great match roundup, week of 2019-06-08

Vikingo magic

recaps

All 2019 round-up posts2019 MOTYC list

This was the week where Villano III Jr. & Australian Suicide had a really good match with Golden Magic & Myzteziz and then everyone forgot about it because the next match happened. Soberano/Casas was the best match this week on the Arena Mexico show that isn’t streamed. I liked the CMLL Friday show and people generally liked it more than me.

I’ve actually made 10 recap posts this week. I could be caught up next week. Or I could just take a nap.

Copa Dinastia final, Liger/LLR/Coliseo show announced, Hamada returns

Three months ago, Angel de Oro & Niebla Roja defeated Los Ingobernables’ Terrible and La Bestia del Ring in the main event of Homenaje a Dos Leyendas. That match wasn’t any good. Tonight, Angel de Oro & Niebla Roja face Los Ingobernables’ Rush & La Bestia del Ring. It probably won’t be a whole lot better. Rush will be going for revenge and it’d be nice if that double hair match was avenged with some much better. Bestia del Ring remains a major problem. Perhaps the rudos will be more motivated than their unimpressive block matches two weeks ago, but there’s no great confidence of it happening. The Arena Mexico will likely be into this match and I’m not sure they’ll get a match that’ll meet their enthusiasm.

The CL4N returns to Arena Mexico for the first time in three months. Ciber & The Chris team with Gilbert el Boricua, who’s been around a bit lately. They face Los Guererros, who are the trios champions and also seemingly the only people who feud with the CL4N. The previous matches in this feud were unsatisfying outside of some Euforia dives.

I noted how TripleMania was closing in yesterday. (48 days away.) We still don’t know the date of CMLL’s Anniversario show, but we can guess it is about 100 days away. CMLL lacks not just a date but also a main event. There are a few different possible hair match combinations in the top two match that might be considered Anniversario worthy – Rush versus either of the two Chavez, Ultimo Guerrero vs Gilbert or even Ciber – but none very compelling. CMLL seems like they have a lot of matches that could do decently well but nothing particularly exciting this year.

The rest of the card is a bit more exciting. Titan and Negro Casas haven’t met in a televised singles match since their great January 2014 Leyenda de Plata match. Casas won, as he did when they had an untelevised lightning match in 2015, but he endorsed Titan strongly after the match. Titan’s been a made man in CMLL since that point.

Soberano, Flyer and Audaz face Hechicero, Templario, and Kawato in a match with some very exciting people and some people who are occasionally exciting for the wrong reasons. CMLL pays little mind to weight classes at this point, so it is hard to understand why they didn’t just fake Templario as a lightweight and do him versus Audaz in the title decider.

Drone, Fuego, and Triton versus Disturbio, Tiger, and Virus is a match which seems like it is has happened many times but the exact combination has not. Tiger & Triton were feuding last week, though Kawato & Black Panther were feuding one week and not the next. Robin & Super Astro Jr. are a fun team who take on a not fun team of Hijo del Signo & Espiritu Negro.

This show will stream on Marca and their (blocked in the US) YouTube channel at 8:30 pm. I will also be streaming it on YouTube, though I may not be watching it live.

Leo Riano is picking the Chavez Brothers, which has me sure Rush & Bestia are winning.

Lucha Central has a preview.

Arena Coliseo Guadalajara turns 60 today. The weekend celebration includes an art exhibition with Rayo de Jalisco Jr. starting at 4 pm today, a film festival Saturday and a hair match on Sunday.

Dalton Castle has a training video for his June 28th ROH PPV match with Dragon Lee. It’s pretty enjoyable.

The Crash on 07/05

Penta, Fenix and TBD vs Dragon Lee, Mistico and Rush is advertised for the 07/07 show in Ecatepec.

Nacion Lucha Libre hasn’t updated their 07/11 lineup with the removal of AAA wrestlers, but the ticket website has a new poster. Matt Sydal and Bandido are among those included. There’s a lot of faces so I may be missing someone, but it looks like Negro Navarro, Canek and Solar are not pictured now.

Jushin Thunder Lyger will wrestle on 07/20 in Arena Coliseo as part of a Lucha Libre Real show. That’s one day after his final “CMLL” match. Arena Coliseo having an indie show instead of a CMLL one on Saturday is pretty notable. Lucah Memes among others had been wanting to run a show there for years. For their part, CMLL will be selling 80 meet & greet tickets with Lyger for the 07/19 show.

