lucha TV preview for weekend of June 21st, 2019

full size

Did you know: AAA’s YouTube show is six tapings behind what’s happened. That means they can stick to just one week for each taping for quite a while. This weekend gets the Tuxtla Guiterrez show, which was just all right.

I don’t know why I put all six matches on the CMLL Sunday shows when they never seem to air the lightning match but whatever.

Will this be the week where Guadalajara works again? Probably not.

What happened:

Nothing happened on this show.

The opener is joined in progress.

Thoughts:

mini teamwork

I watched the trios matches and just have nothing to say about all of them. Audaz got to do one interesting spot in a match that was built around Kraneo being big. The main event was dominated by the rudos not doing much and the tecnicos didn’t really make up for in the third fall. CMLL not bothering to do a replacement feud is dispiriting. The fans seemed to be having fun at the show but this is not a necessary show for people who watch CMLL all the time.

Drone wanted to work a fast fluid match and Virus wanted to work slower with some counters. It didn’t mesh as nicely as I thought it might. Drone being way off on a rope flip moonsault and covering anyway was also not great. There are hints and bits of a good match here but it didn’t come together.

mask pulls and fouls cause the referee just to call it a draw so everyone could move on with their life

Small crowd for a benefit show, which is a bit disappointing. Matches 5/6 sounded like they were pretty good. The Traumas have not lost besides by DQ since coming back to Arena Naucalpan and I don’t think that’s changing any time soon.

CMLL announced Jushin Thunder Lyger will have his last match in Mexico at Arena Mexico on Friday 07/19. Lyger is planning on retiring early next January on NJPW’s WrestleKingdom shows. Lyger last appeared in CMLL in 2011, part of extended runs in Mexico in 2010 and 2011. His last match in Arena Mexico was a singles match with Ultimo Guerrero. There’s no word who he will wrestle this time. A singles match with Negro Casas would be great, but CMLL seems more likely to do a trios match to get more people involved.

Lyger is expected to wrestle a few other dates in Mexico in the next month. He was briefly teased for a lucha libre expo before that video was disappeared from the internet. My impression is anyone else who was planning on using Lyger was required to wait for CMLL to make their announcement before they could make any of their own, and so a select few appearances might be announced soon.

Today’s La Planchitas gossip is “here’s something that was posted on Facebook a week ago.” There was a private show at Arena Coliseo Guadalajara with maybe 100 people there. There was a women’s tag scheduled – La Pantera & Chik Tormenta vs Super Estrella & Silueta – but Pantera didn’t make the show for whatever reason. They could’ve had a triangle match, only a messenger on behalf of booker Magnum told Tormenta she was no longer allowed to wrestle because she was working AAA shows. Perhaps because it was a private show with not the usual amount of staff, Tormenta still came to the ring in gear, got the mic by the ring announcer and cut a promo on Magnum for not allowing her to wrestle. That’s in the video on Facebook. CMLL typically doesn’t allow people who appear on AAA TV to appear on their shows, but this was a show just using CMLL’s building in front of a handful of people that no one would’ve known even happened otherwise, and it hadn’t been a problem when they actually booked her for the show.

Planchitas goes on to claim that Magnum – who is referred to as a retired wrestler though he had a match two weeks ago – is taking a bit of pay from the younger Guadalajara wrestlers. He gives them a good payment for their debut and then keeps a part of their payoff going forward as a fee the luchadors pay to keep getting booked. This has been known to happen in other places.

The Wrestling Observer Newsletter writes that there are plans to have a “major international match involving AEW talent” on TripleMania. AEW on TripleMania in some form has been a guarantee since the promotions announced they’re working together and will likely go on every year as long as they’re working together. The matches at Rey de Reyes and Verano de Escandalo have been AEW talent vs AEW talent, and I wonder if the TripleMania match will be the same.

In the bigger picture, it is 44 days until TripleMania and AAA has announced exactly 1.5 matches. There’s Blue Demon versus Dr. Wagner Jr. in a mask match. There’s Cain Velazquez versus “we’ll get back to you at some point not sure when” with no one really talking about it since it was announced. That’s all. AAA did promise six main event level matches for TripleMania and we’ve seen only two of them, so maybe there are big drawing matches left to announce. AAA not really announcing anything more for TripleMania does fit the general pattern of the year: AAA focuses heavily on the next big show and only gives the date for the next. (That may mean there’s no lineup for MSG until after TripleMania, and none for LA until after MSG.) TripleMania is now the next big show, so perhaps we should start expecting an unannounced press conference soon.

The Crash on 07/05

RIOT’s La Riña En El Cerro de La Silla (08/23 & 08/24) participants:

  1. Douki
  2. Latigo
  3. Erik Ortiz
  4. Aramis
  5. Belial
  6. Madness
  7. Iron Kid
  8. Arez
  9. Tony Rodriguez
  10. Demonio del Aire
  11. Fuego del Sol – new
  12. TBA

+LuchaTV had a sit-down interview with Aramis. He mentioned he’s not signed a contract with AAA because finishing school is his focus right now. There’s been an interest in bringing Aramis to the US. He hasn’t been able to go because of school and lack of visa, though he believes he’ll have one in 2-3 months. There are no guarantees when it comes to those visas though.

