men are now 4th, the women 3rd.)

The 09/23 CMLL/Ice Ribbon show (scheduled to be part of a Mexican festival in Tokyo) has been moved to 09/25 at Ice Ribbon’s gym due to an incoming typhoon. That show has the Dalys vs Tae Honma match for the CMLL Japan Women’s championship. Stephanie Vaquer challenges for an Ice Ribbon title on their show on 09/24.

CMLL’s sponsoring a 5/10 KM race on 10/08. Valiente appeared at a press event to promote this and indicated he’d be returning to the ring soon.

6) Cibernético vs Pagano [hair]
7) Fénix vs Hijo Del Vikingo [AAA MEGA]
8) Pentagón Jr. vs Villano IV [mask]

This show will air in English and Spanish on FITE. The FITE feed is listed at 7 pm. Dorian Roldan says the show will start airing at 8pm; I assume that’s the FITE version, with the first couple of matches being held over to air the next week as we’ve seen on previous shows.

The two announced matches (Pentagon/Villano, Ciber/Pagano) were skipped over, focusing on the six ones that still needed to be completed. AAA showed a poll saying 32% of the respondents wanted Fenix, 24% of Kenny Omega, 15% Bandido and 29% others. The numbers may be a work and the numbers may have always been planned to be a work depending on who was available, but it’s a less believable work with Bandido in the results and Juventud Guerrera not in there. Guerrera’s campaign to get people to vote for him was very clearly working.

(I also totally screwed up, yet again. I had been told Juventud Guerrera wanted to interference in the press conference as a stunt and he had made some indication on his own social media he was going to do something. When the press conference stopped and everyone stopped to react to something off camera, then Fenix joked about that being Juventud Guerrera adding himself to the match, I thought that really was Juventud Guerrera adding himself to the match. It turns out it was just some random music practice they could hear and I could not, and Juventud Guerrera had nothing to do with it.)

Fenix versus Hijo del Vikingo will be outstanding. I think it’s the right match no matter how they got there. This whole poll bit still seems like a way for AAA to get out of the Omega/Vikingo match if it couldn’t happen, but I’m not sure it met that goal. Mexican fans hoping for a big AEW or outside name to be added to the show were probably left disappointed by no Omega, no FTR and no Sammy/Tay. There are surely reasons for all of them and AAA will once again spell them out in podcasts and newsletters, but those fans are still going to be disappointed. For those fans who spent the last year imagining some big cross over with AEW, this lineup will leave them disappointed.

Dorian put a lot of hype on Kamille/Taya match, saying it might be one of the best women’s matches anywhere and expected a lot of international attention. It kind of came off as a defense as why AAA was doing that match instead of the Flammer/Taya one, though Flammer was not mentioned. Dorian also brought up a 19,000 attendance figure and explained to Kamille this was the biggest show in lucha libre. I don’t know that CMLL is even on Dorian Roldan’s radar in 2022 so it might have been unintentional but, for the people who do pay attention to both groups, the moment came off like him stating Kamille/Taya was going to beat Jarochita/Isis. That’s a tall task.

(Flammer isn’t listed on the card but I suspect she’s working as one of the Marvel characters.)

The other matches is the usual TripleMania bit of trying to cram everyone on the card and people being a little short-changed on oppurtinties. Psycho Clown being used a three way trios match on TripleMania Mexico City feels like something fell through, it’s such an underutilization. NGD did interviews happily talking about how they were going to get to wrestler foreginers on this show and I wonder if they knew they were going to face the same three foreigners who are on this show all the time.

The fourway tag match should be great. It was also undercut by Dragon Lee & Dralistico correctly pointing out it shouldn’t be happening, they should be facing FTR already. Everyone’s going to work to create drama to believe anything other than a Dragon Lee & Dralistico victory is happening. I think I would’ve put Flip in the fourway tag and Willie in the battle royal, but AAA must think they need Willie’s charisma to liven it up.

