Mr. Niebla tribute show tonight in CMLL, Torneo Increible de Parejas announced, AAA/Azteca

Tonight is CMLL’s tribute to Mr. Niebla. The card looks decidedly blah, a normal winter card with a singles match to bide time until the next tournament comes up. (More on that in a bit.) The interviews with Niebla’s contemporaries suggest this may be more emotion than is presented in this lineup. It probably won’t have great matches but it could have nice moments.

The main event is an incredible partners match with Caristico, Cavernario and Valiente and Volador Jr., Ultimo Guerrero and Felino. It’s unpleasant to see the Pesta Negra partners on opposite sides for no reason on a show in honor of Mr. Niebla. Maybe they’ll make the best of it.

Mistico faces Gran Guerrero in the semi-main. They faced off Monday, which was a lot of playing to the crowd in a weaker version of the same match Mistico had with Mephisto a week prior. Mistico’s gotten positive reactions in both those singles matches, but it seems likely he’ll be booed loudly in front of Mr. Niebla supporters. This was a strange singles match to book for this show.

NGD face Angel de Oro, Niebla Roja, and Diamante Azul, a match I feel like I’ve seen almost for a week straight. Titan & Soberano are back home and are not big, so they’re demoted a match lower to team with Star Jr. against Shocker, Rey Bucanero and Terrible. Bucanero & Shocker plan to wear their old masks in tribute to Mr. Niebla. Olimpico will do the same, teaming with Tiger & Virus against Guerrero Maya, Drone and Fuego. Magia Blanca, battling reoccurring injury issues, makes his first Friday night appearance since October in the opener. He teams with Halcon Suriano Jr. against bicycle aficionados Akuma & Espanto Jr.

The show airs at 8:30 pm CT. I’m planning at being at the AAW show tonight, weather permitting. I will attempt to stream the show anyway because I’m a lunatic, but I may be slow to get it started or working if it falters. Next week will be the same thing but worse. Plan accordingly.

Shows built around honoring a wrestler have drawn well for CMLL in recent years. The Mr. Niebla show is no exception. Ticketmaster doesn’t give me a map, but it seems like most of the floor is down to single seats already.

Ovaciones writes “there’s a feud between Felino & Cavernario which could lead to an apuesta match.” I think he’s thinking of Angel de Oro. It’s weird.

Shocker talks about his friendship with Mr. Niebla.

CMLL announced the return of the Torneo Increible de Parejas yesterday on CMLL Informa. It is the usually sixteen team format over three weeks. The opening blocks are on 02/14 and 02/21. Bandido & Ultimo Guerrero are the first team announced. There’s a slight problem there, in that Ring of Honor has a show on 02/28. Bandido technically doesn’t have a match announced yet for that show but would be expected on it.

CMLL will hold matches at the La Mole comic book convention, from March 13-15 in Centro Banamex. That was the home of the Lucha Libre Expo many years ago.

Lucha Azteca (AAA) has been promoting an event today with big announcements, including new luchadors with familiar silhouettes. The website description makes it similar to rollout they did last year to introduce AAA to Azteca, including matches. They’re just no time listed for it, which is a bit unhelpful, Rush & La Bestia del Ring appear to have stopped taking bookings out of AAA, so it’s possible those guys signing are part of the big announcement. AAA hasn’t announced a date (or location!) for TripleMania, which would count as a big announcement.

Arez faces Blake Christian tonight on GCW’s show in Los Angeles. The show is available on FITE.

Cinta de Oro Jr., the one who’s not Sin Cara, did unmask on live TV in Ciudad Juarez last night. His name is Esteban Miranda, 24, 4 years a wrestler. He’s going to wrestle as Steven Juarez going forward.

LuchaTime put up the first episode of their show on YouTube in Spanish. There’s also English. The Spanish show doesn’t start until 2:26 minutes (just a still screen until then), which seems like death for a YouTube product. I haven’t watched it and I hadn’t heard anyone who did, but I may try to squeeze it in this weekend.

NFL Mexico sent a message of support from a famous Mexico City luchador to avowed wrestling fan George Kittle yesterday. Oddly, it was not Pentagon Jr., the guy Kittle is a big fan of. It was Mistico. NFL Mexico are fake lucha libre fans, I’m sad to say.

LuchaWorld has the latest Lucha Report, including a fibbing Ultimo Guerrero.

Okumura was honored in Osaka.

There will be a 5K/10Km race in Cuernavaca to honor wrestling legends in April.

Lineups

CMLL (MON) 01/27/2020 Arena Puebla
1) Millenium & Rey Samuray vs Black Tiger & Rey Apocalipsis
2) Marcela, Mystique, Sanely vs La Comandante, La Infernal, Reyna Isis
3) Stigma vs Kawato San [lightning]
4) Audaz, Dulce Gardenia, Flyer vs Shocker, Templario, Vangellys
5) Carístico, Soberano Jr., Titán vs Cuatrero, Forastero, Sansón

Stigma and Kawato was set up for about two weeks. The FantasticaMania crew is back (and again Volador/Valiente/Mistico are getting some time off.) This is about as few people on a CMLL show as I’ve seen; maybe they’ll add a match.

CMLL (TUE) 01/28/2020 Arena México
1) Acero & Aéreo vs Pequeño Olímpico & Pequeño Violencia
2) Avispa Dorada, La Guerrera, Princesa Sugehit vs Amapola, Metálica, Tiffany
3) Súper Astro Jr. vs El Coyote [lightning]
4) Diamond, Oro Jr., Pegasso vs Disturbio, Misterioso, Sagrado
5) Black Panther, Blue Panther, Blue Panther Jr. vs Hechicero, Rey Bucanero, Terrible
6) Atlantis Jr., Carístico, Soberano Jr. vs Cuatrero, Forastero, Sansón

Titan out, Atlantis in. Panthers are no longer facing Vangellys, so that was a fake feud. Coyote & Astro could be good.

  1. lol one of these days you’re gonna be at a live event, determined to ignore the stream and enjoy yourself and they’re gonna bring up the house lights and declare over the PA that it’s a wrestle emergency that you have to remote into your computer to fix crap
