Timestamps for the matches in case those links don’t work:

00:17:39 Keyra vs Máscarita Sagrada (original)
00:33:31 Texano Jr. vs Niño Hamburguesa
00:59:12 Taya vs Australian Suicide
01:31:40 Golden Magic vs Fénix

Main event was really good, semi-main was worth watching if you want to see Suicide being silly. You can skip the first two easily.

Taya noted this was not a full time return to AAA, but participating in this tournament as part of promotions working together. I was surprised Taya lost her return match. AAA did not play up her issues with the promotion (as they did with Kross last week.) Vampiro referenced Taya being controversial, but mostly talked her up as the best women’s wrestler in the world in a similar fashion to what he did on Lucha Underground.

Standings so far

1 Win: Vanilla, Pagano, Psycho Clown, Pentagon Jr., Lady Shani, Aerostar, Killer Kross, Laredo Kid, Mascarita Sagrada, Texano Jr., Australian Suicide and Fenix.
1 Loss: La Hiedra, Taurus, Murder Clown, Puma King, Lady Maravilla, Maximo, Hijo del Vikingo, Drago, Keyra, Nino Hamburguesa, Taya, and Golden Magic

Round 2 starts next week. That should bring some actual stakes to these matches. How I think it’s supposed to go:

  • luchadors who pick up a second win advance all the way to the 12/19 final
  • luchadors who end up with one win and one loss move onto the 12/12 wild card show
  • luchadors who end up with two losses are done – unless they need more people to fill out the wild card show.

I really don’t have a good sense of who’s going to win. Of the people with one win, Pentagon, Laredo and Fenix have looked the best, but none of them are AAA full timers and that might disqualify them. Maybe Psycho Clown wins this championship to make up for never winning a real AAA one? Maybe Drago or Vikingo come back from one loss to get the big win? Maybe we just won’t get a good idea until we see which 12 are left for the final.

Arena Naucalpan tonight has LA Park vs Penta 0M vs Rush as the main event in a cage. Not sure why you want to put guys who brawl around an arena in a cage but I’m not smart enough to understand indie lucha. It’s listed as a IWRG show, but it appears to be sponsored by the same people who as usual for the Montanez shows. Ricky Marvin versus new dad (again) Jack Evans could be fun. This will eventually turn up on +LuchaTV.

The CMLL wrestlers for the usual Wednesday media session were Diamante Azul & Valiente (talking about their tag team title match), Rey Bucanero & Niebla Roja (talking about their hair match) and Atlantis Jr.

Atlantis Jr. is 20 years old and says he’s spent eight years training with Ringo Mendoza, Virus, Arkangel de la Meurte, Franco Colombo, Ultimo Guerrero, Ultimo Dragoncito and Atlantis. (That’s all of CMLL’s trainers over the last eight years, or at least those still working CMLL.) Atlantis Jr. does not have a firm start date for Mexico, but he believes it’ll be soon after the Fantastica Mania tour. Atlantis Jr. says he would love to face Hijo del Villano III to continue that family feud. He’s told his father that he won’t let his name down and will be an event better wrestler. Good luck on that.

The El Planchitas column talks about the rumors that El Fantasma might be removed from his Mexico City Lucha Libre commissioner role he’s had for 20 years. There hasn’t really been a candidate to replace him until now: Villano V/Ray Mendoza Jr. is said to be interested in the job. I’m unsure if a guy who lost so much money on his retirement show that he had to unretire is a great choice. The article mentions the job pays “less than 10,000 Mexican Pesos a month” (less than 500 USD.)

On his podcast, Petey Williams mentioned Impact will be returning to Mexico in January. It looks like late January judging from the schedule. It’s a little surprise; the first show they ran in Mexico seemed to draw fine, but the second night was a struggle. They probably won’t be going against a big CMLL show this time, so that’ll help a lot. AAA has run Guerra de Titanes near the end of January in Mexico City the last two years, and it’s possible Impact & AAA could combine those events on one weekend.

Arena Guatemala Mexico’s show is airing Saturdays at 8 pm on Canal + Guatemala. Local wrestling TV shows are a rarity lately. Maybe I’ll try to record this.

El Matematico and referee El Godro will be honored at a show in Xochimilco this Sunday.

The documentary on Casandro is airing in Japan on 11/23.
