Developments

all code red

Fenix is back, but he’s not Fenix. The episode title is a nod to a 1989 movie with a similar plot: Fenix has returned to life in an eviler version of himself. He’s not quite one of the murderous characters from that movie, but he does kill his team’s chances of winning the trios championship. Fenix seems particularly upset towards the people who brought him back. Aerostar receives a surprise superkick and the valagueza into a powerbomb that Striker is (also) calling the Fire Driver to set up the loss. Melissa simply is shoved down, though that angers the fans much more. Dragon Azteca Jr. quickly swoops in to take Melissa to safety while Fenix lurches off.

That’s a match coming down the road, though there’s a lot of matches being set up this week. Jake Strong appears before the match to challenge Fenix, Aerostar, and Drago to a 1 v 3 match should they win the titles. They didn’t, but that issue isn’t done. Earlier, Ivelisse tried and failed to win the Gift of the Gods title from Azteca. She still did well enough for XO Lishius to invite her to join a trio with Joey Ryan. That new odd threesome threw out their own challenge for the trios championship.

Finally, King Cuerno was looking for a path to get the match against Pentagon Dark he set up last week. Antonio Cueto appeared ringside to offer him a #1 contenders match. The good news for Cuerno is this was a rare Antonio Cueto in-arena visit which didn’t lead to a Matanza appearance. The bad news is Cuerno got Mil Muertes instead, and the two brawled their way into knocking the referee going down for a draw. Cueto pulled a move from WWE, and made a three-way title match for next week.

There’s one match that wasn’t totally clear. The show ended with the overdue return of Marty the Moth. He visited Antonio, dropping bills on his desk to ask for a Gift of the Gods shot. It was the same amount Mariposa had asked, and Antonio agreed to it. Marty then produced more money for Antonio for one more thing – and that’s where the show ended.

Thoughts

Dragon Azteca Jr. is definitely the luchador most likely to be angry at me if we ever meet in real life

A decent episode. It couldn’t live up to it’s match quality possibilities because two of the matches were compromised by the storylines they needed to set up, but at least there’s a clear match they’re setting from those finishes and those matches will probably be good. If you squint right, you can start to see some Ultima Lucha programs being set up; they’re only 6 more episodes away.

Dragon Azteca and Ivelisse was the only match to get a normal finish, and they built some good drama to that finish. The dive into the rail was a surprise was of setting up some big near falls, and Ivelisse’s Code Red (perfect name with her new look) and the DDT earlier looked great. It was strange to see Azteca win with a legdrop he’s never won before, but it didn’t take away from the match. The fans didn’t seem as in to Ivelisse as they’ve been in the past. They were quiet in general on the show, but it was a sign about how much momentum the injuries have cost her.

this is an easy dive for Aerostar

Didn’t like the Muertes/Cuerno match as much, because it was such a weak out in a promotion where a lot has been let go lately. Marty is the toughest referee to recover so quickly from being knocked down by both men; normally there’d be time for a second referee to show up. What they did was to push the idea of them being equal, which meant just a lot of standing and trading punches in practice. Hopefully, there can be more variety next week.

The trios title match was a good as long it lasted. Kobra Moon sat most of the match out, but her teammates worked well as bases and opponents for the flying challengers. Drago looked great. I had forgotten how good Fenix and Daga were together, as they haven’t had a chance to face each other much even when being in the same places the last couple of years. Fenix played his new character well, doing enough to establish his character and not be all slow pauses while making it abundantly clear that he’s a different guy. I don’t know if turning one of the most popular characters on the show evil is really in the best interest of the show, but I’ll give it a little bit of rope to see if they’re working on a long-term reversal. The match with Dragon Azteca/Fenix should be good. Most of the matches they’re setting up here should be better the matches then they’re doing here.

great match roundup, week of 2018-08-18

good clean fun

this week’s shows

The upside in doing this is I found out I never posted the 08/18 AAA recap. I went to link to it and realized I wrote it three weeks and never got around to posting it. You probably don’t need to go back three weeks to watch that AAA TV taping, but it’ll be a decent watch when it turns up on YouTube. You should watch Pentagon Dark & Cage.

The MOTYC list is finally updated.

straight falls, Cavernario fouling Volador.

