What happened:

whoops

The main event set up a tag title match the following week.

The micros had a one fall match. Atomo & Guapito worked as the rudos in this match between four micros who aren’t working as mascots.

Thoughts:

Ultimo Gallito

The tercera didn’t fire on all cylinders. Templario screwed up a trip spot early, then totally lost on a torito later. In between, he mostly just put a hand on his head on shock over what had just happened repeatedly. Maya had two dives where he seemed to stop flying at the point of impact, and the impact itself wasn’t all that much. Fuego was very popular, but everyone involved has had better matches.

The Micros match showed they’re going to have trouble having good matches in this concept without the principal people involved. The crowd was the match and rooted for Gallito, but the action was a lot shakier than the previous micro matches. MicroAngel seems to get lost at times and was clumsy at other times. He may turn out fine. For now, he seems like a guy rushed to the ring because they needed one more people. Guapito looked rough too. It really didn’t matter to this crowd how good the match was, and maybe it’s just going to need CMLL picking their spots well.

The crowd reacted huge to Ares and Asturiano exchanging simple chops. It makes me wonder how they would’ve gone if there were a lot of energy in the match. Millenium did a few impressive things, but there wasn’t a lot around them. These rudos will go with those moves but aren’t interesting on their own.

this didn’t seem like it was meant to be a slam

Lucha Memes in Coacalco, IWRG, Puebla preview

Lucha Memes (SUN) 05/13/2018 Coliseo Coacalco, Coacalco, Estado de México [+LuchaTV, Black Terry Jr. (Flickr)MedioTiempoR de Rudo]
1) Avisman b Eragón
2) Ángel o Demonio & Ovett b Alas de Acero & Iron Kid
goodmatch
3) Fresero Jr. & Mr. Iguana b Arez & Low Rider
Low Rider took a bump off the canvas roof, and was hurt.
4) Último Gladiador b Aramis
good match
5) Corsario Negro & Drako b Aeroboy & Demasiado
good match
6) Romano García b Keyra
7) Virus b Súper Crazy

I think the idea of the Low Rider bump was he was going to fall off the low roof onto chairs. He totally missed the chairs. I’m not sure the chairs would’ve helped. Low Rider is crazy, hope he’s OK.

Show sounds good but there wasn’t one singular match people were raving about after. With everything going on around Iguana and Memes and vetos, I was surprised to see him win on this show.

IWRG (SUN) 05/13/2018 Arena Naucalpan [+LuchaTV, The Gladiatores]
1) Power Bull b Arquero
2) Atomic Star & Leroy b Shadow Boy & Toto
Shadow Boy betrayed Toto. Atomic Boy invited Shadow Boy to join the rudos.
3) Black Dragón, Dinamic Black, Dragón Fly b Dragón Bane, Gallo Frances, Lunatic Xtreme
Gallo Frances betrayed Lunatic Xtreme (so the sons of Ovett had partners attack them in two straight matches)
4) Aramis, Hijo de Canis Lupus, Hijo de Sangre Chicana b Apolo Estrada Jr., Eterno, Ovett
Hijo de Sangre Chicana made his debut, replacing The Tiger.
5) Freelance, Ricky Marvin, Súper Mega b Oficial 911, Oficial AK47, Oficial Fierro
many fouls leading to the finish.
6) Emperador Azteca & Imposible b Trauma I & Trauma II
straight falls in a “polemica” result – excessive violence or a countout depending on the recap.

Main event might be setting up the return of Negro Navarro for a trios title match.

Today’s Puebla show seems not so great. Maybe the main event will be good, but it’s not a promising lineup otherwise. The semimain, a rematch of a not good match last week, looks particularly not good. The end product will probably be a Rush/Kraneo match on 05/21, but today’s match is a waste of time.

This is about the time of year where this building starts building a local feud for a July apuesta match. They’ve been lately doled out as a reward for long service, not as something that might be an interesting match. 2015 had Lestat/King Jaguar, 2016 had Black Tiger/King Jaguar, 2017 was Espiritu Maligno/Ares. Espiritu was flipped over to the tecnico side to make that feud worked (and flipped back to the rudo side when it was done), which makes it especially noteworthy that Sauron is suddenly listed as a tecnico in the second match. He’s been a rudo in this building for a decade, so either the likes of Lestat & Tigre Rojo Jr. were surprisingly unavailable tonight, or something is up.

Angel de Oro, Niebla Roja & Mistico versus Cuatrero, Sanson and Mephisto has the best chance of being good, though random trios main events don’t have a great track record in Puebla. Amapola, La Comandante and La Seductora take on Marcela, Princesa Sugehit, and Lady Maravilla in a women’s match. Maravilla is scheduled to appear, and the indications are she’s staying in CMLL at the moment. The show opens with Astro, Black Tiger & Meyer taking on Ares, Perverso and Rey Apocalipsis.