I like Flip more than most in AAA, I’m sure he’ll do something fun, it is absolutely confusing that a promotion that says it doesn’t have enough resources to do what they want is bringing in Flip Gordon to work a battle royal. I’m sure there’s a reason I do not understand, because on the outside it seems like AAA could just put Parka Negra or Argenis or Dave the Clown in the spot for the same difference. Flip doesn’t any sort of a draw at this point – he’s a guy who’s so slipped off the radar that people are surprised he’s still around when he turns up. Relationships are everything in wrestling, I guess. I have none and that’s why I’m doing a blog instead of something meaningful.

Roldan pushed the Marvel Lucha Libre concept strongly. It hasn’t been on TV since April and, if you search around Amazon reviews, it seems like a concept the Marvel fans never really got into and have already moved on from. AAA must be getting a different indication because they’re talking about this match (participants based on graphics, may not be the actual list) as the start of a title situation that’ll peak in a big show in Acapulco. A standalone Marvel Lucha Libre show still seems on the books. It seems weird but it’s great business for AAA if Disney/Marvel is still into it.

AAA’s switched around the people wrestling under the Marvel Lucha Libre characters many times. Taurus as Venenoide has been one of the few constants; perhaps he’s got a big role on this show and that’s why he’s not doing much elsewhere. (The downside of AAA having so much talent is you always feel like someone’s not getting to use all of theirs.) Arcano has most often been Hijo del Vikingo and he actually did that gimmick the last time he defended the Mega title on screen, so I guess he might do it again. Picdura Letal was Sexy Star originally. The other names have changed multiple times.

TripleMania felt like it was missing something at the press conference but, again, they didn’t talk about Penta/Villano, they didn’t talk about Ciber/Pagano. I’m confident those and the Mega title match to feel like TripleMania matches. Everything else is the usual everything else on a recent TripleMania card. It’ll be good.

AAA TV on Space this week is from the Hard Rock Hotel Rivera. No idea what matches. Space is listing the show about 45 minutes early this week, at “5:43 pm”.  I’ll stream it on Twitch if the feed plays OK and it’ll stay up there if you forget the starting time.

AAA also has a Showcenter event on Sunday. There are only five matches announced; most shows have had six or seven. Not sure if something is going to be added with Octagon Jr. They’ve consistently announced the next date and lineup during these shows and there’s a hint something may be coming with the tournament on that date.

Hijo del Vikingo

Hijo del Vikingo, in an interview with Heraldo de Puebla, says he is expecting to hear about his US visa in October. I’ve been told that he and the others in the long stuck Masked Republic group were told they would be getting approved in October. It also apparently wasn’t RGR getting involved after all, even though RGR broke the news

That was not the only Hijo del Vikingo news of the day. Hijo del Vikingo posted a photo of himself with a baby Wednesday night. This photo so angered Hades, the baby’s mother, that she wrote a lengthy post on Facebook talking about the circumstances of both the photo and her relationship. She specifically didn’t refer to Hijo del Vikingo by name, though she posted a photo of him sleeping near a crib from some other time. Everyone reading the post is meant to be already aware she’s talking about Vikingo. (“Hades” is the name the women used at the end of her AAA run and in her Instagram posts, her Facebook is still using her “Hahastary” indie name. I’m using Hades to make this consistent.)

Hades version of her and Vikingo’s history begins with him moving into her place when he was homeless. Hades says she and Vikingo’s previous girlfriend (who he also has a child with) had broken up, he needed a place to live, she let him live with her, and only then did they start a relationship. Hades says the relationship was positive at first – he asked her parents for permission to see their daughter, they took care of some his medical bills – but it reads as though they broke up at some point. Hades doesn’t seem to explain what happened, instead moving to them getting back together and the relationship becoming sour. Hades says Vikingo become misogynistic and egotistical, someone that isolated her from all her friends to get her to stay home and take care of him. Hades knew things were gong bad but convinced herself to stay for reasons she now feels silly. Hijo del Vikingo moved his sister into the place where he and Hades were leaving, and then moved another woman. Hades only later realized Vikingo had started a relationship with that woman; those two are now a couple. Hades eventually took her baby and left that place, and said she has not seen Vikingo for six months before that photo. Vikingo has been getting negative posts on social media following Hades talking about their relationship last month. Hades believed Vikingo met with her just so he could take that photo for Instagram as a response to social media hate and said he only spent five minutes with them.

