great match roundup, week of 2019-06-15

Fenix

recaps

All 2019 round-up posts2019 MOTYC list

Six of these in one week is a lot. Seeing the light at the end of the catch-up tunnel is cool. Maybe I can go back and watch the BOSJ some time this summer.

Pretty easy choice for best match of this week. The random locals match in Cancun was almost better than anything on CMLL this week. A slight bit troubling. Also a bit troubling that the Cancun regular TV taping was better than Verano de Escandalo, but AAA big shows aren’t about having the best matches. I think we’ll be reminded about that Tuesday morning.

Nothing sounded like it was great except the fifth match, but MDA drew a huge crowd for this show.

Lucha Time (SUN) 06/30/2019 Gimnasio Nuevo León Independiente, Monterrey, Nuevo Leon [Lo Mejor de Lucha]

3) Carístico b Rey HorusBestia 666
4) Alberto el Patrón, Hijo del Fantasma, LA Park b Carlito, El Mesías, MVP

Very few details on this as well, though the photos show this drew much better than the last trip here, maybe better than The Crash show here a couple of years ago. The promotion says they raised 520,000 Mexican Pesos ($27K USD) for a charity helping vision-impaired adults and children.

Not much going into Arena Puebla tonight. CMLL set up a Volador/Sanson match and then just didn’t do a Volador/Sanson match. That’s fine. The main event is almost NGD versus Los Ingobernables, except Rush is replaced by Mr. Niebla. Mistico, Soberano, and Titan face the rest of Peste Negra in a match that seems good on paper. Dulce Gardenia debuts in Arena Puebla teaming with Drone and Stigma against Tyson la Besita, Universo 2000 Jr. and Virus. Sonic and Robin slip in amongst the locals; their team with Rey Samuray versus Espiritu Maligno, Joker and the returning Rey Apocalispis has an outside chance of being notable. The show streams at 9 pm.

Niebla Roja was booked to main event both Arena Coliseo Guadalajara & Arena Mexico tomorrow. He’ll be replaced by Caristico in Mexico City. My hunch is a Volador/Sanson match planned for tonight and perhaps a Volador/Gran Guerrero match for tomorrow night were both pulled. CMLL forgot where they had Niebla Roja booked in the process. Volador isn’t going anywhere, he’s still on Friday’s CMLL card, but a break seems like it’d be good for him. Either he’s hurt and picking his spots or he’s mentally burnt out. I’d like not to watch bored Volador matches so I hope he gets better either way. The bigger issue is there’s no Marco Corleone in CMLL any more because of this same sort of overexposure leading to burnout and CMLL can’t really afford to do the same thing with Volador.

Tomorrow is the AAA TripleMania press conference. In the fine tradition of recent AAA press conferences, they have yet to announce this publicly. I’m not even quite sure when it is, except these things are always around noon (give a take an hour.)

The only two matches which have been announced so far is Blue Demon’s mask versus Dr. Wagner’s hair and Cain Velasquez facing someone at TripleMania. Cain was introduced with a big mystery/dilemma over who which guy would get the chance to face him. Pentagon, Texano and Psycho Clown all stepping up to face him. That seemed like something that would play out over the next few months of AAA events. It has instead not been mentioned again. I think everyone expects it to pick right back up at the press conference, which seems to exist in an almost different continuity with the regular TV shows. It’s not that they’re necessarily in conflict with each other, but it would also be a totally coherent way to follow AAA just to go from press conference to big show to press conference, as that’s the only place where those bigger stories get advanced.

I’d be pleasantly surprised by a TripleMania card that turns out more coherent than Verano de Escandalo. This is less a knock on the programming and more the issues of trying to fit in the entire rest of the roster in six matches, assuming AAA sticks with their original plans. AAA has to be willing to run a lot of multiperson matches who’s only purposes are squeeze in people or make some very tough choices to tell people they’re not wrestling. I didn’t even have to deal with the actual reality of telling people they didn’t make TripleMania for the card I threw together last week, and I still struggled when I had to leave off people I’ve enjoyed in AAA this year.  Adding more matches is not a strong solution; the show runs into the next day last year and there’s only so much time you can add. AAA’s got a really deep roster this year and that’s great. It’s also going to make tomorrow tough.

From a business standpoint, the TripleMania is pretty strong after years of shows people have come away liking a lot so the creative doesn’t matter as much as long as they have a big match. Blue Demon versus Dr. Wagner is that big match. There’s almost no chance Demon is losing but if “almost no chance” actually happens, that would be front page news the next day. Velasquez being involved is the great stab at getting a different audience interested in. I’m uncertain if people used to UFC’s style and presentation will be enthralled with four and half hours of a show leaning much heavier towards entertainment, but it’s worth a shot. What AAA announces tomorrow is going to be a much bigger factor in why people who read this blog like this show or not but AAA’s going to make their money either way.

