Show was alright. There were good matches without really a lot advancing. Solar/Virus was exactly what you’d expect it to be, and the rudo Mistico and rudo Dragon Lee was weird. The tercera was the best of the night. The Copa Dinastia had a poitnless feeling by ending on DQ, and there’s no real follow up to it apparent in next week’s lineup. Attendance was definitely down from the legends show.

Motorcyclists shot at a car leaving Arena Mexico after the show last night. Two Three men were in the car, and one man is reported dead. The initial police belief is this was not a random shooting but instead some grudge. This is the second time in recent memory there’s been a shooting in the neighborhood, which generally seems safe. There was a shooting in the bar across the street from the arena

It’s not the only story of this type today. Guatemalan luchador Principe Yoga Jr. was killed in a drive by shooting by a man on motorcycle while working his normal job. No one knows why that one happened.

Angelico announced yesterday he is leaving AAA and moving to Barcelona as of January 1st. He was complimentary to AAA and his mentors (Ultimo Dragon, Negro Navarro and Konnan).

Angelico came to Mexico to be part of Ultimo Dragon’s Toryumon Gym in 2008, showed up in IWRG and other Mexico city area small groups (before the big match indies really got rolling), but didn’t seem to find a good spot. The way I’ve heard the story, he was kind of out of lucha libre in late 12/early 13 until Konnan convinced him to come to AAA, and that’s turned out to be best run of his career so far. He and Jack Evans, who weren’t close before they got put together, became a great tag team during a moment where AAA actually got known for having great matches. Angelico got brought to Lucha Underground, where his dives off Dario’s office became some of the most iconic moments of the series, but where bad luck injuries prevented him from having the bigger singles run that seemed to be coming.

Angelico’s taken time off from AAA to wrestle around Europe on his own a couple times in the last eighteen months, and even specifically stated he was thinking of making a long term move, so this isn’t a surprise. It’s also not a surprise considering AAA: they’ve got a nasty habit of freezing out people they’re afraid of leaving, pushing them out the door in the process. We’ve seen it with Penta and Fenix. AAA’s gone cold on Angelico since they fired Jack Evans. There’s plenty you can do with Angelico as a single, especially in a promotion desperately searching for new upper level guys, but Angelico was just left to drift. It’s admittedly tough to do something with a guy who isn’t around for a long period, but an effort still could be made. AAA put around 70 people on this year’s TripleMania show, but somehow couldn’t find a spot for Angelico. AAA’s decision on Angelico was made then. Angelico’s decision was probably made a while back too – he’s been advertised for TV tapings he hasn’t appeared on, and I don’t know for a fact that he’s appeared on any show lately outside the trip to Japan – and it’s just coming out now. The surprise here is Angelico not walking over to The Crash and working a couple farewell matches with that crew.

I don’t know what this means for Angelico on Lucha Underground. They’ve been reluctant to fly people in from across an ocean even when times were good, and times do not appear to be good right now. A compressed taping schedule might make it easier to just having him fly over once and hang out for a month or so, rather than flying him back and forth every two weeks. Still, it doesn’t come up in that statement, and there’s been rumors in the past that Angelico might have been one of those people on “three seasons” contracts. I still feel like we’re a couple months away from figuring out who’s actually on LU S4.

Shows coming up this weekend which you might be able to see in some handheld fashion

Saturday

Sunday

The AAA 12/09 earthquake benefit show means Psycho Clown & La Parka are no longer working in New York on that same day. The decision must’ve been made a while back, because it looks like WUW has been advertising LA Park & Hijo de LA Park in their space for at least two weeks.

Plaza de Toros Valente Arellano in Torreon turns 83 years old today, and has hosted lucha libre events for most of those years. It’s one of the only things it can still host: bullfighting is now outlawed there.

Loading up to go against Elite! Or not.

Copa Junior VIP is the same juniors-only tournament they ran earlier in the year (won by Soberano), but with guys higher up on the card. Maximo won the only previous version in 2014. It was held as a single elimination tournament that time; this time looks to be a cibernetico because there’s 12 people involved. Dragon Rojo is questionable for the match with his injury, and questionable for being in the match because he’s a self admitted fake junior.