Lucha Central has a preview of this show. It’ll air at 9pm, but you may want to watch it later on YouTube.

+Lucha has a sit down interview with Imposible.

4) Audaz, Blue Panther, Flyer vs Felino, Luciferno, Rey Bucanero
5) Euforia, Gran Guerrero, Mr. Niebla vs Titán, Valiente, Volador Jr.

One day after the Gran Alternativa final, Flyer is in a semimian. It may be just that the tecnico side is a little soft on this show; Robin working a tercera is odd too.

1998 Coahuila/Durango lineups added to the luchadb

I added 1998 lucha libre lineups, mostly from the cities Torreon and Gomez Palacio to the luchadb database a few weeks ago. They’re integrated the different pages of this site, and they’re also just available here. This is a slow continuing project to mine the El Siglo de Torreon archive for lucha lineups and results. This time, I wrote this post before diving into the next year. It looks like I went fast, but it was actually a lot slower.

Events per year:

year events
1990 169
1991 175
1992 181
1993 151
1994 113
1995 144
1996 114
1997 199
1998 243
1999 235

(I did 1999 three years ago, because I originally thought I was going to do this backwards and then I just didn’t.)

That’s the most events in a single year. Again, it’s probably not that there were more events, but that the paper was listing lineups for more shows – maybe because of space, maybe one person was just motivated to include them. That’s the highest count to this point, though even more lineups would start turn up later in the decade.

The results for big matches are slightly up too. There’s a lot of previews that mention [X] got his head shaved last week or such the following week. It may just be that the word count on lucha libre stayed about the same overall though, because the news articles have virtually disappeared at this point. The national column is gone, the local column is long gone, and there’s only a handful of other articles. The positive news is the ones that were posted are interesting.

On March 18th, Brillante retires. It’s explained as his son asked him to retire weeks ago and he decided to do it, complete with Brillante writing a touching letter to his son. His son Christian, not Manuel (Sombra) – I didn’t remember he had a brother. It’s lucha libre, so Brillante is back in early 1999, asked to defend a title he never actually gave up and then picking up a second one. He disappears for a few more months, then wrestles under a new mask as Black Ninja for a little while before losing it and continuing back onto this day. I hope Christian got over it.

The end of the year has a big profile of one Ultimo Guerrero. He was not around home much this year, busy elsewhere: this is the year where he took Mr. Aguila’s mask, after jumping from Promo Azteca in 1997 when he was slated to lose his mask. That turned out to be a great call. Guerrero credits Blue Panther for helping him jump to CMLL. Panther previously got him, Pantera del Ring/Ephesto and Ultimo Rebelde/Lucifierno into Promo Azteca and didn’t seem to leave Promo Azteca on the best terms, so he had some stakes in making sure a protege of his made the jump.  Ultimo Guerrero had gone to Japan for the first time this year, as part of a CMLL Japan tour, and talks of possibly signing a two year deal with NJPW in 1999. Guerrero says that if that doesn’t work out, he might instead go to the WWF. This interview took place early on in the of the WWF Super Astros run, which included future partners Tarzan Boy & Rey Bucanero among others. It’s possible Ultimo Guerrero really did have a chance to go to WWF at one point, though I wonder if they would’ve asked him to unmasked like they did with Bucanero & Aguila.

Other articles include Mascarita Sagrada being upset with other people wrestling as Mascarita Sagrada, and hype for El Dorado, who comes home to Torreon this year. There’s some of the standbys:  Gomez Palacio gets a new lucha commissioner, which is the only time we hear about a commissioner. 70s? luchador Hielero Aguilar passes away. The seemingly annual history of lucha libre piece includes pre-EMLL shows this year. Mini Frankestein and El Felon make for a great picture; most of the pictures didn’t scan well.

This may be the last one of these for a while. I have some 2006 clean up to do, but probably not going to do a post about it. I was able to do half the work for the 1979 one, but the pre-1985 ones don’t have much to them and I might do something like post the 70s in two stacks. I should get back to the magazines I was looking thru for a while, but moving over the luchadb is the next free time priority.

3) Diva Salvaje & Rossy Moreno b Cinthia Moreno & Yoruba
4) Maravilla Strong & Maremoto b Ciclón Infernal & Dragosth
5) Demasiado & Demonio Infernal b Hijo De Dr. Pólux Jr. & Murciélago Plateado
6) Ludark Shaitan & Muñeca De Plata b Baronessa & Quetzal
7) Kawato & Súper Astro Jr. b Imposible & Ricky Marvin

If I’m using the picture I probably should post the results on the main page, but it doesn’t seem like a lot interesting happen. These outdoor shows are well attended, especially by people who film matches for YouTube.