Cavernario’s post-match promo was about how this outcome didn’t matter, which sure seemed to be true. CMLL led into the Anniversario with a diaster show. The stream was not running for the first match, then died for about half of the main event. In theory, CMLL has a full copy of this show that they could upload at any time. It’s never going to be uploaded and that’s probably fine. People on the show seemed more interested in getting done so they could watch the US/Mexico futbol game. That’s probably why the second match was what it was. Do not watch. (I’ll probably watch.)

+LuchaTV interviews Barbaro Cavernario about the Anniversario main event.

Javier Cardoso, who runs the lucha libre coverage for Marca, says Marca is not airing the show this week. CMLL has said nothing other than re-tweeting a ROH post mentioning they’ll be airing the show. That might mean the biggest show of CMLL’s year will only air on an English language streaming service. That’s strange but right for CMLL, who is probably much more concerned about convincing people to fill in the cheap seats at the arena than selling the show to people who aren’t in the area. The problem is, CMLL isn’t just saying “it’s not streaming”, so most everyone will go to Marca’s Facebook and website and CMLL’s YouTube expecting to see it on Friday, instead of buying the tickets as CMLL would like.

That’s the main event result that you’d expect. They made sure not to pin Taven in the third fall of the semimain.

Zeuxis’ first-round match in the Mae Young Classic airs tonight on WWE Network.

CMLL looks back at Matt Taven winning the NWA Welterweight Championship and Negro Casas vs La Fiera.

Decent turnout for a DTU show, which might turn up on Powerbomb at some point. I didn’t realize Masashi Takeda was missing the entire tour. That appears to be the case. He apologized for it on Twitter and is already back in Japan. At a press show press conference, Crazy Boy blames on the planes. They had a flight for Takeda to come to Mexico but had issues with his flight back to Japan and Takeda had an important show in Japan that he couldn’t risk missing. Meanwhile, this seems like the second straight DTU tour that Mary Apache has been advertised for and not appeared.

Lucha Underground 4×14 is named “Pet Cemetery”

The preview mentions King Cuerno and someone else aiming for a shot at Pentagon Dark’s title.

SuperLuchas points to a Twitter account in Mr. Niebla’s name that’s apologizing for his most recent mishap. I don’t know if it’s really him. There’s been a story going around for a week or so that Mr. Niebla had his license suspended. I haven’t mentioned here because the original source doesn’t have a track record of breaking news and it seemed like they just repeated the Black Skeller story but put Mr. Niebla’s name in his place. And, as happened with Black Skeller, having his license suspended/retired/whatever had no impact on his ability to wrestle matches. Everything still suggests Mr. Niebla will be back in CMLL as soon as CMLL decided his time out is over.

The grand opening of Talavision’s Arena Mexico store was scheduled for Friday but is canceled. They say it was for reasons outside of their control. The scheduled Penta & Fenix autograph signing will still happen but instead at their main store.

Voices of Wrestling has a review of The Crash show from Saturday from someone who was there.

GALLI announced their last show in Arena GALLI on 09/23 will be their first show airing on Powerbomb.TV. It’ll also have Fenix putting his AAA Megachampion title on the line against Aeroboy and the GALLI championship. I believe in Aero Boy but maybe not AAA Megachampion levels.

Fuerza Guerrera promotes his 09/30 Anniversario show.

Lucha Memes has the Coliseo Coacalco 21st anniversary show on 10/21:

Tyson La Bestia talks about getting into lucha libre, is proud of how far he’s gotten in just three years. The STFRM initials that both he and his girlfriend Marcela wear on their gear is apparently the union that represents railroad workers in Mexico. Tyson is part of that in his other life.

Lineups

CMLL (MON) 09/17/2018 Arena Puebla

5) Hijo de LA Park, LA Park, Último Guerrero vs Cavernario, La Bestia Del Ring, Rush

LA Park and son make their way to Arena Puebla, where the Rush/UG feud will not die.

The Crash (FRI) 09/21/2018 Auditorio de Tijuana, Tijuana, Baja California
1) Star Boy, Viento, Zarco vs Animal, Demencia, Silver Star
2) Kody Lane, Tessa Blanchard, Torito Negro vs B-Boy, Lil Cholo, Miranda Alize
3) Soberano Jr. vs ACH
4) El Bandido, Flamita, Rey Horus vs Ángel de Oro, Niebla Roja, Templario (CMLL)
5) Carístico & Penta Zero M vs Daga & Volador Jr.
6) Gilbert el Boricua vs Mecha Wolf 450

Quick follow up show follows up on Daga’s turn. What would they have done if Daga hadn’t needed to replace Fenix? Soberano/ACH is a unique first-time match and the fourth match jumps out – I want Bandido versus Templario in the UG trainee battle. This show should air live on Facebook.

