Team Caristico & UG took falls 2/3. Set up a Valiente/Volador vs UG/Caristico card

Crowd was packed, which I think was more due to it being Kid’s Day and the day before a holiday more than anything they did on the card. They were way into to cheering for Gallito in the micros match. Haven’t seen most of the rest of the card but it doesn’t sound like it went well.

Universo 2000, Andrés Reyes González, passed away today. He turned 55 last month. The cause of death has not been mentioned. Universo had been battling health issues, primarily with his heart, over the last two years. Universo was the third brother at that time, but later came into his own as a the focus of the group when Caras cut back his wrestling. Universo 2000 was a three time CMLL World Heavyweight Champion, holding the belt for close to seven years combined during those reigns. The heavyweight title was never a central part of CMLL during that point, but Universo was considered a reliable guy to have champion, and a luchador they could then put into big apuesta matches because of the credibility of being a long running champion.

Universo 2000’s most famous match was the 2004 CMLL Anniversario main event, a four way match with Canek, Dr. Wagner Jr. and Rayo de Jalisco Jr. Looking back now, it seems certain Universo would’ve been the loser as the least of the four stars, but it was not certain he would lose at the time. Universo was a late addition to the match as well; at one point, it seemed Dr. Wagner Jr. was going to be the loser, and Universo was added when those plans changed. CMLL thought highly enough of Universo that they did a finish that completely protected him: Universo 2000 gave Canek his Martillo Negro, a sit down piledriver, and a referee cost him his mask by a controversal disqualification. The following week, Universo 2000 did the move again with his brothers forcing both of the referees to watch it, and those referees said it shouldn’t have been a DQ.

Universo got a win back the following year, taking Hector Garza’s hair in the 2005 Anniversario, a match also including Perro Aguayo Jr. None of the three are alive today. Universo lost his hair to Aguayo Jr. the following spring, and later to Marco Corleone as one of his first big wins and Universo’s last big match.  Universo was done full time in CMLL in 2008, though he’d still work a lot of indies and make occasional appearances in Arena Mexico for years. His last match there was this 2016 one. Some of more recently announced appearances were probably his son Universo 2000 Jr. and creative wording on posters.

Universo 2000 Jr. is currently scheduled to work today’s holiday Arena Mexico show. (So is his mini, Pequeno Universo 2000.) I would expect that will change. The Nueva Generacion Dinamtias are listed as main eventing Arena Coliseo Guadalajara tonight, the arena the whole family started in. Sanson, Cuatrero and Forastero freely credit Universo 2000 for starting them out as a trainer. The kids wrestle a different style than their uncle, but you can see the similarities in moments. Before his illness, Universo 2000 had been training wrestlers and seemingly running a small promotion near Lagos del Moreno; I think the Promociones Dinamita shows were his.

SuperLucha has an obituary. AAA posted a remembrance of Universo, noting he was part of the main event on their first ever show.

CMLL has a show at the holiday start time of 5pm today in Arena Mexico. The big match on the show is Magia Blanca getting his prize for winning the Torneo Nuevo Valores, a national welterweight title match against Soberano. A title change doesn’t seem likely. The thing to watch here is how two guys who normally wrestle as high flying tecnicos work when there’s no natural rudo involved. It’s going to be a challenge, but one they need to master to improve as wrestlers.

The rest of the card is usual Tuesday matches. Caristico, Diamante Azul and Niebla Roja take on Mr. Niebla, Rey Bucanero and Ultimo Guerrero in the main event. Rey COmeta, Stuka and Titan face Dragon Rojo, Okumura and Polvora in the fourth. The Panthers team with Drone against Puma, Tiger and Universo 2000 Jr., though that might change now. Angelito, Shockercito and Stukita take on Pequeno Nitro, Pequeno Olimpico and Pequeno Universo 2000, which also might change. Leono makes his first streaming appearance in 11 months (knee injury), teaming with Bengala against Grako and Principe Odin.

CultIcon also previews the show, which will air on YouTube. The title match is worth watching and maybe the two matches prior to it. Still, if you forget about it because the early start time, you’ll probably survive fine.