07/21 Pro Wrestling Mexico (Arena Coliseo Monterrey, debut show)

The Hamada appearance would be her first match in 17 months, since being arrested on a drug charge in Japan. Hamada has been in Mexico for many months and hopefully working on whatever issues she had.

Not a lot of news from Keepin’ It 100, though there was an extended discussion of both the different fan incidents in Cancun and Aerostar’s dive prior to the usual lucha libre discussion in the Masked Republic minute. Konnan said Aerostar’s dive was approved ahead of time and Aerostar wants to do it again at TripleMania (to prove he can do it better) but Aerostar banned from doing it again. The rest was the usual things about Fenix & Pentagon definitely signing exclusive soon to both AEW & AAA soon and more new talent coming in after TripleMania. It is weird to hear Konnan talk about how those guys are only going to be working two promotions soon followed by a plug for them working Expo Lucha. I’m sure it all works out.

In Arena Coliseo Chihuahua, Tigre del Ring took Boricua’s mask. Boricua is Leonardo Ruiz Ornelas, 33 years old, 7 years a wrestler.

Ciclope & Miedo Extremo are headed to Japan from July 3 to the 10th.

LuchaWorld has the latest news update.

Lineups

CMLL (TUE) 06/25/2019 Arena México
1) Acero & Aéreo vs Mercurio & Pequeño Olímpico
2) Magnus, Retro, Robin vs Cancerbero, Nitro, Raziel
3) Súper Astro Jr. vs Halcón Suriano Jr. [lightning]
4) Black Panther, Blue Panther Jr., Fuego vs Pólvora, Vangellys, Virus
5) Audaz, Flyer, Rey Cometa vs Felino, Hechicero, Templario
6) Místico, Soberano Jr., Valiente vs Cuatrero, Forastero, Sansón

This looks like a good CMLL Tuesday card. I’m confused too. Audaz & Flyer in the semi-main and Super Astro & Halcon Suriano in a lightning match (!) are four of the most likely suspects for the lightweight championship. The main event should be good.

CMLL (TUE) 06/25/2019 Arena Coliseo Guadalajara
1) Explosivo, Star Black, Vaquero Jr. vs Gran Kenut, Paymon, Ráfaga
2) Magia Blanca, Oro Jr., Príncipe Diamante vs Difunto, Furia Roja, Guerrero de la Muerte
3) Esfinge, Titán, Tritón vs Ephesto, Luciferno, Mephisto
4) Ángel de Oro, Kráneo, Niebla Roja vs La Bestia Del Ring, Rush, Terrible
5) Carístico, Dragón Lee, Volador Jr. vs Euforia, Gran Guerrero, Último Guerrero

This main event should be good. Semi-main has an immediate rematch from tonight’s show.

MDA (SUN) 06/30/2019 Arena Naucalpan
1) Auzter, Blue Monster Jr., Tempo vs Eurus, Magnético, Puma de Oro
2) Ludark Shaitan vs Chik Tormenta
3) Demasiado vs Cerebro Negro vs Dinamic Black
4) Hijo de Canis Lupus & Imposible vs Ovett & Sádico
5) Aramis & Dragón Bane vs Aeroboy & Extreme Tiger
6) Demonio Infernal, Eterno, Lunatik Xtreme vs Black Warrior Jr., Herodes Jr., Hijo de Pirata Morgan and La Máscara, Trauma I, Trauma II
7) Máscara Sagrada & Octagón vs Canek & Villano IV and Fuerza Guerrera & Pirata Morgan and Black Terry & Black Warrior

This was the show that was supposed to include Vampiro. This was also the show replacing the Lucha Memes show that broke down the PALL alliance. It’s not, you know, any good. Maybe nostalgia will get people to turn out for the main event. Matches 2/5 might be good. Mascara & Los Traumas are a perfect team of people who are never ever going to lose.

RIOT Tonto Evento Sorpresa No. 2: 2019-02-02

a 630

Recapped: 06/19/2019

Matches:

This show took place on February 2nd, 2019 at Arena Femenil in Monterrey. I haven’t added timestamps yet but you can see the whole show at https://riotlucha.pivotshare.com/ via a $5 monthly subscription or $3.50 rental. It is also available as part of the Highspots Wrestling Network’s $10/month subscription. The show is worth the money.