CMLL (SAT) 05/12/2018 Arena Coliseo [CMLL]
1) Magnus & Sangre Imperial b Grako & Yago
tecnicos took 2/3.
2) Pequeño Nitro, Pequeño Olímpico, Pierrothito b Fantasy, Shockercito, Stukita
rudos took 1/3.
3) Dalys, La Comandante, Zeuxis b La Vaquerita, Lady Maravilla, Marcela
Rudas took 2/3. Maravilla did appear despite being listed on an upcoming AAA show.
4) Blue Panther Jr., Guerrero Maya Jr., The Panther DQ Felino, Olímpico, Rey Bucanero
Tecnicos toko 1/3. Guerrero Maya replaced Stuka. Rey Bucanero pulled Maya’s mask for the DQ. Olimpico’s first match here in two months.
5) Diamante Azul, Kraneo Stuka Jr., Valiente DQ La Bestia Del Ring, Rush, Terrible
Stuka Jr. replaced Valiente, but Valiente ended up working anyway and replacing Kraneo. Ingobernabels fouled Azul for the DQ.

Promos: Magnus & Tony Salazar (who will be on Facebook Live on Thursday), Olimpico, Guerrero Maya (who’s says he’ll take care of Rey Bucanero after he goes to ROH, but he’s not going for a month), and Stuka Jr.

CMLL (SUN) 05/13/2018 Arena México [CMLL]
1) Camorra & Hijo del Signo b Retro & Robin
Rudos took 1/3.
2) Metálico, Nitro, Sangre Azteca b Astral, Eléctrico, Oro Jr.

Rudos took 1/3.
5) Ángel de Oro, Diamante Azul, Kráneo b Cavernario, Rey Bucanero, Terrible
Tecnicos took 2/3.

Promos: Hijo del Signo, Sangre Azteca, and Pegasso, which seems like it wasn’t a much happening for a show.

CMLL (SUN) 05/13/2018 Arena Coliseo Guadalajara [CMLL]
1) Destello & Destructor b Amperaje & Avispón Negro Jr.
2) Demonio Maya & Puma Negro b Capitán Cobra & Tigre Blanco
3) Mr. Apolo, Mr. Trueno, Rey Trueno b Black Sugar, El Divino, Mágico
4) Explosivo, Joker, Magnum DQ Difunto, Maléfico, Sádico
Sadico fouled new tecnico Joker.
5) Esfinge, Titán, Tritón b Dragón Rojo Jr., Hechicero, Pólvora
Esfinge beat Hechicero before their title match.

Hechicero beat Esfinge at the sponsored show on the previous night in Guadalajara. CMLL sent the Mexico City edecanes all the way to Jalisco for a dance number; the Cementos Fortaleza people are clearly important.

House Hunters visited Arena Coliseo Guadalajara for some reason.

AAA put up the second week of the San Luis Potosi taping. They tease an OGT split in vignettes, which is something not at all seen on the taping itself and doesn’t seem to reflect the team versus team Verano de Escandalo match. I have a lot of questions about AAA right now. Maybe Friday’s taping will answer some of them.

Hollywood Reporter has a favorable review of “Cassandro the Exotico“.

AIW has Gringo Loko versus Laredo Kid in the first round of their 05/25 JLIT tournament in Cleveland.

Martinez Promotions has Lacey Lane vs Faby Apache on 06/15 in Fort Worth, which is currently the The Crash Women’s champion against the AAA Women’s Champion.

Rey Mysterio as announced as appearing on 09/01 All In card. Tickets for the show have sold out.

Reviews seem to be all over the places on this show, ranging from average to one of the best of the year. Everyone seems to agree Casas/Soberano was really good.

CMLL has post match intreviews with Dragon Rojo & Polvora, Esfinge, Triton & Titan (officially as Guanatos Style), Negro Casas, and Ultimo Guerrero & Templario. Negro Casas also crashed Soberano’s interview with the press to remember to ask for a title match. Titan talked there about going back to Ring of Honor.

CMLL looks back at Euforia winning the 2012 Gran Alternativa.

Dragon Lee posted a photo from training, so he’s still getting ready for the Best of Super Juniors even if he’s not wrestling on shows. Skadi is also in the phot, so mus be close to returning.

AAA released an updated card for Verano de Escandalo, filling in almost all of the surprise spots.