Vikingo responded on Friday, posting a receipt of a bank transfer from about a week ago. He wrote that he wants to keep his private life private, but the social media comments about his post relationship were starting to affect his personal and professional life. Vikingo hopes the receipt was proof that he was taking care of his two children; Vikingo said he sent them money every two weeks and other times when necessary. He seemed to confirm he did only spend five minutes with Hades and their baby, though he said that was more due to issues with not wanting to be around Hades, who he feels has lied to him and misrepresented him. Vikingo suggests it was a toxic relationship with no solution and he had to get out to rebuild his life. Vikingo ends by apologizing for exposing his private lives to the fans, who he feels shouldn’t have to deal with it. Hades has responded with more Facebook posts that vaguely hint at the situation.

I can’t tell you what to believe, but I believe parts of Hades or Vikingo’s stories and not others. Hades’ story that she only got together with Vikingo after he broke up with the previous woman is suspicious; the previous woman loudly indicated otherwise at the time. I’m also not sure if “2 babies” is the true total of Vikingo kids; there are other women on Instagram who suggest the total could be 3 or 4. There are other discrepancies. It’s not worth breaking down every word they’ve said: it’s a messy situation and one where the truth can’t and shouldn’t be determined through emotional social media posts.

Vikingo’s the one wrestling right so he seems more relevant. He seems like he’s made some very poor choices. I don’t think they rise to “canceling” him. Vikingo wouldn’t be the first terrible spouse or absentee father who went onto US wrestling stardom – but it’s fair and understandable if the story changes anyone’s feelings towards him. I like watching Hijo del Vikingo matches but I’d want to know there’s not going to be more or worse revelations to come out if I was someone who ran a wrestling company and wanted to sign him and invest in him long term. On the other hand, Vikingo seems like a guy who could use a contract with a US company to pay for all the promises he’s made.

I still haven’t put anything about this on Twitter because I found it too complicated for 280 characters, and that was before Vikingo posted today. I don’t know that posting scandalous stuff on Twitter actually accomplishes much in Mexican wrestling beyond dramatic quote tweets – all the energy on Travis Banks only meant he’s not working Big Lucha, but he’s working every other indie fine at the moment. Ineffective drama is just annoying.

These Mas Lucha shows have all drawn pretty well. This one bombed; it was the turnout of a poor normal Thursday night show. I don’t think this lineup was all that worse than the last few but it definitely didn’t work out. Maybe the timing wasn’t great coming off the big shows in this building and in general around Mexico City this week. It would give me pause if I was running CMLL and thinking about doing this Mesias/Ultimo Guerero feud; no one cared.

The first four matches all aired for free. That’s cool as a viewer but I think Mas Lucha is probably hurting themselves by giving away so much stuff. They need to be meaner.

This week’s IWRG Retro

  • 2005-03-03 Universo 2000, Black Terry, Scorpio Jr. vs Blue Panther, Blue Demon Jr., Mascara Sagrada
  • 2001-07-12 Kato Kung Lee, Super Astro, Pantera vs Hijo del Diablo, Dr. Cerbero, Nosawa
  • 2000-06-15 Felino, Black Dragon, Suicida vs Maniac Cop, Super Mega, Mega

Again, these are all matches known to exist on tape lists but weren’t available online. It’s relevant in that the hope is IWRG has access to this big library of matches of unseen material, but the reality might be IWRG mostly might be working off those same tapes that got passed around long ago. Either way, most people haven’t seen this stuff since it airs or ever, so I hope they keep posting it.

IWRG (SUN) 09/25/2022 Arena Naucalpan
1) Súper Boy vs Kenji
2) Baby Star & Jhon Tito vs Feroz & Rey Aztaroth
3) Noisy Boy, Paymon, Spider Fly vs Limbo, Nishikawa, Rey Halcón
4) Hijo del Alebrije, Luka, Relámpago vs Garra Mortal, Maniacop, Yorvak
5) Hell Boy, Oficial 911, Oficial Fierro vs Caballero de Plata, Cerebro Negro, Cerebro Negro Jr.
6) Abismo Negro Jr., Aster Boy, Tonalli vs Dick Angelo 3G, Legendario, Puma de Oro

Abismo Negro back to be part of this Jacuan feud. Hell Boy is an Oficial for the night. AK-47 must actually be hurt because he’s not around to continue the feud.