Erick Ortiz vs Madness
(10:01, great)

Erick Ortiz has medium length hair and Erick Ortiz showed real charisma in this match. I don’t know if this is causation or correlation but he shouldn’t be allowed to cut his hair until we’re sure either way. Ortiz is always good in the past in RIOT. This one seemed better, with Ortiz just seeming sharp and enjoying what he was doing. There were cool hold exchanges to start that didn’t follow a usual pattern, then generally normal off done really well. It felt like a Caifan match with less chops if that makes any sense. Madness looked better in his in-ring flying than his one big dive, and his spear off the ropes was very well timed. There’s some off moments early on but this far exceeded my expectations.

a well timed spear

Kratoz & Prometeo vs Chik Tormenta & Willy Banderas
(12:54, good)

Brian Villa should be concerned about being bumped out of his team by Chik Tormenta. She and Willy showed some good teamwork for a non-team, matching and occasionally outshining the regular Mismos de Siempre team. This match had some entertaining moments and moved well, feeling shorter than the time indicated. It was a bit sloppy at times, sometimes dangerously. Willy looks about knocked out at the finish and Prometo seemed to be hurting earlier. Both do make I to their feet and this was overall entertaining, but it could’ve landed a bit better.

greeting from Guadalajara

Látigo vs Belial
(15:16, good)

This is two my favorite under the radar guys so I was particularly excited to see it, and then I just wasn’t in it a lot on the first moments. The “proving you can do technical wrestling part” of classic lucha libre matches is tricky. Just doing the same routine everyone else does makes it totally skippable, but overly creative stuff like here (and earlier) seems off because there’s no credibility to holds early in the match. Belial and Latigo were doing a Negro Navarro/Solar bit, with the same hold demonstration quality that keeps me from enjoying some of their work. This is maybe overemphasizing the first quarter of a match that got plenty of time to work with, and stuff like the rolling cradle sequence they pull in right after was really good. Latigo feels like a guy with a lot of Skayde in him right now with the surprising roll-ups and armdrags. Belial did the low elevation tope among other things and I always like that. This just never got me emotionally but I could see others liking it more.

the aforementioned tope

Aeroboy vs Laredo Kid
(14:28, great)

Another Laredo Kid match of just throwing bombs at each other until someone is no longer moving. This in no way felt like nearly 15 minutes, helped by both guys have a big variety of offense to go thru. Laredo’s cutter looked as good as it ever has in this match and his moonsault isn’t far off. Aeroboy is a good match for him, though he gives on his plan to attack Laredo’s shoulder awful quickly. He did absolutely squash Laredo with the senton. This fits in with some of Laredo’s best stuff from this year.

Laredo cutter

Kaientai & Lord Byron vs Golden Boy & Símbolo
(9:32, good)

These guys are still not my favorite but I liked this Unmexicans matches more than previous ones. They had some good action and it didn’t overstay it’s welcome. They teased a sunset flip bomb thru a lot of objects, did a dive instead, and I think the bomb would’ve been much safer somehow. Golden Boy & Simbolo are a professional tag team and the crowd seemed happy to see them in this environment.

the agony

Demonio del Aire vs Aramis
(19:16, good)

It didn’t seem like many in the Monterrey crowd knew who Aramis was when he came out. He made sure they knew who he was by the time they were done. Demonio del Aire is good for his experience level, with some cool moments and some shaky points. Aramis is just a protege. He seems to know not just the moves (and does them well) but has a feel of when to slow down and when to pick up, and when to just let the other guy go for a while. The one count kickout here didn’t quite get over with this crowd, but seems a clear sign he’s been watching a lot of wrestling where it did get over. This was a strong introduction match of what he could do for new fans.

Aramis

Bandido vs Sammy Guevara
(21:01, great)

This would’ve been a “dream match” if it had been announced beforehand, and Bandido and Sammy Guevera live up to the expectations that didn’t actually exist. There’s a lot of flying, there’s a lot of superkicks, Sammy Guevera flips off many people. They did a good job of mixing up what they were doing throughout the match to not run anything in the ground by the end. The backbreaker bit worked much better for the RIOT crowd than most, as did the over the top Canadian Destroyer bit that ended up going viral from this match. The end game lacks a little of drama. They both got to do their big moves, and they both had a lot of impact on them, but there was not a lot of fight to them. It’s about a straight forward as it goes. I keep going back and forth about the rating. It’s somewhere in this area.
