What happened:

Aerostar doing a Aerostar dive

LA Park has decided he and Fantasma are great friends and demanded a mask match with Psycho Clown right now. He did not get it right now. Psycho Clown and Park argued, the whistle sounded, Park shoved Psycho and Fantasma kicked Parka right in the face. Fantasma explained to Psycho that they should beat up Park together. They stuck together until Park made a comeback. A very LA Park finish saw Fantasma tossed onto Copetes as he was counting a pin, LA Park unmask Psycho Clown, and Fantamsa fouled Park. Copetes reacted in time to count that pin. Rey Escorpion and Texano walked out to beat up Park & Psycho, but they were already pretty well beat up.

Wagner wrestles in a La Parka outfit to taunt Jarrett, I guess. Kross is wrestling in MMA shorts for some reason. Jarrett uses a blade, and Wagner bleeds a scary amount.

Belial dive

Máximo makes a really ill -considered attempt to attack Rey Escorpión & Texano post-match. He gets hit in the head with a chair and bleeds. Mamba tries to make the save. It goes no better. Los Mercenarios get their belts, Máximo makes his own comeback, and the rudos foul him.

Dr. Wagner came to the ring for a promo midway thru the show, wanting to take Jeff Jarrett’s hair for all the Mexicans he’s insulted. Jarrett & Hijo del Fantasma interrupt. Fantasma says Wagner is dumb for not being able to challenge Jarrett in English, and Jarrett says “basura.” Wagner challenges Jarrett to his face and they play the music. Fantasma stops the music so he can trash Wagner too.

Faby Apache is wearing a headscarf, which makes it look like Mary Apache has lost a lot of weight at first glance.

Match goes about 3 minutes before Shani pulls the covering off Faby’s head to exposed her shaved head. Faby goes down to cover up, Tirantes checks on her, and Taurus runs in. Shani is ready for him this time and takes him out with an armdrag and a dropkick, but Faby attacks her from behind. Taurus tripped up Shani about five minutes later and Faby got the win, then the rudos unmasked Shani after the fact.

Thoughts:

LA Park spear

Sometimes I think LA Park is meant to be a rudo in AAA. This was a time where he was the sympathetic outnumbered técnico for about eight minutes. That was a long time that didn’t amount to much, except the time I won’t have back. Making LA Park the hero was probably the correct plan, the Monterrey fans were anti-Psycho Clown from the start, but the match got much more interesting from the moment they went to everyone battling among themselves, and it would’ve been nice if that section got more of the time. Psycho Clown seems like he’s lost weight and got in better shape underneath the ever present t-shirt, and I think he’s moving around the ring better too. The little bit he did with Fantamsa here had more promise for a singles match then I would’ve thought otherwise.

The semi-main is worth watching only if you’re into seeing Dr. Wagner Jr. bleed buckets. It’s a walk and brawl and bleeds with him and Jarrett, with the other four getting little attention and contributing little more. Jarrett spends the first half of the match ducking out of every confrontation, so it’s not like he’s really doing all that much either. Kross suplexing Murder Clown after the match was more than he got in the match. Taurus did no better. The only reason this existed was to build Jarrett/Wagner for some unclear date, and so it could’ve happily ended when both Jarrett & Kross had Wagner in a submission hold at the same time. It instead drifted on for a long time after, just for the required but mostly pointless comeback. The actual finish, Wagner had no idea how to take the Stroke on the first try and Jarrett just doing it again, was not really worth the effort of extended the match so far.

don’t get a stuck in a corner with Poder del Norte

The four-way tag match was all action on a show of all action matches, but the action was pretty good. Rey Escorpión & Texano got to do a straight tag match for what feels like the first time in a while, meshing well with the técnico sides. Nine minutes isn’t a lot for a four-way match, so this wasn’t Aerostar & Drago doing as much as they’ve done recently, but Aerostar still got to dive into the third row. Jack was very good at being annoying. Teddy is the right guy to be taking the pins at this point. The post-match went on far too long, the usual bit of doing many things when just one would’ve had impact.

The Poder del Norte match was good at points. Hijo del Vikingo looked absolutely brilliant, the kind of state of the art flyer that you kind of hope gets out of AAA and to some place that might do a bit more focused job of making him a star. Instead, this goes near 13 minutes to end with Hijo de LA Park turning on Vikingo for no reason. It would’ve been too long even without the turn, and it’s a lot of wasted time to get that point. Poder del Norte is at the best steamrolling teams, but this was too long for a stream roll or a match with a nonsensical team.

tricky cradle

The Faby/Shani match was surprisingly cold once Faby’s head got exposed. The action in the ring was missing something as well, there wasn’t the spark there’s been there before. They were giving a good effort, and the moves were alright, but it didn’t seem to be headed to anywhere except killing time before the interference finish. Shani never seemed that close to winning, and Faby using the Devil’s Wings just didn’t feel like a big deal.