A recap of the IWRG Tag Team Championship

  • Aramis & Imposible are champions, titles are vacated because Imposible became Fuerza Guerrera NG
  • Chicago wrestlers Bryce Benjamin & Marshe Rockett come in for a tournament, win the vacant tag titles
  • a pandemic happens! Benjamin and Rockett can’t return to Mexico for a long period
  • Benjamin & Rockett defend the titles in Chicago once but they’re mostly forgotten about
  • IWRG holds a #1 contenders tournament, with the idea that the winners might go to the US to win the tag titles to bring them back
  • Demonio Infernal & Fresero Jr. win the tag team tournament
  • Demonio Infernal & Fresero Jr. quit IWRG
  • 16 months later, Atomico Jr. & Golden Dragon win the tag team titles from Benjamin & Rockett on a GALLI show, with the idea either they’ll go to Mexico or someone will come to Chicago to win the belts.
  • Golden Dragon and maybe Atomico Jr. quit GALLI
  • this week IWRG announces Diva Salvaje & Jessy Ventura’s visit to GALLI this Sunday will include a decision match for the vacant IWRG tag team titles. The belts should finally go back to Mexico after three years.
  • Fuerza Guerrera NG is Imposible again.

Looking at that, we all understand something will go wrong and the belts will still be in Chicago after this week. But, while we’re at this, it appears GALLI has shifted video providers again and are now going to be streaming on IWTV.

Mas Lucha announced their field for the 10/06 Torneo Supremo

  • Aeroboy
  • Charly Manson
  • Dragon Lee
  • Jack Evans
  • Komander
  • Puma King
  • Shun Skywalker
  • Tonalli

I watched last year’s Torneo Supremo and was unsatisfied by the quality of matches and turned off by the overbooking. It’s a big reason I haven’t gone back to subscribe since, it felt like shows that just weren’t meant for my tastes. I may get suckered in again by that lineup – there are some really good names in there and also strangely Charly Manson??? – and I’ll have only myself to blame if it turns out the same way.

Big Lucha

Big Lucha runs tonight in Bandido’s Gym with Alas de la Independencia. The show will stream on Mas Lucha. The poster says a 6:30 pm start, but they’re actually starting at “8:30” as normal.

Big Lucha’s first anniversary was a few shows back, but this feels like the true end of Season 1 for the promotion. The main feud for this promotion has been Bandido versus Flamita and they’re meeting in the main event for the promotion’s new singles title. I keep thinking about how Big Lucha ought to do something to move onto a new direction after getting into a rut on the Big Lucha/Black Generation feud that I think I’m overlooking the obvious stuff. This is the first time Bandido and Flamita have wrestled in a singles match in Big Lucha, the first time they’ve wreslted in a singles match since Flamita became Demonic Flamita. It should be an outstanding match in a month already with plenty of outstanding matches. Whatever happens (or doesn’t happen) next can wait until after they have their match.

The rest of the card has the usual mix of young in-house talent and reoccurring ousiders. Skayde vs Blue Demon vs Dr. Wagner meet in a three way. A 5v5 pits teams of Mexico versus the Rest of the World, and there’s an early scramble that could similarly produce some cool spots. Ex-WWE Catalina makes her Bandido’s Gym debut teaming with Sussy Love against AAA’s La Hiedra and Sexy Star and there’s an opening 3 team tag. The Big Lucha shows haven’t completely hit on every match yet. Maybe this will be that show.

They did an angle on Thursday’s Big Lucha show in Torreon where Black Generation beat up Bandido’s father. I think that means Bandido has to win tonight. Attendance in that building was much higher than the usual local Sunday shows there. That full show is up on Angel’s channel.

