Rey Horus won by pinning MJF. Theory lost on his first defense. Foreigners attacked Brooks after the match. Rebelion Amarilla made the save and Horus joined.

5) Bestia 666 & Mecha Wolf © b Gran Guerrero & Último Guerrero [The Crash TAG, #1 Contenders]
Bestia & Mecha Wolf win a title shot by Wolf pinning Gran Guerrero
6) Penta 0M & Rey Fénix © b El Bandido & Flamita [The CRASH TAG]
first defense for Lucha Brothers. Bandido & Flamita had seemingly won the titles in the interim but it was meant to be a #1 contenders match. Penta beat Bandido.

The show was said to be good but attendance was lower than usual, which had to be disappointing given a bigger than usual lineup. The Canelo Alvarez fight seemed to be blamed, but they knew that was happening when they loaded up this show. Penta & Fenix keeping the tag titles suggest they haven’t signed AAA deals yet.

Crash is back on 05/24 with the Chavez versus Los Traumas. At the show, they announced Austin Theory & Caristico vs Hijo del Fantasma & Rey Horuz for that show as well.

6) Rush b Volador Jr.

Two straight Rush matches with clean finishes, what parallel world have we entered. Rush bragged about his win. Principe Diamante and Espanto Jr. have promos as if they’re having a (lightning) match next week.

AAA TV (SUN) 05/05/2019 CUM Hermosillo, Hermosillo, Sonora [AAA, thecubsfan]
1) Arez & Samoano b Big Mami & Hijo del Tirantes and Faby Apache & Niño Hamburguesa  (posted by Lucha Libre AAA (Twitch))
9:22. Keyra beat Big Mami with a moonsault. Originally a rudos/tecnicos trios match. Konnan changed the match, saying it would be more interesting as a three way tag. He was wrong. Mami & Hamburguesa teased fighting but did not. Lady Maravilla distracted Hamburguesa into a loss. Tirantes went onto referee the rest of the show as normal.
2) Chik Tormenta & Lady Maravilla b Mamba & Máximo  (posted by Lucha Libre AAA (Twitch))
11:49. Maravilla beat Mamba with a Devil’s Wings when a Spanish Fly attempt went wrong. Big Mami attacked Maravilla after the match.
3) Carta Brava Jr., Mocho Cota Jr., Tito Santana b Flamita, Hijo Del Vikingo, Myzteziz Jr.  (posted by Lucha Libre AAA (Twitch))
9:06. Mocha Cota Spanish Fly Flamita. La Parka attacked Poder del Norte, blaming them for attack his son (which was actually Los Mercenarios but Fantasma isn’t around now.)
4) Arez, Monsther Clown, Taurus b Drago, Golden Magic, La Parka  (posted by Lucha Libre AAA (Twitch))
12:08. Taurus beat Drago with a Rodeo Driver.
5) Chessman, Rey Escorpión, Texano Jr. b Dr. Wagner Jr., Pagano, Psycho Clown  (posted by Lucha Libre AAA (Twitch))
17:44. Chessman pinned Pagano after hitting him in the leg with a chair. Psycho Clown attacked the rudos, Taurus speared him, Myzteziz, Parka & Vikingo came out for the save, Poder del Norte attacked them and the tecnicos were all laid out.

This was the weaker of the two shows this weekend. The third match was great, but surrounded by not good (the first couple of matches) and just OK (the last two matches.)

The biggest news of the show was mentioned before the matches started. The announcers talking about discussions off screen where the Young Bucks were being asked to defend the tag team titles at Verano de Escandalo & Cody wanted revenge on Taurus there as well. They said an announcement on all of that would come in the next few days. Verano de Escandalo is after AEW’s Double or Nothing, so advertising a Young Bucks title defense in AAA would be a bit of a spoiler for AEW’s debut main event.

Rey Escorpion finally got a pin on Psycho Clown and I’m not sure of anything else of importance happened on these two shows. It’s not as though AAA is spreading the plot developments over the increased amount of shows, they’re just picking shows (and weekends) to not do anything in particular. The bigger news was who wasn’t there.

La Mascara leaves AAA

Revolucion Lucha Libre tried to sell Saturday’s Arena Lopez Mateos as a big deal to see Rush & Hijo del Fantasma on the same team because Fantasma had been trying to set up a match between them since leaving AAA. Not enough people thought this was a big deal, judging from turnout. Their team did break down in a way to set up a match: Rush & La Bestia del Ring ended up attacking Fantasma. Who should happen to make save but La Mascara – except Mascara actually then betrayed ex-Mercenario partner Fantasma to help ex-Ingobernable partner Rush.

La Mascara told the press he was totally independent and done with AAA. Mascara was listed on both AAA TV tapings this weekend and is listed on the next TV tapings. (This is something AAA should fix.) It may not be a total surprise to AAA that La Mascara’s gone; the Rey de Reyes feud seemed to end the Mascara vs Psycho/Maximo feud on screen and there didn’t seem to be any big plans for him going forward.

I’m not sure if La Mascara’s fourteen month AAA run can properly be called a disappointment but it still was lower than low expectations for him. AAA spent a lot of time trying to get over the Alvardo family idea, then a lot more Mascara against his family, and meanwhile most matches he was in were worse for him being involved. Mascara rarely seemed lethargic in AAA. It is less a disappointment that the long built Mascara/Maximo apuesta match won’t be happening and more a relief he won’t be around to weigh down good matches. AAA was unlikely to ever get ask La Mascara to leave as to not offend Psycho Clown & Maximo but they’re better of with him gone.

If a friend and tag partner of Rush left AAA, under normal circumstances, there’s a good chance they’d have an opening to go to CMLL. I think that, if La Mascara’s firing involved doing something to an undercard guy who was not politically connected, enough time has passed where he might have had a shot at returning to CMLL. La Mascara wrecked Ultimo Guerrero’s car, and I’m not sure how they get past that. Mascara is likely stuck on the indies for the foreseeable future.

If you told me one year ago that Puma King would be a main eventer in AAA and La Mascara and Hijo del Fantasma would not be, not even be in AAA any more, I would be so confused.

Other notes

General tickets went on sale for the AAA MSG show today. I counted all the little white dots of sold tickets on the seat map and came up with around 1,800 tickets sold as of this evening. Some of those (especially the close ones) might have never been intended to sell or might have been part of VIP packages, that’s not a perfect number. It is more than I would’ve thought, though it is a long way from filling out the building. We don’t know how many tickets AAA (or whoever bought the show) needs sold for it to be a success. The only safe way to tell is how confidently they react. I’m still not buying plane tickets until August.

A few days ago, LA Park said Dr. Wagner should retire if he loses his hair. Dr. Wagner agrees and told +LuchaTV he would retire if he lost at TripleMania. This seems unlikely to actually happen but it is a useful bit of hype.

Demus took Mike Segura’s hair on Friday night in Arena Xalapa. Segura was not advertised for that match.

LuchaWorld is back with a Lucha Report.

MexaWrestling’s next show is June 8th and will include Simbolo and Golden Boy from Monterrey.
