Mexa Wrestling: 2018-08-04

seems like a sound idea

Recapped: 11/17-19/2018

This is sort of a catchup post. I’ll leave off the results in case you have not been spoiled on a three and a half old show.

All matches took place on Arena San Juan Pantitlan, Ciudad Nezahualcóyotl, Estado de México in 08/04/2018.

Matches:

Mexa 20 person Mexa Rumble
(26:43, n/r,
+LuchaTV)

I don’t have much to stay on this one. I wasn’t planning on watching it until I remembered I could finally figure out the missing people from the results, and then I decided I might as well watch the show. (It was Ciclon Negro, Corsario Negro, and runner-up Fly Warrior.) What I watched of this match was a mess, overcrowded with people who wanted to be in for the Negro Casas spot at the end and left seconds later. Maybe jump to 20:15 to hear the big reaction when the crowd realizes Negro Casas is a surprise, and skip everything before and after.

Lady Maravilla vs Keyra
(9:52, good,
+LuchaTV)

Keyra and Lady Maravilla had a strong exhibition of many of their bigger moves, though it never really collapsed into a match with any direction. The match just kind of went back and forth indiscriminately between the two women, with the suplexes and the kicks looking really sharp. The crowd was willing to support Keyra, but Maravilla wasn’t as strong a ruda as she’s been in AAA later. This was solidly good but the ceiling for their matches feels significantly higher. Maybe all the confetti and garbage on the mat threw them off a little bit. I know it really distracted me.

how are these people friends

The King (Rey Fenix) vs Titán
(10:52, good,
+LuchaTV)

Fenix versus Titan was both good and also not close to the how good they could theoretically be on a different day. This was definitely a match worked like they had to save themselves for another match that not, with a lot of the usual highspots substituted out for even more chops. They had good chemistry in what they did and the problem here is mostly about not living about the expectations rather than doing something and failing. Fenix lost Titan on the finish, and maybe that can be fixed on a rematch.

Fenix coming thru

El Bandido & Flamita vs Eterno & Steve Pain
(15:02, good,
+LuchaTV)

The Mexablood/Anarquia was a good exhibition of spots, but it seemed off. I think the pace wasn’t there. The moves looked good, but it felt slow in between them and the match didn’t have a great rhythm to it. It’s probably more the rudos there, since MexaBlood has zoomed along everywhere else, but it keep the match from getting a great rhythm. Everyone got to do a lot because they had so much time, but it felt more like guys just doing stuff rather than any direction they were going. Worth a watch but most MexaBlood matches since then have felt bigger.

two man pain cutter

Arez, Erick Ortiz, Mr. Iguana vs Aramis, Centurion, Látigo
(13:22, great,
CaritaJC LuchaLibre)

What Happened: Match is noticeably edited, though it seems like most of it the editing is cutting out breaks between moves.

Review: [great] The crowd wanted to hate this match, chanting for another match quickly. This was a show with extreme matches and big names and some of these guys aren’t well known to this crowd, at least this point. Aramis & Erick Ortiz would’ve gotten over with their work alone in front of a friendlier crowd, but it’s really the Arez & Latigo sequence which turns it around for them via some fancy holds and reversals. The action gets to so good from there, just packed with great looks pots. I would’ve loved to see a full version like shot on +Lucha, but this version has the prefect view of Aramis’ dive. Aramis Also pulls off the best version of the neckbreaker dive that’s become popular. They went a perfect length and finished strong. An easy recommendation.

Aramis coming at you

Tiger vs Metaleón
(10:03, good,
Tortas Súper Astro y Sin Aflojar Videoblog)

Maybe a generous good grade. This was a suitable violent enough match for the rest of the show, with plenty of unnecessary chair shots to the head and such. The action was generally alright and the crowd as strongly into it. Metaleon hits a cool tope and Tiger is trying, but it’s not as interesting as the other matches, even the flawed ones. Not a bad match but not one you need to go out of your way to watch.

a long tope

Toxin vs Fly Star, mask vs mask
(35:36 seen, great, +LuchaTV)

What Happened: This is a three fall match. There are falls, but there is no break between the first and second fall. There is a break before the third fall, because both are too hurt to keep fighting, but there’s no real whistle to start the time. I’ve got the clock running, but dock 65 seconds if you want to be strict. There is an edit in the match as they go wandering around the second level to set up the balcony dive. The announcers disappear for several minutes following the edit.

Review: The Toxin/Fly Star match is the match of the year in terms of times something they did caused me to scream in horror and wonder what they were thinking. It’s a brutal messy match. The violence is embraced early on – you don’t dump thumbtacks on someone, then moonsault onto them unless you really like some blood – but it also never feels meaningless. Both Fly Star and Toxin look destroyed in the last few minutes of the match, only hanging on due to stubbornly want to give every bit of themselves to this match. It is very long as a result, though it never feels long just for length’s sake, just long because they have so much more they’re willing to do to each other. The match came across as an incredible scene live, helped a lot by the crowd (and the match) having a clear favorite. The finish comes off as a bit underwhelming considered all that’s come before it, but the crowd still reacts strong again. This didn’t immediately feel like a match of the year to me, but it did come off as an epic match.