People seemed to be, if not down then not really enthused with the opener when it came up earlier. There is definitely a layout issue with it, in that there’s no layout and it’s just four guys doing spots until they’ve done all the spots. Outside of maybe Arkangel Divino & Hijo del Vikingo, AAA’s not doing anything to get these lower level guys over as individuals and it makes it more incumbent on them to do something to get over. That’s turned into everyone doing a lot of big moves, but it’s not always working – it didn’t really work here. It seems like it would’ve been easy to do something around normal partners Belial & Arez working together for most of the match, but telling those sorts of stories isn’t something most guys in Mexico even think about it, much less execute. Anyway, that’s a lot of words to say this match felt same-ish to a lot of other actions matches, but I still really liked the action. The wacky cradle battle to start the match felt like it came at the wrong time, but there sure were some wacky cradles. Belial did both his indian deathlock/bridging back suplex spot and his low tope spot, and that’s what I want in every Belial match. (I could’ve used some more selling.) Ultimo Maldito is better as a solo act than his brother and looked sharp with this Mexico crew. Draztick Boy’s run at the end was well done and his win came as a surprise. His blockbuster dive with Arez was the spot of the mathc in a match of spots.

CMLL Aniversario, Impact, Expo Museo Lucha Libre

Today is CMLL’s Aniversario show. You can watch it on Honor Club or internet.TV. The show should be good, even if it’s not the Aniversario show expected. Expectations for the show have been lowered so much that it could easily be a pleasant surprise.

I wrote a long preview over at Voices of Wrestling. I’m still expecting Rush & Cavernario to win, and the Guerreros to retain the trios titles. It’s worth noting that today’s WON seems to be hinting at a Volador/Taven win, which surprises me.

Volador says Rush isn’t half as good as La Sombra. Ultimo Guerrero is sure he’s keeping the trios titles. Lucha Central has a preview of the show.

Impact taped last night in Mexico City. I have results here, and some of your favorite bootleggers already have video up on YouTube. Attendance was said to be not good but they moved people around to make it look good – which is really no different than many Impact tapings. Today’s taping might be even more of a struggle; if you’re interested in going to a lucha libre show in Mexico City today that’s not the CMLL show, you probably just have to hang around outside Fronton Mexico long enough and you might get a free ticket.

AAA wrestlers were used at the show, though some of the names you might expect were working a show scheduled for Guanajuato last night. (Though some people were been pulled from that show.) Two Llave de la Gloria level trios matches were taped for Impact’s Xplosion show, and sound like they were among the best things on the show. Jose Manuel Guillen worked as an announcer. Faby Apache got a storyline. The Lucha Brothers had two matches on the taping, which perhaps will be split over two episodes so they won’t be needed for today’s taping. La Parka answered an open challenge. La Parka was obviously a terrible fit. Besides the entire issue of wrestling, the people who are going to an Impact taping are the least likely to like AAA’s La Parka, so he was booed noticeably and fans changed for LA Park. (Parka blamed it on it being Impact fans.) Still, he and AAA get to brag that an international promotion used La Parka on their TV and hope everyone forgets the details. That’s really the motivation for everyone to be on this show.

The Gladiatores has interviews with Faby Apache and Puma King.

Not sure who will end up working the tapings today, but this Keyra twitter post seems like a tease of her being there. There were a lot of indie people around last night, and not all got used.

The Expo Museo Lucha Libre opens today. Saturday night is the night with the wrestling show (at 5pm), but today is the Rey Mysterio Jr. & Mil Mascaras autograph signing. I think it might be the biggest day of the weekend for them. Whoever planned this did a great job of putting it on the right weekend.

Today’s also the first night of PWG’s Battle of Los Angeles. I’ll be there. Lucha related matches tonight include Adam Brooks vs Rey Horus, Flamita vs Puma King, and Bandido vs T-Hawk.

LuFisto and Crazy Boy/DTU had a bad falling out, which LuFisto took to social media saying that she never got paid for her matches on this trip. They agree only on the LuFisto left the tour before working the last show. LuFisto says she was concerned about missing an important show this weekend and was contacted by United that she may need to change her flights due to the hurricane hitting the east coast of the US. DTU says LuFisto contacted United herself to get her flights changed to leave early. DTU was going to use the money owed to LuFisto to pay for the new flight. When the new flight didn’t cost extra, DTU decided to keep the money, justifying it as a co-promoter pulling out of that last show in Guadalajara and DTU losing money in the process. LuFisto also says she was told she asked not to wrestle any extreme matches and was told she wouldn’t be, then ended up in one in Hidalgo. She and her friends are now telling Americans not to work for DTU going forward.

It’s notable that the advertised DTU main event in Guadalajara was LuFisto vs Chik Tormenta. LuFisto didn’t work the show, but it doesn’t look like Tormenta was going to either. She was on those Impact tapings instead last night.

LuchaWorld had the latest Lucha Report.

Puma King and Barby told a story instead of cutting up a video this week. They’re a bit busy.

great match roundup, week of 2018-08-25

he’s going to feel this forever so I might as well keep using the GIF

this week’s shows

I think I might have rated too many TripleMania matches the same. The opener was different than the cruiserweight match, which was different from the main event. And the mixed tag was better than all of them. This is maybe why people use stars.

I really liked the ladder match. Mephisto/Titan did more for me than the four way mask match but style preferences may differ.
