lucha TV preview for weekend of August 16th, 2018

full size

AAA is streaming on Saturdays the next two weeks. This week is a 6pm start, that I keep thinking is an 8pm. That would be a bad mistake to make because the first half of the card looks pretty good. Note the episode on Space is the last new episode that’ll air on either network before TripleMania; I guess Faby & Shani bleeding again is a decent go home match.

Lucha Underground also promises a Taya bridal show and Ricky Mundo & Rosa being involved.

Noted policeman Police Man is on this week’s Puebla show.

everything Twitter people are going to ask me about Okada wrestling in CMLL on Friday answered in a link no one asking will actually click

balloon enthusiast Kazuchika Okada

I enjoy NJPW wrestler Kazuchika Okada and I’ve heard he’s wrestling in CMLL. When is this happening?

Okada will wrestle in CMLL on Friday, August 17th. The show he’s on starts at 8:30 pm Central Daylight Time. That’s 2:30 AM Saturday morning in London, and 10:30 AM Saturday morning in Tokyo. You can find your time here.

Okada is the fifth match (of six) on the show. It’ll take around about 90 minutes into the show, but it can vary a little bit.

How can I watch Okada live?

Media company Marca has the live streaming rights to Friday CMLL shows, and broadcasts them two ways:

Both are the same exact video. The Facebook stream is usually the smoother one. All of this is free.

In the recent past, one or both of these streams have been blocked outside of Mexico. There are also some people who have trouble getting these sites to work. As community service, I’ve often been also streaming the show on YouTube. I will likely stream this show as well.

Help! I can’t watch live! How can I watch the Okada action later?

You have plenty of options.

  • All CMLL Friday night shows are also available on CMLL’s YouTube channel later that night. They’re usually by an hour after the show concludes. Just look for the most recent video which says “Lucha Libre Viernes” and you’re good. I might have even posted a comment about when Okada’s match starts.
  • Matches from this show will air on Azteca America in the US on August 26th on the “Lucha Azteca” show. The matches picked for the show appear to be near random, but there’s a good shot Okada will air.
  • if you want to watch Okada only on NJPW World, it’ll probably be added to the service in the upcoming weeks and be available for all viewers (except in Mexico.) My guess is it will be the August 29th CMLL show listed on the schedule, but I don’t have that confirmed.

There will also be a dozen different pirated version of the match on YouTube because that’s how Mexican wrestling works.

Who is in match Okada’s match? I’m seeing two slightly different ones.

Okada’s match changed during the week, due to a scheduling snafu that didn’t have anything to do with him. Okada will team with Ultimo Guerrero and Negro Casas to face Mistico, Diamante Azul, and Valiente.

Is this the Mistico that was in WWE?

No! This is the one who’s in the main events on FantasticaMania every year.

Let’s say I skip FantasticaMania every year. Which Mistico is this again?

He is Rush & Dragon Lee’s brother. He’s the middle child of those kids.

I haven’t seen Valiente in a long time! Still fat?

No. He converted all the fat to muscles. It’s a little confusing.

I remember seeing Diamante Azul in a World Tag League. Is he good now?

Nope.

Is there any storyline to this match I need to know to appreciate?

No. Okada is a rudo in the match but that’s about it.

Why CMLL put Okada, the best wrestler in the world, in the semi-main and not the main event?

There are a lot of options here too!

1) It’s a priority issue. The main event is a rematch from last week which will build to next week. It also may be a set up to the main event for CMLL’s biggest show of the year. Okada is probably here this week and not coming back, so they’re focusing more on people who will be back.

2) CMLL matchmakers largely live in their own bubble and do not pay attention to wrestling outside of it. (CMLL matchmakers often don’t even seem to be paying attention to CMLL.) This is common among people who are in charge of making matches for wrestling shows and means they see Okada as a foreign star to include but not a big star who needs to be in the main event.

3) NJPW has a fervent but small fanbase in Mexico. Past NJPW visits have not appeared to be big deals to the CMLL fanbase at large. It’s unclear how many people are actually going to be coming just to see Okada.

4) Negro Casas & Ultimo Guerrero likely wanted to team with Okada, and wouldn’t be able to if he’s in the main event.

5) There’s a less pressure on Okada to do as much in the semi-main.

Isn’t it horrible that Bestia del Ring, a very bad wrestler, is in the main event instead of the best wrestler in the world?

Bestia is not good. I would like to see Okada in the main event instead of him. But, just about every week, there’s someone I would rather see than Bestia del Ring. This is a not a one week issue.

Why didn’t CMLL put Okada in a 1v1 match with Hechicero or Soberano or Titan or Rush or Volador or [insert name here] instead of a trios match? What do you think this match will be like?