AAA TV (SUN) 09/30/2018 Plaza de Toros San Miguel, Uriangato, Guanajuato
1) Dinastía, Drastik Boy, Hijo Del Vikingo vs Australian Suicide, King Balam, Villano III Jr.
2) Angelikal, Lady Shani, Niño Hamburguesa vs Arez, Lady Maravilla, Parka Negra
3) Aerostar & Drago vs Golden Magic & Puma King
4) La Parka & Murder Clown vs Monsther Clown & Taurus
5) La Máscara, Rey Escorpión, Texano Jr. vs Mamba, Máximo, Pimpinela Escarlata
6) Dr. Wagner Jr. & Psycho Clown vs Hijo del Fantasma & Jeff Jarrett

This appears to be the next AAA TV taping – nothing else has been mentioned so far, so the weekly TV tapings may mysterious disappear as quickly as they appear. Uriangato is not exactly an AAA taping hub; this is the first & only taping I can find there, though records may not be complete. Whenever AAA tapes someplace odd, that usually means a civil authority bought a show as part of a fair, and a fair is running from the 22nd to the 30th here.

Main event sets up Jarrett & Wagner again. La Mascara & Maximo continue feuding in the semi-main. Monsther Clown hasn’t been seen since Murder Clown sudden turn on 08/02. There were rumors he was written out due to injury, but he’s worked some spot shows since.

Aerostar/Drago vs Golden Magic/Puma should be good. So should really that first half of the card, though Nino Hamburguesa doesn’t quite fit in with the direction of the matches. Nice to see Villano III back in matches. A King Balam is a regular in Satillo. He’s not the first; a member of the Ibarra (Park/Volador) family appeared under that name appeared in AAA way back in 1994 and 95, which means there’s a good chance this is that guy’s son.

RWC , LyC , KAOZ (SUN) 10/14/2018 Arena Coliseo Monterrey
1) Silver Tiger vs Imposible
2) Babe Fox & Baby Xtreme vs El Komander & Obsesión
3) Jack Evans vs Epydemius
4) Puma King vs El DivoGolden Magic
5) Emperador Azteca (IWRG) vs The Tiger
6) Satánico vs Difunto I
7) Head Hunter vs Azteca Warrior
8) LA Park vs Rush [super libre]

I have no idea what RWC stands for and I’m not sure if I should care about a new group of initials running the same basic group of people in Monterrey who will probably disappear or overhaul everything in 3-4 shows. The news, such as it is, is Llaves y Candados seems to have stepped into to Zorro void with Kaoz Promotions. LA Park/Rush is happening again.

What happened:

Titan beating Mephisto set up a title match.

Villano III was honored after the third match. The fourth match has no entrances. Dragon Rojo brings his gun anyway. He blasts it after everyone’s introduced, frightening everyone in the ring.

Thoughts:

good work everyone

Everything on this show – at least the matches I bothered to watch – was fine if not spectacular. This was probably slightly the best, though it had its own slight falls. Atlantis can only wrestle one match, and he’s wrestling it a lot. Soberano got lost badly in the third fall, but the rudos worked better to get him on track than those in the second match with something similar happened. The NGD otherwise were doing their B match, and they did it fine enough for a Tuesday.

Titan/Mephisto should be good but some of the other people in the semi-main should be good, but the trios match wasn’t really. The tecnicos were fine, but Ephesto & Luciferno had some painfully bad moments. There’s some record low efforts on dive catches in the fall for the rudos. It was like their arms weren’t working. It was amazing the tecnicos went for the second round of dives, but at least it went better.

The fourth match didn’t interest me a lot early, but it did pick up a lot in the long third fall. It’s one of those matches where just one fall could’ve been plenty because there wasn’t much you had to see from the first couple. Cometa looked good, and I liked Dragon Rojo being sneaky and ready to finish off Bleu Panther at the end.

The women’s lightning match was one of those low ceiling/high floor matches that seem to be done in the lesser divisions. Everything was ok and nothing went wrong, but that’s mostly because Jarochita didn’t try anything difficult. That match was successful if not interesting. It’s good to give Jarochita chances, but I’m not sure if this really counted as one.