This is too boring to link but there’s some back and forth with Blue Demon and others being critical of Wagner wearing his mask for the AAA in LA press conference and the of adding hair extensions before a hair match. That seems like something that may come back up again tomorrow.

2019 indie catch up, part 9 of ∞

stay Dragon bane

Recapped: 06/24/2019

Matches:

Toro Negro vs Virus
(MexaWrestling @ 04/05, 18:12, good, mluchatv)

Virus & Toro Negro demonstrated some holds and did so for an extended time. It was a lot of showing off a holding, not getting the submission and letting go to circle around, like a not great version of a Negro Navarro match. It wasn’t strictly that way, there ere some sequences, it is just offputting that these guys are masters of putting on holds but not on escaping them. The holds were still good, it just never found a higher level.

Virus making Toro Negro bridge

Arkángel Divino & Último Maldito vs Dragón Bane & Séptimo Dragón and Aramis & Látigo
(MexaWrestling @ 04/05, 12:37, good, mluchatv)

An exciting match and an inescapably sloppy one. There’s a middle section where these six guys are just nailing every big move possible in fantastic fashion. It just follows an opening where things are going wrong and builds to a dive where one person slips on the ropes on the way over. These guys are all talented and decided to go for The Best Match Ever. It might have been up there if they could’ve hit everything they went for, there’s no shortage of effort (or Canadian Destroyers.) Arkangel Divino & Ultimo Maldito have the wildest swings, showing why everyone was originally excited about them and also why it has cooled off a little bit back to back. This is a fun match that won’t hold up to the higher recommended matches of the year but worthwhile for the insanity.

the new best one of these ever

Sansón vs Flamita
(MexaWrestling @ 04/06, 10:24, good, mluchatv)

No indie name match is ever going to end in 30 seconds by design but Flamita did his best to make someone believe this would be the time it happened. Unfortunately for both him and his match, Sanson appeared to have only 30 seconds of effort for the duration of this match. This crowd was rabid for a strong Flamita match from the start and they got a B-night Sanson performance. It didn’t even feel like he was being slow and disinterested as a rudo move, it just came off as this was another match to get thru. Sanson pounding the mat and waving for support made me yell at my screen, and also seemed like a sign he wasn’t much invested in a deep heel character work. Sanson’s better than this. Flamita tried hard but this is the mildest good possible.

good evasion by the ref up to a point

Bestia 666 vs El Diablo Fly Star
(MexaWrestling @ 04/05, 17:36, good, mluchatv)

This was a death match and they gave the people who wanted to see death plenty of it. This is still not my favorite but they did a respectable amount of damage to themselves and each other during this match. Fly Star feels like the signature MexaWrestling star, except he’s also not on the next MexaWrestling show so maybe they see it differently. Maybe he’s more the Arena San Juan signature guy with other names coming and going more often. Bestia was the right opponent for this style of match. Anyway, this match delivers the big stunt spots, so much so that I didn’t want to include them as GIFs because seeing them come together is the biggest part of the enjoyment in the match. Those big spots work out, which certainly isn’t the case in every one of this type of matches.

required Fly Star GIF

Aramis & Imposible © vs Dragón Bane & Hijo de Canis Lupus for the IWRG Intercontinental Tag Team Championship
(IWRG @ 04/28, 10:58, great, +LuchaTV)

A perfectly 2019 IWRG match, from the crazy dives to the dueling head drops. These guys were going for a superb match just as much as the MexaWrestling match at the beginning of the match and pulled much more of it off. The Bane brothers working as rudos let the match come down a little bit after the hot start and then come back up with crazy Aramis spots. Aramis & Imposible don’t have any visual cohesion as a group but they do work well together. The tyical bit of everyone hitting a move in series felt more organic than usual. Dragon Bane probably needs to learn moves that aren’t head drops but the ones he used here were at least effective. This match was just nuts and I liked it very much.

getting over

Hijo Del Vikingo, Laredo Kid, Myzteziz Jr. vs Carta Brava Jr., Mocho Cota Jr., Tito Santana
(AAA/CANTU @ 06/03, 13:47, good, jose de jesus patiño)

A step below their usual TV matches, probably for their own safety. Vikingo “taking it easy” seems to be slow up at the end of the match. It seemed like it was going to be something more early on, with Poder del Norte being in full destruction mode in front of their home fans. The corner charge sequence to Laredo Kid looked brutal. Stopping for falls messed with the flow a bit; it came off CMLL-ish when Laredo did the usual headscissors to break up a careta spot. Laredo & Myzteziz looked good and many chairs were knocked over, this may just be a victim of high expectations. Definitely worth a watch if you’re enjoying these trios matches but doesn’t definitely rise above previous ones. I wouldn’t argue with putting it a bit higher.

no fear