AAA TV (SUN) 06/03/2018 Plaza de Toros La Monumental, Monterrey, Nuevo León
1) Arkángel Divino, Dinastía, Hijo Del Vikingo, Star Fire vs Arez, Belial, Lady Maravilla, Último Maldito
2) Lady Shani, Mamba, Pimpinela Escarlata vs ?, Black Danger (Baja California), La Hiedra
3) Drago vs Sammy GuevaraAerostarAustralian SuicideDarby Allin
4) La Máscara, Máximo, Pagano vs Juventud Guerrera, Killer Kross, Texano Jr.
4) Hijo del Fantasma & Psycho Clown vs Brian Cage & Rey Escorpión
6) Averno, Chessman, Súper Fly vs Carta Brava Jr., Mocho Cota Jr., Tito Santana [hair]
7) Dr. Wagner Jr. © vs Rey Mysterio Jr. [AAA HEAVY]

There’s one they notably did not fill in: the main event had been listed as a three way match, and now is a straight Wagner/Mysterio match. Notably, no sign of Blue Demon, Hernandez or Hijo del Dr. Wagner, who had been the focus of the promotion the first half of the year. No La Mascara or Maximo La Parka & Dave the Clown either.

Cage & Escorpion were the mystery opponents for Fantasma & Psycho. Kross & Juvy are Texano’s surprise teammates, the same as in Tehuacan next Friday. That show still is a lot of mystery people, though it’ll probably be some of the mystery people we see here. Darby Allin had be the guess as the mystery guy in the five way and will be one, but now the match is no longer for a heavyweight title match. The one mystery spot still left is the rudo side in the second match. It probably should be Faby Apache, so she and Shani can actually interact. Their “feud” is reaching the same levels of the Ivelisse/Catrina one from Lucha Underground season 3.

The opener has the most ‘new’ names, though may show up before this show. Star Fire is a long ago CMLL fringe roster member who’s been mostly been wrestling on the indies (and has missed the last couple of shows she’s been advertised.) Arez & Belial had AAA tryouts matches in 2015 but didn’t stick around when they were told they’d have to work AAA small shows around the country and decided to work their own schedule instead. That seems to have worked out for them, so I would suspect they’re also going to keep working some indie schedule if they’re being brought in at the opener level.

Lady Maravilla also was in AAA in 2015 and 2016 before jumping over to ELITE. After she left, Konnan said one reason was because referee Copetes was sexually harassing her, and an AAA/Marisela Pena investigation into it cleared Copetes. Maravilla did not make the same claim – she didn’t dismiss them either, but kind of sidestepped the topic. Copetes is listed as a referee for this show. Lady Maravilla is listed as working tonight’s Arena Coliseo show and Monday’s Arena Puebla show. Her Facebook fanclub posted a message that they say proves she’s staying with CMLL and the AAA news is false. Obviously, if she was going to AAA and had not yet informed CMLL of her decision, then that’s the story she should would have to say. Like Arez & Belial, I suspect Maravilla appearing on this card would means she would be actually returning to the indies with some AAA dates, rather than going full time with AAA. CMLL seems to view Maravilla as just one of a bunch of young women they have no plans to push this decade in a division going nowhere, so her leaving would be no big surprise.

AAA’s also quietly fixed the 05/31 Arena Aficion lineup: Big Mami & Nino Hamburugesa are now facing La Hiedra & Villano III Jr., instead of the mixed up teams they had before. Not that they know exactly what’s going on; the “La Parka” written column in Record believes Hiedra & Villano III Jr. are the champions. They are not, though they did steal the belts in an angle last year that was dropped. It’s odd to preview that lineup and not the Tehuacan show that’s actually happenign this week. Everything with AAA is a bit odd now.

RIOT has Riotmania on 05/26 in Arena LLF

The new match has a story, though not exactly related to the match. RIOT references in a hashtag, “#BloqueameEsta“, an issue that only seems to be talked about on Facebook. People in Monterrey are saying Iguana was told by Lucha Memes to no longer work for RIOT if he wanted to work for Lucha Memes. Memes hasn’t directly responded, though they have posed memes. I guess that makes sense.

Casandro spoke to the press at the premiere of a documentary on his life, saying a fictional film about his life is also being prepared. Casandro said the director is looking to get Gael Garcia Bernal to playing him. The headline makes it sound like it’s happening, the body of the article says it hasn’t been confirmed. There’s also a book coming.

LuchaWorld has their latest news update.

Lucha Central posted a Flamita, Torito, Laredo Kid, Willie Mack, Fly Warrior, Lince Dorado, Septimo Dragon match from 2016.