Okada has just finished a G1 tournament of tough singles matches. The last thing he probably wants to do now is a showcase singles match. I’m sure NJPW made that known if CMLL even cared to ask. Okada’s not even specifically in Mexico to work for CMLL. He’s in Mexico for other reasons and is working a CMLL show while he happens to be here.

This match will be similar to Okada’s tag matches in ROH, or in the middle of the tour in NJPW, or on that FantasticaMania tour. It’ll be nice, it’ll be a pleasant use of ten to fifteen minutes, somewhere around ***1/4, and not super memorable outside the novelty of Okada playing luchador for a night. It’s not intended to be a big deal. It’s definitely not something worth a 1000 word long blog post but sometimes you’ve got to give the people what they want.

While I’ve got you here, what’s the CMLL Aniversario main event?

no more questions!

great match roundup, week of 2018-08-04

Iron Kid is very good

this week’s recaps

AAA was the best show of the week and the only show I didn’t watch live. (I think I might not be watching this week’s show live either.) It’s tougher to recommend AAA shows just because it’ll be a long time not subscribing to Twitch to see them – there’s not even a strong pirating scene on the right now – but at least I’ll remember to mention them again when they air in a month.

I don’t know what I should call the Friday show since it’s not really on Claro any more, because Claro’s not a thing. But it’s still the same show.

AAA Megachampion match announced, AAA TV, DTU, Vulcano

7) Crazy King © b Nick GageJimmy Lloyd [DTU]
money thrown in. Referee may have helped Crazy win.

Seems like a decently attended show. I don’t spot any particular cameras at this taping but it figured to be the one show most likely to turn up on Powerbomb.

IWRG tonight has Penta vs Rush vs Caristico. This would be a good night to stream the show, like two different people were doing before. I have no idea if that’s happening.

AAA TripleMania on 08/25 is now up to three (3) matches, nine day away

  • Psycho Clown vs Hijo del Fantasma vs LA Park vs Pentagon Jr. in a four way mask match
  • Lady Shani vs Faby Apache in a mask versus hair match
  • Jeff Jarrett (c) vs Brian Cage vs Rich Swann vs Fenix for the AAA Heavyweight Championship

When Fenix earned a shot at Jeff Jarrett back in Aguscalientes, it was certainly presented as if it was going to be a singles match. Cage & Swann are added with no explanation. Cage was at least around as part of MAD (& maybe Elite) on the AAA/ELITE show, though it’s not exceptionally clear why he’d be challenging his ally for the title. Swann has not existed before in AAA.

The reality is Jeff Jarrett versus Fenix would’ve been bad (Jeff Jarrett versus anyone would’ve been bad) and so Jeff Jarrett is going to stall outside for 90% of the match while the other three do highspots, and then maybe try to steal a pin. This is perhaps the problem with having Jeff Jarrett as your champion in 2018. Current Konnan AAA is going to go for “good match” over “makes any sense”. It’d be nice if AAA could have both, but it is an improvement from the Vampiro era of bad matches that didn’t make any sense. I don’t know if we’ll get the rest of the card before the TripleMania press conference next Tuesday.

Something else I don’t know what’s happening with is AAA’s TV plans. They’re still on Televisa. They may go off Televisa at some point in the intermediate future, but AAA’s shows are airing on both Space and Televisa and there’s no solid indication either are about to change. Space is still getting the episodes 1 week earlier (and with a different announce crew) than Televisa, and only 1 new episode is airing week. AAA is currently taping 2 TV episodes a week and airing 1 episode of a week. Neither of those things seems to be changing, despite them not making sense together. Here is the upcoming airing schedule on Televisa & YouTube, the places were most people who watch AAA will actually see the show.

  • taped 07/21 Mexico City will air 08/11 & 08/18
(LA Park’s return to AAA will not air until one week before TripleMania)
  • taped 07/29 Ecatepec will air 08/25 & 09/01
(Hijo del Fantasma’s rudo turn will not air until the day of TripleMania, or a week after)
  • taped 08/02 Aguascalientes will air 09/08 & 09/15
(Fenix earning his TripleMania title match will not air until three weeks after TripleMania)
  • taped 08/10 Veracruz will air 09/22 & 09/29
  • taped 08/18 Chalco will air 10/06 & 10/13
  • taped 08/25 Mexico City/TripleMania will air 10/20 & 10/27 (and also maybe live)
  • taped 09/02 Monterrey will air 11/03 & 11/10
  • taped 09/07 Cancun will air 11/17 & 11/24
  • taped 09/09 Merida will air 12/01 & 12/08
  • taped 10/03 SLP? will air 12/15 & 12/22
  • and that’s probably it for the year! 12/29 & 01/05 & 01/12 are usually recap shows.

(If you are a person who gets Space, subtract one week.)