Kaho Kobayashi has returned to Japan. She left us with another look at Kawato’s new hair.

After Friday’s show, Atlantis mentioned in interviews that his son Atlantis Jr. may debut late this year or next year. This has been the pattern for a while – Atlantis Jr.’s debut is being kept some safe distance in the future not close to happening. It’s a lot like Santo Jr. and Mexico City.

Last night, the AAA Twitter account was “hacked” by MAD, who posted a video taking credit for the attacks in Tijuana. The shirts and the banners were my first clue they had got involved. AAA’s regained control of the account today. They’re still somehow left the unable to delete the hacked tweets, what a mystery.

In reality, AAA needs a way to keep the MAD storyline going and explain what they’re doing. AAA doesn’t really have any TV taping for it to play it out for a while. This bit seemed to get the desired reaction; social media angles are definitely not everyone’s favorite, but this worked well enough that I’d expect them to do it again. MAD probably needs it’s own social media presence at some point, but a new account isn’t going to get as much attention as AAA’s well established accounts to get the idea out.

Arolucha announced their next show will be on June 17th. Rey Mysterio (and only Rey Mysterio) have been announced so far. Arolucha’s WeFunder page indicated they planned to be taping season 1 TV in June, but nothing is mentioned about television in the announcement. MultiMediaMouth says they talked to AroLucha and it’s not a TV taping. It’s strange they would run a show in their TV home base without making it TV; I’m guessing they had Mysterio locked in for the date but the TV side isn’t ready yet. Tickets will run from $25-$89 for VIP tickets with meet and greet. They sold out and had a big turn away crowd for straight $20 tickets in their previous show in the area.

Garza Jr. left the variety show he’d been appearing on for the last few years. That seems like something a person would do if they were heading to WWE.

Hechicero helped open a toy library in Mexico City.

The Cobra Kid who lost his mask in Juarez turns out to be Torreon’s Arabe Jr., wrestling as Cobra Kid for one night only. That should’ve been obvious when an unfamiliar name was listed in a cage match, but people are still understandably upset about it.

Hades, the Chetumal luchador who recently got a title match with Mephisto, says he’s been told there’s a possibility he’ll be invited to CMLL for a tryout. He hasn’t been given a date.

Angelus Fly lost his mask on Generacion 21’s show last night in Irapuato. He’s Jorge Hernandez, 32. LA Park beat Dr. Wagner in the main event.

The Gladiatores has an interview with Olimpico’s son, who says he’s returning to wrestling. Back in January 2010, the then “Exodia” was wrestling in IWRG when he suffered a severe leg injury on a fall outside the ring. It was bad enough that people quickly knew his career was over. I think the only other time we saw him was when Olimpico lost his mask that summer, when he was using a cane to get around. He’s been gone from wrestling since, but is now planning on returning to wrestling as Hijo del Olimpico.

Dragon Infernal took Ultrasonic’s hair in Xalapa’s Club Apolo.

SuperLuchas has brief obituaries for As Charro, Falcon de Oro and Sombra Vengador Jr.

LuchaWorld has this week’s Poster-Mania and the latest news report.

+LuchaTV has a new edition podcast.

Puma King & Barby have a new video.

2 thoughts to “Universo 2000 passes away, Blanca/Soberano, AAA hack”

  1. I disagree with Universo 2000’s most famous match being that four-way match where he lost his mask, I think his most famous and most important match of his entire career was his mask vs hair match against Perro Aguayo.
That match was a real deal. It was the first ever PPV for CMLL (“El Juicio Final”), Perro Aguayo was almost killed (radio and tv shows, as well as papers and magazines talked about it for days) and he never got to wrestle ever again, Universo’s piledriver got the name of “el martillo negro” and he got his nickname of “El asesino del ring”.

That was the match that skyrocketed Universo to the top, the match that proved he didn’t need any of his brothers to shine.

  2. I agree that match was bigger but just for the record Perro Aguayo did wrestle afterwards even though the fantasy story people tell is he was retired after that move. He headlined Homenaje Dos Leyendas 2005 at Arena Mexico.