Mexico’s INJUVE (government sponsored youth insititue) announced “El Lance a la Victoria‘, a lucha libre talent search content, at a Dia de Lucha Libre press conference. The winner will receive a one year contract with Big Lucha, a Mexic City wrestling license or free renewal, and a 5000 pesos. Second place gets 3000 pesos the same wrestling license deal, third place just gets the free license. INJUVE worked with Bandido and friends on mask and vaccination awareness previously. I’m not exactly sure what a one year contract with Big Lucha means in practice; probably just a regular part of their roster.

People who want to participate need to be betwee 12-29, have trained in wrestling for one year and must live in Mexico City. There’s an audition on on September 28th to cut down to fourty wrestlers, who’ll be split amongst four trainers. They’ll have matches on Thursdays at Bandido’s Gym, with four judges rating the performances. That’ll be a further cut down to six finalists who will participate on a show on 10/27. I presume this will be additional Mas Lucha streams on Thursday nights but I’m not certain. The set up sounds broadly similar to what Mas Lucha has done with the IWRG Tryout series (and CMLL’s En Busca de un Idolo prior.)

There is also an associated lucha libre comic book drawing contest for people between 12-29 who live in Mexico City. More details can be found in a PDF on INJUVE’s website.

Nacion Lucha Libre

Nacion Lucha Libre begins “season 2” on Saturday. You can click here to see what they advertised as the lineup, but it’ll probably be different when it actually happens. Notably, Hijo del Dr. Wagner Jr. is listed in both Nacion Lucha Libre and in NOAH, so he’s not appearing in Nacion Lucha Libre. Alberto has done a lot of press for the show. I don’t feel any buzz for the show or any of the matches, but then that was obvious when they announced the matches. It is intended to be a TV product so maybe it’ll be a bigger deal when it airs; there’s still no exact date for the start. This is more interesting as a business story than a wrestling one at this point.

Other Notes

LuchaWorld has the latest Lucha Report.

Dayami is wrestling in Cincinnati, Ohio’s Ascend Pro Wrestling on Saturday. That’s a random booking. She apparently came to the US in August and will be around for six months.

10/08 Riot (Nuesta Raza, Nueva Lucha)

Negro Navarro will wrestle Tony Deppen on the 10/09 JCW show. That show airs for free on YouTube. I’m not sure what Tony Deppen did to deserve this challenge.

10/22 GCW in Detroit has Komander vs Shun Skywalker.

The 10/14 Vanguardia show will have Ciclope & Miedo Extremo vs Drew Parker & El Mago in an explosion match.

Psicosis II said he’s in discussion to start a wrestling school in Puebla in association with the local BUAP university.

San Luis Potosi handed out awards on Dia de Luchador, which isn’t the worst idea. The best local tencico was Bogar Jr., the best local rudo is Demencia Jr.,, and the best luchador was Luz Viva. Many more awards were given out.

10:21. Satanico used the ropes to pin the 2nd, UG did the same in the ring.

CMLL unexpectedly streamed this live on YouTube, without any country restriction. It’s still up there now. Marca also streamed it with the usual Mexico-only block. That seems to confirm the country restriction is a Marca choice and not a CMLL one. It appears this CMLL YouTube stream was a one off holiday Dia de Lucha special event and not a return to streaming more, though that’s all the chat was asking for.

It was a good show to air for free as a bonus. Los Diabolicos would do fine as undercard rudos for young tecnicos, as they’d done for pretty much their entire career. The semimain gave all sorts of fun match ups, including a brief Navarro/Volador exchange for the sickos. The main event more got by on nostalgia but it never got sad. It didn’t have the energy of the Aniversario (the crowd was only slightly larger than an average Tuesday) and the legends matches had a slow and less spectacular style than CMLL fans are used to, but they were solid matches. Everything else was standard non-Friday stuff.

Maybe Satanico was just having a bad day, but he looked significantly worse than his recent Arena Coliseo Guadalajara matches. He wasn’t moving well and he and UG kept the finishes simple. He didn’t hint any more about retirement but it definitely felt as if it was coming soon.

Mephisto looked to have a leg injury at the end of the main event but seemed to be fine in the post match interviews.

