The build to Sunday’s Lucha Time show in Monterrey had Alberto talking about Pentagon having the potential to be a big star, but not being able to call himself a big star until he stopped working shows in front of 200 or 500 people and instead ones of 10,000 people. This was storyline to build up the match, though Alberto has said similar things before as part of his staking his claim as one of the biggest Mexican wrestling stars of all time. Maybe everyone should’ve looked at the tickets sold before doing this bit because everyone looked foolish when this show – headlined by Alberto & Hijo de Dos Caras vs Lucha Brothers vs Hijo de Wagner/Galeno del Mal – drew what looked like about 500 people to Arena Jose Sulaiman. That’s about 10% of capacity. Alberto’s Combates Americas show last month with Sexy Star outdrew it easily.

Alberto hung himself out to dry with those comments. It doesn’t really reflect well on Penta & Fenix either, though at least they’ll be headling better-attended shows this month. (It is about right for the Wagners, who really didn’t belong in that match at this point in their careers.) Alberto’s been a non-factor since he got fired from Impact last year. There’s been talk of Alberto maybe working TripleMania as part of Cain Velazquez. It wouldn’t be a stretch to see him be asked to work the AAA MSG show too, but I’m not sure how much means to lucha libre fans at this point. Alberto is still great at getting media attention based off that WWE run but he’d need to seem re-energized on regular TV before I think he’d really sell tickets. It also kind of makes me wonder about the “Pro Wrestling Monterrey” super indie promotion teased by Konnan and Roberto Figueroa (promoter of Lucha Time.) Monterrey seems oversaturated with promotions trying to run the same type of shows.

LuchaMania Monterrey has highlights of Bandido vs Rey Horus from that show.

Tonight in Puebla has the latest edition of the Volador/Caristico rivalry. Volador’s been cheating to get wins in the lead-up, which usually means Caristico will get the big revenge win in the end. That’d be a change from usual. Volador typically has won this singles match whenever they’ve met in CMLL since Caristico’s return, with the exception of the one time CMLL decided to run it back to back weeks. Volador won the last match in FantasticaMania earlier this year, as well as when they had it in Puebla about 9 months ago. These two are typically good together, though effort on Monday night can vary.

Mistico, Atlantis, and Soberano take on Ultimo Guerrero, Cavernario and Gran Guerrero in a promising semi-final. Hechicero teams with Sagrado & Misterioso to take on Los Gorillas del Ring & Esfinge. I’m not excited for that one, and less so for Triton, Star Jr. and King Jaguar taking on Nitro, Coyote and Disturbio. The first two matches are heavy on locals with no particular interesting matchup.

The show starts at 9 pm on CMLL’s YouTube channel.

In the great ratings controversy of 2019, both Record and El Planchitas have put out articles saying the 5.4 million number for week one of Rey de Reyes is correct. Those articles sort of expose each other as working off the same press release from either Azteca or AAA, since they both come up with the idea that this is the highest rating a wrestling show has gotten in 80 years of Mexican TV. El Planchitas says he called AAA & Azteca to find out the info after last week reporting the lower numbers SuperLuchas had.

AAA has Psicosis and Histeria listed as wrestling on their 05/20 spot show in Leon. Histeria hasn’t been seen in a match since suffering a heart attack late last year, though AAA has continued to list him on lineups from time to time.

Psycho Kid took Mazinger’s mask in a cage match on Thursday in Arena Cuautitlán Izcalli.

Deluto IV took Colmillo’s hair on Sunday in Pachuca.