That means, as it stands right now, Heroes Inmortales and anything else taped in the last three months of 2018 will not air 2019. Maybe well into 2019. AAA, by their own volition, has put themselves in a place where they can not really use their own TV show to build up stories, because their TV is so far behind the shows they’re trying to promote. They may have realized this and decided to do less things on these tapings and at a slower pace because it takes so long to get seen, but it doesn’t explain why they didn’t chance course and cut back these shows.

Something’s gone wrong, something was supposed to change and did not, and they’re still running as if they expect that change to happen. It’s the weirdest thing. If you are a lucha libre fan who likes to watch all you can, this is a good situation with AAA streaming a whole bunch of matches they do not seem to need to run and giving more people chances to be seen. This seems like a big issue in the long run. Maybe that TripleMania press conference happens and AAA announced Space is doubling the length of their show going forward and it all makes sense – it has to be something like that for any of this make sense.

Yesterday’s CMLL Informa introduced the sensation new character find of 2018 (maybe): Vulcano. Vulcano is Kraneo’s new ally in the Gorillas del Ring group he’s putting together. Vulcano explained he’s a fan of firefighters, likes to visit fire stations and watch documentaries, so he’s wearing a fireman themed outfit to honor them. Bombero is the usually Spanish word for firefighter, so it’s unclear why he ended up named Vulcano instead. (Edit: apparently, the firefighter chief is called Jefe Vulcano)

Long time lucha libre fans remember that Vulcano was a well working midcard rudo, one-third of Los Destructores with Tony Arce and Rocco Valente. Vulcano hasn’t been active in lucha libre since 2000 (at least under that name), and I’m not sure where he is now. Other people have used the Vulcano name since – there’s one around Tijuana who worked the last EMW show – and there people upset that CMLL is once again taking a name from the past and reusing it. My guess is this Vulcano is actually Warrior Steel Jr., as the size matches up and there’s not that many other guys that size around CMLL.

ESPN has one of what seems like a monthly profile piece on a CMLL wrestler, this time on Audaz. Audaz was both a luchador and a soccer player, a defender for the LigaMX (and since defunct) Jaguars de Chiapas when his father told him to pick one or the other. Audaz picked lucha lire and is very happy with his choice, though his family originally didn’t like the idea of him going to Mexico City to learn and thought he’d get mixed up in drugs and alcohol. He credits Arkangel, Ultimo Guerrero, and Virus as his CMLL trainees and started sketching out ideas for moves in a notebook. Aerostar has talked about (and occasionally posted on twitter) a secret list of ideas he has for offense. That seemed like it was a text list, while Audaz is said to have actually drawn the ring and his movements in it to work out what he could try next. Audaz says she’s received called from the US, Japan, and Central America to wrestle there, but wants to stay loyal to CMLL for giving him this chance.

Penta says he wants to destroy the fake illusion of Psycho Clown, calling him just a creation of AAA. He’s happy to be on both TripleMania & Anniversario, and has no idea what match will be on CMLL’s show.

Escape Viajeros’s Instagram says this year’s Ring & Rockstars trip will happen September 7 to the 9th. That’s the weekend with the Cancun & Merida TV tapings, so it fits. AAA usually pushes this vacation trip big. They haven’t mentioned it yet this year.

Lucha Talk has a new episode up.

Valiente & Pantera Blanca Jr. are wrestling in Victoria, Texas this Saturday.

What happened:

Stuka beat Hechicero to set up a title match next week. This time for sure.

Thoughts:

nope

This show was full with matches where the crowd reacted nicely and I had a hard time caring. This particular match was a safe build to next week’s title match, with Stuka getting his tights ripped up but coming back to win anyway. They didn’t work against each other as much as normal for that situation. Angel de Oro & Hechicero worked the torture rack escape armdrag they failed at last time I saw them together, so that’s good.

Audaz & Luciferno essentially tried for the Dragon Lee & Luciferno tournament match in the lightning match. The difference is Audaz doesn’t have as deadly offense as Dragon Lee does yet, and they’re not ready to give Audaz this win yet. The general principle of the old bumping rudo making the young guy look good was there, though there are moments where it’s clear Luciferno would’ve been better at this a couple years ago. Audaz pulling him off the top rope with a headscissors didn’t quite go smoothly, and he stayed away from the fancier spots in this one. It’s still a good opponent for Audaz on the way up, a match-up worth going back to later even if this wasn’t a superb match on its own.

neat double underhook backbreaker

Trios was a simple Panther match, with a surprise submission finish and the crowd reacting to the older Panther’s every move. I’m not sure this would work as well if he was still masked: every tourist understanding that there’s an older man in this fight makes a difference and lets them get more out of little bits. This wasn’t really all that much.

The opener gets off early by not being interesting enough to bother with a negative rating. The segunda too. They were both poor but no one cares.