CMLL (FRI) 09/23/2022 Arena México
1) Angelito, Shockercito, Último Dragóncito vs Minos, Pequeño Olímpico, Pierrothito
2) Halcón Suriano Jr., Sangre Imperial, Suicida vs Akuma, Dark Magic, Espanto Jr.
3) Blue Panther & Dark Panther vs Panterita del Ring & Panterita del Ring Jr.
4) Atlantis, Hijo de Octagón, Octagón vs Ángel de Oro, Felino, Fuerza Guerrera
5) Dragón Rojo Jr., Místico, Stuka Jr. vs Euforia, Soberano Jr., Titán

Not the usual repeats of the Aniversario big matches – the women aren’t booked and only Stuka Jr. is there. The Dia de Luchadors card may have thrown off some of the usual patterns.

Octagon makes his first CMLL appearance since 2018. Octagon and Fuerza Guerrera spent the early part of the month calling each other liars and losers, and now they’re back doing matches again. Obviously that mask match would sell, obviously that mask match would be remarkably terrible, obviously that mask match isn’t going to happen, obviously they’re going to pretend it’s going to happen once again anyway. It does seem to signal the Atlantis/Fuerza story is coming to an end with Fuerza moving back to Octagon. I still do not believe CMLL will ever run Atlantis/Fuerza as a mask match; Octagon is likely correct when he talks about Fuerza Guerrera never really wanting to put up his mask. Fuerza says he’s retiring in the spring, so Octagon’s running out of chances to do this.

Hijo de Octagon is making his CMLL debut, though he has appeared in this building back with Lucha Libre Elite. He’s understood not to be one of Octagon’s actual children, though he and Octagon both fiercely insist otherwise.

The Panteritas versus the Panthers could be great.

CMLL (SAT) 09/24/2022 Arena Coliseo

4) Fugaz vs Dragón Rojo Jr.
5) Esfinge, Negro Casas, Star Jr. vs Atlantis Jr., Gran Guerrero, Último Guerrero

That was quick to the Fugaz/Dragon Rojo match. Atlantis Jr. is here, so he just has something going on Friday?

CMLL (MON) 09/26/2022 Arena Puebla
1) Centella Roja, Hijo de Centella Roja, Meyer vs Espíritu Maligno, Fuerza Chicana, King Jaguar
2) La Jarochita & Lluvia vs Olympia & Reyna Isis
3) Halcón Suriano Jr., Perverso, Rey Samuray vs Akuma, Dark Magic, Espanto Jr.
4) Magia Blanca, Magnus, Rugido, Volador Jr. vs Arkalis, Guerrero Maya Jr., Pegasso, Stigma
5) Místico vs Atlantis Jr.

Atlatnis appears to be a rudo everywhere but Guadalajara. But it never seems to stick. Perverso might be a tecnico now that he’s on the Fuerza Poblana reserve squad? I’m thinking too much about something that may not matter.

(No Sunday lineup yet.)

The official CMLL results for the Noche de Campoenes lineup will be announced on Wednesday, but the voting was so definite that I threw it into the database Tuesday night:

CMLL (FRI) 09/30/2022 Arena México
1) Pierrothito vs Mercurio [CMLL MINI]
2) Euforia, Hechicero, Mephisto vs Gemelo Diablo I, Gemelo Diablo II, Sagrado [CMLL TRIOS]
3) Dulce Gardenia & Espíritu Negro vs Ángel de Oro & Niebla Roja [CMLL TAG]
4) Amapola & Silueta vs La Jarochita & Reyna Isis [MEX WOMEN TAG]
5) Suicida vs Titán [CMLL WELTER]
6) Místico vs Rugido [NWA MIDDLE]

Soberano got close to Rugido in the last week, and the Rugido fans went crazy voting for him. It’s not even a contest going into (what we think are) the last few hours. The side-effect of this is that some of the people voting for Rugido appear to be lobbing a vote to Magia Blanca & Volador in the tag title race, and they’ve suddenly cut the lead in half. It’s not all the Rugido voters (or the Depredadores would be winning) and it may not be enough if the poll is closing to Informa. It has moved it from “lock” to “almost a lock.”