The latest Vampiro medical update is a slideshow he posted mentioned he has a stroke in November 2018. I honestly can not recall if this is new or old information.

Lucha Central has a profile of Ludark Shaitan.

SuperLuchas has an interview with Laredo Kid about getting a chance in AEW.

Robin & Super Astro Jr. talk about working CMLL openers.

DTU posted an interview with Jimmy. He came up with Jimmy because he wanted an easy to remember name and he knew Jimmy from Jimmy Neutron.

Lucha Talk has a new episode.

Lineup

IWRG (SUN) 06/23/2019 Arena Naucalpan
1) Ángel Drago, Noisy Boy, Spider Fly vs Cosmic, Dinámico, Voltrex
2) Águila Oriental, Dranzer, Halcón Jr. vs Bisoferia, Canival, Galactus
3) Ángel Estrella Jr., Cheff Benito, Fireman vs Güero Palma, Guerrero 2000, Kanon
4) Atomic Star, Black Shadow Jr., Ovett Jr. vs Dragón Fly, Jessy Ventura, Mosca
5) Auzter, Black Dragón, Chicanito, Death Metal, Latino, Neza Kid, Puma de Oro, Tortuga Leo vs Angelito, Atomic Boy, Baby Star, Calibus, Pegasuz, Príncipe Aéreo, Sherkan, Torito Negro[Torneo FILL]
IWRG vs MexaWrestling
6) Dragón Bane & Hijo de Canis Lupus vs Trauma I & Trauma II

I misunderstand which Torneo FILL they were running, but they’re definitely running one. No one can decide of the spelling of the luchador who man be “Shere Khan”. The chance of the main event ending clean is zero.

CMLL (MON) 06/24/2019 Arena Puebla
1) Astro, Meyer, Rey Samuray vs Black Tiger, Guerrero Espacial, Joker
2) King Jaguar, Magia Blanca, Súper Astro Jr. vs El Malayo, El Perverso, Fuerza Chicana
3) Esfinge & Tritón © vs Felino & Tiger [Arena Coliseo TAG]
second defense
4) Kráneo, Soberano Jr., Volcano vs Gran Guerrero, Rey Bucanero, Templario
5) Carístico, Titán, Volador Jr. vs Cuatrero, Forastero, Sansón

Go Team Casas. This is the first time Felino has challenged for this title since it was brought back; we don’t have complete records when Babe Casas may have been a challenger. There’s been a handful of Arena Coliseo Tag Team championship matches outside of Arena Coliseo the last few years, but the title has never changed hands outside of the building.

A main event is a rematch, probably setting up something for 07/01.

CMLL Puebla: 2019-06-10

a Corsario de Fuego GIF

Recapped: 06/10/2019

Matches:

Meyer, Millenium, Tigre Rojo Jr. beat Black Tiger, Centella Roja, Fuerza Chicana
(12:57 [5:09, 3:38, 4:10], 1/3, n/r, VideosOficialesCMLL)

Arkalis, King Jaguar, Pegasso beat Corsario De Fuego, El Malayo, El Perverso
(15:09 [6:10, 4:00, 4:59], 1/3, ok, VideosOficialesCMLL)

Felino, Misterioso Jr., Tiger beat Esfinge, Fuego, Tritón
(11:27 [4:32, 2:07, 4:48], 1/3, n/r, VideosOficialesCMLL)

Cuatrero, Forastero, Sansón beat Euforia, Gran Guerrero, Templario
(8:25 [2:46, 2:16, 3:23], 1/3, ok, VideosOficialesCMLL)

Máscara Año 2000, Rey Bucanero, Terrible beat Ángel de Oro, Niebla Roja, Último Guerrero in a relevos increíbles match
(8:51 [2:38, 3:12, 3:01], 1/3, ok, VideosOficialesCMLL)

What happened:

UG had Terrible beat with the Pulpo Guerrero but Mascara 2000 distracted the referee. Terrible grabbed the bottom rope on his pin of Ultimo Guerrero. This sets up a singles match between them.

Centella Roja is a rudo now. It is not at all important, but I am noting it happened to note it happened with no explanation. Corsario de Fuego also showed up.

Leobardo Magadan has been announcing the last couple of weeks and appears to be a permanent replacement for Julio Cesar Rivera on these shows. (Maybe because JCR is working Sundays now?)

Thoughts:

not sure what this was

Guerreros/NGD was fun while it lasted and told a surprising story about the Dinamitas being the better team than this configuration of the Guerreros, but it is really short. There’s a great match here if they put in the time, and this felt instead like the tournament shorted version of it. It was promising and disappointing at the same time.

Corsario de Fuego is fine, having only one spot but it was with Stigma so I don’t think it even counts. I have no idea how luchadors are chosen to wrestle in Arena Puebla at this point. Corsario de Fuego’s Xalapa is four hours a way and he’s still wrestling there regularly. He’s probably not training with Black Tiger regularly. He doesn’t come across as a young promising guy or the best guy, just a guy. If CMLL is just opening Arena Puebla bookings for people who want to pay their way on, they probably could use more attention for it to get the price up. If it’s just people doing favors for other people, that’s great for them but it isn’t helpful for making the shows entertaining.