Nothing much else going on here. Adonis is on the card, not in the same match as Casas, but probably will get involved somehow. Did You Know: Zeuxis had only one CMLL match in November, and only three in October. I don’t know if there’s an injury or time off happening, but she’s not been around much since the mask match.

What happened:

quite random

Negro Casas challenged Sam Adonis to a hair vs hair match. Sam didn’t agree quite yet. Volador & Rush got along perfectly for the whole match, as if they had already agreed to be a tag team (but that doesn’t appear to have been the case.)

In the final of the Copa Dinastia, Sansón had Pierroth up in his finish when Rush came to the ring. Pierroth escaped via distracted and stole Sanson’s mask, but Rush came in join his family in stomping down the Dinamitas before Pierroth could even consider going for a cradle. The Munoz family had attacked NGD early and generally behaved like rudos. The Dinamitas eventually got their trophy despite the Munoz preventing it for a moment.

one of the hundred people who’d be better in a feud than Signo

The second match appeared to be cut short when Dragon Rojo suffered an (groin?) injury in the third fall. They finished it less than a minute later.

Signo & Starman have randomly decided to feud. There’s usual an undercard mask match on the New Year’s Day show, and they’re the obvious favorite. Starman is disqualified after ripping up Signo’s mask. It came off as if it was accidental to rip it up that much, but probably wasn’t given the length of the rest of the show.

Thoughts:

he had no runway here and still pulled it off

The main event existed to continue to push towards the Adonis/Casas and to have Volador/Rush acting like new allies without confirming anything in either. It did a good job of acting like something was about to happen without actually happening. It was not particularly great at anything else. Mephisto was quiet out of place – Volador & Rush spent the match going after UG and could not have less time for him. The finish seemed like someone wasn’t in the right place at the right time, and only highlighted by Tirantes wanting to get the pop for shoving Sam down but Sam not going.

The tournament final had a really odd dynamic of the Munoz family working as rudos against guys who are already rudos. This match also kept Pierroth involved in the action a lot more, and so the action was a lot less, and dragged during large parts of the first two thirds. It got better near the end, though the match was best symbolized by the excitement of Dragon Lee and Mistico doing big moves followed by the realization that it would mean more Pierroth.

clever cat

The NGD/Panther match got a lot of time, as far as these tournament matches go, and they really got to develop the comeback. I don’t think the NGD were as sharp as they can be, but were plenty solid enough to make this work. Blue Sr. knows how to bait the crowd into caring. Panther Jr. is strong, but not at all graceful about it. His struggling to finish moves really made it more dramatic at times.

The Munoz/Casas trios match worked as long as the four young guys were in the ring. Puma fit better with Dragon Lee than Tiger and Mistico (though there was a bad Mistico/Puma headscissors late.) There’s little chance we’re seeing that tag match any time soon, but the tease of it here was good. Pierroth was in for about 20 seconds of this match.

all you need to know about Terrible in one GIF

The Solar/Virus match was everything you’d expect it to be: a heavy technical match where they didn’t hit the ropes until late in the match, and one that part of the crowd was not into at all. I think the whistling lasted half as long as the match. This felt short of great for me: Solar is slow now, and getting into holds and maintaining them is very for him to do. Virus got dropped on his head on one escape, and this was the slowest match he’s worked of this style. If nothing else, it was good to see this match because there’s no telling how much longer we’ll get to see it.

The tercera had a bit of the excitement you’d expect from these técnicos, though it fell short of the all out matches you’d hope for. The crowd didn’t seem greatly into it until the super triple dive spot in the third fall. They exploded on that one. Okumura is rusty from his long break, with the neat DDT spot at the end not looking neat As always, Terrible does well in the anti-flyer matches and should be used in more of them. Soberano looked great but Cometa & Titan weren’t far behind; Cometa kicks were well timed.

well sure

The second match might have been a better match on another day, but it was going short and then just ended quick after Dragon Rojo went down. Hope he’s fine, because most of this will be forgotten anyway. Stigma’s thru the ropes tope armdrag was nice.

The opener just existed to get the Signo/Starman feud over. That makes sense on it’s own, but it probably didn’t stick in most fan’s minds by being the first match of a long night. Signo is showing nothing in the ring and this is simply CMLL paying tribute to a legacy instead of trying to give a feud to someone who might make something out of it. Star Jr. got to do a cool dive.