Everything else has been set for a while. Infernales, Espiritu & Dulce, and Pierrothito took the lead in their categories on day 1 and never went behind. Silueta & Ampola did so on day 2, Suicida by day 3. I don’t have a great story about why these are all so one sided.

Informa is scheduled for the big people from the Aniversario: Atlantis Jr. & Stuka, La Jarochita & Reyna Isis and Angel de Oro. They’ll probably also talk about the Night of Champions.

AAA

There is an additional taping before TripleMania

AAA TV (SUN) 10/02/2022 Auditorio Benito Juárez, Zapopan, Jalisco
1) Mini Vikingo, Mr. Iguana, Niño Hamburguesa vs Dinámico, Emperador Azteca, Toxin
2) Aramis, Arez, Komander vs Abismo Negro Jr., Flamita, Látigo
3) Dave The Clown, Murder Clown, Panic Clown vs Carta Brava Jr., Chessman, Puma King
4) Hijo Del Vikingo vs Laredo KidTaurus
5) Charly Manson, Heavy Metal, Zorro vs Cuatrero, Forastero, Sansón
6) Pagano, Psycho Clown, Sexy Star vs Chik Tormenta, Cibernético, Sam Adonis

One episode should air on 10/08. They’re probably not airing another episode on 10/15 but who knows. AAA tapings in Guadalajara are cursed historically. Let’s not talk about why they’re cursed, just bad things seem to happen often.

Sam Adonis is matched with Psycho Clown, who’s lacking much to do for TripleMania. Sexy Star is playing the role of Lady Shani on this show. Vikingo/Laredo/Taurus could be great, as could the second match. Mini Vikingo is said to be Hijo del Vikingo’s 15 year old nephew. He shows promise and can do some cool stuff but he’s very raw and it’s pretty aggressive to put him on TV at this point. At least he has good people to work with.

Octagon Jr. says he’s returning on Saturday’s Showcenter event. Murder Clown has a mystery person on that lineup, but that could be Panic Clown and Octagon Jr. could be replacing someone else.

Mamba, doing promotion for his own full-time return on September 25th, says his ankle injury didn’t heal as expected and doctor’s had to put fiberglass in. I don’t really understand that other than the general idea that injury recovery sucked.

It’s Wednesday. We’d probably hear about a press conference announcement by now if one was coming this week.

IWRG

Mas Lucha has their latest premium show on Thursday, with Ultimo Guerrero versus El Mesias as the main event of a 7 match card. It is a little surprising Mas Lucha gets to do this match if CMLL is planning on doing it soon; maybe they’re just not.

Mas Lucha also said they’ll announce the eight luchadors for this year’s Torneo Supremo on this show, noting it’ll be eight people who haven’t been in before.

Other

LuchaWorld has the latest Lucha Report and this week’s Poster-Mania.

The actual Dia de Lucha Libre y Dia de Luchador is today. CMLL put out a video celebrating their history (and pushing the 90th Anniversary, as they did last Friday.) There are free shows in Guadalajara (might be streamed) and San Luis Potosi today. SuperLuchas looks back at the first EMLL show and the forgotten work of Mexican sports writer Fray Nano in getting the promotion off the ground in the first few years.

Hijo del Vikingo and Pegasso were honored by Puebla’s Box y Lucha Libre commission today. Toro Bill Jr. & Guerrero Espacial were honored in memory after passing away in the last year. Wrestlers were also honored in Guadalajara.

Ninja Mack won a five-way in NOAH including Extreme Tiger, Dragon Bane, Alpha Wolf, and Alejandro earlier today. A Dragon Bane/Alpha Wolf match on 09/03 was said to be pretty good.

Impact has Black Taurus vs Laredo Kid vs Alex Zayne vs Trey Miguel vs Mia Yim on Thursday. When I read the taping results, I thought this was a #1 contenders match for the X-Division title and so it was very good to win. It now appears to be a preview match for a very similar match on Friday’s PPV and so it’s very bad to win by US wrestling logic.

Hijo del Dr. Wagner Jr. says his next goal in Japan is to win a singles title.

El Sol del Hidalgo talks to Night Bitch about her career.
